The animal grading system is so esoteric. My brain is very literal; I just can't wrap my head around animal faces for grades. After 3 hours, I still had to consult the legend for every single climb because the faces all look the same to me. What's wrong with just using the V grading system??

Visiting from out of town, I decided to check this place out because of the boulder focus. It’s clear when you walk in that they want to make sure climbers feel comfortable in their own skin. It’s cozy, despite its large size, and there’s a good amount of climbing.

The majority of the climbs are in the V3-V6 range and the difficulty was pretty consistent across grade bands. They use circuit grading, and they put the grade band on every start tag, which is great. I spoke with lots of staff while I was there and everyone was very friendly.

I don’t know how stiff your gym grades, and I don’t care how soft or sandbagged this gym is compared to yours, because the bottom line is that climbing here was a lot of fun.

The main issue with this gym is the route setters don't seem to know how to make routes for lower-intermediate climbers. The black (5.10) routes are always quite easy, but then the next level, blue (5.11) is a large jump in difficulty, and there are zero routes in the gym for intermediate climbers in between. I've only ever seen this issue at this one gym, other gyms usually have a strong focus on that middle difficulty level, but not Crux. It briefly improved for a couple months, but now it's an issue again and it's pretty much been an issue since they opened.

Very nice bouldering gym.

Spacious gym with a ton of different routes at all levels. Creative problems set by some great setters.
Clean gym, friendly staff, and a decent setup for some freeweight exercising.

Among good climbers, Crux has a terrible reputation. I once accidentally bumped into a sassy employee on a very crowded day, and 10 min later the manager came at me, practically yelling that I “shoulder checked his employee” and asked for my badge 5x as I tried to explain that the situation was a hugely assumptive and I’d never do that. So aggressive. Not the first time an employee has rudely yelled at me that I was climbing a wrong route. Preserve your peace of mind and drive a little farther to Mesa Rim. Crux also lost their lease at South, didn’t notify me via any communication method, and now won’t fulfill my reimbursement request because I am 10 days past their deadline. Truly terrible customer service and professionalism.

I’ve been a member of this climbing gym for a few years, and I can’t recommend it enough! They have multiple locations, which makes it easy to find one that fits my schedule. They have excellent bouldering walls, and the routes are updated frequently, keeping things fresh and exciting. The gym is well-equipped with everything I need for a regular workout—whether it’s climbing, strength training, or cardio.

Their fitness and yoga programs are top-notch, with skilled instructors and plenty of time slots to choose from. I also love that they offer a sauna and showers in the bathrooms—it’s the perfect way to unwind after a tough session.

One of the best features of the Pflugerville location is the remote workspaces, including isolated rooms where I can focus and be productive. Plus, the staff here is always friendly and welcoming, which makes the whole experience even better. And if you need to stay connected, there’s reliable Wi-Fi throughout.

Overall, it's an amazing spot for climbing enthusiasts, fitness fans, and anyone looking for a great place to work out or even get some work done. Highly recommend!

YEAR UPDATE//
Crux climbing is my favorite gym, and getting a membership has been great for me! I share a “crew membership” with friends that gives us guest passes to use to bring other friends, and reduces the price since we all signed up.
The walls change often enough to not get bored and stay up long enough to figure out the more challenging climbs.
I’ve used the yoga and fitness classes and really enjoy the variety in energy from the instructors and the different types of classes.
The workers are knowledgeable about both how to climb and how to be cool folks. I see young children walk in and the front desk is immediately helpful getting them to their club, I see folks teleworking from the gym, families, clubs, and I know it’s a good third place.
I’m so happy this is my third place!

Old review:
I’ve been going here for a couple months, and it’s always been a great atmosphere. It’s connected to coffee shop if you get hungry, the staff is great, there’s 2 gyms and a lot of walls that reset with a schedule posted at the gym. I like to spend a whole day here working for 20 minutes and climbing for 10 and just switching. Dog friendly, there’s a ping pong table, lots of storage for items in benches and cubbies!

Update 10/17/24:

I wrote my first review of Crux Central over a year and a half ago, and the sentiments still stand, but now I feel even more strongly about this little home away from home. If you're looking for a place to climb, take fitness classes, practice yoga, or just meet some of the best people ever, look no further than this local haven of a gym. The owners, instructors, and staff really put their hearts and souls into this place, and it shows. Go take a class with Audrey, Ashtyn, Gabi, Jennifer, Rachel, Sam, Tatiana, or Will and see what I mean (and I can only assume the instructors I haven't taken classes from are amazing at what they do too)! Yeah, there are other climbing gyms in Austin, but none of them even touch the goodness that is Crux.

Original Review:

Crux is a fantastic climbing gym, but it's also so much more. The value for the price of a membership is well worth it - the yoga and fitness classes Crux offers are better than many I've been to at your regular 'generic' gym, and the instructors really know their stuff. C-Yoga & Handstand classes are ESPECIALLY fun and challenging!

