I recently became a member of the YMCA, and yesterday was my first visit to the Mount Trashmore location. Unfortunately, it will also be my last.
Upon arrival, I was met by Sarah at the front desk, whose demeanor was unwelcoming and, at times, borderline aggressive. When I addressed my concern with another employee, I was told that “this is just Sarah’s disposition. ” Regardless, it is concerning that an individual with such an attitude is assigned to a front-facing position representing the organization.
In my opinion, Sarah may be better suited for a role that does not require direct interaction with members or the public. As a result of this experience, I will no longer visit the Mount Trashmore YMCA and will continue utilizing the Landstown location instead.

A sauna for the women but not one for the men is not right at all. Like at all. And the reason for it is always different depending on who you ask. I’m not coming back.

Do not recommend their services, the pool is open when they feel like it, the lifeguards barely care. And when you try to go and cancel your account they don’t stop billing you then claim that they can’t refund your money. Be ware

We signed our child up for basketball lessons to begin on a Monday in August. The day of the first lesson we received a notice 6 hours prior that both the day, time and location of the lesson was changing. Things happen, no big deal but more notice would have been appreciated. We show up to the different location 5 days later for the first lesson there and are told the lesson for that day was cancelled as there was painting in the gym the previous day and that the painting continued into the day of the lesson. Zero notice was given to us, we had to show up to find out. I requested to cancel the lessons altogether and to have the payment refunded. 3 weeks later, no refund and horrible communication from the "director". Completely unacceptable and incredibly frustrating to have to keep disappointing a child because of horrible management.

Nice basketball court! I'm sorry there's not enough space for bleachers. It's best to bring a camp chair if you're there to cheer on the kids! The children's coaches are great; they're very positive and readily encourage the players! Family members and friends are very enthusiastic, and I got the impression that people there are part of a very close-knit community!

i bought this membership because i use to love going to the sauna. the website states they have a sauna but, only in the women’s changing room???? why am i paying so much for a membership that isn’t what was advertised, and on top of that i have to pay the same rate as women without receiving the same services. If you advertise a sauna as a selling point maybe make it accessible to everyone who pays your fees. seems a little discriminatory …

When i first moved here YMCA was my go to. Daycare, after school programs, summer program and other programs. Art was the first for my 5 yo. Then swimming for both. I visited this location to get in out of the weather. I walk Mt Trashmore. There are too many rooms that could be opened for Daycare. One room off pool area for children smelled of bleach. The new workout area reserved for government workers as a membership. I would have to pay extra or use the old ones where I saw the older members. Some struggling to use. There are mega fitness centers opening with or without training. Medicare has a program for blue shoes. YMCA should go back to children programs to stimulate exercise and dance.

Two months trying to confirm membership cancellation and my card has been charged again! Beware allowing them access to your card it’s been nothing but a run around with the front desk staff NOT knowing they were supposed to give me a form after weeks of trying to cancel, my card was charged AGAIN!!. While still WAITING for “management” apparently Ms Swoop is the ONLY person who can handle cancellations but she doesn’t respond to emails, nor requests from staff “Sam” who says he’s waiting for her reply as well. Rediculous!

I’m giving them a 1-star for the location at Mt Trashmoore in Virginia Beach. Their teachers are okay. But their admin staff and director at really bias and self serving. They have inserted themselves into personal matters of families. The YMCA changes their policy’s what seems like every other month or quarter and expect families to just jump and adjust. I find their business practices to be very unfair and their lack of communication to be terrible between corporate staff and the center staff for the childcare programs.
I would not recommend going here unless you just need affordable quick childcare that’s convenient and bare minimum. Also if you can adjust to the random changing financial policies. The only one good thing I would say came from my daughter being here for 2yrs, she was potty trained with my help and family members and the lower grade teachers are really good in my opinion

We are new to town and have toured several gyms and attached kids clubs before joining the Y. We are so happy to have found both a wonderful gym, and community. We never left our kids in a gym childcare until here. Others were not clean, didn’t change diapers, or were irresponsible and rude. The stay and play staff goes above and beyond in making it clean and safe. I never have to worry about our children while we exercise or do “parents time out.” It’s such a game changer having young children! Everyone is so personable and kind to us and our children. We do swim, weekend family events, and plan to begin soccer in the Fall. If you are looking for a trusted family gym and community, it’s the Y!

