Our first season with sports and the y was such a sucess that turned for the worse by the 2nd season. My son was looking for a more competitve fullfillment, after 1 season with the y he tried the rec soccer plus tryouts. He was so excited to make the team and cost was not a factor to fulfill his passion. Honestly i dont know if the team he made and we payed for ever received a permanent coach (the original assigned had to step away due to a family emergency) and it was a complete disaster unorganized mess that made him not want to play at all and costed us over 250.00(with the uniform and sign-up cost). At one point, We were offered a refund with no follow-up after 2 consecutive emails and my son completly quitting his passion. So disappointed with this facility and lack of communication through the whole later process. They come together for the team pledge that the coaches nor staff back. I highly recommend exploring all options prior to placing your kids in the sporting segment of the y. Perhaps if you are just looking for a sign-up sport to gather interest or for a younger athelete this may be the perfect fit, but if you are looking to take your athlete to the next level I would look elsewhere. They never did issue our refund and all correspondance from the director Liz completely ceased. There are so many options for sports that I would encourage you to do your research prior to taking the leap here.

1st time back after 10 years. Machines were good and available. Mens locker room was musty, lockers were rusty, sauna was inoperative, pool was closed and there was mold in the grout for the men's showers. I remember this being a very good facility that was busy at 0700 but today it was almost empty.

DEAR PARENTS who send their children to playrooms (up to 3 years old), have you seen the condition of the toys? Not a single working one. Everything is very old and not interesting for your children! Please, let's unite and bring at least one working toy! No need to bring broken junk. Just if everyone spends $20-30, your children will happily go there and play with normal toys! And it will be easier for the teachers that the children are busy, because when there are a lot of people, they can't keep up with everyone, and there are simply not enough toys for everyone.

When my family informed the Aquatic Director of a slippery spot by the outdoor pool where multiple kids had fallen she replied very defensively and said the kids parents should supervise them. One minute later a one year old fell and hit her head on the concrete. When we informed her of the situation she responded very coldly. The lifeguards were very kind and wanted to help, but the director's lack of concern and professionalism was very concerning. Made me wonder if it was safe to be at this facilities pool at all. So sad, we love the Y.

The overall staff is friendly and helpful. This place is super clean. The janitorial staff is outstanding. Every time I visit this YMCA there are several people keeping things clean. In the heat of the summer, patrons tracking in water from the outdoor pool, yet the staff is right there wiping it up, trying to keep it dry. Walk through the fitness areas, weight room, children’s play zone and you will see someone cleaning and tightening things up. Keep it up and Thank you for caring about what you do!!!

First time visiting this YMCA to enjoy family open swim. My kids were excited to explore, as was I after a long work week. The facility was clean, nice layout from what I could see.

The reason I gave 3 stars was because as I entered and exited, the staff were a miserable looking bunch. Immediately, the excitement drained from my family walking up to the front desk and seeing three staff members who looked tired, uninterested, lost, and could barely hear the defeated "Hi." Than, being that it was my first time and unaware of how things are run, when it was time to leave I addressed the staff again to confirm if where I was going to exit was correct, considering they had already closed. Even my kids asked what was wrong with them, because all three people at the desk just stared at me. It took three times and for me to uncomfortably yell my question, for them to speak and still two out of the three stood there like statues just staring at me as if they got caught committing a crime and clueless.

Whoever's in charge of hiring, please explain to these staff members what customer service looks like, especially in this type of establishment.

Nice YMCA with good people but when it comes to the aquatics director getting back to you, forget about it. You will never hear from them. We have taken swim lessons for years now at this center and when there is an issue (class canceled due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances), you are told that you'll be issued a credit or rescheduled and someone will reach out to you with more details. Not once in those situations has anyone reached out to me. I have to take my personal time and constantly use it to reach out to get answers or help with issues. This is unacceptable for a place of business. Do better

They really need to do a better job at the pool schedule. Came in on Monday 2/19 and open swim ended at 11 but would open back up at 12. I just waited with my 1 year old for an hour in the car, then came back in and went into the pool area just to be told by the life guard that the senior swimming time was from 11-1…they only let us swim by the lap lanes….UNHEATED… And the old people weren’t even swimming in the deep end. They we just hanging out in the shallow end using up the whole heated pool side. They could’ve just sat in the hot tub. So myself and three other families had to swim with small children in a freezing cold pool. Don’t even open the pool for family swim…Now I think my kid is coming down with a cold..Thanks…

If you’re looking to help build your child’s confidence and coordination – then swimming lessons at the YMCA (Great Bridge/Hickory) is highly recommended! In just a couple of months we have seen growth and progress in our 5 year old swimmer, who is non-verbal and a twin. He has learned to reach, “blow bubbles”, turn on his back, built up strength to climb out of the pool (which is a very important for pool safety) just to name a few positive experiences. All the instructors are great, especially Ms. Lori! She is patient, fun, knowledgeable, and communicates with ease. We are lucky to have found such a great organization.

