The rec center has just about any machine you could hope for and is VERY affordable. Pick up a brochure for all the programs they offer, pickle ball, Zumba, balance and stretching for seniors etc. Newly offered are art and crafting classes, creating inner peace. Outside in the fresh air you can try the par cours, tennis courts, a wonderful lighted children's playground and dog play area. I feel so spoiled, it's just across from a beautiful walking beach and surrounded by places to eat afterwards. (In the lobby are vending machines offering snacks.)

More than just a gym it’s a community center. I love that there are so many wonderful events and great classes to take. McGuire Debt recreation center has become my home away from my happy place and my stress relief. I’ve taken the yoga class on Monday nights and the HIIT class on Wednesday nights. Both are excellent and so are the instructors. For less than $40 a year you can have access to one of the nicest gyms on the island and free fitness classes. This is a no-brainer. The staff are excellent and the facility is very clean.

My friend’s car was broken into here in broad daylight around 10 am. Despite the doors being locked, they tried car door handles in the parking lot, broke one of my friends handles to get in, and managed to steal a lot of belongings, all caught on camera. They drove a 2006 hoopty. Nothing fancy.

Just a heads-up if you're coming here; nobody seemed surprised this happened! The staff could use some customer service training, especially the red-haired lady at the front who was quite passive-aggressive and rude with management supporting her horrible customer service. The gym is affordable and has what you need, but just know what you’re signing up for!!

Cheap place to get your workout in, but ridiculous rules surrounding the courts. Told I could play what I liked if I brought my own equipment but now they changed the rule for "Racquetball Only" guess that benefits the five people that play it as it keeps the courts open for them. Excuse doesn't make sense, don't see how a badminton birdie or pickleball will damage the area anymore than a racquet ball, but hey, you can always trust government run operations to have goofy regulations.

My boys and I, who are vacationing in Galveston, were welcomed in to play pickleball at the McGuire-Dent rec center. They are a great group of people and the rec center was very nice. This is the 3rd time I’ve play at a rec center in Texas and every time, my experience has been nothing but exceptional.

Great and well-maintained facility. The annual membership is well worth it. There are plenty of treadmills, elliptical machines, free weights, and weighted machines for people to use, and they are well-maintained. There are also 2 racquetball courts, a basketball court, a few classroom studios, and outdoor tennis courts. Pickleball, racquetball, and tennis racquets are available for rent. The various exercise classes are great, and the instructors are friendly and awesome! The rec center is a place for any and everyone, and I like how laid-back it is. Nobody is grunting while working out or trying to show off, unlike what you see at other chain gyms.

Nice city park in Galveston. Has very large playground, lots of green space to run around, community center, basketball courts closer to the water side, and even a skate park. Parking is free for 2 hours and is good place to park for beach too.

In addition to exercise equipment, they have two racket ball courts, a basketball court, classes (included with membership), a pool table, and computers.

I can't say enough about this park. There's a dog park right next to the playground, so you can bring your pet and exercise them while your kids play. They have a skate park there as well, so you can make use of that as well. They have exercise stations there as well so you can work out. I won't even mention the gym, but I will say it's great. There's a community garden next to the playground. I see people going in there and tending to their plants. They have a splash pad that they use during the hot months. The merry-go-round is not the kind I grew up with, and that's probably for the best. We're big fans of the jungle gym and slides, and their slides are really tall. I wish they had more swings they have different kinds. There are soft rubber pads underneath the playground equipment, and I'm thankful for that because we've taken some spills there,

My husband and I visited The McGuire-Dent Recreation Center to see what they have to offer and I have to say we were shocked by the amenities for so cheap!

I'm not one that works out, at all, ever, and it shows. I was finally able to acquire medical insurance after many years without and surprise surprise, guess who needs to "make some changes"...hence the visit to the Rec Center.

As one that's not familiar with working out I won't be able to name many of the machines or equipment offered here but there are weights, free weights, elliptical, treadmills, a pool, pickleball, and some sort of floor exercises where a lady was softly repeating the phrase "downward dog" while folks pointed their bums towards the heavens. Do with that information what you will....but they offer that here.

This Rec Center is on Seawall Blvd so while you use most machines your view is of the Gulf of Mexico. There's also several exercise accoutrement outdoors that's available for free. Before this deliberate visit to the Rec Center portion of this area, the closest I've ever been was the dog park in the back of the property.

The dude showing us around was very helpful. He said he was initially just a patron but eventually felt he should help others become members so now works there as well as work out there. We were there about 6pm on a weekday and there were machines available.

Ok so look, as a local, $30 for a gym membership you just can't beat...not per month....PER YEAR! Per year folks! You're not gonna find that deal anywhere.

I wanted to start working out and so did my niece but we have been advised you got to be 17 to use equipment because all the younger kids were taking from the adults I think if accompanied by a parent it should be allowed if they are working out together. I will not go by myself and neither will she been advised she can not attend the yoga class with me either 😔 so I guess neither of us will be going

I love this park when I visit Galveston it's directly behind the recreational center the recreational center is awesome military get free membership they are also nice in there and accommodating always love going in there and talking to them they occasionally have theirs festivals in front on the lawn just love this place need to be open on Sundays but that's okay because I only need the bathroom for the park total thumbs up thank you so much!!!

I brought my family here to the park to stretch and play and let the dog run, but I didn't get to do that. As I was parking my big truck there were some "little boys " messing with us while I was trying to park my truck. So we didn't even get to walk around the park like we wanted an I loaded my family back up an went down to the pier!

It's a nice place to take your kids to play. Clean, safe, and well-kept. They have a fun, huge, super-athletic gymboree with a sailing or pirate-ship theme. In the summer there is a kid's play fountain for water fun. There's a go-round, baby and big kid swings, and my favorite, an elliptical spinner! The turf is soft and the play park is probably big enough for a hundred kids. Drinking fountains. Port-a-potties. Picnic grounds with covered tables. Skateboard park, dog park, tennis courts, and outdoor gym equipment on campus. Free and easy parking. Dogs on leash. One block from the Seawall. Restaurants within walking distance.

This is a great rec center available for free to any Galveston resident with a valid ID. Access to computers, game room with a pool table and ping pong table, workout area, basketball and racquetball court. The workout area features a complete line of stationary resistance training equipment (machine weights) and a large variety of cardiovascular equipment including treadmills, elipticals and bikes. Very big locker rooms with showers and toilets. No need to worry about what to do with your kids as there is plenty of entertainment to keep then busy.

Mixed review. My son has only been here once.
BUT PEOPLE: LEAVE YOUR VALUABLES AT HOME IT WILL BE STOLEN.
This place I assumed would be safe and my son wanted to ball. And it might be.

But we are visiting Galveston past 9 years. (I'm from here). My son was ballin with local galvestonians who seemed nice. The guys asked him questions, figured out out-of-towner, took the opportunity to take advantage of him, then stole his bag in FULL view of my son.....with portable $300 speaker, (he played while ballin)...vape, wallet with ID and bank card, iPhone 7 plus.
I mean my son was the only one playing and these creeps ASKED if they could play w him. WOW. I've NEVER had problems with Galveston.
My rating:
NO STARS. Front guy kind of nice. Not at all helpful about our stuff being stolen one bit when police needed his address. He was very short with my son in answering. It was almost closing time.
Just WOW. BEWARE!!!!