We recently moved and felt the need to leave a review because we had such a “family” like and great experience! This doesn’t mean things were perfect but when we mentioned things they went ABOVE and beyond to correct anything. We primarily used the YMCA for childcare and were super happy with the care as well. I feel like they’re always trying to improve. My son Brody grew close with the counselors, and when we stopped care there briefly for other reasons, they were so happy to see him back it made his day! We also did 2 seasons of basketball. I teared up we left a piece of my little guys childhood behind.

Good Afternoon,
Let me start by saying, I enjoy the YMCA's and everything it has to offer. My home YMCA is Indian River and unfortunately the Pool area that contains the Sauna and Steam room was under repairs for the last few days. Being able to stretch in a sauna or steam room after my workouts is the greatest feeling. On a search to find a nearby YMCA that has either a sauna or steam room, I came across Mt. Trashmore. Granted I haven't been there in years and I'm aware of the remodeling that's been done over the years. It was the connections of the workers at Mt. Trashmore that turned me off and ultimately did not work out at that particular location. From the front door, guest service was laid back obviously helping another individual, however just like at other locations. The gym members can scan their tags and proceed. As I approached the desk (after waiting a few minutes without acknowledgement), the guest service rep immediately said "hold up or wait a minute." I jumped back like okay, my apologies. After I got scanned in, I let the guest service know, I'm not new to this YMCA location but it's been awhile since I've come to this location. Where is the women's locker room because y'all updated alot. He motioned to the right. Now I'm walking down this hallway which I'm now realizing it's a Pre-K school. I'm thinking in my head I don't want people to think I'm just peeping in the classrooms at children. Another gym goer saw me and said "you look lost, are you looking for the locker room?" Feeling relieved I said "yes I am". As the small talk continued around the corners and finally to the locker room. I found a locker to house my things. Went to use the restroom and it was a disgrace. I had to force myself to see beyond the appearance of the toilet area and use the restroom. After washing my hands I figured, I'm not going to workout here but let me still give it a try. Now on the hunt for the steam or sauna room, I followed the signs to the pool. Just assuming that since I didn't see either in the locker room that it will be in the pool area. I Opened the door to the pool area and asked the lifeguard. Is the sauna or steam room here? The lifeguard responded "can't hear you" (I'm thinking let's take the other airpod out your ear so you can hear me) then I repeated myself. He says yes and motioned over to the corner. I saw what looked like a shack or some sort. Now granted I haven't seen saunas without it being attached to something, so it was a stand alone sauna and wanted no parts of it. Completely frustrated by the services, I walked back to the front. Asked an obvious question but wanted to make sure. I asked the guest services ``do y'all just have a sauna?" Guest services "yea" and clearly annoyed with me. I peeped in the weight area and saw it was packed and proceeded to my car. I ended up at Greenbrier YMCA and had a great workout. Moral of my story I can't wait for my home gym pool area to open back up. Never visiting Mt. Trashmore YMCA anymore.

A great gym and family center! Rhe cardio equipment is in good order and the weight equipment is good. A lot of friendly people bother employees and patrons which cultivates a great experience. Best part…parents night out! 3 hrs of free daycare to go on a date! That in itself is worth the membership!

Incredibly rude, me and my wife easily pay 80 plus to enjoy a nice small gym close to our house. However when i come before closing we get harassed by a specific employee to leave. I understand the rule states that my 24 hour pass only applies to the one person but this is honestly ridiculous. This is supposed to be a community center, but there is no sense of that.
My wife is being forced to wait outside for me even though we both pay for this place. Go ahead and try to milk 5 extra dollars out of us. She tried to express that if she left us there she will get into trouble. okay sure why don't you tell that to everyone else who walks in right after you leave.
I could let in anybody i wanted however my wife with a membership isn't allowed to stay 1 minute after closing.
Classic case of manager complex, i like this place and haven't had many problems other than blatant sanitary issues like machines being dirty and weights being left all over the place and disorderly but I enjoy the small comfy atmosphere i can't get at a large commercial gym. but after this i think ill leave to pay CONSIDERABLY less where 24 is included and not get harassed by staff.