I haven’t been coming to Great Bridge that long, but I’m so grateful for the thoughtfulness, camaraderie and support I’ve received from fellow members! I was getting ready to work out & realized that I had left some needed items. Not only did a lovely young lady stop what she was doing to help me, she even insisted that she share some of her own resources with me. I was completely blown away and full of gratitude. ☺️🥂 This is a beautiful place for families, couples and individuals to come and be at home, away from home.

It's the Y. The gym equipment is great, the facility is clean, and people of all ages are working out. Lots of kids running around in the summer, so watch out for that. We've used swim lessons (great), had kids on TIDE's swim team (great), taken classes (great), and used the equipment (great). It's got a lot to offer and like the facility and its staff.

We have been going to swim lessons at the Suffolk and Elizabeth City YMCA for years, NO ISSUE. We started going to this one first month was fine but 2nd month, different instructor and my kids came over to me saying the instructor was creepy and making them feel uncomfortable. I questioned what was wrong, they said did you see us, he made us jump up on the side of the pool backwards (out of water) and stood behind us while he grabbed our legs. It hurt their belly and it was weird. The guy was older and he was weird. I confronted the swim director who could care less and said she has over 500 or 5000 can’t remember in swim lessons and my kids probably didn’t like him cause he was firm. I knew then I was wasting my time. I called and left a message for the customer executive director 2 weeks ago, still no follow up. Sounds like they know and covering it up. My kids will not be going back here. Be cautious taking your kids here for swim lessons and while I sat in the lobby every time there were daycare complaints in the infant room. Be cautious there too.

Save your money go elsewhere. I was disrespected by an instructor named Jeremy and I reported him. The aquatic director which is a female didn't do anything about it. I also paid for for son's swim lessons as well as the 93.00 monthly membership fee and it was the third week of them not having his name in the system with his assigned instructor or on the paper that is out on the desk in the pool area. They are really nasty people. Don't support this ymca, there are cheaper more better places out there for swimming like recreational centers. You have been warned.

Initial promotion of the volleyball sports program indicated a twice to three times a week practice schedule. That was canceled upon an unexpected interest in the program. Season play did not utilize regulation rules. Continued reiteration of a points system not being of importance was negated by the keeping of score during game play. Upon the season finale teams were ranked and placed into a tournament with neighboring YMCAs. The rules during the tournament varied from the season long rules that were utilized and varied from one game to the next. The line of play for a ball being out was moved which created interference with basketball equipment stationary upon the ceiling. One of the games the visiting team was a player down therefore our team was asked to voluntarily handicap itself by removing one player. The coach for the VA Beach Y apparently was a paid professional coach who coached city wide for the Y. The coaches the Hickory Y had were volunteers. The VA Beach Y illegally rotated players throughout games in order to allow their strongest players to be utilized for servers. When I addressed my concerns I was told that everyone deserved a chance to serve and that once again points or standing played no part . If this was the case then why was the other team allowed to strategically place players on the court to put them at an advantage. Obviously points mattered to them. After one game the sports director instructed the players of my daughters team to not show obvious emotion of elation upon winning as they needed to put theirselves into the shoes of the opposing team. All payers were in the same shoes upon entering on to the court. Overall there was no one representing the Hickory Y whom advocated for the success of the teams which they were suppose to be representing. This organization is unprofessional and promotes itself falsely as others have said as a representative of Christian values. My child’s team did not win the final game and upon conversation at home later my child expressed her disappointment in losing to cheaters. Her team did not lose to an opposing team but rather to a system which continually moved the goal post in order to produce an equitable outcome. I suggest steering clear if you have aspirations to pursue HS, College or professional level play.

