For those who know me, you’re aware that I rarely complain—especially not publicly. However, a recent experience at the Gold’s Gym on FM 78 has compelled me to speak up.

I have been a member of this facility since 2010. I train there daily and, over the years, I’ve built genuine relationships with both fellow patrons and staff—individuals I’ve come to regard as my gym family.

On the morning of 19 November, I arrived for my usual early workout. After scanning in, I was called back to the front desk and informed that I “did not have a membership.” This was said by an employee I interact with almost every day. Puzzled, I explained that I am enrolled in the Active & Fit program and have maintained my membership for the past 15 years. The response was simply repeated, along with a suggestion that I contact my insurance provider. At that point, the interaction had already disrupted my workout, so I left and reached out to Active & Fit directly. They confirmed that my membership was active and contacted Gold’s Gym on my behalf.

My concern is not with the system error—issues happen. Rather, it is the dismissive attitude I encountered. After so many years of consistent membership, a more considerate approach—such as asking me to speak with a manager upon their arrival—would have been both reasonable and respectful.

Unfortunately, this experience has left a lasting impression. I will not be returning to the Gold’s Gym on FM 78. As the saying goes, “Go where you’re appreciated, not tolerated.” Peace!! #goldsgym #goldswalzem

I have been working out for many years. I decided to try this gym because is just a little bit close to my house than the one I go. Considering the high price of the membership, I had high expectations. To my surprise, I found dirty machines, poor air conditioning, low lights, no music at all and corrosion in some equipment. I understand the gym might be old, but people pay a higher membership that the other 2 gyms nearby and that should be enough for them to be better. It’s very deteriorated. Not coming back!

I have a crush on the front desk girl. Not sure her name but she has really long hair and is always smiling. Rest of staff is nice too. Gym is clean and not overly crowded. Sundays are best days to go if you want a chill environment to work out.

On top of rusted equipment the staff doesn’t seem to really see what goes on inside the gym itself. Almost everytime I workout people working out in sandals and even barefeet stinking up the area. I get it, sweat stinks but feet stink is a whole diff story. Also the sauna is what sold me on this location and doesn’t seem like there’s any intentions on getting that to work….

This gym is not worth $40 a month ! I went in and the facility looks very outdated the machines and weights are old and rusted, parts of the walls have plywood showing looks like the wall isn’t finished not sure how it even has almost 4 stars. $60 annual fee for what ? Nothing is new in this gym there’s other gyms that are better in the area. Also they don’t have a wide variety of machines and the first machine I used to lever was jammed so you couldn’t adjust it. Not worth it

This specific location failed to cancel my membership after needing to break the contract due to medical necessity. I have been harassed by collections to pay for the months AFTER I had already cancelled. I repeatedly told the staffing and showed proof of cancellation and even medical documentation, yet I am still being harassed 3 years later for a concern that should have been dealt with already. Anytime I have tried to get the amount disputed, they manipulate the narrative and try forcing you to pay anyways stating there is “no other option.” This is supposedly a very common thing with gyms and especially with Gold’s Gym, so please consider other options if you can!

Gold's gym has always been a solid place for a great workout because of the mix of various equipment to suit people's lift preferences. Free weights, machines, TRX, and treadmills all are kept in great order. The staff there are very friendly and professional. My two main beefs, though, are the lack of the sauna and swimming pool at many of the locations in San Antonio. It'd be nice if they would bring those back.

It's not as great as it's Glory days, sadly. Still pretty clean on the insides but the machines are just old there's too many new gyms on this street with brand new machines for Golds to still be using machines from back when I was in high-school which was 14 years ago now. The movie theater room movies need to be updated if that's one of your only selling features it should at least have more up to date and recent movie selection also all the machines are so loud because of how old they all sound like they need WD-40 like there struggling to operate you can barely enjoy the movie with the loud grinding noise. I was disappointed that this location never opened back up its pool, hot tub, and Sauna after covid, which was the only reason I kept a membership so long. I was hoping that it would one day return. If I'm being honest the only real selling point of this gym is most of the time it's pretty empty and they have about 2 machines that I have yet to find at other gyms that target my back this location Is probably one of the worser ones in the city and it's due for some major pick up if they would just get new machines reopen that pull and sauna and bring those prices down a few months I'm sure it would go right back to it's prime days. Something to think about.

