I love climbing so and i regularly climb at Dillo and utsa, upon climbing here with a couple of friends for the first time ive been turned off from coming back. unfortunately the staff can be rude and make comments if you mention that you have climbed at any other climbing gym.
The community here is no better after speaking to multiple climbers here they come across as rude and unaccepting to new members. The people here seem to have a big superiority complex, and if your not a pro climber they wont waste time talking to you.
Which came at a complete shock because its the exact opposite of what I expected from a sport where people are usually very social and friendly, i dont think any gym needs to be better than the other and i dont think climbers should be ridiculed for climbing at other locations.

Best indoor gym! If you climb here, you’ll get strong and be prepared to send boulders outside. The setters are amazing, especially the head setter, Josh. They put a lot of of thought into their sets and always give us stuff to work on. Highly recommend!

Pretty cool gym with a variety of skill levels. The setting resembles outdoor climbing with a lot of crimps and shouldery moves. Felt like more of an old-style gym which I appreciated, and everyone was super friendly and helpful.

Pretty comprehensive calisthenic and weight equipment, with a 2016 moonboard and what looks like a traverse wall. Seems like a good place to get strong πŸ’ͺ

Only complaint is people need to brush more :)

They over charged me. Some employees tried to be helpful some were no help. Eventually it got back to the OWNER who personally said there was nothing he could do about it.

The only reason I’m giving this place 2 stars vice a lower rating is because Josh was at least very nice and patient during the intro class. As for the rest of the staff, I cannot say the same. Nobody was at the front desk when I got there so I was waiting around while the person working the front desk was climbing rather than working (I get it, but be more attentive at least). Nobody greeted me or had any customer service skills except Josh. It felt very cliquish and unwelcoming. I did not feel that they wanted my business except for Josh. The shoes they rented out smelled absolutely FOUL.. I don’t think they ever cleaned them. I also had no clue not to take the climbing shoes into the restroom because as a first time climber, nobody told me and there are no signs. The front desk person told me after I came out when they directed me to the restroom after seeing me walk in there with the shoes to begin with, and then told me β€œnot to take it the wrong way” that I can’t wear the shoes in the bathroom. With how bad the shoes smelled, I think that should be the least of their worries. I waited around for the class to start and finally someone told me I had to go up to Josh (nobody really directed me to say the class had already started before the 7:15 start time). I almost left because I felt like such an outcast there. After visiting another rock climbing gym in SA, I can say that The District was very dirty compared to the other place. I almost gave up the hobby because of this bad experience but glad to say I found somewhere better in San Antonio.

I’m posting this review on behalf of my partner who recently visited this gym. We feel compelled to share her experience as it raises serious concerns about the professional standards of this establishment.

During a recent competition hosted at this gym, the management displayed a sign-up sheet with participant usernames that contained highly inappropriate, vulgar content. I’ve attached a photo of the competition sign-up sheet that shows the type of inappropriate names that are apparently allowed at this gym.

This public display showed a concerning lack of judgment and oversight from the management team. My partner felt unsafe and unwelcome.

Personally, I also find it wild that my partner cannot post this review herself due to safety concerns. She has observed how management responds to critical reviews, attempting to identify reviewers by checking attendance records. The fact that we must take these precautions is appalling and further demonstrates the unprofessional nature of this establishment. No one should feel unsafe about providing honest feedback.

new to climbing/bouldering, and this place is a great start. smaller gym but challenging . some folks complain about it being difficult but thats something i really enjoy about this place. if the climb is getting the best of me im not going to complain about it being unfair, ill just go one grade lower and work on my strength, stamina, and technique.
if i had to list one con, it would be the parking. but thats not really solvable unless the midas went out of business or agreed to share the lot after hours

To begin, I started bouldering about a month and a half ago. I'm 20, and (I like to think) pretty strong and at the two other bouldering gyms ive been to, they offer a wide range of difficulty and wall types for people of all types. This simply isn't so for this place. While the walls are constantly changing, as is true for all bouldering gyms, when I went they had exactly 4 climbs I was able to complete. The difficulty floor at this gym is incredibly high, and I struggled with some of the v1s here. Most of the walls are at a decline, for an even larger disadvantage. If you are incredibly skilled at bouldering, this is the place for you. Aside from that, it doesn't offer much to those of us who only boast average skills or just getting into the hobby. Customer service was very good however, and is where they are getting most of their points.

It's a fun gym to climb at. But it's always dirty, seems like nothing is ever cleaned. Staff was never at the desk so took forever to get a day pass, and even after I did i couldn't buy any drinks since they weren't there. I see that it's friendly but not much of a business with how they run things.

