Had a 3 day trial membership at this facility. While I was in the men's locker room with my son we had a woman come in plop down right next my son while he was changing. Will not be getting a membership to this company while they cater to this nonsense of allowing men and women in locker rooms of the opposite sea. Absolutely ridiculous!!!

I was a member here with my mother, who has a disability and needed exercise for therapy, and we both had a very negative experience. From the very first day we joined and for 3 years nonstop, an employee named Connie (evening janitor) harassed us. This was not an isolated issue. it was ongoing and escalated over time. She sprayed Lysol toward me at the sinks, followed me around the locker room, and mopped directly over my feet and even over my mother’s feet after she came out of the shower (which could have caused her to slip and get hurt because of her disability). On another day, Connie even turned off the pool lights while my family (including a baby and pregnant women) were still swimming, without any announcement. Her behavior was hostile, unsafe, and completely unprofessional.

We complained many times during those years, but management ignored us and nothing was done. When I finally left over a year ago, all I received was a generic “sorry to see you go” message. no acknowledgment of the harassment, no accountability, and no corrective action.

At the VCC location, a staff member with a nose ring caused a scene, chased me down yelling, and when my husband said, “We pay too much money to be treated this way,” she responded that if we couldn’t afford it, we should go somewhere else. That level of disrespect is shocking and unacceptable.

Overall, this gym failed to protect its members. including those with disabilities. ignored repeated complaints, and allowed staff to behave in a hostile and dangerous way for years. If you are considering joining, be aware that member concerns are not taken seriously and management does not hold staff accountable.

There is no corporate support. If you have a question or concerns. Dont bother calling corporate. Corporate doesn't answers calls. Even the operator says leave a message. Its a total joke. The customer service tech kept repeating the same thing. When iasked for additional help she hung up on me.

I recently canceled my membership at American Family Fitness due to a very disappointing experience with a front desk staff member named Isac. I was granted free pool access for my daughter by Manager Mason, who confirmed that it was added to my account. However, when I arrived, Isac refused to allow us in and declined to contact Mason to verify.

After I managed to get in touch with Mason myself, he called Isac, who then reluctantly let us through. When I explained that I wasn’t lying about the access, Isac responded with, “Why would I trust you?” — a rude and completely unprofessional remark.

This kind of behavior is unacceptable, especially toward a paying member. I no longer feel comfortable supporting a facility where customers can be treated with such disrespect.

I hope management addresses this issue seriously so other members don’t have to go through something similar.

I’ve been going here for about 5 years and am just as impressed now as I was when I started. the cleanliness, large and open spaces and locker rooms, great amenities, and staff make it easy to stay motivated and actually want to go to the gym. I go to a few of the other locations in the area (Mechanicsville is awesome too) but IMO, I’ve never been to a better gym and am thankful Am Fam is a part of RVA.

Melissa is an amazing instructor/ class manager. Everytime I show up for her class she is always motivating. Which is amazing 2 me because we all know how life is. She's always amazing at describing every step and detail within your body.
She's amazing at accepting everyone has different bodies and pushes u without making it feel like it's military or make u feel bad. Since I'm over that from the marine corps.

I take her cycle class 2x a week, Blast (cardio) class 2x a week, hot vinyasa yoga, hot vinyin yoga, hot power yoga, and power(weight class)

She's a big reason why my body has shaped so well and I'm thankful for her! My motivation is to have her physique

The classes are free and an hour long. Worth taking!

Out of all the locations, this one is my favorite. It has a single floor with a clear line of sight, which allows our family to engage in our own activities without feeling disconnected from one another. Additionally, several front desk staff members are welcoming to everyone who comes through the door. I recommend this location to anyone who asks, as people of all shapes, sizes, and fitness levels, including those with disabilities and children, feel comfortable working out here.

I really do love this gym. The locker room is always clean and feels modern. I’m loving the new cardio equipment, and ready to see some new stair-masters, and Elliptical machines as the ones there are beat down, squeak very loudly, fans don’t work, outdated, etc. The weight room however could also use some more cleanliness, the floor is always so dirty, some machines lack the grip handles, other machines lack proper padding as well. The instructors here for group exercises are phenomenal, and i enjoy going to their sessions. I do however wish, that there were more times available early morning for the high intensity cardio and strength classes, such as POWER or total body burn. Some of these little tweaks could really make this gym so much better. Sometimes i do however ask myself why i am paying so much when competitors offer memberships for much less 😬. Guess i will wait a few more months to see why!

