I’ve been going to Starting Strength for about a month, and I’m honestly loving it! Every session makes me feel stronger and more confident. The workouts may look simple, but they’re super effective — all about learning the right technique and making real progress.

Coach Morgan is awesome — super friendly, motivating, and pays close attention to every detail. You can tell he truly cares about helping you improve. The gym has a great vibe — everyone’s genuinely happy with their progress, and it’s really motivating to be around that energy.

It’s a small group setup, but feels almost like personal training. I’m so glad I joined — can’t wait to see how much stronger I’ll get in the next few months! 💪

All the equipment you need to become a stronger and better person is here in this fantastic gym. The Starting Strength method works for everyone including you.

My coach Josh was professional, friendly, and efficient with my lifts. The other members I worked out with were upbeat and fun to talk with. I will definitely be back next time I'm in Plano. Thanks againfor the coaching, Josh.

I worked with Coach Morgan at Starting Strength for about a year and absolutely loved my experience. The facilities are super nice and clean, you have average people who are all just looking to (and succeeding at!) getting really strong. It's a very casual and fun atmosphere with a heck of a training program. I had to cancel my membership due to moving but would 10/10 recommend this location and program to anyone regardless of experience with weight lifting.

I am a 70 year old Male. I was complaining to my son about losing muscle mass and he talked me into trying Starting Strength in Plano, where he works out. To be honest, I was hesitant about barbell training. Like most people my age I have a laundry list of old injuries and, for lack of a better phrase, an interesting health history. I figured it would be 2-3 weeks before I would be sidelined, either by aggravating an old injury or adding a new one to the list. And had I been working out on my own that is exactly what would have happened. But at Starting Strength you have a talented and experienced coaching staff supporting you every step of the way. They have a myriad of techniques for tailoring the exercises to your needs so you can continue to work out, no matter your limitations. I have worked with Michael the most, but also Brent and Josh. All of them are outstanding and have helped me and taught me a lot. Pay the money, show up and do the work the way they tell you to do it, and you will be surprised and pleased with the results.

Update!!!

I had high hopes for this gym, and I really appreciated working with Morgan, who was supportive and professional throughout my time there. Unfortunately, my experience with the gym’s management and policies left me frustrated and disappointed.

I clearly communicated my intent to cancel my membership directly to the head coach via Slack (their main communication platform) weeks in advance, yet I was still charged for a billing cycle I never used. Despite explaining my situation, the gym insisted on keeping a portion of the payment, citing policy and platform issues—even though I hadn’t attended a single session since my cancellation request.

I understand the need for formal processes, but it’s disappointing to feel unheard as a paying client. I left feeling that my loyalty and experience weren’t truly valued at all.

I hope others have a smoother experience, but unfortunately, this left a very negative impression for me.

I am in the over 75 crowd. I just completed my first month at the gym, and I feel different—better. As a typical female of my age, my experience with weights was limited to 5-10-15 hand weights. At SS, I do three sessions a week with coaches and several other lifters. It is actually a lot of fun. The conversation ranges from German philosophy to hip-hop music with frequent dad jokes and puns. So far, I have not graduated from squats without weights, but I am doing presses, bench presses and dead lifts. Really! Michael and Josh are helpful, encouraging, and taskmasters all at the same time. The health advice out there says you need strength to keep healthy and able to enjoy your old age. I’m convinced it’s true, and it’s taking me less than 5 hours a week to achieve. Did I say, this is fun? I can’t believe it.

First off I am a 20 year old college student. Starting strength is often marketed towards those middle age or older(30+), but I can promise you my experience here has been incredible despite the age difference.

Michael Jones (my instructor) has been endlessly entertaining during rests as well as incredibly knowledgeable with the lifts. I came in with little to no experience in power lifting, and with only a few weeks of experience under my belt, feel confident on all the lifts I’m doing thanks to Michael.