Listening to coworkers discuss the improvements needed at this location has changed my mind about membership. How is the gym area not already cleaned for morning members? The locker rooms? The pool? I've also read several reviews with the SAME complaints. Sanitation is important! This may not be a renovated site, but you guys need to make it presentable. I pass this YMCA daily and planned to join after my current membership expires. Especially as it's near Mt Trashmore! Come on. Do better!

I brought my babies here for Spring Break. Today was their first day. My son was welcomed with ball to the nose and bruise leg. Ironically, I wasn't informed until my child told me when I got home. Why wasn't I notified; was their an incident report; was the other child reprimanded for their behavior according to your conduct policy and were their parents notified? I was also informed by my son, that he didn't recieve care after his nose started to bleed from the ball to the face. He said an adult that he thought was the manager looked at him bleeding and stood back. I am mortified by this lack of care my child recieved.

So I took a tour at this location not to long ago, the woman who took me on the tour was super nice, don’t get me wrong… but if you are going to work at a gym shouldn’t you know basic answers to basic questions? I asked if they had free weights in the gym or was it just smith machines and strength equipment and she looks at me and goes “girl I don’t know” then laughs.. again she was super sweet but it was just annoying. The pool looked really dirty, the sauna they have there was super small and from other reviews I see that it is jot available most of the time anyways. Locker rooms were not that great.
I ended up signing up at Onelife, their front desk employees had a sense of how everything worked there and they had everything I was looking for there and it was a lot cleaner then the YMCA

I give it 3 stars simply because the daycare workers are amazing, specifically Audrey, Abigail, and Christina, but that’s about it. My issue is with the director, Missy. She treats the staff like absolute trash. She’s made blatant racist remarks within ear shot of guests. She even made a comment on how she could have her husband background search people because he’s a cop (even though that is illegal). Her attitude toward guests is very unwelcoming. You can tell a change in the staff’s whole demeanor when she’s there. During my personal interaction with her she was very cold and rude. Almost like helping a guest was a bother or inconvenience for her. I’m really not sure why someone would take a job they are very clearly miserable at but I can assure you SHE is the main reason for this locations downfall.

I have had horrible experiences at this Y within the last 2 weeks. I was told the sauna closes at 8:45 - 15 minutes before the facility closes. Then, on my next visit, I was told it closes at 8:30 when no one is in the pool even if the sauna is in use - I adjusted my schedule to accommodate their changing hours. And now today, I was told they were closing at 8:15 because the pool was closing for "special circumstances." There is zero consistency with their hours and it is clear the hours are based on the life guards that are always trying to leave early if not enough people/no one is in the pool; therefore kicking anyone in the sauna out. They need to hire people who are willing to work their entire shift and not always trying to leave early and inconvenience members who are paying a lot of money for their monthly membership. I regularly visit the Hilltop and Princess Anne YMCA and never encounter these issues. So my question is, why is this such an issue at Mt. Trashmore?
P.S. Reading other reviews about this location, I am clearly not the only one who has experienced this issue and you should be well aware of it by seeing the multiple one-star reviews that have been left also in reference to this problem.

This place had some struggles for awhile. I guess because of staffing shortages and other issues. It's getting better though. I can tell. I've met the area leadership person and it seems they care about the members and making sure they get quality attention when they're on the premises.

