Played the Hornet course at Aeropines Golf Club on today. Staff was super friendly, professional and quickly got me and my buddy checked in. Loved the layout of the course....and, the course was in good condition...lots of great work is occurring by the course Pro, superintendent, and crew...greens, fairways, and green side bunkers were in great shape. The rough was manageable...appears its been lowered, I didn't have any issues finding my and or my buddy's ball fairly quickly. There are challenges the course is trying to overcome with some broken sprinklers...so you will see some overgrowth and an area roped off on hole 13 to avoid...unfortunately I hit into it but was able to retrieve my ball and took free relief outside the area.
Additionally, after month of construction by Dominion Energy, hole 15 is back as a par 4, 16 is now a par 3 and hole 18 has been returned to a par 5. Highly recommend playing Aeropines...is there room for improvement..."yes"...but overall I found the course in good shape, enjoyable and a great test of my golf game.

Course is not open to the public, you must have military base access.

Out of the three courses we play aeropines, eagle haven, sewells point, Aeropines is the worst maintained. How about fire the course manager and tell the base commander to do something. Hornet has a nice setup but heck how about cut the grass and put new sand in the bunker coz it’s basically mud. Frustrating to play there sometimes. Sewells point is the best maintained go play there.

Greens and fairway are decent, but rough is way too overgrown. Pace of play was very slow. Halfway house wasn’t open so at least the water jugs along the way should be filled, which they weren’t. For a $50 base course it’s okay, but I’d recommend just going over to Red Wing.

The staff were very pleasant. The club house was nice inside but the decks/porches were in disrepair. We took time to give the food a shot after our round. The breakfast was good and price nicely. We only played 9 and at $50.00 for two, with a cart was a good deal, for a weekday. The course….Meh. Greens were 3.5 out of 5. Lots were burnt. Fairways were long and in need of cutting. When they were cut last, clumps of grass were left all over the fairways. I’m no pro by any stretch of the imagination, but it was a frustrating round, from the course aspect. Several lost balls, on the fairways.
We may give it another try, next time we’re in Oceana. I heard that improvements were in the works.

Visiting Virginia Beach during the Christmas holidays and decided to play golf because the weather warned up to.(45*), I found the course in good winter condition. The greens and fairways are in a dormant state but smooth. The greens were very fast and challenging. The fairways were in good condition and challenging. The fairway bunkers added to the challenge. I read about players' complaints concerning bunkers. My answer to that is, " Don't hit it in the bunker!" A couple of tee boxes didn't have grass but were still playable. The proshop has all your golfing needs. The restaurant is very elegant. I played the Tomcat Course for$41, but they also have a winter special for $30 with a cart. I enjoyed it and hope you do as well 😊
I recommend, Enjoy;))

Played 3 Nov 2023. There was a frost delay as the temps were in the low 30s when we arrived; the staff were very friendly and we weren't in a huge hurry. Breakfasts looked good, but I only needed a coffee (it was ok). We played the Tomcat course--it is one tight track! You definitely need to be dialed in off the tee boxes! My biggest gripe is that we're retired military guys and paying $41 for 18 and a cart...the course was mostly ok, but barely that. Most (maybe all??) the sand traps and bunkers were in terrible shape. The greens weren't great, maybe barely passable. I was just a bit disappointed that it seemed we were paying (almost!) premium prices and the course wasn't quite living up to expectations. We enjoyed it, regardless.

Great greens, practice areas and club house.
Carts were old and banged up. Many sand bunkers were unplayable due lack of sand and grass intrusion.
No course layout on scorecard or at tee boxes make it more difficult if you haven’t played there before.
Priced right and staff is friendly.

This squirrel 🐿️ feels it's seen so many better days. Visiting from out of town, stuck at the gateway inn and wanted a simple place for dinner, πŸ˜” well not here, food service stopped at 3 pm.
Bathroom are a mess, the furniture is old. Sad 😒 part is the place has good bones, some real TLC could make it a fun place, but as with ALL MWR places are just running down and the young would rather sit in their room than be active. No photos, what's the point the manager knows how the bathroom looks, what time they close, sees the dirt on the bathroom overhead window and knows what needs to be painted and what needs to be replaced. Worst part is they don't have money because no one really uses the dining area. The pro. Shop was better.

Stopped for lunch with a coworker. Got there before the afternoon rush. Kitchen staff is very nice. Payment system was very slow. Ordered chili dogs with fries. Both were very good. Very nice lunch environment. They also have an app that let's you order ahead. Enjoyed my lunch.