If you're an advanced climber who's young, ripped, and wants to be part of a small bouldering clique, this is the place for you. I went yesterday as part of their $7 after 5pm special and ended up leaving after 15 minutes because there wasn't much for me to do. Almost all of the (very few) climbing walls were slanted, meaning a beginner would only have 1 or 2 flat walls to work with at most. In addition, there are no free chalk dispensers, so if you don't bring your own chalk, you're up a creek without a paddle. The second star is purely for good customer service since the man at the front desk (Ethan) was very polite and friendly. I wanted to like The District since I've been getting into bouldering and wanted to try a new place, but sadly it was too small and intimidating for me to want to come back. I'll continue to go to my usual bouldering place off of Camden Street since it's much bigger and worth the money.

Hands down the hardest and most badass gym in Texas. Most of the routes are based on outdoor routes as the setters are all v10+ outdoor climbers which makes the routes challenging for even strong climbers. The staff are friendly and welcoming but be prepared to get a serious workout if you’re coming to the district!

I really wanted to like this gym. My partner and I were so excited to get back into some kind of alternative fitness but when we walked in, it felt pretty clear that we were not the target audience. Nearly all the walls have a greater than 90 degree angle, and the one that didn't seemed to only have really small holds - like it was an afterthought. It is not a beginner friendly gym.

Literally all the other patrons in the gym at the time were lanky, muscular, experienced male climbers that had their own clique. The bouldering area is incredibly compact and the guys sat in the middle of the area so we felt like we were disrupting their space by trying to figure out what was accessible to us and where we could start.

The equipment offerings did seem varied and intriguing, but the atmosphere was so exclusive and off-putting that we turned around and asked for our money back since we didn't end up even really trialing the gym.

The incredibly nice front desk person (the only reason my partner and I even really stuck around to try the gym) said they were a new employee and they needed to ask how to do a refund. They walked to the group of lanky guys sitting in the middle of the bouldering area mats and pulled one of them to talk to us. He asked why we weren't happy with the experience and wanted our money back. We said it wasn't really what we were looking for. He and a random patron both continued to prod and ask why we wanted a refund and to leave, like they took it personally that it wasn't our scene. It's not unreasonable to look for feedback, but we were already uncomfortable and the questions seemed to persist far past our genuine answer, like they could convince us to change our mind.

We were then told (through a smile) that they didn't know how to process a refund and there probably wasn't a way to do it. We didn't want to make a scene and just wanted to leave, so we said okay and left. I did end up disputing the charge because we wandered around the gym looking at the offerings for maybe 10 minutes and the request for a refund felt pretty reasonable.

Like I said before, I had really high hopes for this place. I picked it as the best option out of everything I researched in the San Antonio area and felt so confident that we'd be able to fit right in. If you're already experienced and looking for a challenging, compact space, this might be right for you. If you're looking to get back into climbing and bouldering after being away for several years, look elsewhere.

Update 8/28: the AC and added insulation have improved the temp inside so I added the extra star!

I went to The District while I was down in San Antonio just to keep in shape because I live in Madison Wisconsin. I was so pleasantly surprised how much of a family environment it was like. Everyone was so nice while I was there for two weeks. They’re boldering problems and grading are very good and challenging. I got the chance to observe their route setters changing out a wall so it seems you’ll get a lot of variety and progression by going. I had a blast! Thanks!

A real gritty uncorporatized climbing gym. You smell that climbing gym scent in the air as soon as you walk in. You see everything coated in that fine layer of chalk. The box fan is running in the back. A million holds on the wall with no space left. The authentic vibe just hits and you realize you just stepped foot into a beastly gym. Great geometry, great training area, and great routesetting. One of the best gyms I've been to in years.

So I'm a very nervous and anxious person, and I'm not a fan of regular gyms or very physically active in the first place.

BUT The moment I walked in I felt good about this place. The manager on the bouldering side, Lupe, is super chill and very helpful. The gym on the other side is great for classes, and everyone seems like they know everyone else. Lots of different gym equipment, and it even incorporated walking outside for part of the class. Very fun.

The bouldering side offers a lot of different skill level climbs, but if you are looking for a harness, this place doesn't have one, but they do have very thick pads to fall on and they are very comfortable.

Very friendly environment, decent pricing for a local gym with different membership options. If you are tired of a regular gym experience, and want to work with people that actually seem like they care about helping people reach their goals, this might be worth a visit.