This is the first time that I’ve ever left a review for anything. It is very important that you always visit a facility before signing up. The facility is UNSAFE and UNSANITARY. I walked into the Trashmore YMCA and I informed the front desk person that I signed up online. I had a huge backpack and he didn’t even ask me for ID. I’ve never been in the facility before and he took me directly to the pool without asking any questions. When I entered the ladies locker room, the smell of urine slapped me in the face. There’s only one toilet in the entire ladies locker room. Why does the entire room smell like urine. Nobody has cleaned that place in years. I tried to take a shower before getting in the pool. I waited 15 minutes and the water did not get warm at all. The water was ice cold. I entered the pool area and I was afraid to takeoff my flip-flops because the floor was so filthy. Worst experience in a gym ever. If you cannot afford to hire a cleaning crew then shut the place down. There are other facilities close by. The pool was not very clean either.

When you come to this facility twice during the weekday, 3 weeks apart, and their indoor pool and sauna is closed, something is definitely wrong. So disappointing, when it used to be the best facility pre-COVID. Now, post-COVID, their hours are shorter on the weekend, wow, they ought to do something to fix this. I've been a member since 2012, paying for family membership, but YMCA Hampton Roads, pls get your act together. I give them a month, I am pulling out!!! Hope you're even thinking about fixing this😥😧😮!!! By the way, I came today, July 12, 2022 at approximately 5 pm . Guess what?! The water dispenser at the main gym is broke. 😱 A sign is posted, that it is out of order. For how many days now? So, I rest my case. You be the judge...

Outdoor pool review
My family has just started using The Y and this is our closest location. We have only utilized the outdoor pool so far and are very happy. Danielle is the lifeguard we see most often and she is amazing! Only down side is the splash area isn't always working. The aquatic's director said that it is undergoing repairs but the time frame is up to the mechanics working on it. Unfortunate but I'd rather it be down now and fixed correctly.
5 stars for the lifeguards but 4 star for the facility at this time.

I am beyond disappointed in the level of service my family and I have received over the duration of our family membership. You are way overpriced and are not as family friendly as you lead people to believe. For instance, your pool accessibility hours for families are ridiculous. Hire some more lifeguards so that families can use the pools, and they aren't so dedicated to lap swim. Today was an especially poor experience. The outside pool at Mt. Trashmore was advertised as "Family Open Swim (Baby pool/splash pad closed)" from 12:15 pm - 5:00 pm. We arrived at 3:45 pm to use the pool, and the lifeguards had the entire pool marked off with lane markers so that 90% of the area was all lanes. The only part that was open was the shallow end which was marked off, and had roughly 10-15 people crammed in like sardines. There were only two people swimming in the lanes. I asked one of the lifeguards politely if my family and I could use one of that lanes which wasn't being utilized, and after talking back and forth with another lifeguard for an awkwardly long amount of time deliberating, they told me yes we could. One of my daughters was scared of the lane markers, so we ended up cramming into the tiny shallow end. As soon as we got there a new lifeguard walks up and tells the guy beside me that they are going to make everyone who hasn't "passed the swim test" to stay in the small shallow end. Again, the hours for the outdoor pool at Mt. Trashmore (on the YMCA website reads "Family Open Swim (Baby pool/splash pad closed)" from 12:15 pm - 5:00 pm. Lap reservations were supposed to end at 4 pm today. This is memorial day weekend and the pool was supposed to be opened to families, but instead a handful of inexperienced overzealous lifeguards thwarted attempts by your own paying members to use the pool. This was a complete failure and inexcusable. I am cancelling my membership.

So I spoke to a YMCA staff member this morning and she told me I could pay cash for my account. I get to the building they are not even equipped to pay cash I had to go to this location due to this was the location sponsoring my program. Jenna who claims she is the regional manager was very nasty and rude and instead of me paying a pro rated amount they where asking me to pay way more because they did not money to give me back after the fact I called before I came. She was rude and nonchalant and not willing to help. I have to sign up at this location but I would not ever go to this location. For the record there is a employee at the front desk who acts as if he doesn’t know what to do he asked me how to spell my name four times.