Signs everywhere say, “we aren’t responsible for lost or stolen items.” It’s clear theft is an ongoing problem. How are we (the consumer) supposed to feel more comfortable or enticed to spend $100+ a month for a family plan to watch the front desk attendants literally wave people by without an id or barcode, without being vetted and without concern for safety or protocol. I’ve heard multiple stories of wallets being stolen or cars being rummaged through while people are inside. Then it happened to me. No one could say anything about it, no one had a form to fill out in case it was found, management couldn’t have been bothered. I can honestly say, we are paying such close attention to this location and their conduct. I don’t recommend American family fitness as a whole, I wish it was just one bad egg but this seems to be much bigger. If management does see this, I highly recommend you start paying attention to who is being let through without ID and who is allowing people to come in without membership.

My husband and I joined this gym over a year ago and were very excited at first. Unfortunately, we've been quite disappointed with management, customer service, and equipment. When we first joined, the general manager said that they were in the process of removing some of the cardio equipment (which is dated and in excess) and adding a green turf area with more equipment such as the one in the personal training room (which is rarely used and ONLY reserved for personal training). It does not appear that this process has begun over a year later. For such a big gym there are many pieces of equipment that are missing such as a decent hip thrust machine and a decline chest press machine. There is no good area for ab or core workouts and the mats are dirty and difficult to clean. There are many machines with worn out pads or grips. We have provided written feedback a few times and it was never acknowledged or acted upon. Some of the front desk members have absolutely no customer service skills and can't even greet you appropriately. Not sure why they are even there as you could probably scan for entry on your own. For the price they charge there is a lot to be desired and improved.

They have a couple of popular exercise bikes that break down frequently... and that would be ok, except it takes WEEKS for them to get repaired. There's an extra charge that they hit you with once a year for maintenance, and it seems to me that it would be simple matter to replace a belt. And if it takes a while to receive those replacement belts, maybe buy some spares?

EDIT: The AmFam response kinda missed my point... 'poking my head in with the manager' has been done maybe 3x over the last couple years and the answers have been apathetic, NOT energetic. The owner - not the response person for these reviews - needs to address this, not rely on a complacent manager who closes her door... a lot. Leaving the review at 3 stars because of the solid facility, however, to one of my other points, one of the machines has been down for ~3 weeks. Maybe time to buy replacement equipment when parts are not readily available?

Pros: expansive gym with really good features - gym, pool, nice locker rooms, lots of equipment means little wait time, clean.

Cons: LONG equipment repair times (sometimes weeks!), unresponsive management to issues (eg, the app, website and signage consistently being out of sync, not managing the gym times consistently, poor follow through to inquiries/complaints) - they really need to come out of their offices more and see how the gym is actually functioning. Ask your customers.

Summary: still a good gym, but seemingly no longer on a quest to be one of Richmond's Best.

I joined American Family in March 2024 the facility is nice but that is all I have to say is good about it. Don’t even bother to try and talk to anyone if you have a billing issue. The billing department is very rude and a joke. Phyllis is the most unpleasant person that I have ever talked to and she changes documents. Don’t even try to talk to Melissa in billing because she won’t call you back. I did call the Va Center location for help. I talked to a nice man who listened to my complaint but said that he could not do anything. I feel like he had someone in the room telling him what to say because he kept pausing in the middle of his sentences. All I can say is don’t join American Family unless you have money to throw away because if you have a billing issue they just ignore it, blame it on you, and take your money anyway!!!!

They have one of the largest selections of classes and equipment and an indoor pool. The price is good for what you get. However the interiors need a serious makeover. At a minimum the carpet should be replaced.

Janitorial services need a serious overhaul. The locker rooms are dirty and the inside of the lockers need to be wiped down. Several plumbing fixtures are broken.

Since last time the locker rooms have gotten worse. Inside of the lockers need to be cleaned and wiped down. It's getting pretty bad.

Clean, usually not too busy, lots of equipment and different spaces, and the staff are absolutely awesome. I have zero complaints.

My only thing is I don't know if I'm allowed to be in those side rooms they have when classes aren't in session? I know other gyms let you, but I've been too afraid to ask if I can privately use the weights in there or something.

The gym is decent. The most negative thing is that they advertise that you can cancel your membership at anytime with a 30 day notice. However, what I can not remember them telling is that you have to submit a "request" to cancel which can take 7-10 business days BEFORE the 30 days start. Therefore, giving them a good chance of collecting another month's payment. Why do you have to "REQUEST" a cancellation when you're allowed to cancel any time? We cancelled early June, BEFORE June's payment came out. Therefore, June SHOULD have been the last month's payment for the membership. However, they waiting until RIGHT AFTER they took June's payment to "accept" the cancellation. so now I'm paying ANOTHER month for a service not needed?????? For a gym this size, this is a really grimey thing to do to people in order to scheme them out of money for services no longer needed.

