Great local gym. Setters make good use of the relatively limited wall space, and problems get updated on a great cadence: always feels like thereβs something new to work but your problems donβt get taken down too fast.
Bouldering problems are probably a grade or two soft. Top-rope routes are easily 3+ grades soft. No big deal.
Crimpers staff are great! As others have said they clearly care about climbing and the gym.

This gym is where my kids first discovered rock climbing, and it changed their lives. What started as a fun new activity quickly became a lifelong passion. Climbing has shaped who they are, and so much of that is thanks to John and Danielle. The confidence, resilience, and sense of community theyβve gained here go far beyond the walls of the gym. Iβm deeply grateful for the role this placeβand these incredible mentorsβhave played in their growth.

Sucks to write this because I've otherwise had good experiences here. Got charged the full price of a month because I was a day late to freeze it (the fact that the "month" ticked over on the 10th and that you have to freeze in month intervals were never made clear to me). This was ultimately my fault and I get that, but it was disappointing that there was no attempt to remedy anything, just a "oh you can't do it". To be clear, the person at the desk did try to be helpful, but were given a hard no when they asked. The gym itself is fine and I've had good experience with most of the staff, but it just feels grimy that I essentially paid $70 for a day pass and management decided to just pocket it.

They charged me 5 separate times for a day pass. When I went back to hopefully get a refund they told me they didnβt, even when I showed my bank statement of the charges. They replied βgood luck with thatβ after getting the receipt from the one real charge. They also ask for your drivers license id number for the waiver which I havenβt experienced at other gyms and thought it was strange.

This is a very good climbing gym. It has quite a lot in it despite the small space. New routes are set on a weekly basis, and everything is kept clean. They use colored tape to set the bouldering problems. This takes some getting used to, but it really is an efficient way to use the space. The bouldering problems can be challenging, but there are many easier top roping problems to try if you are a beginner. I have been to many climbing gyms around the US and abroad and I would say that Crimpers is above average.

Great experience for both me and my 7 y/o son. The gym was not crowded (on a Saturday no less). We got through the orientations and on thr walls quickly. Gear for rent is high quality, staff were friendly, we will definitely be going back.

Payed to climb. Then 30 mins worth of lecture and legal forms to sign just to have a guy with a cast on his arm fail me on the belay test for top rope. Iβm a Nationally certified rope rescue technician. What a joke. Only stayed about 20 min after that and left.

Great gym for climbing. My only reason for not giving them a 5 is that the front desk staff is that the check in process takes forever - even if you have been there before, you have to go through every single safety lesson again.

This seems to be a really great bouldering gym, but from the top rope and lead climbing perspective itβs not super exciting. 5 auto belays and a wall of top ropes, then one small section of lead climbing. Very little variation in the angle of the walls and not super high. The routes overall felt very βtall;β Iβm 5β 3β and really struggled to reach a lot of the holds, even on 5.8 and 9 routes. The route setting style was very boulder-y (to be expected for a bouldering gym!) with lots of power moves and minimal holds. Some of the 10 felt like they were just hard because there were minimal/really spaced out holds but were not actually that technical in the moves needed. I was visiting from out of town and wanted to get some climbing in with a friend, so it was ok for the day! Just know that if youβre going for sport climbing that that is definitely a secondary focus here. Itβs also important to call ahead if it is your first time and you want to take your top rope or lead certification test, because they might not always have the staff available and in that case, you would just be limited to the auto belays and bouldering.

This is a great little gem of a climbing gym in the New River Valley area. It's come a long way in the years it's been open and now has a dedicated Kilter board, campus board, lifting and weight room, and even some top rope (with autobelays) and lead. The main attraction is bouldering and it delivers everything from the steeps to some delicate slab. While the walls are not the best, lighting near the wall is a little ark and when it gets cold the whole gym tends to get cold I can't ask for a whole lot more. Extremely friendly staff, clean bathrooms, some gear to buy. While it's not as opulent as the large mega gyms I love the atmosphere, great routesetting and friendly staff. If you're in the area and a climber it's a requisite stop.

First time at this gym. Iβm a noob climber so I went with my brother. Yeah hey have a normal weightlifting gym, a decent rock wall and two other types of climbing walls that they have equipment for. I went when they opened so there was only 2 other people there(which was nice). My brother says at prime time, itβs not much fun because you have to wait for awhile to make a climb because there are so many people. They donβt have AC so it can get pretty hot in there and if you donβt like that βgymβ smell then this place isnβt for you. They keep it cleaner than most climbing gyms but they all seems to have that musty feel if you know what I mean. Staff isβ¦.different but nice and friendly. Plenty of parking as well.

Not a good gym for beginners. I was passing through the area and got a day pass. The routes are not set by hold color but instead with colored tape, where an orange route can be right next to an orange-with-moon-decorations route, making it very difficult to spot the next hold while on the wall. I consider myself an intermediate climber and can usually climb for a couple hours; even though I tried to plan out the whole route before starting I ended up spending so much time looking for the next hand/foot hold that I lost my grip strength after my first few climbs. The weight room was pretty good, with a few barbells; the hangboard area was under construction. I talked to some regulars and they were very friendly, they said it took them a while to get used to the tape system as well. Seems like a good place if you're an advanced climber in the area. I didn't try to top rope, they have some auto-belays but their top rope walls are only a few feet taller than their bouldering wall (which I believe was 16 feet). The pad under the traversal wall was thinner than a crash pad, I heard some stories of people getting hurt on it so I stayed away.