For me, the thing that makes Crux super special is the community. From the staff to the fellow climbers, it's a really welcoming place to make your home gym. Yeah, the routes are set a little harder than those at some other local gyms, but don't let that deter you. I just started 9 months ago and I've seen a lot of growth. Even first-time climbers will have routes that are accessible to them!

Check it out. You won't be disappointed!

Attempted to purchase the week pass advertised on the attached screenshot of crux central's Instagram. Was told said deal was only available for a week and not "for all of August" as advertised. Frustrated to pay $18 more (nearly double the price) for a weekly drafting membership and immediately cancel to avoid further charges. I like the gym but false advertising is never acceptable.

Update: Crux responded! Said we'd sort this out if I emailed them. Never got a response. False advertising, meaningless responses on here.

While not their typical clientele, Crux is a great venue for a child's birthday party. Our 4 year old chose Crux as her party location after a recent outing here with a few friends.

We chose to limit our party to the back kids room, adjacent to the workout space, and had a great time. The assigned staff was wonderful with the kids, helping them to learn climbing lanes, footholds, etc., and then chasing them around the room for a game of tag when things turned silly.

We chose to hang out with a few of the kids after our party time ended to let the birthday girl and a few friends practice climbing on some of the novice courses outside of the kids space and they had a blast.

We'll definitely return to Crux Central and would highly recommend it for a great kid's party site.

Crux Central has some of the best routesetting I've ever seen. They have really exotic holds, including some holds that the head setter designed. The setting is complex and fun to figure out - at all grades - the gym is really geared toward intermediate and beginner climbers. There are many easy boulders in the V1-3 range that use tons of volumes and macros, which is a testament to the gyms dedication to the beginner climber. They don't set anything that requires an unreasonable amount of strength, but rather focus on building technique and having fun. They have a low density, and high quality. The friendliness of the other climbers is what impressed me the most. Everyone said hello to me and I felt welcomed from the moment I entered. In a city with many world class gyms, this is truly a destination gym.

Great space, wonderful team, and a great spot for beginners. Crux has been my gym for over a year and I’ve tried a bit of everything. Strength and yoga classes are high quality. The gym is clean and the staff are friendly and helpful. We recently rented out the kids room for my daughter’s birthday party and it was a huge success! The kids loved climbing and the Crux team - shoutout to Sar! - helped with setup and supporting the kids. I would strongly recommend this gym to anyone looking for an inclusive, fun place to workout, climb, or bring your kids.

Love coming here but the air quality has been horrible in recent months. You can see so much chalk in the air. They have a big fan running facing a popular area and all that does is blow the chalk up. South and other gyms in the area don't have this issue. I notice that I sleep very poorly after coming on bad air days here... This stuff is going into your lungs. I hope you can find a way around this!

They will not let you cancel your membership without creating an account in their system. Even though they acknowledge I am the owner of the account, send the bills to the email I am responding to and noted my request to cancel.

Quote: "Without that termination request, your account will continue to accumulate unpaid charges". They are saying I have to create an account to cancel my account, which is pretty ridiculous in my opinion and not something I had to do before.

You must pay a fee to initiate membership and monthly fee to freeze your membership so you don't have to pay the initiation fee again - just general scummy gym practices brought to your local climbing gym.

Big headache. Many under informed employees that give you random answers instead of saying, 'I don't know, let me figure out'. Women's sauna is like 135F. I got the veteran discount and paid $700 for a year but was sold on false claims. They would not refund my money. I knew they were in the wrong, for so many reasons......., so I filed a charge back and used my bank to get my money back. I’ve been a member here for over a year and I love it. I go to a lot of the exercise classes. They are all about listening to your body and doing what feels good for you — NOT pushing yourself until you can’t move like all of the really intense exercise classes that are so popular right now.

The instructors are great and always helpful when correcting your form. I’ve learned so much since I started coming to these classes. I go to classes led by Ashtyn, Will, and Tatiana on a weekly basis. Andrea gets an honorable mention too because her class is what convinced me to get a membership!

I love the energy of this entire place, everyone is friendly and I never feel like I’m being judged.

I also climb and go to yoga classes on occasion and those are great too. Anyway, to wrap things up, whether you’re a serious climber, a yogi, or just looking to take better care of your body, this is a great place to come.

I've been consistently attending Crux's fitness and yoga classes for nearly 2 years. I sought the classes out specifically due to their focus on mobility and joint health, which I need due to some lower back and hip issues. Their instructors are excellent and offer very helpful adjustment suggestions. They also have a full gym, rowing machines, sauna, nice showers and lockers, and of course the climbing walls. When you come for bouldering the first time, they give you a pretty good intro to the gym including how to navigate their rating system. I purchase the annual membership which comes out to a great monthly rate, especially when considering unlimited yoga and high-quality fitness training.