While starting strength is certainly not the cheapest option, the money is absolutely worth it, and is a very good rate for the 1 on 1 coaching you get every class. I plan on continuing with starting strength for the future, and don’t know if I’ll ever be able to find another gym as enjoyable as this one.

I started training at Starting Strength Plano in the fall of 2020 as a complete novice to barbell training, and at the time, the idea of stepping into a gym—especially one focused on heavy lifting—felt very intimidating. But from the very beginning, the coaches and community at SS Plano turned that feeling around.

Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to train with four or five different coaches, and every single one of them has been incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about what they do. In particular, Michael Jones stands out as an exceptional coach who truly cares about his trainees' progress and success. His ability to break down the lifts, correct form, and push just the right amount has been invaluable in helping me improve while staying injury-free.

Not only has SS Plano helped me get strong, but it has also kept me strong over the long run. The structured programming, expert coaching, and small group setting create the perfect environment for steady, measurable progress. More importantly, it has become a place where I can leave behind the stresses of the day, focus on training, and walk out feeling better—both physically and mentally.

If you’re looking for a gym where you’ll receive expert coaching, train alongside supportive people, and actually enjoy the process of getting stronger, Starting Strength Plano is the place to go.

Six months ago, I had never lifted a weight in my life. Now, I can squat 230 lbs, feel ridiculously strong, and wonder why I didn’t start sooner. Big shoutout to Starting Strength and my coach, who somehow makes getting under a heavy bar both productive and hilarious.

He’s not just a coach—he’s part comedian, part mad scientist, always tweaking my workouts to fit my body’s needs. Miss a session? No problem. The schedule is flexible enough that I can always make it up (no excuses, I know). The motivation is real, the gains are solid, and the whole experience has been surprisingly fun.

If you’re on the fence about strength training, just do it. Your future strong self will thank you.

I joined off a recommendation on a post for best beginner gyms in Plano. I'd been looking for a gym where I could also have at least a small group, if not personal, trainer that will walk me through the baby steps of strength training.

What drew me was a comment sharing that people from all walks of life were finding success, from 18 year olds to 75 year olds. As an inactive, late 20s software engineer, I was drawn and quickly took advantage of a free session to learn more. In 30 minutes, they taught me how to deadlift. From that session alone, I knew this would be the right place for me.

I spent 2 months at Starting Strength Plano. In the first week alone, I immediately noticed a difference in the way I did everyday things like getting up off the floor or even out of a chair. Now I'm nearing the end of my second month, I've noticed small things like my work backpack or my pups being lighter when, in fact, I've actually gotten much stronger. My progress has been incredible, and I now share it as a fact that you would have never guessed just by looking at me.

This is the first gym I've ever signed up for because I'd been so intimidated by potentially getting trapped in a membership contract. There are no contracts here, and it is such an easy cancellation process. It feels silly to talk about that in a 5-star review, but that's something important to me that I know is important to others as well.

The only reason I've canceled is because of the distance to my home. I'm going to miss Morgan and the small community I've found in the class, but I hope to be able to drop in every now and then for a form/progress check-in. I will definitely be recommending Starting Strength to anyone and everyone who will listen.

Starting Strength-Plano is the only training facility in the Plano-Frisco-Prosper area one should consider membership to improve personal strength as well as correctly learn the essential compound lifts - squat, bench, dead lift, overhead press and power clean.

The coaches are competent teachers that can coach members on the correct barbell movements with sound progressive programming. The facility is clean and well equipped. All members (young and old) are there for one reason - get progressively stronger.

Starting Strength Plano offers an exceptional strength training experience that has left me not only stronger than ever before but also deeply impressed with the expertise and effectiveness of the program and its coaches.

The results speak for themselves. By adhering to the Starting Strength method, I've achieved a level of strength I never thought possible. The program's emphasis on a small number of compound lifts has been crucial in ensuring that my strength gains are not just a matter of lifting heavier weights but also about lifting them correctly.

