Disappointing Experience at Gymstrada

We have been long-time members of Gymstrada and have generally enjoyed our experience. However, recent changes have significantly impacted our satisfaction.
The first issue arose due to the loss of parking across the street, which has created a chaotic situation, especially during peak class times. Parents are now forced to circle the block multiple times in search of a parking space, often arriving late and disrupting the class. This has not only caused stress for parents but has also made it difficult for the gym to maintain a smooth and orderly environment with the small space the parents have for viewing. But that was something I was willing to do just so my daughter can participate 2x weekly but also dread every. single. time.

Our primary issue stems from a recent incident involving my daughter's developmental gymnastics class. After a brief hiatus, my daughter returned to the class and as a group that rotates in different stations with some new, younger coaches at some stations. These coaches are responsible for spotting students, regardless of their skill level or when applicable.

My daughter, who is still learning the handstand-to-bridge transition, was asked to attempt the skill in which she did not know she was not being spotted. The coach insisted she perform the move. Unfortunately, my daughter fell and landing straight on her back which was very painful.
This incident was particularly disturbing because it deviates from our previous experiences at Gymstrada. In the past, coaches have always been attentive to students' needs and provided appropriate spotting, even for less challenging skills.

Following the incident, I spoke with the gym's management. Instead of acknowledging the coach's error, they placed blame on my daughter, suggesting she should have communicated her need for assistance. The coach also claimed to be unfamiliar with my daughter and stated that she had never seen her before. This is a concerning oversight, as it suggests a lack of attention to detail and a failure to properly assess students' abilities. Given that the coach was unfamiliar with my daughter, it is even more important that she provide extra care and support, including spotting, to ensure the student's safety at least until they get familiar with that child’s abilities.

Furthermore, the coach's decision to dismiss my daughter after her first attempt at the handstand-to-bridge transition is unusual and inappropriate. It is common for coaches to provide multiple opportunities for students to practice a new skill, especially when the skill is challenging or requires additional support. By dismissing my daughter after only one attempt, the coach demonstrated a lack of care, patience, sympathy and understanding.

Despite my daughters distress, the coach continued to dismiss her concerns and urged her to proceed to the next station. This was a clear indication that the coach was more focused on maintaining a fast pace than on ensuring the well-being of her students.

Given this disappointing experience with the incident, the ongoing parking challenges, the staff's response to the incident, and the overall impact on our satisfaction with the gym, we have decided to discontinue our membership at Gymstrada. The gym's failure to prioritize student safety and its dismissive attitude towards our concerns have eroded our trust.

I cannot recommend Gymstrada enough for anyone looking to start gymnastics. My granddaughter, who is new to the sport, absolutely adores it here. The investment in her classes is truly worth it as I can already see her progress. Place is filthy. I would 1000000X not recommend this facility to anyone with children under 10 or children who can’t speak for themselves. The “coaches” are not attentive - some VERY young and not engaged with small children. They basically throw kids from one station to the next with little thought or care into working with children and helping them learn anything. Kids are standing around waiting to be told what to do - absolutely WASTE of money.

There’s a TON of 5 star reviews which sounds appealing at first sight. Gymstrada is like Amazon - fake reviews. I found it so odd after arriving and seeing the classes first hand and experiencing the place myself. But it all made sense when I saw posters for “Give us a 5 star review and we will give you a $5 Starbucks gift card.” disgusting - there are WAY better gymnastic facilities around that take pride in teaching, professional and caring staff and a well maintained facility. Go right passed Gymstrada to Excalibur - you’ll be blown away by the difference.

This gymnasium is huge and safe. I’m always over concerned about everything, but this place makes me feel that my kid is well protected. My original thought was taking her somewhere and burn some energy out for this long summer vacation, but it turns out she’s not just burning energies, she is learning new skills everyday, and it increases her confidence. Best gymnastics program here in Virginia Beach. VERY flexible regarding scheduling as long as you are doing your best to give sufficient notice. Gym can handle the right balance of having lots of students per instructor without diminishing the learning experience. Advertised for 3 year olds but don’t allow a single parent to accompany their child on the floor. The parents are expected to wait behind glass doors without full view of their child. Obviously, my 3 year old daughter, my wife, nor I felt comfortable with going with the coach alone and not being able to see us. The reasoning is insurance. Maybe get another form of insurance? It gave me uneasy “Dr. Nassar” feeling. My kids are active in swimming, karate, soccer and this facility is the only one that doesn’t cater to younger toddlers.

I moved to this gym in the summer of 2014 from Ocean Tumblers. Gymstrada's team is my second family. We are truly one whole team. They don't separate the Excel girls from the JO (Junior Olympic) girls. Amazing coaches and family. Glad I found this gym.

My daughter has been going here for almost a month now and the coaches are so incredibly helpful and encouraging, they have told both me and her she’s advanced for the classes she’s in and have invited her to the developmental class so she can gear up for competitions! (I was a gymnast for 7 years of my childhood so YAY) I can’t wait to continue our journey!

We started as a free trial, my daughter (4yo) came running out in tears! She didn't want leave! So we signed her up. Then my son (14yo) said it looked like fun... now he is in the program too! Everyone is so nice and understanding! Every flexible and great communication!

I used to come to gymstrada as a kid and now years later I’m watching my son on the boys pre-team class. We love this place! The instructors are fantastic, they take the time to really break down the skills and I truly feel my son is getting top notch coaching! Highly recommend

The teachers are so great, patient, and kind with my 3 kids, who are between 3 and 8 years old. I love that they can all do gymnastics at the same time and my daughter is naturally determined and outgoing but my boys need a lot more help on the mat and I really appreciate them being so patient and encouraging!!
