I think that this is an incredibly good boxing gym. I have had many positive experiences when doing the stretch class, then run afterwards. Richard Lord's is one of the best for getting into shape. There's no messing about or excuses. This place is all about building serious strength through serious training.

If you're a competitive boxer looking for a new gym, a boxer from out of state looking for a temporary gym to train at, or just somebody looking to get into boxing, then this is the perfect place. None of the paying for classes taught by inexperienced people, subscription based models that you get with these newer gyms. Pay your fee, and you'll be left alone if you want to be left alone or trained if you ask for some help.
They've got some good technical guys to spar in there that are there to work with you and not hurt you, and the coach cares for your safety as well as his fighters safety. It's very rare to find a gym where you can walk in, ask for rounds, and get some good and fairly paced sparring where the fighter and coach has your back.

Training at Richard Lord's Boxing Gym in Austin, Texas, for over three years has been a rewarding and inspiring journey. This is not just a gym, it's a vibrant community, a testament to the dedication of Richard Lord, our trustworthy and talented coach.
Richard possesses a magnetic blend of tenacity, skill, and an endearing sense of humor that makes every intense training session enjoyable. His commitment to safety is evident, ensuring we are correctly executing each punch and footwork while making sure boxers are always properly equipped with the safest sparring gear, minimizing the risk of injury while maximizing our boxing potential.
The aesthetic of the gym is reminiscent of a beautifully curated vintage boxing museum, which adds to its unique charm. From the historic boxing posters adorning the walls to the well-worn gloves and bags, every corner tells a tale of the science of boxing.
One should not underestimate the rigor of the training. It's challenging, pushing you physically and mentally, but the results are worth every drop of sweat. Under Richard's expert guidance, my strength, agility, and resilience have significantly improved. It's a tough program, but if you commit, you'll emerge stronger, tougher, and more disciplined than ever.
What's more, Richard's dedication extends beyond the ring, into the heart of the Austin community. The camaraderie among the gym members is palpable, and Richard fosters this sense of unity, often organizing local events and supporting local causes.
If you're in Austin and looking for an authentic, challenging, and rewarding boxing experience, look no further than Richard Lord's Boxing Gym. You will be part of a special community, guided by a mentor whose expertise and humor make every visit a pleasure.

Good old fashioned boxing gym. I looked around and decided to work out here due to their no nonsense old school feel, and it was definitely the BEST decision I have made for myself in a long time! I’ve lost ten pounds in the first month working out here on a keto diet and never thought I could get into shape this fast! Now I just need a good sparring partner so come sign up and look for me!!!

The gym is an old school type of gym but it is great, only about 2 weeks in and I have gotten considerably stronger and better.
The gym also has a great atmosphere, there is no competition even though it is a mostly do it yourself type of experience. Richard himself is awesome and has plenty of awesome stories to tell.
Overall the gym is a 11/10

A great place to get in shape, and hang out with world champions, past, present, and future. A place to learn inner peace and strength. Lord's gym is an ever-present state of mind in the boxers and fitness enthusiasts who've been fortunate enough to be a member. From this humble gym, charter flights to Caesar's Palace have been booked, arenas sold out, and opponents ko'd in title fights. Richard, his son Tiger, provide world class training for some, and a place to do a few situps for an old guy like me.

This Boxing Gym is a true Austin Local Favorite and Original! The owner and Head Trainer is the real deal... Richard Lord grew up boxing as a kid - his father managed and trained Boxing World Champions. I was fortunate to train with Richard in the early 1980's when his gym was on 6th St. & San Jacinto. He was a World-class fighter and trainer then - and if you have the opportunity to train at his gym now, you are very fortunate. Richard Lord's Boxing Gym is one of a kind - and one of the Local Originals that make Austin unique and Special!

I was in Austin for a couple of weeks for work and Richard gave me a good price to train here while visiting. Great atmosphere, welcoming people, and overall just an awesome experience. I highly recommend this gym to those trying to get in shape and those who take boxing seriously. It was a true boxing gym that exceeded all my expectations and a great two weeks with these guys. I'll miss it.

In reply to Haoqing Geng's review:
This person wrote a negative review though admittedly has never attended.
I train here. I am a woman. I wear makeup. I feel equally treated. There are, in fact, articles printed and proudly framed on the walls of the gym on the topic of the women boxers who train here.
If the reviewer had merely stepped inside, they wouldn't have to request to be corrected if wrong. They'd know.

I can't see myself paying $75 a month for this gym. The setup is really good, it has a good amount of punching bags, uppercut/hook bags, I'm pretty sure I saw double end bags and speed bags but can't remember. There's two boxing rings, some workout equipment and the back is an open lot where they kinda have crossfit equipment. I think there's battle ropes (not 100% sure), and I know they have a big tire sledgehammer, and a few other things.
My problem with the price was that I just didn't see the value. For $75, I expect to receive some kind of training or something. Maybe a fitness class? I know it's supposed to be a real gym and not like a CKO fitness kickboxing style gym but this gym kinda seems like it's just $75 to use the gym . There was a trainer in there who said she never actually boxed. There was very little interaction with others at this gym. If it was $35-$50 for this experience, I would give it 5 stars because it is a cool gym but I don't feel like this would be a good gym to actually learn anything or self defense for $75 a month. I'm sure they'll teach you if you pay for one on one sessions. I've been too much much much cheaper boxing gyms. Go take a martial arts class instead where people will interact with you, other students with higher belts will help you and teach you, you practice drills, you spar, etc. This gym had none of those. Most people seemed friendly and there were some meatheads but the atmosphere was alright overall. It's also not in the best neighborhood so they really should relax with those prices.

My son trained at Richard Lord's for a few years, a while back. He turned out to be a
Great southpaw. I'm not bragging because
he's my son, but, honestly, he wouldn't have
the skills that he has today, if Richard Lord's
Gym didn't exist. If Richard happens to read
this, a million thanks. Unfortunately, we moved out of Austin. I really believe that Richard would've had another PRIZE FIGHTER.
Everyone there, were very profession, according to John. Thanks again, Frank Zapata, ( John's dad )

I hate writing bad reviews but I couldn't get past how Richard treated my 14 year old son in front of everyone in his class. My son had a hard time doing his exercises and Richard repeatedly embarrassed and singled him out the whole session. It was my son and adults and he told him "why can't you do the exercises, everyone else can do them." My son replied I am not everyone else. He continued to keep stating he can do the fast pace hard exercises because everyone else can. I felt it would of been better if he understood everyone learns different and just took notes. He insisted I leave or wait outside in the car because my son needs space. I expressed to him my son has a very hard time with stuff and he didnt take that in consideration, instead he called him out throughout the whole time. When I addressed my concerns and said my son is different he replied I see he is different. I was meaning he is a kid not one of his adult students. It would be more helpful if he learned his students and worked with beginners and not expect them to come in and just pick up his teaching and not put them down. I paid this guy to humiliate my son in front of a group instead of empowering him.

Watch where you park or the fatass 'teacher' will come b**** you out. Even if it's your first day, Richard seemed like a nice guy though.
Probably won't come back since they have someone treating customers like that. what a shame.