The pool looks like it has not been cleaned in years. Is brown at the bottom of the pool in the spill over siding. The water seemed like it needed more chlorine. The lockerooms should be cleaned more often during the pandemic there was lots of hair and other debris on the floor and my husband said the men's locker room smells of urine. Given that people pay for these memberships the cleanliness and experience should be better. I will not be using the indoor facility again.

After a great experience as a YMCA member in New York City years ago & the fact that a family member is an executive for the Y, I definitely wanted to join here in Virginia Beach. Though I really liked this YMCA, especially the movie theater room, the front desk staff was what ruined it all for me. Not very good customer service at all. They were unenthused & there seemed to be some serious miscommunication between them about certain membership rules & guidelines because 1 person would tell me 1 thing & the next would tell me something totally different. All within a few days of attending the gym. Each day that we left, we shook our heads at the weird vibes we got from the front desk & how uncomfortable they made us feel. I wasn’t sure what the issue was, whether they just didn’t like their jobs and/or if it was the fact we were using the free week/tryout pass first (though I initially called & asked how much a day pass would be, was given a price & I was offered a free week instead by someone else when I got there) & they would’ve preferred us to immediately sign up for a membership. I don’t know, but after a final very uncomfortable interaction w/ 1 of the staff members on Memorial Day around 4:20pm when I simply asked the (Caucasian w/ a ponytail) woman at the front desk for my phone back that I oddly had to exchange for a basketball, she rudely told me to get my phone myself from behind the desk (what the heck?) as she continued her chatting w/ some guy & around that same time seeing another staff member unprofessionally walking around w/ no shoes on, we had had enough & decided to immediately leave & never go back. Sucks because this location was really my style, small w/ pretty decent equipment & I wanted to join because of the YMCA name, but the front desk staff members were just terrible. Thank goodness something told me not to rush into a membership here & to feel out the place first before I make a membership commitment. I will say, the cleaning staff was very friendly & so was the slim lady w/ the blonde hair, not sure of her name, but she worked in the cardio room at the desk. Your front desk staff needs customer service training because clearly they’re unaware that simply being friendly & enthused is a huge part of their job.

The Mount Trashmore Family YMCA of Virginia Beach, Virginia is a great YMCA that gave me a great workout experience, and exceeded my expectations. Here's why I liked the Mount Trashmore Family YMCA:
Mount Trashmore Family YMCA has such a large variety of equipment for whatever type of exercise you might be looking for. For example, it doesn't matter if you're into cardio, weightlifting, swimming, spinning, running, or cross-fit because there's something for everyone. Not only does the Mount Trashmore Family YMCA have a variety of equipment, but it's also the newest equipment on the market. This is not only the latest and greatest equipment (state of the art), but it's also laid out perfectly throughout the Mount Trashmore Family YMCA. I have been to several other YMCAs, nonetheless, none compare to the Mount Trashmore Family YMCA. No other training facilities or gyms can compete with the Mount Trashmore Family YMCAs equipment, equipment cleanliness, employee professionalism, facility cleanliness, or overall facility as a whole.
Also, all employees at Mount Trashmore Family YMCA are prompt, professional, courteous, and tactful. Every employee at the Mount Trashmore Family YMCA went above and beyond for me. Mount Trashmore Family YMCA of Virginia Beach, Virginia has a welcoming atmosphere that leaves the customer wanting to come back time and time again.
The overall cleanliness of the Mount Trashmore Family YMCA is above average from that of other YMCAs I have been to as well.
Finally, Mount Trashmore Family YMCA is easy to find, and also has accessible parking.