Crux my go-to climbing spot in Austin, especially in the mornings. Their facility is clean. This is their smaller location, but it's still packed with things to do. Great rock climbing gym. This review is in the context of the kids classes. So far the kids classes have been pretty great. Kids seem to have a lot of fun, the facilities seem clean from what I saw, and they regularly sanitize borrowed shoes (yay hygiene!). The instructors are engaging with the youth, and you can see the kids are very active in participating. The instructors are also very communicative with parents, letting them know of issues that the children are experiencing, or even if the dedicated classes are something that might not be the best fit for the kids (as in the kid wants to climb and have fun, but not necessarily learn).

I have yet to see any instructors express frustration with a student who is failing to grasp concepts, and they adapt the exercise to the student's current abilities, and push them to grow a bit.

We aren't huge rock climbers, but we are going twice a week to try it out for a while. We're having fun, and this is affordable and accessible.

Crux central is alright. It's very popular because it's a pretty gym with problems that appeal to the masses. If you're going to the gym for fun with friends, you will love it. There is even a brewery and coffee shop next door. However, if you're going just to train at the gym you will likely relate to my gripes.

1. The parking is bad (though not as bad as crux south) and it's crazy crowded on weeknights. Also, the gym isn't set up well to handle the amount of people (low problem density, problems crisscross, ...).
2. The grading is really inconsistent.
3. They lack on the 45° wall angle (which is very useful for training).
4. The down climbing cube things on the top out boulder are so stupid.

The training boards and workout area make up a bit for it's shortcomings. I much preferred NARG and cannot wait for Mesa Rim to open (even if it isn't a local company).

Update Feb. 2022
The setters have started putting holds on the wall such that the backs and sharp edges of them stick out...

Update Dec. 2022
Switched to ABP in the interim before Mesa Rim opens. It's a bit ridiculous how much better the setting is...

Friendly, helpful, some good bouldering routes, spacious, and kid friendly, plus a regular gym area. But with so many positive things about it, it's also really busy. Not really too crowded, but it definitely had a lot of people.

Great climbing gym. Lots of walls and they switch up the routes pretty often. Seems like a lot of routes of each difficulty.

Clean restroom/locker rooms, got soaps and hair ties. Kids area is fun and lobby is cozy. Friendly staff and overall good vibes. Consistent update on the wall map by the water fountain near the kids area so you know what walls are being changed at what date, this is very handy especially if you're projecting a route. They have "get to know me" posters of the fitness and yoga instructors as well as descriptions of the classes on their website which I find helpful in knowing what the class may entail.

Very cool place, very cool staff, very cool community.

Crux is a lot more than a climbing gym! I go for the yoga and fitness classes, which are all really good (and for all levels!). The instructors are nice and very encouraging. They definitely work hard to build a community, as opposed to just a place where you work out and leave.

Great climbing gym for most climbers, especially beginner and intermediate skill levels.

The setters do a great job catering to their typical patrons. There are always a wide breadth of routes available for most skill levels. Admittedly, I am an intermediate climber (v6 is about my limits), so I won't speak too much in regard to routes high above my level.

The fitness facilities are also adequate for basic workouts, however I can think of a few small additions they could make to round out what they have.

The people who work there are kind and always seem happy to answer any questions or to simply talk. I enjoy seeming them each day I go in. I have to imagine they are as welcoming for new climbers.

The staff is always taking care of the facilities- it's easy to see them cleaning up frequently. The showers are nice and clean, and the sauna makes the membership worth it alone.

I've been going for months and I plan to continue.

Great place for indoor rock climbing and even has a nice area for kids too.
Over all a nice place. It also has different difficulties of climbing based on a series of badges. I find this really helpful, as it helps you start off with the easy ones.

Overall, I would recommend this place for others as it is an amazing place to visit.

2023 update: another fantastic year at Crux Central, still lovin' this place :)

Update... wish I could add more stars! Routes are constantly being updated, so there's always new climbs to try. Crux's member appreciation is terrific, and staff members are always helpful and friendly!

This place is awesome! Yoga and Fitness instructors are all knowledgeable, friendly, and motivating, making the classes a really enjoyable addition to the day. And the climbing is great too ;)

I go here when I'm visiting from Seattle which has amazing gyms. The walls aren't as tall as I'm used to but the quality route setting makes up for it; so does the super nice staff. I'm super stoked to see the North location when it opens with the taller walls.

If I'd have them change anything it would be to make the route placards bigger so my old eyes can read them and do the a,b,c,d rating or at least +/-.

I had a great time climbing here! I had never rock climbed before so I was very nervous. But the vibe was very laid back and not at all intimidating. There are many climbs at various difficulties. So even though I was at the lowest difficulty, it felt like I had a lot to try.

I primarily climb at the south gym, but I love how bright this one is and the less hectic parking area. It is a great gym to check out if you're looking for variety from the South or live in the neighborhood. Thank you Crux!

Nice facilities, great location for remote work with decent wifi and Spokesman Coffee next door. There can be a lot of high school & younger kids after school hours, but it's pretty calm if you go early in a weekday.

Great place and a great experience. This bouldering gym is barebones and to the point. The regular gym inside has equipment for basic workouts. The prices are pretty good, especially if you are associated with UT or ACC.
