Coming up on finishing our first month there, and I've already made some pretty big strides in terms of flexibility. To be clear - I'm attending not so much for self-defense (although that is taught), but because I wanted to get into a sport that I could do with my family, to learn things I could use for mental resilience (three deployments led to a medical retirement), and to ward off the typical retiree gut. This school accomplishes all of the above.

My 13 year old daughter and I have been learning our Kata, and when she's at her other house, I practice alone while the baby naps for a time of mediation and it has already helped me maintain my focus on the other daily chores I have to do.

One thing I have found that seems unique to Sensei Ken - I have an 8-year-old AuDHD son. This means headphones when he's out in public, noise sensitivity, constantly repeating things he's said, and impulse control problems. I've taken the kids to try out kickboxing, some of the larger TKD schools in the area, etc., and none of them got him to Focus. In fact, he had a major problem with just running off the mats, not listening to instructors, and just not zeroing in, plus he had a tendency to conflate minor discomfort (e.g. doing stretches) with actual pain (which he may have felt, it's impossible to know what's happening in someone else's point of view, even if it's your own kid). I don't know if it's his voice, his overall positive demeanor, or what, but this kid actually accepts his critiques, listens to what he's told, and though he'll still interrupt on occasion, it is less than I've ever seen before, and that's AFTER his meds for the day have worn off!

I even walked up to him this morning, took one of wrists in my hand, and he executed his, "pull-it, pop-it, run away," as if on instinct!

I know Karate isn't necessarily viewed the way it was in the 80's and 90's thanks to the popularity of UFC and other combat sports, but I cannot emphasize enough just how much difference this has made in my family dynamic in such a short time.

For those who want to try a different tack, I do know the school offers boxing, self-defense, and I'm pretty sure there was a women's fitness course going on on one of the days I went.

As for the BLUF, as of this review (and I'm sure it can change in the future, after all, inflation is a thing) I pay about $200/month for me and 2 of my kids (we'll be adding kid number 3 when he turns 3). If you want firm, but fair instruction, more focus, and even a bit of sweat equity in your life, come to this school. I cannot recommend it highly enough!

Ken Johnson, the owner/ operator and head Sensei is experienced in several different defensive art forms and very patient and instructional. His support staff is willing to help when needed and I have enjoyed and gained from each of the sessions I have attended.
I would recommend this dojo to any and all experience levels.

World Class Karate Fitness truly lives up to its name. Sensei Ken Johnson is patient, encouraging, and a world-class role model— not just for the kids, but for the whole family. He’s created a welcoming, judgment-free space that’s had a huge impact on our confidence, wellness, and mindset.

Senpai Kita Johnson, leads the women’s fitness and women's self defense classes with the same commitment. She’s incredibly mindful of each of the women’s goals and goes the extra mile to ensure the women have an accountability partner— at all times and even beyond class. With amazing instructors and a supportive parent community, this place is more than a dojo—it’s a second home.