The Y's sense of logic is a little off when it comes to their pool, how is it logical that a kid has to tread water in a 5' pool in order to go down a slide that empties them into a 4' pool? Who ever the aquatics director is needs to think about a reevaluation of their swim policy...

Billie (white hair front foyer/office) was EXTREMELY RUDE and condescending to two of 18 year old members on 2-22-2022 after their workout. She demanded proof of their 24 hour status though could’ve easily scanned their cards by making them go outside and scan the cards in front of other members that are classmates. As a paying member of the 24 hour option and a 10 year member of this organization I am appalled that her “sorry” was sarcastic followed by another employee who justified the actions by saying these two had doppelgängers with unauthorized access attempts. Thankful I wasn’t there to witness; however, Billie needs additional training to avoid unnecessary incidents such as these. UNSATISFACTORY YMCA!

Our whole family loves the YMCA facilities, but this is so far from a Christian organization. Our 11 year old son scraped his toe on an exposed fragment by the outdoor pool. They insisted on doing an accident report (even though we were in a hurry to leave and there was no blood). As the lifeguard was filling out the report, THEY ASKED MY CLEARLY MALE SON WHAT HE IDENTIFIES AS!

First of all, that question is ridiculous. Secondly, my son had no idea there are mentally ill people with gender dysphoria and I had to explain it to him because of their wokeness. (They also celebrated pride month, which, whatever, but stop calling yourself “Christian”)

Edit: the 24/7 access is amazing. Wish people would pick there weights up still.

Number 1. This gym is very crowded in the weight room. This is in large part to the fact that the weight room is very poorly organized. The huge TRX machine takes up so much space and has very little value. I understand the cardio equipment for people with disabilities, but the rowing machine can be moved up stairs. The weight room is also lacking a proper should press machine, abdominal machine, and lacks any sort of hammer strength equipment.

Number 2. The cardio room has tons of cardio equipment. The cardio room is much less crowded and really does not need all the machines, where that extra space could be used for a stretching abdominal area.

Number 3. The front desk staff and weight room staff are always very friendly.

Number 4. Gym cleanliness is top notch. It’s a wonderful feeling knowing the equipment is clean while working out. The dust does need to be vacuumed more frequently.

Number 5. The pricing structure forces people to pay for all the gym features which include classes, two pools, childcare, and kid zone. I do not use any of those features and still have to pay for it, which is $70 per month for a single person membership. The price is too high for being in Chesapeake. I do like the recent change where the YMCA is no nationwide, meaning if I travel I can likely find a gym to use still.

Number 6. Parking. The parking is a mess because that sentera center keeps modifying which parking spots are reserved or not reserved.

Overall the gym has mediocre weight lifting equipment and gets crowded compared to the price you have to pay. Some rearranging could greatly improve this gym.

In my opinion, the Great Bridge YMCA is the best in the area. A membership is undoubtedly expensive, but it does get a little cheaper for big families, low-income earners, etc. They have an outdoor and indoor pool, both with lap lanes and slides. The outside pool has a huge kids' play area as well. The I-Zone is great for childcare, including rock climbing, four square, and a variety of video games. Up front is another play area for kids under 10 that looks really fun. And can't forget the gym, of course. Always a bunch of open cardio machines, but the weights area gets crowded sometimes. Lots of little stuff too: basketball court, coffee and tea machines, nursing area, nice locker rooms, sauna, dance classes. Overall great value if you or your family can take advantage of all the services they offer.

I've been going to the ymca for about 6 years
3 different locations In Chesapeake
Princess Ann, Greenbrier Parkway,
And this one , people have no respect for others and you can see that the min u walk in .
Be careful from employees they will look up ur info and use it for personal issues
Racist management and some employee
Not all
I've know many guys that quite from there for the treatment
I have a family member 13 years old girl kicked out the pool for wearing tights to the pool cuz she's little shy
A guy threaten my wife and I complained but nothing happens cuz the guy was white and maybe a police officer
So after all ymca is a place for family away from any race conflict and they need to make sure employees know that too.
For me I advice everyone to go to a different location and see the true friendly family environment at the ymca
DON'T GO TO THE HICKORY YMCA UNLESS YOU WANT TO SEE SOME LOW LEVEL TREATMENT.