Starting Strength Plano is more than just a gym; it's a transformative experience. Starting Strength Plano is a perfect blend of serious strength training and a dose of humor. Coach Jones' dad jokes have become a trademark during our sessions. They not only lighten the mood but create a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. You can't help but chuckle between sets, and it makes the workouts feel less like a chore and more like a social gathering. But don't let the dad jokes and DJ skills fool you; Coach Jones is incredibly knowledgeable about strength training. His explanations and guidance are clear, and he tailors his approach to suit each individual's needs and goals. You can tell he's dedicated to helping you succeed. I genuinely look forward to my classes at Starting Strength Plano. It's not just about getting stronger; it's about the community, the humor, the music, and the expert guidance. I couldn't have asked for a better coach or a better place to work on my strength goals.

Starting Strength Gym in Plano is a fantastic place for individuals of all ages looking to increase strength and muscle for overall improved health. The trainers at Starting Strength gyms are highly trained and knowledge experts at coaching you to achieve any strength training goals you may require.

I'm an older adult (over 60) and have been running for over 20 years which has provided me with great endurance. However, years of endurance running along with a Keto base diet in recent years left me in a much frailer state due to the significant loss of muscle. After doing extensive research on the benefits of strength training, I realized that strength training at my age has to be my primary health goal going forward versus the muscle wasting effect from years of endurance running. Strength training provides numerous health benefits, such as lower risk of heart disease and diabetes, stronger bones, improved brain health and mood as well as improved self-esteem.

I've been training at the Plano gym for about three months now under the expert care of my training coach Michael Jones. Michael is an excellent trainer but beyond that he is a caring person who is totally dedicated to helping you achieve your personal strength related goals. Michael has gone above and beyond the norm in helping me get stronger all the while feeling safer lifting heavy weights at a later age in life. I came to Starting Strength as a beginner in barbell training and feel I have gained a tremendous amount of knowledge in proper lifting techniques and exercise programming. Despite being there only 3 months with a two week training interruption due to an illness I have achieved excellent strength gains. My squat strength has increased by 65 pounds, my bench press has increased by 50 pounds and my deadlift by 90 pounds.

Starting Strength Plano will provide you with highly trained and very knowledgeable strength coaches like Michael Jones who know their stuff! You can be certain you are in expert hands and are learning from the best in the strength training business from people who care about you and want to see you succeed in becoming stronger and healthier! I am very happy I discovered them and I feel very confident that I am on my way to being stronger later in life than I have ever been!

My initial goal in coming to this gym was that I wanted someone to teach me how to safely lift weights. I was not interested in doing something that would carelessly cause injuries nor playing around on some goofy machines. The coaches here are great at safely teaching the techniques for the barbell lifts. The programming is geared toward the goals you have. If you are interested in getting stronger, you definitely will here. After almost two years, I'm lifting weights that I had previously never considered a possibility of lifting. For those of you who have read "Starting Strength" by Mark Rippetoe (aka, the "Blue Book"), you'll know exactly what you're getting into when you sign up for this gym. A very clean setup with racks, barbells, weights, and a no-nonsense approach to strength training.

Prior to joining, I had been lifting on my own for about a year based on books that I read and videos I watched on YouTube. But still a novice lifter by all means. But that can only take you so far and once I started getting stuck, I decided it was time to get a coach to take things to the next level.

The coaching at SS Plano is first-class. Jacob T and Daniel R are extremely knowledgeable in the techniques and methods outlined in "Starting Strength" and provided me with useful cues and a customized programing for my goals and abilities. Plus the classes have a very encouraging atmosphere, no matter the skill level.

Since joining about 9 months ago, I have increased my Squat by 45 lbs, Bench by 40 lbs, and Deadlift by 95 lbs. You still have to show up and do the work, but the coaching and environment makes it easier to make progress towards my goals.

I’ve read SSC books by Coach Rippetoe, and while useful, there’s no substitute for having someone like Michael review every one of my workouts and optimize the program for continued results. If you can’t get to an SSC gym, I’d recommend checking out the online program at Starting Strength Plano.

