Tried to sign up but all the shady rules they have set in place almost gave me a heart attack. The charging every 2 weeks is ridiculous because they know one of those months, you get charged 3 times. Greed is really ruining these people’s ethics.

Lord forbid you ever need to cancel your membership as Gold’s Gym Merrifield makes the process and absolute nightmare to cancel. I’ve been trying for two months, and despite them telling me my account is canceled, they keep charging me. Every bad review about their shady billing is 100% true. Avoid this place at all costs!

I'm giving them the benefit of 2 stars because the facility itself is at least clean and cared for (especially compared to other gyms in this area). I cannot give them more than two stars though because of this gym's predatory membership agreements. I froze my account for two months, but they started charging me again after one month. Then I tried to cancel and they kept pushing back the cancellation date. Their customer service is outsourced and horrible. You're confronted with planned ignorance every step of the way. DO NOT GET A MEMBERSHIP WITH THIS GYM. It is not worth the lower monthly price tag. You will save money by spending more per month at a gym with more honest customer service practices.

I went to Gold’s Gym today for a trial and ended up signing up for a full membership. On my way out the door, I dropped my wallet in the parking lot. The gyms owner, Jottham helped search the parking lot with me in 30 degree weather. Gym is good, staff is exceptional.

Frequently the gym pushes a single religion on the TV and won't change to news or sports or literally anything else. Instead they force sermons. I would rather have the TV be off than have six screens forcing everyone on cardio to watch this. They should have a policy about this, even if you feel the need to push religion here it should be at least a few to accommodate the customers and not whatever the management feels is what everyone should worship. Rough.

Horrible customer service, I just moved to Virginia from Georgia, I got the 3 day pass online to tryout the gym I was denied access because I don’t have a local ID yet and I JUST GOT TO THE AREA!!! I got my gym membership through golds because of its convenience in locations both to my house and work. They offered me a deal that was just as good as other gyms, so I took them up on it because of that. I was also offered a "personal training session" by the desk worker at the time I signed up, only realizing once he started mumbling prices that it cost more money, so be mindful that the workers here WILL try to soft sell you on extra services. I got him to admit the pricing and declined, but stayed because of the location and convenience.

Another reason I stayed at this location was the fact that this specific location listed they had a women's only room, which was pointed out to me by the desk clerk when I signed up. I often feel discomfort working out in an area with men - this isn't to say all men are creeps, I just found over the past few weeks that the women's room was more comfortable, and I could have less pressure this way. Today when I visited, I was surprised to see a man in that area, and after more than a couple creepy interactions, I went to the desk and asked about the room. I was then informed that the room is no longer a women's only room, which is not what the site advertised.

If you are looking for a no-frills gym experience, this location is fine, but I've found the location on Ox Road (even without the women's only area) is more spaced out, comfortable temp, and in nicer condition. I will likely be moving my "home" location there after this experience. Don't advertise what you won't enforce.

This gym has gone downhill since the pandemic. Many people have left due to Golds increasing their membership and doing so without telling them.. they don’t realize the increase until they look at their banking or credit card statements. They don’t have as many group fitness classes because they can’t get instructor’s.They changed out the yoga room , rarely used ,with a few weights and punching bag. They only have 1 Fitness trainer who is actually great! Everyone else has left..says a lot . I remember months ago the hot water tap in the women’s bathroom was flowing steadily.. I talked to the manager and staff to let them know .. it’s took them days to get it fixed.. another cost passed onto the members.
Then there is the inability to get the A/C working correctly.. ongoing issue especially for the group excercise room. Some of the front staff put the heat up to 74-75 because they are cold.. ugh… how about curtailing this to save money instead of jacking up memberships?
There isn’t decent circulation in the facility and the fans they do have don’t oscillate. 3 fans for entire gym, 2 of which are in the group exercise room. The equipment is old and when stuff breaks they remove and don’t replace. They have 3 TV stations which are always turned to sports. Fairfax station is a bit better but it’s showing signs of the same especially the being charged more without notice.
.. not sure what type of business plan this is but I and many others are looking into Onelife gym. Apparently they are less expensive and offer better facilities, plus most of the golds gym instructors teach there( better pay better treatment) Golds used to have the best instructors.. but they didn’t keep in touch with them during the pandemic so many signed up with other gyms. There are a few excellent instructors left.
Again poor business plan!

Solid gym with good enough equipment. A little lacking when it comes to barbell choice and squat rack availability so if you're a power lifter or Olympic lifter, this won't be a top choice. If you're looking for a variety of machines and a generous free weight/bench press area, this won't disappoint. Staff has been friendly though I've only encountered the opening employees. Bathrooms/locker rooms are nice and clean, sauna works, sanitation stations are consistently stocked.

All around solid do-all gym option close to the highway, great for commuters.