I just moved here to Great Bridge 2 weeks ago. I was really excited to find out there was a YMCA location 2 miles away. I joined two days ago. Today was my we llness appointment....9 am. Well, I could not complete the appointment because the staff failed to schedule my appointment for a day when I would actually be in the computer as a member. So, the morning was wasted. My instructor could only take me through some of it......how confusing is this starting out??? I will have to see if the piece of paper the man left under the counter will still be there on Monday, my next scheduled appointment. Ok, whatever, right. No, not right. I went back tonight to use the gym and shower. The door, the main front entry door to this facility has the hours of operation posted on them. So, that is the time I am going by. It's my first day. Well I'm in the shower and a staff member comes in there and tells me they are closed......I'm in the shower, mind you. He tells me they are closed and I have to go I have to finish and I have to leave. So I'm thinking really this is really happening. I thought I still had more than 30 minutes left . Because that is what the door says that I walk through to get into the facility. So as I am putting on dirty clothes in a hurry while the man is standing there. I'm still in disbelief. I'm embarrassed why I don't know the entire places close down the lights are off and there's people standing at the front that work there just looking at me as I walk out with wet hair my slippers on and not even fully dressed. I am very disappointed I will not be going back and I will be asking for a refund. This is a true story this is exactly how it happened and I'm pretty disgusted. I mean I'm really embarrassed because everyone's looking at me and asked me really telling a man to leave the YMCA. I am just in disbelief with the staff and just a function of the facility to not change something simple as a few numbers on their front door so that this wouldn't happen to a brand new member that just paid for A membership. I am in disbelief and I'm very disappointed very disappointed embarrassed. So I got dressed in the parking lot and it's 40゚ outside. Wet hair and just really disappointed.

Here it is April. I have this location another chance. Yesterday I was approached by a staff member. There were several other men on their phones. I was the only one asked not to use my phone. This man picked me from a crowd, isolated me as he stereotyped me and felt he had to say something to me, out of anyone else on their phone! I am appalled at the staffing!
They are rude and judgemental.

I like to swim indoors. In weather like today, indoor swimming is the only way to go. However, they only have four lanes, three taken by swimming lessons, and one by two other ppl. Too crowded. They should either limit their appetite for taking kids for swimming lessons, or they should lower my membership fee. When I have the demand, they cannot supply. Simple, lower your fees then due to your limited capacity and refusal of services. Summer can be even more ridiculous when there is a thunder. The whole swimming thing is closed for safety. In a modern time like this, cannot ground your building ?

I've been to the outdoor pool 4 times this summer. On each occasion, the pool was closed shortly after I got there because someone pooped in the pool. I realize these things happen. On other days, I've made plans to use the pool, only to be texted by friends saying the pool is closed due to the same problem.
I never had this problem when using the Mt Trashmore location or even when a member at the Jewish Community Center in VA Beach. This facility has a very similar layout as the GB/H YMCA, where the shallower and deeper areas are connected. I wish I could give a suggestion as to how to remindy this problem. My solution is to cancel my membership and renew at the Jewish CC. A little travel is worth knowing that parents are more in tuned to their child's BM schedule. (How a parent couldn't know their child crapped in the pool is beyond me.) Plus, it is larger with more to offer. Thought it would be great to become a member of this YMCA, but there are way too many people for such a small facility. There are also too many unattended children in the outdoor pool.