I really like this location. The staff is so nice and helpful every time I’ve gone. It’s never overly packed like the crunch down the street. My only two complaints would be that the music is always extremely loud even with headphones in. The other is that although the cardio cinema room is mostly great I wish they would take out two of the bikes and put in a stair master.

I enjoyed my membership while I had it, but my positive experience ended when I had to cancel my membership due to moving. Gold's failed to properly cancel my membership and proceeded to charge me my membership fee for 7 months thereafter, and refused to refund me for the entire amount due to some unethical and predatory fine print. It was difficult to get in touch with a manager to sort out this issue, and when I was able to reach the general manager, he was uncooperative and unhelpful. He was not empathetic and implied that the extra charges were my fault, even though the error was made on their end and they failed to complete the termination of my membership. He hung up on me as I was expressing my complaints about how I was treated.
Be aware that they will charge you for services unrendered if you do not catch them in the predatory way they fail to completely terminate your membership, and even though they admit it was a "system error" on their end, you will still be charged for their mistake.
The front desk staff was helpful and responsive, and the assistant manager was nice to speak with, even though he was not able to help me solve the issue. My issue is solely with the customer service I received from Vincent, who could have been much more helpful initially. I understand that his hands may have been tied, but the way I was not called back when I should have been, the uncaring fashion in which my concern was addressed, how I was blamed for "not catching" their own system error as if I am irresponsible or somehow at fault, and the unwillingness to listen to my valid concerns about not only the erroneous charges but also the disrespectful way I was trated, all felt unnecessary and not the type of customer service a person would expect to receive from a general manager. The helpful way to begin would have simply started with "I'm sorry for what happened and I wish I could help, but the best way to get this sorted out is to contact your bank." I assume that this is not the first time he had seen this happen to a member, and it would have been great if he had given me the fastest and most effective way of resolving the issue right off the bat. Being empathized with, rather than blamed, dismissed, and hung up on, would have not solved the problem of being out nearly $300 worth of unfair charges, but it would have made me a happier customer and much more willing to return to Gold's as a member in the future, not to mention would have made for more pleasant conversations. He does not deescalate, but rather exacerbates the issue with a lack of empathy.

Edit 1/3/24: I successfully disputed the charges through my bank and got my money back. Now Gold's is invoicing me for the same membership fees charged in error, PLUS late fees for each month. The corporate email is useless, nobody responds to you. The corporate phone number is an answering service and nobody calls you back.

Edit #2 1/3/24: After meeting with the general manager to discuss the charges made in error, it was decided that I would send emails to corporate every day, call the corporate line relentlessly, and send a certified letter to the corporate office in Dallas. Vincent agreed to send an email to corporate on our behalf in a few days if we had not yet gotten the issue resolved, but refused to cc me on that email. 24 hours later, I received an email from the corporate email stating that the erroneous charges had been fixed and my balance reflected this change. Vincent did give me a call and helped us finalize the details so that I can finally be free of this mess. I appreciate Vincent was able to work with me when he received confirmation of my adjusted final balance and that he sent me proof that my balance was at $0.00. I promised I would adjust this review (because he used it against me at our meeting - again unprofessional) to reflect when/if he helped me sort out this issue to fix my balance, so I will say that when I finally received an email back from corporate after two weeks of trying, he did help me. These people are bullies. Don't go here.

Nice that it’s now open later but would HIGHLY recommend going before 8:00. After this time the local k-12 must take a field trip here unchaperoned. Showing up in designer jeans and graphic ts looking for their first date. 5-10 stand around a machine area and are just plain obnoxious, loud, and rude. Most gyms don’t let kids under 16 without supervision but this is now the hot spot for grade schoolers. I’d rather go to planet fitness than stay at this daycare center. Not too mention the new person is always sitting on his phone and doesn’t acknowledge you. The other people that used to work the front were nice and bubbly and greeted you.