I went to this gym with one of my friends who is a guest and had to sign in. No problem with that, I understand. We had our workout and decided to go swimming. My friend didn’t feel comfortable going into the mens bathroom and decided to use the family restroom to do a quick change. Once they got out, we were swimming for about 20 minutes or so when a guy from the gym came into tue pool area just to SCREAM at my friend. He was saying “never again” over and over and started saying “I know your a transgender” “I don’t care” etc etc. nobody did anything and there were no lifeguards. It was ridiculous. The staff were friendly and said they would do something about it, but I don’t know if I can return without knowing this person is gone.

I absolutely love my gym. I embrace everyone part of it. I love the amazing staff and people who greet you everyday, especially Brad who always is so helpful. The coaches are amazing and fusion has really changed my life. I have lost 82 pounds and all it took was a year by doing fusion, strength and resistance training and making healthier choices. Holly, Shannon, Alyssa, Nick and Matt are awesome coaches and trainers. They truly care about getting you to where you want to be. The cleaning staff is amazing and the daycare is the best place to leave your child, Dawn is truly wonderful at coordinating her staff and they are great with kids. I miss the cafe when Olivia was there. The equipment is a great variety and always clean. There are amazing people working out also, a great family overall.

We joined American Family Fitness in 1989, within a few weeks of moving to Richmond. We lived near the first North Side location and our two daughters went with me often and enjoyed playing with Shirley in the children’s space. Jude Harris was one of my first aerobics instructors (high impact back then!!) and we had a blast! I have always enjoyed the fellowship at AmFam and am so glad that we belong! Even when we lived out of the country for many years we would return to Richmond and join temporarily while we were here, by the courtesy of those making the decisions regarding exceptions! We have been back in the states now for 12 years and AmFam is still the place for us. I am so blessed by the fellowship of the staff, the instructors and the members and would not workout anywhere else! Great job “y’all” as we’ve learned to say in this region of the USA. I still love Amfam. They are no where near as busy due to public fear of public places so it makes it nice to workout with less people. Each station or workout equipment has cleaning materials for folks to use and disinfect whatever is on the surface, which should be a normal practice anyway out of courtesy and not just b/c of the virus scare. I am not just speaking about this location but in all this company has not been understanding at all during covid only give you two mo of freeze and that's it. Knowing the gym is high risk area. I wouldn't go and asked in August before September started about refreezing account been a member for years. I asked to speak to supervisor in August and no on called then in September no one called finally in October I saw I wasn't important enough to get a call so I canceled. And they are now making me pay September even when I didn't step foot in the gym stating I did t give a 30 day notice and I stated I called over 6 time to speak to supervisor to see what my options were. It covid times people are dying and you are worried about getting money out of me because I couldn't come to gym. Crazy shows true colors during these times. You don't care for your customers. But other members casually met up face to face, many did not wear a mask, and few did not sanitize equipment after themselves. I have been a member a little under 2 years. VCC location is always clean with friendly staff. Equipment is not close together therefore you can use full range with all machines to make the most of your workout. Classes and gym are never too crowded.

I LOVE AmFam! They’re family to me because that’s how I feel when I go there. I’ve done personal training with Nick Myers and he is fabulous! Chris is great, too. They push you, but they won’t hurt you....... too much. There is so much machinery and the pool, hot tub and sauna just add to the workout. The hot yoga studio is amazing and they have so many pop up things going on it’s fantastic. I love my AmFam!!!!!

I am a new member and so far I have only done the hot yin classes. Everyone is so friendly and I always feel so much better after I practice. The women’s locker room is always so clean. The front desk staff are so friendly too... I always live walking in the front door.

The late hours of operation is always a plus in case it isn't possible to attend the gym at regular hours for whatever reason. Also, the variety of classes, pool, and equipment is adequate enough to accommodate members even during the busiest of hours.

The staff is always enthusiastic and helpful! The gym is always updating equipment and fixing broken equipment in a timely manner. They have an abundance of classes and a wide variety of machinery that can fit everyones workout style! Love this gym!!

I’ve been a member for 28 years and have rehabbed two knees and one shoulder, all full replacements. Facility has strength and cardio equipment for all ages and fitness levels. Personal training, swim instruction, and diet and nutrition services are available, plus exceptional health bar. Exercise, aquatic and locker areas are exceptionally clean and ample. Staff are friendly and helpful. I cannot think of anything to improve.

Wow! I truly enjoyed my Yoga Master Hal. I have traveled many places and met many people but Hal is the type of instructor that you wish you could hire permanently on your payroll as a personal trainer forever. As we approach a significant event in history with our first landing on the moon it’s also important to note the other piece of history. I don’t want to write a book but as a drop in from CH were I have been a member for 2 decades I have watched a young man who I admire dearly teach. He is great and strong, but he never leaves his throne. Likewise, his followers in the last 2 decades probably have gained all the weight I’ve lost. My point is I had an amazing time and If I had the capital I would grab Hal because he has a gift!
