I’ve been coming here for 8 years. What the field house lacks in luster, it picks up in character. Amazing basketball court where dreams are made and broken. Good place to whoop on some local Galvestonians, or make a few med students regret their life decisions. Good mix of competition. Some unorthodox hoopers call this gym their home. Well maintained court, especially compared to the limited indoor options in the area.
I don’t know what I would have done without this place during my time in Galveston. Front staff is friendly and accommodating. Will be coming back.

The UTMB Alumni Field House Track is an open Track which I use for my daily workout. Environment, staff are friendly, they have many more options in the Field House which I would recommend. For more details please contact the UTMB Alumni Field Office at the address mentioned or contact them at the number provided.

Only gym really on the island and appeals to older alumni, not so much students. While equipment is sufficient, it is the hottest (temperature) gym I have ever been to. I understand in the summer it being 80Β° inside due to ac being expensive, but when it is 50-60Β° outside in the winter months and it is still unbearably hot inside, come on!! Open a door! Try working out with a mask (totally support) at 80Β° inside (do not support)! #1 reason why most students do not enjoy this gym.

Good gym.

Lots of UTMB students go here for their fitness needs.
The treadmills are truly amazing... You can watch netflix on the built in screen on the treadmill while you run... NO EXCUSES!!!
However, they only have 2 squat racks..... 2! Often times you will have to wait just to use one of the racks.... unacceptable. We need to get rid of some of the other useless gym equipment and install more squat racks.

PRO TIP: use your phone to take a picture of the bar code on your gym card and then you can just use your picture to scan into the gym.

In 1968, the graduates and friends of UTMB contributed funds to establish the Alumni Field House. For over 40 years the UTMB Alumni Field House has been a place for students, alumni, employees, retirees, and their families to unwind, get in shape, and have fun. Thanks to the generous support of the Moody Foundation and alumni funds, the Field House is a state-of-the-art fitness and wellness facility offering the latest in exercise equipment as well as opportunities for research, work/study programs, and internships. A recent renovation has increased the size of the facility to more than 49,000 square feet.

Through payment of the student service fee, each student has a membership at the UTMB Alumni Field House. Students may obtain a family membership for their immediate family members (spouse and children under twenty-five years of age) living in the same household for a yearly fee of $225. Lockers are also available for an additional fee.

UTMB's field house is great!! There are 5 split rooms of workout equipment including machines and free-weights. The area for treadmills/cardio is unique, although it's narrow you face the window which overlooks the pool and behind that the track.
If you don't want to look out there is another row of treadmills that lookout onto the gym itself. The basketball court is always clean and it has a 2-lane track around it. Although it's short, it can be better than running outside or on the treadmill. I like that they have 2 rooms that you can use for stretching, doing a workout video or practicing your form.
There are also lockers but the ones without locks seem to always be full but I just bring my stuff for the day. I like that they have showers with a bench and mounted wall hair dryers.
Great place to workout!

Great facilities. Plenty of machines and always free options. New basketball court. The swimming pool is heated on winter and chilled in summer! Parking can be challenging at times, which deepens on the time you visit.

Equipment is ok, don't expect anything fancy but is probably the newest around the area. Staff is ok friendly. Cleanliness is ok in the workout area but the men's locker carpet (don't know about the women's) could have been thrown away a couple of decades ago, it stinks no mater if you are the first one in the morning. Thats avoidable though, just change in the shower area, they have plenty of benches.

The reason why I'm rating it 1-star is because I've been reporting a water leak for weeks in the men's shower and nothing has happened. The City of Galveston would only deal with leaks upstream the meter. The maintenance staff told me it would be taken care of. Days later I reported it to the front desk and was told the same. Because this is a stream rather than an occasional drop, I wrote to the manager, whom answered: "All the shower heads and valves are scheduled to be completely removed and replaced [...] sometime in August; in the mean time I will see if maintenance can stop or reduce the leak." If she had that leak at her home I guarantee she wouldn't "will see if", instead she would have called any plumber in the island and have it addressed immediately, not relying on a two months replacement schedule. Some days later I asked the front desk about the issue, "nothing will be done and here is a towel for your crying" he said while handing me a towel for my crying... So why it bothers me? other than the obvious ignoring of wasting a limited resource in a so called 1st world country, here are three reasons:
1) It's my money. I don't like seeing my monthly fees going down the drain. When fees go up they'll never say its "due to our poor management".
2) Message consistency. UTMB preaches left and right about research for taking care of the environment, what about grabbing a very low hanging fruit and address what is seen by anyone -no education / research needed-.
3) Over the last 19 years of traveling overseas I've been defending Americans when they are called the "dirty-fat kid in the block throwing away everyone’s resources in the planetβ€œ. My response is that not all are like that and stereotyping any country or group -just like immigrants- is totally inaccurate. Today, it feels like swimming upstream to remove that stereotype even inside the country.

Update after first month of reporting:
Response from manager after requesting an update β€œNOTHING can be done until all shower valves and heads are replaced. [...] This will be done in August/September.” One month more to the schedule.
It is estimated that a regular drip leak wastes 5 gal per day, this stream is more than triple a drip, but say double; 10 gal / day. According to the WHO a regular person needs 2 gal a day for normal use, 5 persons water usage are down to the drain everyday because of poor management.

Updates to come...

Decent gym, has everything you need. Recently updated interior with new equipment which is great. However, equipment could be maintained better, apparent that it is not cleaned enough. Some ceiling fans seem to be purely decor as they do not work, or just spin and do nothing or create a whirl wind. Peak times can be crowded. Haven't used pool, they are still finishing renovation and are currently renovating the basketball court.

From what I experienced my first visit, this gym is in great condition. The gym equipment is clean and their pool is kept up well! This field house is private to only employees and their families. They follow this rule strickley. I rate this place 4 out of 5 because the customer service there is not up to par.

Lots of equipment and they just set up new equipment throughout the gym. Even though it can be busy it is still easy to workout.
