Lowest google rating in Hampton roads for base gym. No AC in gym in summer, no heat in gym in winter. Sauna hasnβt worked in years. A little paint and refinish of the gym floor would go a long way. At least attempt to make it look halfway decent. Not a good look for brand new to the navy and marine corps students IMO.

If you want to workout and go, this place has it all, but the heat (mid-January) doesn't work so layer up. Otherwise all the extras (men's sauna, men's showers) don't work.

They changed the layout recently and it doesnβt make any sense. There is less room in the dumbbell areas and we are on top of each other. Also all the equipment is facing the open areas and everyone is positioned to STARE at people trying to do HIIT type things. Also closing the group exercise room.. idk where Iβm supposed to do my workouts in there anymore.
Also instead of fixing AC the door just gets left open in the summer. Itβs so humid and hot and bugs flying in my face the whole time.

Just keeps getting worse.
Apathy abounds. The care of this facility is not there any more. No towels, dirty mildew showers just no pride.
Still in bad shape. Dirt in the corners of the shower the people don't caring for gym. They come in open it up and then sit. Rarely do I see the staff moving about the gym.
Without a doubt it has gone down hill. Showers are moldy, no A/C and the staff can no operate the TVs. It seems that no one cares about the gym!
Still needs a cleaning and A/C in cardio room but at least now they have hot water. Oh washing machine is broken so they have no towels.
Use to be a great place to work out. Now showers don't work no hot water and it not as well kept. I'm very disappointed in the care of this facility.

Gym is a little bit on the smaller side. If you like working out early on weekdays just be ready for marines to take over. Usually around 6-7ish.

Ehh. It will get the job done but the layout was a little confusing and the mens locker room is way in the back and up the stairs. Which is kind of torture after heavy cardio or a leg day. No towel service from what I could tell.
They did have plenty of cardio options, a full gym, racquet ball court, and enough weight machines to go around. Two of the machines I tried were broken. But its free for military and has enough to get your workout done. Overall it was clean but their fans could use some dusting.

The staff is unbelievably helpful and friendly and aside from the distinct lack of platforms and squat racks, it has a good set of equipment.
Dam Neck is an annex of Oceana, which means the funding is allocated from there. I can only assume the gym funding works the same way, which means the pilots at Oceana get great equipment/facilities while the training commands at Dam Neck are left with the scraps.
Unfortunately the head of the facility is also located at Oceana, and when offered free equipment for the Dam Neck facility, can't even budget her time to respond to the offer. I hope that some day someone moves into that position that can effectively manage both sites without allowing one to descend into disrepair like Dam Neck has.

The pool has been closed due to maintenance and the website isn't updated regularly. You can try calling to see if and when the pool will ever re-open, but no one will answer or you'll get a busy tone. The gym doesn't have AC in some of the spaces. The showers and locker rooms are trash. They are definitely some of the worst MWR facilities that I've experienced as an AD sailor. It doesn't seem like they have the resources or staffing to support the fitness and well-being of the marines and sailors in the area.

Men's showers are always backed up never any hot water at one point in time the cardio bikes were practically falling apart the building has holes in the floors and even stuff falling from the basketball court ceiling... Not satisfied with the upkeep here, unfortunately, This won't likely change soon

Crowded in the morning from 0630-0745, but not bad at all if you get started when it opens at 0500. Only one squat rack, which is bad, but doable for anything else you need to do; suitable free option (with base access) than other member gyms in the area, but may be tight at times.
Changing review from 3 starts to 2. The above still applies, but frequenting here as base staff for the past two years, I rarely experience hot water in the showers and the locker room in general isn't a great experience; to quantify, there's frequent mold in the summer time (while I acknowledge the area gets humid) and there's been standing water in the showers for a couple weeks now. Understand this could be a budgeting issue, but that doesn't change my opinion.

The gym is located inside the NEX. Parking is scarce. Once inside, the entrance is clearly labeled but you still might miss it. They have towel service, but these towels don't wrap around the waist for showers so I recommend bringing your own towel. Cardio room has everything you need. Weight room is always packed. Come with a plan. Basketball court has six baskets. Men's locker room is upstairs. Functional fitness area is not at all functional.

Not the best gym you'll ever use, but not bad for an old gym that has had a few updates. The staff has always been helpful and friendly. Not normally too busy and has a fairly decent selection of cardio and weight machines, with free weights available for use as well. The basketball court is rather dated and could use some updating, but it still works well for a quick pick-up game and just shooting around. The available racquetball courts, cycling room, and trx room also add options for varying up your workout. Multiple classes are offered and you can schedule with the managers for a specific class for your own group. On site locker rooms with showers need some updating and repairs, but will suffice for what they're needed for. Overall, not a terrible gym, but no where near the best either.

Overall a nice and clean gym. Doesn't get super crowded after work and as long as you're not a tool I've never met anyone who won't let you work in with them. A wide array of free weight, 10-125. 2 barbell benches not including one incline and one decline. 1 squat rack and 2 spare bars for some deads or rows. Only qualm is that they non-gym type music pretty loud.