My brother has been trying to cancel his membership for the last 3 months. He sends the emails you want him to call and makes 3 phone calls. He is out of the country and taking care of our father who has stage 4 cancer. Golds Gym has been frustrating and headache along the way. We have been trying to cancel the membership since August. Everyone we called said they had canceled, but they didn't. I will look into how I can claim this customer service. We've never experienced anything like this before.

The gym itself is fine, however, I would not recommend this gym due to the management engaging in shady business practices. I specifically declined an add-on service and then asked for it to be removed on two occasions, each time, the person at the desk wrote my information down and said it will be cancelled. There is hardly anyone ever at the front desk if you need something, and they often say a manager isn't around. When I finally was able to find a manager, she asked if I could come back the next day or wait an indeterminate amount of time. I asked about refunding the add-on service and she said that since she did not have an email from me, there's no proof I tried to cancel it (no one told me to email or gave me email information). She was unapologetic and told me it was my job to follow up to make sure it was removed (even though I was there to remove it and she asked me to come back the next day). There is a logbook of requested contact yet she wouldn't entertain even looking.

Terrible costumer service. The front desk lady couldn’t help me to cancel my membership which I’ve been trying back and forth for 3 months. She told me the only person that could cancel it was the manager and he won’t do it and call me liar. He says the front desk lady didn’t say that because he was standing next to him. The funny part is that when I ask to spoke to him she told he was busy with a client. I don’t need to lie because that is why the conversations are record it.

The name of the manager is Milo and he refused to give me his full name. I’ve been trying to make a claim and complain and the costumer service of this gym is trash. Doesn’t exist.

If that’s the way the manager treat the costumer I can’t imagine the rest of the service. They didn’t help me and Milo hung up on me.

3 months trying to cancelled a membership since they change the owner of our previous golds without notifying as and moved us to this location.

It’s unbelievable that they insult the costumers.

Manager at Merrifield doesn’t seem too interested in customer service. I came in today and discovered my membership doesn’t include a “towel service”, which I’m just hearing about for the first time today.

So, since this is my first time discovering this, I ask for a towel, just for today so I can have one for my post workout shower. I made sure to let him know I’d never heard of this and that I’d bring my own towel next time. That didn’t matter, he refused to give me one.

I guess he’d prefer that I use a bunch of paper towels from the bathroom instead. Maybe I’m wrong for showering in such a dirty gym anyway.

I’ll go to Springfield or Chantilly Gold’s, with my own towel, next time.

The womens locker room goes into a small room which is super nice to have a little privacy away from the "testosterone section " aka the free weights LOL where I usually stretch or do my core workouts and I absolutely loveeee that. It's a gym, you come here to pick stuff up and put stuff down. Can't complain. Cleaning staff work hard, I consistently see them in/out the locker room. Bad gym with barely any new equipment and not enough bumper plates during peak hours whatsoever. Water fountains are all warm except one that's maybe a little warm even when not used frequently. No actual water bottle filler just fountains. For how many people go here regularly it makes it very obvious that they're simply skimping out on all the ways they could be improving. Only thing golds has that planet fitness doesn't is unsmithed barbells. Not even 24h. Also they close early on weekends which is bull cause that's when some people actually have time to workout. Such a waste of money. Better off at planet fitness.

Went in for a day pass one day because the gym I usually use was temporarily closed for a couple of weeks for construction. When I spoke with who I believe was the manager [edit: wasn't the manager, was a sales clerk], he offered a two week pass for a similar price. Of course, I accepted. It seemed like a good deal.

Having worked at Gold's gym in the past myself, I already knew that these guys are all about profit, so I figured if I just cancelled my membership in time, all would be well.

I was wrong.

The day pass would have costed me $20 just to work out that day. A few days after that workout, I sustained an injury, and I am not able to do most exercises. I stopped by the gym to submit a cancellation form, as I had already intended to with or without injury.

Between the day I worked out and the additional weeks I was charged for due to me having to wait 30 days for my membership to terminate, I am paying over $100 for having only worked out two days out this month at this gym.

Additionally, the barbells and plates here are rusted and probably don't weigh the correct weight. The equipment here is average at best.

You're better off getting a membership at the Xsport Fitness nearby (only downside for those who are serious about deadlift is that Xsport has hex plates).

Update 10/11/2021 : They are continuing to charge me even after 30 days post-cancellation. They are also not keeping accurate records here. I will update again.

Update 10/13/2021: I spoke with the general manager, Ramon Mastrogiuseppe, the head thief at this location, on 10/12/2021. I requested a copy of my cancellation form from him, since they wanted to take the liberty of inputting whatever cancellation date they deemed fit into the system in order to justify them making unauthorized transactions/withdrawals from my bank account.