YMCA Great Bridge/Hickory Summer Camp is a FOR PROFIT SCAM ran at your children's expense. They are NOT equipped to handle the capacity of children it enrolls. 1. It does not have the necessary availability of space/rooms to properly, AT ALL, PERIOD. 2. Because of this, the children spend almost all their time outside on a back lot field that only has one sheltered/covered area with some tables. This includes morning, afternoons; really anytime the counselors can have them out there they will be outside. 3. This is also where all of there belongings are kept ALL DAY. Yes, this includes their lunch boxes (which will have their morning snack, lunch, and afternoon snack). These lunch boxes are overfilled into "coolers" BUT these "coolers" have no ice/ice packs and the lids are left off. They are basically just boxes where your kid will drop off their lunch box. Now, I don't care how many ice packs you pack into your kids lunchbox, when it sits in the summer heat cooking ALL day like theirs does, no ice pack can save it from getting gross. 4. Now, as far as the heat the goes, only if the heat index reaches above an absurd temp do they bring the kids inside. At that point, all the kids are forced into the gymnasium which is the only available are to put the kids. They have no separated rooms with tables and chairs and fun activities set up for your kids to enjoy, do not be fooled. 5. Outside, they have ONE porta potty for ALL kids to use, MALE AND FEMALE. The porta potty is NOT CLEANED on any regular schedule. It can go well OVER A WEEK without being cleaned or without the drum of wash water being refilled, meaning the children have NO WASH STATION to wash their hands after using the porta potty. The potty portion of the porta potty itself is jammed packed and stuffed so full of excrement, feces, urine, fluids, toilet paper, that it is only mere inched from the top of the toiled seat. When I last checked it personally myself the other day it smelled from yards away with the door closed as it had not been changed in OVER A WEEK. 6. When they say that your child will be swimming and having fun, don't be fooled. They are not going to be swimming in the large pool where all the fun happens with the slide and splash zone. All they do is remove the very last lane divider and all campers must only swim in those very last two lane spaces. 7. MORE THAN HALF OF ALL FIELD TRIPS ARE CANCELLED. This is also another scam the YMCA gets over on you to not only reach into your purse strings but a scam to draw you in thinking that your child will have a fun and active summer while you are obligated to work or were hoping just to give them a fun week at camp to break up the summer. The YMCA has you not only pay for camp registration and pay the weekly camp fee but they also sneak in that you are paying higher weekly camp fees for the ones that supposedly have field trips of do extra special things. NOPE, usually all cancelled. 8. Other than the gym they have one small "prison style" room (few small windows on the back wall, all concrete walls) that they utilize as a so called "cool down" room where is packed full of children who have to sit on the ground for what I was told is only a half hour or so after they come in from outside. When I entered this room you couldn't even see the floor as every inch was covered with kids. I was told this was the only room they had which was air conditioned to use to "cool down" after being outside.

Objectively, My kids are moderately ok with going because they do see some friends when they're there and once in a while do get to go on a field trip once in a blue moon, but I get a lot of complaints daily from them. I will actively be seeking alternate care and at the very least never use them again for summer camp, ever and will be contacting the director. Other than that the Y has other great classes and programs and the pool is nice, just NOT their camps for kids!!!!!!

This is the best Y in the area. Play center for kids of various ages is amazing. Therapy indoor pool nice and warm. Water slides in both indoor and outdoor pool. We drive a little further just to go to this Y.

Compared to most military gyms, I would rather spend my time in this facility. The staff is nice, usually always have the coffee I want ready. Sauna is small, but I can deal with that, their equipment is taken care off nicely.

Really nice facility and friendly staff but the smell of chlorine from the indoor pool hits you like a wall. It's odor completely permeated the entire facility when I was there today and I had to cut my workout in the weight room short today because I developed a migraine and became severely nauseous. I've never had that happen to me at other YMCA locations with an indoor pool before. Not sure what they are doing at this facility but I will not be going back.

Great pools, gym and kids activities. They have active tracks fitness tracker, a rock wall in the interactive zone, that adults can also climb. Parents night out where they watch your kids. An indoor pool that is heated. An outdoor pool that is really nice. All around this is my favorite YMCA in the Hampton Roads area.

Best YMCA and one of the best gyms around. Not cheap for a family, but worth every penny.

This place sucks. The staff was unhelpful. My kids went to summer camp and they always asked me to not sign them up again. I now work out at planet fitness and my kids go to triple r ranch and they love it. A little more expensive but worth it.

The best YMCA around. The staff is always so helpful. You are always greeted with a smile. No matter where you go in the building its always super clean. I am so happy they added in more changing stalls with more room in them as well. So much easier to get my 2 year old and myself changed after we finish swimming. The Kids zones are amazing, as well as the staff that works in them. I would truly recommend this location to everyone.

We love this Y. My children ages 4 and 9 have both taken swim lessons here. The instructors for both ages were patient and great with them. I like taking them to open swim time and then taking them to the kid zone so I can work out afterwards as well. That way we have family time together and I get to work out as well. The staff in the older and smaller kid zone are always interactive with my kids and nice to me. The facility is always clean. I always see an employee cleaning something somewhere everytime I come here. This y has helped our family become closer and healthier. We love you guys!

They are just not helpful at all. I have had 4 incidences where the staff were unhelpful, late, or inflexible. Their policies are very unnecessary and cause inconveniences and undue stress. The level of service that were provided do not justify the amount of money they request.