Friendly staff and love the environment. I just wish that there was a better to communicate that you won’t be opening at the time the website states you will open. I understand that it gets cold and rainy and everything closes, but it will be nice that there will be a way to tell people you will be opening 3 hrs later. It avoids wasting gas. I called at 8 and they say that the app was supposed to send a message but I checked the website, email, social media and the app and there was no message that gave that information??? So i canceled my card on file, i gave another card to pay past due balance, but they decided not to put that new card on file. Next month i asked them to remove the late fee since it went past due again because there was no card on file. She said that the will remove the late fee but i checked online and they still charged a late fee. So apparently they like to lie right to your face. I guess workers there really just dont care.

Nice gym. Everyone has been respectful from the workers, who are nice and friendly, to the ones using the gym. I'm new to weightlifting and new to attending a gym. I ask around about Golds and was discouraged why I should not go to Golds as a beginner and I should start at Planet Fitness. I have not felt intimidated by those who are experienced lifters. Many have stepped in and given solid advice. My wife and I have always had a great experience here.

Golds Gym used to be the standard for how a gym should be. But they won’t let me have one camera guy in there for an important small video. So myself and my crew will no longer involve Golds Gym with our activities period. And rude manager as well working this day at noon 08/26. Oh well. On to the next place.

This rating is attributed to the poor handling of a situation involving a mentally unstable employee trying to play the victim. Without getting into unnecessary details, a once friendly rapport turned hostile ALL credit to said employee which led to unprofessional conduct at work. To my surprise it didn't end there. I received a call from the "manager" wanting to discuss the incident that recently took place. I promptly returned the call and received no call back for days. When I showed up to the facility to workout, I asked the front counter to inform the manager that I was present. Prior to leaving I was able to have a sit down with the manager where he simply asked me "what happened?". So I went on to explain the situation. It seemed to me he was biased from the start and being defensive for his employee. He accused me of "stirring the pot", and when I asked him if his employee presented any evidence, he said "No, but you didn't either". As I told him, I do have the receipts so this doesn't have to be a "he said, she said" situation. After that conversation I sent the manager an email of what we discussed just to have it in writing and possibly make it easier to understand. He never acknowledged it. Bottom line is I never said or did anything inappropriate to the employee. If you're going to investigate, be thorough and be fair before you start making recommendations that I go to a different facility. So I'm going to recommend to Victor to think before you speak when dealing with situations between customers and employees and understand you're not the employees' attorney. I'd also recommend a psych evaluation for Nicole, the word that rhymes with witch employee, who doesn't know how to behave at work nor understand the concept of communication, then tries to play the victim.

Awesome gym! Staff is great when I need them. This gym has everything you need to stay fit. Does it get packed at peak times? Yes, but that's almost every gym. I have almost no complaints. The weights might need to be replaced soon. There are little pieces missing from most of them. But not a mahor issue. Great place.

Cons:
PARKING: Wild West style. Lucky if handicaps open and they even park in yellowstriped areas.

MUSIC(?): Not conducive to a productive, positive workout. Feels more like I need a 40oz and a blunt in the hood to stay there. My IQ seems to drop a few listening to the mind-numbing sounds. Something more appropriate thats high energy and easier to listen to for a wider audience would be very MUCH appreciated!!!

I grew up in Chicago projects so, I'm keeping it real.

My EQUIPMENT: There were three recumbent cycles, now only two. Us older folks need options like this. Please replace missing bike.

SHOWERS (Guys): Maintenence & restocking supplies would be greatly appreciated. I do come well-prepared and am glad I bring the extra athlete foot protection. The Southwest Research Institute could culture new life forms from the shower floors, just saying...

Pros: The scanner at entry works.

You need to step-up your game at this location! I was here on opening day years ago and there is a lot of coasting here. Get motivated.

This is my current gym. The place is nice, everything is clean. I don't really have any other Gold's experiences to compare it to but their hours match my availability, the staff are all nice as well. They gave me 1 free session with a personal trainer when I joined as well so not a bad deal for like $27/month.

Best gym in the area for sure. It is affordable, but I wish the pool was still open. I like the functional training area and the equipment options available. Also enjoy the open barbell/dumbbell space. Basketball gym is nice too but could use better ventilation, and dusting. Adding a couple bottle refill stations and staying open later on the weekends would be cool.