I've come here every now and then when I visit my girlfriend and can honestly say I've never had a good experience with the staff, the policies here are a bit strange and some are very clearly meant to grab your money. I had brought a harness in to do autobelays and the staff told me I couldn't let my friends use it because it was "dangerous"... I've climbed for over 6 years, and worked at a few climbing gyms, not once have I ever heard of this "danger" so I asked them and they claim by taking the harness off and on it creates a danger, they didn't elaborate on how that posed any threat so it was clear this isn't about safety (ask pretty much any climber and I doubt they'll be able to say how it would be dangerous).
Besides the staff who seem kind of rude (some seem nice but none approachable in my friends and i's opinion in the multiple times we've gone) the routes are set harder than outdoors in my opinion, at least compared to new river gorge and the tape is so convoluted and messy it's a pain to read routes.
I gave you all a second star because despite my issues with all these things I do enjoy that the style is extremely different than anything I've seen and the training board/room is nice.
I'd love to raise the star level some day once I feel that staff are friendlier and the policies at least have a valid argument for safety or are honest.

I am a long time member of the climbing community who is visiting VA for the first time to see some family. During my stay, I wanted to get out for a brief climb at some local boulders and figured Crimperβs might allow a non member crash pad rental if I asked to pay extra / leave a license / pass on the good karma. HARD NO from the front desk girl. Really, climbing community?! Not impressed. I asked to speak with a manager and the worker said βtheyβre all pretty busy setting up for an event.β Again, whereβs the climbing community karma? Non existent, clearly.

This place is truly a diamond in the rough. It's a very well run old-school style climbing gym that remains competitive in the era of massive commercial facilities. The layout is great for serious training and recreational climbing for a wide range of abilities, the setting is outstanding, and the owners have cultivated a wonderful space for the local climbing community. My daughter and I visited here from out of town for a climbing competition and were thoroughly impressed. Both her Youth and my Citizens competitions were very well run. They even screened a climbing movie at the end of the competition, free of charge...and so that people didn't have to run out for dinner between the end of the comp and the beginning of the movie, they ordered pizza for everyone, also free of charge. The facility itself is of medium size for a climbing gym and it's efficiently packed with plenty of offerings, including a lead climbing section, top rope, a long bouldering wall as well as a moon-board-like training wall and campus board. We'll have warm memories of our day at Crimper's and will most likely return for the competition next year.

Just visiting from out of town and wanted to explore another climb gym. I was alone thus climbing vertical walls only on auto belay. I noticed the tracks set on the only 4 auto belays had 5.5 then jumped to 5.10. There was no room for improvement and I'm only at a 5.8-5.9 level so it wasn't as fun as I hoped. It seemed to be more of a bouldering gym and I tried it, but the sticker tags were so convoluted that it was hard to find where there the next hold was. Last thing, the place was so hot bc a/c was not great. It was uncomfortably hot to have fun for me.

Good climbing gym for the area. Has a few auto belay short walls, a few short wall top rope options, and a small lead climbing area that is a bit taller, but is mostly for bouldering. Good setting and problems but boulders are designated by colored tape and not color coding the holds themselves which can be confusing.
Overall, a good place to climb in SWVA.

Small but mighty. I came in from out of town and was lucky to find this gym for an evening of climbing. The staff were super friendly, the routes will challenge climbers of all abilities, and the overall atmosphere was very community-oriented. Crimper's is a great "climber's" climbing gym, with a variety of routes and climb types to challenge anyone. There is a lot of bouldering (soon to be expanded even further), a decent amount of top roping (also soon to be expanded), and a dedicated lead area, as well. (My personal favorite part!!) There is also a nicely setup training area (also soon to be expanded), and classes are offered in training/fitness, and climbing techniques.
The owners (Danielle and John) are both passionate climbers, and this gym is the embodiment of their visions and passions. There is a healthy community surrounding the gym, and everyone from Danielle and John, to the staff, and to the members, are very welcoming, helpful, encouraging, and kind.
There are a number of membership options, ranging from day passes to monthly memberships, and prices are very reasonable. The facilities alone are worth it, but when you factor in the community, the classes, etc, its a no-brainer. We are incredibly fortunate to have this true gem in our little corner of the world!

Not my style, could be yours though they have a decent gym, but their walls are high and mats are hard highest and hardest I've been too weird combo. I take risky moves and don't feel as comfortable topping out on their walls than other gyms. The routes are set fair, but not what I'd call original. Most routes are marked with tape instead of being just set in all the same color hold. Not a huge deal just something I'm not for in a mainly bouldering gym. You can not campus without shoes. Normal rule but they're quick to hop on you about the little stuff, being said if you're huge into safety practices this is for you. I'm not more of dirt bag grunge climber that like to take responsibility for myself

I'm new to the area and really enjoy rock climbing gyms for working out. I don't climb with any specific goals but strength training. Facility was great for my goals and I got excited. However, staff told me they don't allow climbing with anything but climbing shoes. They told me I can ask the owner. I contacted the owner and he said the same. I use Vibram FiveFingers and have for years at other gyms. I go from the wall to lifting weights and save time and money using my vibrams. I believe, and you can see this in other reviews, that this is a strict and serious climbing gym. Doesn't look like the place for me.

I used to climb at this gym, but stopped when their promotions for the business became political. A gym should not be political or instill feelings of hostility towards a certain social group. A gym should be a common ground for climbing lovers to interact and enjoy their workout without being judged by the owners for their political beliefs.

Very clean facility with state of the art walls. Plenty of seating area to rest and socialize. Great coaches and staff.