Don't let the boomers scare you off; this place is great. Yes, the carts have seen better days. No, the bunkers don't have the softest sand. But this place (the Hornet Course in particular) is my go to course for a couple reasons. It's wide and spread out with vast views of rural VB's trees and fields. The greens fees are good and the food prices are even better. Most importantly, this is the least populated course I've been to in the area. I'm new to golf and most of my shots are dogsh*t but I've never once felt rushed here. I don't need a tee time 90% of the time and I've never been paired up with another group. I always feel like I can take my time and enjoy the scenery. Cherry on top: you often get a free airshow!

18 holes for 2 people at 8:40am cost us $82. My jaw dropped. For how overgrown everything is, the janky carts they give you and the HORRIBLE cart paths….. definitely not worth it. They’re robbing people.

Played at Hornet yesterday and used the cart. They collect $17 for the cart and yet most of them have torn seats. They did not get their carts ready for use, for all were dirty, wet and moldy.

The only reason they got 1 star is because there were at least flag sticks in every hole. No water coolers anywhere on Hornet course. No ability to get food/drinks once you start. (No mention of this from the staff). The bunkers (fairway and green side) were awful.

Rude cashier or whomever was at the front for the restaurant. There are other ways to address customers when you have 15 min left before you close. I understand, you want to go home and we had no knowledge you were closing. But telling us " hey, we're closing in 15 min so hurry up and order" is not the right way to approach someone.

Today the experience was mediocre. I ordered the special which showed as a Buffalo chicken wrap. I got a green wrap with chicken in it but didn't have time to address it so I ate it. It was okay but had a few bones in it. It's close and we don't have to leave the base. We'll certainly go back but I'll make sure I get what I ask for next time.

The clubhouse was nice..The Tomcat course was so so. The greens need serious attention and even though you should do your best to avoid sand traps I don't think you can call them sand traps...dead grass sticking up and literally no sand in there at all. The traps look more like concrete, and the cart paths will cause your back pain from all of the pot holes and so on..Serious attention is needed IMO.

Tomcat course in horrible shape. Marshall hurried us even though we were on pace and finished a little over 4 hours. They had alot of pairs and 3 some behind us and apparently it was our fault people were jammed up. Took forever to find a ball in the weeds a yard or two off the fairway. Bunkers full of weeds and no sand at all, just mud. Needs alot of work to get up to pace with hornet course.

Came in on a Sunday morning. The guy at the counter was one of the rudest people I’ve ever encountered. No customer service, didn’t give the $37 per person price to play a military course. His response when I said good morning, was β€œjust put your card in!” -uh I’m sorry? Wow. Last time I will ever be here. The cart path is less than okay. 4-wheeling in a golf cart. And the course is in rough shape. The rough is super tall. Patchy fairways. Nope- I’m good.

Stopped to hit some balls at the range, Changed my mind and played 9 on the Tomcat course, The ruff was tough, found 4 balls in 9 holes in the ruff, sand traps not the best, but the fairway was nice, and the greens were great! If you like them fast.

Two courses to choose from. Both are good, but most prefer the Hornet course. I like the Tomcat for 9 holes, because the 9th comes back around to the clubhouse. The Hornet course 9th is as far away from the clubhouse as any hole on either course. Definitely only play 18 if you're playing the Hornet course. The greens roll a little slower than most, but they're also firm and rarely receive ball marks.

Great staff, great prices and food! I played tomcat today. The course layout is challenging indeed for being such a short course but play is made even more challenging by how badly the course is maintained. The greens were rock hard and would not stop a ball and none of my putts broke. Speeds were inconsistant with some being lightening fast and others like i was trying to putt on shag carpet. There is a major weed infestation on many of the greens that will send your ball wildly off course. My partner said it looked like the greens had herpes. The sand traps were pretty rough and many lacked rakes. The yardage markers had grass growing pretty tall around them and were impossible to see unless you were standing on top of it. The fairways on the back nine were in much better shape than the front. I honestly feel that having two 18 hole courses is too much area to maintain. I would rather golf Sewells Point or Eagle Haven as fsr as MWR golf courses.
Also, there needs to be more than one starter for two courses. I was in a threesome walking with noone in front of us. Behind us was two seperate twosomes riding that could have been put together.
The course just needs more funding, the layout and the club house/ proshack are great, the money into the course is lacking