Unsurprisingly, I was informed today that my cancellation form was magically "misplaced" despite Gold's Gym's SOP that states records should be kept for six months.

I spoke with customer care and they will be refunding the money to my account. I am thankful for their efforts in resolving the issue.

But.

There is a lot of fraudulent and suspicious activity and THEFT occuring at this location and this place needs to be investigated. Ramon Mastrogiuseppe needs to be fired and charged.

The gym itself is pretty ok but if it ever comes time to terminate your membership be prepared for a wild ride. I've requested my membership he terminated at least six times only to find out that after all of this there is no record of any of it on their end. The business practices at gold's gym border on predatory and should be avoided at all costs.

Personal trainer bailed on me for pushing myself too hard (at the trainer's behest) and having an asthma attack. Gold's wouldn't give me a new trainer or refund the remaining sessions I already paid for.

I would give golds negative stars if possible. They are vultures and don't care about their customers. Closing your account will take an act of god, I swear it. Its happened twice now.

When covid hit this location closed. We tried to close out our membership but the location was not open and we couldn't get through to anyone on the phone. They also stopped charging us on the auto-debit. We assumed they just closed our our account and they were going out of business. Unbeknownst to us, they moved our account to another location that was still open, without any notification. For 8 months they accrued monthly payments on our account but (didn't hit the auto debit so we had no idea) until we received a letter from a collection agency saying we owed $500.

I can go on about how we called everyone and their mother at golds and literally no one cared about helping us but this already long enough. Today we settled w the collection agency and our credit reports will be tainted for 7 years. I would sue but unfortunately we've moved out of state. These guys are giant... I'll stop myself. Abysmal customer relations. I've had bad encounters with gyms in the past when it comes to cancelling memberships but this one takes the cake. Pretty sure what they did to me is illegal but given the stakes it's hard to take legal action.

I canceled my membership when my location shutdown, the billing ceased, and I went on with my life. A few months later I noticed they charged me again so I cancelled them from my credit card. From this moment on they continued to bill me monthly for 6 months and then claimed I owed them all those dues. After polite phone calls and emails to tell them I had cancelled and they should remove the charges they claim that since there is no "record of my cancellation" there is nothing they can do. The real kicker is they had no record of my logins at my location either which leads me to believe they intentionally "misplace records" so that they can chase you down for bills. How they managed to reinstate my membership is of major concern, too.

This institution would rather alienate people and conduct shady business practices, than instill good will and try to earn back my business. I will never recommend Golds to anyone. If you ever come across Logan or Eva at customer relations be weary.

The gym is good. You have to go at certain times so it won't be packed. One thing though they need to hire new people to work at the front desk. The Indian guy which I think are one of the managers is not friendly at all. Very poor customer skills. Don't say hi. Just looks at you. The white girl, and white guy are not friendly neither. They lack customer skills.

On the other hand, the Mexican or central american guy is very friendly. He will greet you as you are taking your temperature. They need to hire more people with customer service skills. Other than that the gym is not bad

Deducted money from my account for no reason and said it was maintenance fee. We had paid extra $150 at the beginning so we could cancel any time but when now they charged $150. Very bad customer service and I will never go to this gold gym ever again.

Ive had and still currently having a horrible experience with customer service. I sent an email back in september about updating payment info and they got back to me a week ago 12/2. If I hadn't gone in person to change it who knows how much they would've charged me. Secondly, they have been repeatedly over charging me and when I spoke to someone about the charge he told me to send an email which was two weeks ago now and still no reply. I don't understand how hard it is to reply to an email. Thirdly, given the pandemic and how loosely they enforce the mask wearing mandate, I've felt very uncomfortable with the environment and have been wanting to cancel my membership. I also heard that they were going to charge all members an additional percentage due to loss of revenue due to the pandemic. I was told that regardless of the global situation chances of cancelling were unlikely or that I'd have to pay a large fee and then again sent to email customer service. Which has sent me down another rabbit hole endlessly waiting for an automated reply from a jock in an office. This is supposed to be a multi million dollar corporation and this is the best customer service they offer? I would rather go to planet fitness in the midst of this outbreak. I never write reviews but this deserved special attention. Maybe this is why branches keep closing? I will certainly be taking my business elsewhere as soon as I get my email confirmation back hopefully sometime this decade.

Mr. Hill was very professional and efficient with welcoming us to the gym during COVID times. The facility was clean, well maintained and didn't have a lot of people which made me feel safe enough to work out comfortably. Great place with great selection to work out whatever you need.

I renew my membership who expired this past March when the virus hit. I called several times to renew, no one picked up the phone and when I left a message no one called me back. So I went there on Saturday and told the person at the counter about it - his answer NONE. I asked if they were strict on the new boundaries due to the virus, a simple yes. Then I asked why do you let this lady cross the whole gym (which is big) without a mask. He looked and said ''she has a health condition'' so if she has then why isn't she wearing one. He said I know her, then called her by her first name and said ''where is your mask''? It happened to be in the office and they both laughed. Did I miss something? I am not sure if I should go back, my immunity has been compromised and I work for a surgeon. So we see patients by respect I should be concerned for them.