This has to be the BEST YMCA I've ever been to. I never go to a different Y. closer to my location. My daughter is wanting to take elliptical lessons, however, I totally could have signed her up at our closest Y., but instead decided to sign her up at Mt. Trashmore's Y., because it's my choice as her parent. The ellipticals are beyond amazing in appearance. They're always clean, but with a hint of sweat residue (to be expected). My daughter won't allow herself to sweat, due to her phobia, but she doesn't mind if the ellipticals occasionally have some remnants of other member's sweat - I mean, sweating IS only natural.
The handle bars have great grip. The pedals move in fluid motion. The machines are just her size. She couldn't be happier with their ellipticals! Unrelated: She told me a week ago she even thinks the layout of the facility is fabulous! Their showers/locker rooms are literally in THE MOST OPTIMAL LOCATION, IN RELATION TO THE ENTRANCE, AS POSSIBLE. At the Y. I've once been to nearest to me, there were only elderly people using their ellipticals (or possibly taking the elliptical lessons, perhaps). At THIS Y., there were young adults, and teenagers my daughter's age all using the ellipticals! Get your cardio on, youngsters... My daughter and I will ALWAYS come be coming to the Mt. Trashmore YMCA!

Good facilities, if you want to have selective hours you can use the pool. Tides swim team has had indoor pool completely taken up on multiple occasions. Not sure why they take priority over paying members on lanes or why they are not restricted to a couple of lanes so members can come in before work and exercise.
They said someone woukd contact me a week ago, no one has yet to date. 4-28-2018

Staff are great. Love the stay and play. The pool could be cleaned more often. The lip around the under edge where the water spills into is pretty dark and nasty and there's always junk on the bottom of pool. Other then that I also love the theater work out room.

My son went to the YMCA summer camp for several seasons. He loved attending the camp classes there and as a handicapped individual the property is extremely accessible to me. It is all one level and doorways are wide enough to accommodate wheelchairs as well as strollers. The staff is very helpful and accommodating and understanding of special needs that need to be met with various persons. I would highly recommend trying a want to see a YMCA membership or even just to visit.

This has to be the WORST YMCA I've ever been too. I usually go to a different Y closer to where I live. My son is taking school age swim lessons however I waited too late in signing him up for the next session so I had to go to the only Y that had space available...Mt Trashmore. The indoor pool at this Y looks like trash. The pool is filthy...it looks like it has never been cleaned. The railings and stairs in the pool are very rusty and looks unsafe. The area near the skylights over the pool have rust and chipped paint. The door handles leading back to the main area of the Y is covered with what looks like green rust. The locker room really shocked me. Unlike the Y I normally go to where the showers are in the back and lockers are located as soon as you walk in...well at Mt Trashmore the showers are located as soon as you walk in and the lockers are in the back. Even the life guards seem very relaxed. At the Y I normally go to kids under age 13 aren't allowed in the pool w/o a parent or guardian if they haven't passed the swim test and earned a green necklace. I've noticed lots of kids under the age of 13 in the pool (indoors and out) without a parent or guardian and no green necklace. I can't wait til my son's swim lessons are over...I can't see myself coming back to this Y.

Love the YMCAs of South Hampton Roads. This one has a great program/play area for the young children (2-5 years old) for Parents Night Outs.

We've been members of the Y and particularily coming to the Mt. Trashmore facility for almost two years now. I highly recommend it to anyone. We initially decided to check out the Y because of the child care. Not many gyms in Hampton Roads have child care included in the membership.
That said, the staff in the Stay and Play area are amazing. The facility for the children is so great. Even while my wife and I are working out, I know that they are taken care of and even have acitivities that get them moving. It's not a simply babysitting service. It's an exceptional program that embodies the Spirit, Mind, and Body approach.
As for my wife and I, we have a blast! This facility has a Cardio Theatre that we frequent. It's just that. A room full of cardio equipment situated so that everyone is in view of the big screen playing movies all day long.
FITQUEST. If you have never been trained on how to effectively use a gym, or had a personal trainer, that's what you get with this. Everyday we go in, we have a new workout ready to go. What's best is that it is tailored to each individual. No one size fits all workouts here.
The Staff. They are simply great people. They actually care about the health and welness of the patrons. Not just the money that is flowing in every month.
Programs. There are more programs that I have time for. They truly have something for everyone. The swimming classes(extra cost) are great. For my now 4 year old, we have been incredibly pleased. The patience and ability to teach these young swimmers is incredible.
If you are looking for a place to work out, check out the Y, especially the Mt. Trashmore Y.