For those looking to get stronger quickly and safely, the Starting Strength gym in Plano offers expert coaching in a clean, well-organized facility. Not just a gym but an investment in my future health. I'm not going to become a frail, middle-aged woman with low bone density and chronic back pain. Better than a meditation retreat for your mental health. The coaches are highly competent and qualified, NOT a super fit dude that took a 3-week online certification. You get what you pay for, and I would rather pay now for strength that will save me future insane medical costs in my old age.

I’ve been going to Starting Strength for about two years now. One of the best choices I’ve made for my health. I came in as a total beginner lifter and ended up loving the exercise. I went from squatting 125 to squatting up to 330. No matter what your fitness goals are they are very cooperative. My first goal was to gain strength which they easily helped with. Then I wanted to lose weight and cut body fat. It took months but they worked with me to create goals and adjust my workout plan. Now that I lost the weight I am working with them on gaining strength and lean muscle without gaining fat. No matter what your athletic goals are, strength training is a great supplement. Most of my time here I worked with Coach Jacob. Jacob is the most ideal coach to work with. He’s passionate about my improvement and growth. He genuinely makes every workout entertaining. Every personal trainer should be like Jacob. I strongly recommend stopping by for an open house and you’ll easily see what I mean.

Regardless how I've shown up, I've never left this gym in a bad mood. I love this place. Our coaches do a fantastic job of distilling barbell training to the fundamentals, giving pointed one-on-one feedback in real time. They will help you get comfortable with being uncomfortable, pushing your boundaries, all while learning to execute these movements properly and safely. I came in with low back pain from a herniated disc, and building that muscle to help stabilize the spine through well coached squats and deadlifts has been a critical component in recovery. I'm confident in the team that surrounds me, from my fellow gym-goers, to the community of coaches that are constantly consulting with one another on best practices for specific cases.

Courage, Discipline, Strength, and Community are in no short supply here. It takes Courage to hit depth in your squat & stay in your hips; It takes Discipline to show up to each training session, just SHOW UP; Your results are unquestionable gains in Strength and improved body composition; and you'll undoubtedly bond with the people in your class. Stronger is better, always has been, always will be!

This year I turned 65 years old and I have never felt stronger! After suffering with chronic back pain for over one year I finally decided to strengthen my core; but I wanted a trainer that would actually take my desire to weight train seriously so that I would not do further damage to my lower back. A friend of mine suggested I try Starting Strength Gym so I made an appointment to see what they offered. After meeting with the owner, Brent, I was sold immediately!
My strength coach, Michael, has designed a special program for me to safely squat, deadlift, and press. He pushes me and motivates me to be the best that I can be, so that I make slow steady gains each week. He absolutely makes sure that I will not hurt myself but watching all my lifts. The community that I train with are considered friends. We encourage each other weekly and celebrate our milestones as a team. You could not ask for a better environment to train in. Invested coach and supportive fellow athletes!
This year I back squatted 150 pounds and deadlifted 195. This doesn't sound like much to some people but it is a miracle for an older woman who suffers from back pain.
If you want to build strength, confidence, and just plain feel BADASS I encourage you to join our group at Starting Strength Plano. You won't be disappointed! You will be amazed at what you can do!

The coaches are smart, interesting, and engaging; in fact, I suspect these are some of the smartest coaches you will find at any gym. The gym is welcoming and encouraging, and there are people from all walks and stages of life. The program is simple. You will learn how to squat, deadlift, press, and bench (the key compound exercises) according to the specific techniques that Mark Rippetoe has articulated. Rip's techniques make sense scientifically, and the coaches will help you implement them in a way that is safe and tailored to your individual needs and specific anthropometry.

We chose Starting Strength because we believed in the core philosophy of stress, recovery, and adaptation. (and box jumps look terrifying). Recognizing that being expert-level couch potatoes wasn't good for our long-term health outlook, we joined the Plano gym soon after it opened.