I like this gym but when I got my suscripción the person who helped me told me that I could switch plans and also cancel my membership without any cost but it turns out that when I wanted to change my membership then they told me that I have to pay 100. Then I went to change my plan and they told me that I have to pay $90 and then I said it’s fine then and the person who was in front of me only said: yeah that’s what I thought. How Ironic!

Mask wearing while lifting weights makes breathing harder and more difficult. Those who are afraid should stay at home. Bad hours especially on weekends with a closing time of 6pm. Can't get much done with hours like that. Also, Fairfax location had no air conditioning during the dog days of summer. Unacceptable when paying dues for years to this company.

Used to really like this gym, but making people wear masks in the middle of a set is absurd. Pretty close to canceling my membership. Now we have some dude complaining on another review... you in ow the risk, stay home and workout.

Gym was okay when I first joined in June then they decided to make everyone wear masks at all times. They’ll interrupt you in the middle of a set to tell you to put on a mask, they’ll tell you right after you take a sip of water to put on your mask, they’ll say something if it slides down the slightest bit from the top of your nose it’s pretty crazy. The worst part is the lady who I assume is a new manager who literally will follow people around and harass them about masks. Oh also she threatened to call the police on me and kicked me out of the gym and cancelled out my membership 🙌🏻

That super tense girl at the front desk, Hana, is far too quick-tempered for me. She isn't clear with what she needs from you so she gets noticeably frustrated when you can't read her mind. She's rude and demonstrates that she doesn't want to be there. She snapped at me and made this insane hand gesture when all I did was ask a question about a product. Not a member and won't be after that. Lol Homegirl either needs a few shots/bong hits before she goes to work to chill the hell out or quit the job if she doesn't like it. Either way, LIGHTEN THE HELL UP, HANA.

Been coming here for a few months after taking a few years off and the closing of the Tysons location. The place smells really bad and they seem to use alot of air freshener or industrial cover up to mask it. Which isn't the greatest scent either. Will be canceling my membership.

Terrible management. Machines disappear or get put in the ladies gym with no replacement. Yet they have multiple duplicates of other machines on the floor and could put one of those out of general circulation. When I mentioned this to the manager he just muttered something about blaming it on “corporate” and didn’t take any responsibility or even seriously consider fixing it. Staff is very rude, especially one woman who works at the front desk. When I tried to get her name later she was nowhere to be found (typical). Really a bummer because it’s a nice, big facility with plenty of parking and with decent management it could be terrific.

This was the first gym I ever joined some three years ago, and after attending the Loudoun County locations for the last two years, I still prefer this location (I moved back into the area). Yes it smells weird when you initially walk-in, yet once you get upstairs where the actual gym is, you're good. The weight room equipment may be old, yet it's the good stuff (no hex plates, and no bad - AKA unbalanced or bent barbells). They do have one platform (plus two half-power racks) and a two sets of bumper plates. They do have new treadmills.

The staff here is great. They make the enrollment process easy, and they're able to answer all your questions. I also never had any issues with other gym users here previously and currently.

The Gold's Gym is not a bad place to work out. I have good experiences with staff and facility. But be careful when you sign up. If you cancel membership, the Gold's Gym can still charge you fee and is incompetent in processing cancellation. I cancelled membership many months ago and but still never received refund for over-charged amount. The Gold's Gym promised to correct this but never resolved this issue. I am quite disappointed with the whole process

I was treated extremely rudely on my very first visit! I went in to inquire about membership and the front desk person, "Asia", was beyond unprofessional. She had spoken rudely and disrespectfully to the person before me and I was hesitant to even speak with her. When I tried to ask questions because she said no one was there to help me at the time, but didn't tell me when to return, who to speak with, or offer me any material, she began to speak over me, behaving immaturely and aggressively; she then told me to move so she could sign in members. And I wasn't even in their way! I would never have someone like her greeting or speaking with anyone as a representation of my place of business.

I have been attending this gym for the past three years, and I have one word to describe the place HOME. Everybody here is so helpful, kind, friendly and makes all members feel welcomed. The STAFF here is amazing, starting with Mrs. Linda in the Kids Club, all the Personal Trainers including Luke, Philip, Sofia and Chris, all the Front Desk Staff starting with Shawn, Patrick, Hind the list goes on.The Fitness Consultants are helpful as well Carlos and the tall good looking guy who works a lot, the instructors do a great job teaching the classes. If you are a NOVA resident I highly recommend you give this gym a chance and try it out, you will not regret it.