I would like to commend the management and Lupe at the front desk. My membership had been incorrectly activated when I went in for a day pass. The gym was able to verify I had not activated it and they acted with integrity by refunding me the incorrect charges. They made a mistake and looked into and rectified it, that says a lot about their standing in the climbing community.

This a smaller boulder gym with lots of fitness equipment. Almost like a duel purpose gym. Its like the bar where everybody knows your name. Lots of younger 20s people but they were nice to this old guy. Nice routes. Lots of easier routes v0-v3. I am not used to the heat and humidity in the area. I was pretty much sweat soaked in 30 minutes. Just don't go in hoping for modern air - conditioned large scale builder gym in mind. Go in with the.. Close knit family vibe and you'll find it.

This gym looks like lots of fun but unfortunately my little sister is only 16 so we were unable to climb. I could not find anywhere on their website of this 18 and up policy. Could someone point me that section on your website?
Staff and other members were very friendly though. They helped me look for another location to climb at that is kid friendly so that was nice. But $25 per person and 30 mins away was way too steep since we were located only 5 mins away from gym... guess we will come back in 2 years.

There are many reasons why I'm starting to like this gym, the first one is they don't make you wear a mask which is exactly why I quit the other Climbing gym, we will leave that gym's name out. The second reason I like this gym is because their routes seem to be a bit more challenging than the other climbing gyms and the last reason is because the staff and Community there are very helpful, encouraging, and professional I have not experienced one bit of them being rude, condescending or stuck up so in closing although I was very unhappy to leave the gym I was going to previously I am slowly becoming a very happy and long-term number of the district. So thank you to the staff and the community for being so welcoming... Bill

Minus two stars for their lack of masking. Employees and majority of patrons do not to wear masks in the height of covid-19 (mid Jan 2021 during the spike of cases after winter holidays). Friday after 5pm is $5 drop in, a popular time, and not only is there lack of masking, but also not much room to maintain 6ft distance in the front area. It felt like a college party to be honest. I'm giving this review three stars because I support rock climbing, the workers are nice, and the $5 Friday is a great idea.

Here is a absolute honest opinion on my personal experience with the District gym:

1) THE STAFF:
Ive read all the reviews and noticed a review stating that the staff to be rude. Trust me when I say that I am one who absolutely cannot tolerate any form of arrogance. With that in mind, I can personally say that the staff are not only nice and inviting but also extremely helpful when it comes to truly wanting to learn climbing and improve technique. Everyone talks to everyone. Its amazing. It feels like a family. Something that is practically non existent these days. If you're a person who truly wants to learn and ping pong ideas on ways to improve your technique, you've gotta just talk to the staff. That's it!

2) THE GYM
This gym is for the serious! For those who are sincerely wanting to either get in shape, become a better climber, learn body weight training, etc.., you're gonna love love love this spot! I mean, It's not the prettiest, nor does it have the newest weight equipment like many of these gyms, but trust me trust me.., its got the necessities for getting in shape fast. I mean fast!

Please note: Fridays are packed but alot of fun and a cool way of meeting new people. Sundays, a group of 4 incedibly experienced climbers change a wall with new bouldering problems . Keeps things exciting for the following week to solve new boulder problems.

(note: On Sunday, there is still access to climbing other walls. The setters just work on a portion of the wall)

3) THE COST
Literally only $40 a month. 24 hr access. Showers, lockers, towels. Also, free beginner climbing classes 2 days a week. What else do you need. They offer shoe rentals too!

However, Id highly highly recommend going to REI and buy some climbing shoes. I mean, if you really want to get serious in climbing, you gotta invest on some shoes, chalk, and climbing balm. The rentals will get quite costly in the long run but if you're a beginner, renting shoes is okay.

4) OVERALL COMMUNITY
Overall the people ive met in this gym are amazing. It seriously feels like a family.

Ive had memberships at lifetime fitness 281, Spectrum at Rogers Ranch, and Anytime Fitness. There is just some weird magical vibe about this place. Not sure why..but there is..

CONCLUSION:

THIS IS MY SPOT!

Pros: great atmosphere, friendly/knowledgeable staff, 24/7 is a GAME CHANGER, plenty of equipment ranging activities (gymnastics, weights, CrossFit, finger/agility boards, aerial silks etc..), coordinated updates to walls, classes come with membership, shoes for rent if you don't have your own/communal chalk bag, generally not very many people/ people are accommodating when there is a crowd.