Christian and Maxine have turned my wife into a beast 😉. She keeps our gym time sacred. She won't schedule anything that would conflict with moving heavy things. Every session she gets stronger and is able to load more cast iron to the bar. It is a joy to see her confidence and strength grow each session.

I have needed plenty of adaptation. Shoulder mobility limitations took the press off the table. Instead, we work on the incline bench press until the shoulder heals. Low bar back squats are also out. The gym's Marrs Bar allows me to squat and increase the load most every session.

Three months in, I've topped out of the linear progression and I have to work harder to put more load on the bar. I'm very pleased with the progress each of us has made. Clothes are fitting less snug and we've had to down-size things in our wardrobe.

So this is the start of my 3rd week of training at the Plano SS location. This past weekend I went to Waco to watch the Baylor game with the family.
Normally going up stairs hurts my knees and takes a concentrated effort and I’m so out of shape I need to stop for a few breaths to get my wind back...
We went to the parking garage about a mile from the stadium, walked over and went up 4 flights of stairs to get to the second level to our seats...no knee or back pain and not winded....now I wasn’t running up the stairs to be sure but keeping pace with the crowd, and just went over, grabbed our drinks and sat down and enjoyed the game.
I don’t know that SS could have that much impact that fast....but my back and knees are pain free for the first time in a long time.....

I was thrilled to see the world famous Starting Strength gym come to Plano. After a single in person training session, I understood how to properly do the squat and deadlift. Following the success of Starting Strength Dallas, Brent Carter has opened Starting Strength Plano. I have had the great fortune to train with Brent and his coaches for almost two years now. I could not be happier with my results.

No matter your age, fitness, physical condition, or weightlifting experience (or lack thereof), If you are serious about wanting to get strong, this is where you want to be. Brent Carter and his team of expert coaches will teach you the proper barbell lifting techniques and will provide critique and feedback for you every training session as you progress through the program. Developed by Mark Rippetoe, the Starting Strength methodology is designed to increase strength through four basic compound barbell lifts - the squat, deadlift, overhead press, and bench press. Trainees will typically perform three of the four barbell lifts per training session for 3 work sets of 5 reps. Squats and deadlifts are typically performed every training session and overhead press and bench press will alternate between sessions. As the trainee successfully completes a session, weight on the bar is increased for the next training session. Methodically and steadily, trainees lift heavier and heavier weights, and strength correspondingly increases. You will get strong.

The gym is bright, airy, clean, and very well designed. Every lifter has their own dedicated platform during the training session. The bars and weights are of superb quality.

Training is typically conducted in 90 minute classes comprised of 4-8 lifters. Coaches provide initial instruction (and additional instruction if/as necessary) for every trainee. The coaches also critique and provide feedback for trainees for their last warm up set and for every work set. As every trainee has his or her own pace (there is usually about 5 minutes rest between work sets), there is ample time for the coaching staff to rotate among trainees and dedicate 100% attention to each trainee's lifts. I liken this to having a teaching golf pro accompany you for an entire 18 hole round, providing instruction for every swing.

Training at a Starting Strength gym is an incredible value. Instead of paying an exorbitant amount for 30-45 minutes of a personal trainer's one-on-one time, the Starting Strength trainee, for a lower price, receives individualized attention for every lift. Aside from financial savings, the best "value" one gets training at a Starting Strength gym is the increase in one's strength. Like I said, you will get strong.

Finally, a few words about the atmosphere and camaraderie at Starting Strength gyms. Brent and his staff are truly first-rate. They are experienced, extremely knowledgeable, dedicated to helping their trainees, and caring. Trainees come from all sorts of ages and backgrounds and have all sorts of weight training abilities and experiences. No matter if you are an experienced lifter, or if you have never lifted a barbell before, you will be warmly welcomed by Brent and his staff and by your fellow gym mates. Everyone celebrates each other's achievements in the journey of developing strength, and this also contributes to making Starting Strength gyms such wonderful places to train.