Cons: occasionally no parking on site (but plenty of other lots nearby), late night crowd likes to drink/smoke indoors

This is a neat little bouldering gym in San Antonio. I've climbed (indoors and out) around the US for the past 7 years, and I liked this place a lot. The problem ratings felt fair and consistent, the setting was decently creative, and everything was (mostly) clean and tidy. Sometimes climbing gyms struggle with that last one, so that was refreshing. The main reason for 4 stars is the size. Despite the quality, there was so little wall space that I quickly ran out of new things to try. The guy I talked to said that there were plans for expanding, which is good because that is what needs to happen. But if you are a decent climber and you are looking for somewhere chill to boulder for an evening, this place will do just fine.

I don't know how this gym compares to other bouldering gyms but in addition to the climbing walls, they have a free weight set up along with kettlebells, 75 lb. dumbbell set and medicine balls.

They reset a wall weekly so there are always fun new problems. Some problems are for taller people so that can be frustrating, but definitely doable for people on the shorter end. Just turn them into dynos or get freaky with it! 😁 The community is great and supportive with zero judgement for when you fall on your butt.

Disclaimer: only climb here

4 months of being a paid member and feel like there is a lot of value here, lots of features and additions are being made, opening more wall space, new wall in the works, routes that push you more than similar graded routes at a few of gyms that I have been to.

The staff is awesome and enthusiastic, patrons can be cliquey at times but talk to people, everyone is friendly and supportive. Once you start you will be addicted.

Great whites, yellows and pinks for beginners and novices. They do use tags for routes instead of monochromatic coding. Took a bit to get used to, but definitely recommend giving this place a try, college nights are Fridays after 5pm for 5 dollars.

Don't even waste your time. The District is more like a crossfit with a small bouldering wall. Amateur route setters, at best. None of their routes are challenging if you've climbed for more than a week. I was also surprised to learn that they're 18+ only. Tried to take my kiddo to climb and got treated like a moron. As a competitive climber, I've been to a whole lot of rock gyms. This is the first I've ever seen to not have a youth program, let alone a kid's wall. How are you expecting to build the climbing community again? Oh yeah, trendy hipsters standing around comparing the unused shoes they got at REI. Got it. No wonder the routes suck.

One of the largest rock climbing walls in the city. Now that they are building out their space they have a lot more to offer. Can't wait to see what they have planned.

I can only speak to the bouldering section of the gym; haven't tried other sections or classes at this point.

Pros:
1. The 24-hour access is an awesome feature; can't praise that highly enough. It'll be great to be able to climb before work, and early on weekends, before it gets too hot.
2. There are a lot of routes and different kinds of walls for a small space, and the way they indicate them (with different markings on different-colored tape) is creative and helpful.

Cons:
1. Some of the floor padding seems ideally set up to break ankles and/or legs...on the slab wall especially, it's easy to imagine slipping off (rather than falling outward, like you would on the overhung walls) and landing between the pad and the wall. This makes me not want to push myself on that wall, to avoid falling.
2. The largest issue I have, though, is the style of the routes...I'm not sure if they're all put up by one person, but they all seem to be fairly similar in that they are suited for dudes. Particularly, tall dudes. I can absolutely understand catering to the kind of member you have the most of (and presumably that's men), but there need to be at least a couple of routes that don't pretty much require the ability to do a pull up in order to finish. When I can climb V4 at several other gyms and can't top out on even V0 here, that seems to be an indication that the routes aren't allowing for different styles of climbing, and climbers with different strengths. If I just missed those routes, I'd love to know, but I certainly looked for them, and I didn't find any.

The bouldering wall is a little intimidating at first, but I have been greeted by friendly people who are willing to help, explain and guide you up the wall.

There is a lot more to do than just climb here, which is good, because their climbing space is small. Cool gym and nice people there though.

It is small but not bad to stop by if you are in town. $13 for a day pass is kind of expensive if you just are climbing.

They are building the bouldering area bigger but could use a system wall and a campus wall to really allow training.

The setting was pretty good though with interesting routes. They could tape better though as it all peels up. I like how the problems have a range based on the color. It doesn't lock you into a grade and you will try harder stuff (plus is the gym, who cares about the grade).

I am also super confused there isn't a big gym SA.

All that said if I am back in town I will be back in to get a good climb in with friendly locals who are very into climbing.

The district is like a playground for adults. It is a great social/active environment. There's always something to do: climbing, tumbling, parkour, aerial silks, straps, acro, crossfit, weightlifting... If you're looking for something new or just a way to spend an evening it's a great experience!

I was in San Antonio for just a few months and got a two month membership. They continue to charge me for months afterwards. I requested a refund of two months, which they agreed to. But it's nearly six months later and I still haven't seen a refund. They no longer answer my emails either.
