As someone who was terrified of working out, and workout classes more-so, I cannot say enough good things about this studio. Tried this on a desperate whim ~3 years ago and today cannot imagine not having it in my life!
The coaches are helpful and encouraging, but still let you go at your own pace/comfort level. Shoutout especially to Tony who is always a ray of sunshine, especially after a tough day at work (or a hangover).
If youβre intimidated of trying this place, donβt be! You rarely have to talk or interact with anyone if you donβt want to. Everyoneβs there just putting the work in.
Thanks OT Ballston!

I am extremely disappointed with my recent experience trying to cancel my gym membership. I have been a loyal member for years, I even continued to pay my membership during Covid and years after without setting a foot into the gym due to back health issues. Unfortunately, the process to cancel has been nothing short of a nightmare. First I called months ago and the person I spoke with said that I had to go IN PERSON to sign which did not make any sense but I had to travel and could not make it. Today I called to cancel again, the representative who I spoke with, Kiesha (manager) was extremely rude and said that since it is not "30 days", which would have been if I called on the 2nd which is 4 days after, that there will be an additional 30-day period before the cancellation could take effect. This means I was forced to pay for another month of membership that I could not use. When I expressed my frustration, Kiesha the manager was dismissive and offered no solutions of accommodations for a member who paid membership for at least 3 years without one single class!
The lack of support and understanding is appalling, and the cancelation process is unnecessarily burdensome and insensitive.

OTF Ballston has been a gamechanger - my husband and I go almost daily. With 3 boys, it has kept us motivated and in shape to keep up with our kids. We use it as a stress release from both our jobs and our lives...and sometimes as marriage therapy! We love the constant motivation from coaches, the great music and community environment. We've been members since 2015 or 2016 and have cancelled plans to make sure we can make it to a class. With busy lives, we love that we can get a great workout in only an hour - it's the perfect solution to keep our fitness goals in check!

For six years, Orangetheory Ballston has been my go-to fitness center. The convenience of its location combined with the consistently high-quality workouts has made it an essential part of my routine.
As someone preparing for regular military PT tests, fitness is non-negotiable, and Orangetheory has been instrumental in helping me maintain the required fitness levels. I attend classes about 4 times a week.
The coaches are fantastic - supportive, knowledgeable, and push you to excel without making it overly daunting. There's a welcoming vibe that motivates everyone, regardless of their fitness level.
The staff keeps the place clean, and the equipment is top-of-the-line, ensuring a comfortable and effective workout experience.

I called to cancel my membership. They said a manager would send me the info to cancel. Never happened.
Months later, I notice my partner and I are still getting charged monthly. I call again and ask how can I cancel. They say theyβll leave a note for a manger. I inform them thatβs what happened last time and no one ever followed up. They said theyβd leave a priority note for a manager this time.
I asked, what happens next. They said the manager will call me Monday and understand why I want to cancel. I told them this feel harder than it needs to be.
I go in person and get more run around. I look online and find a cancellation link that is very hard to find and complete it.
Iβm cancelling because I found a different workout routine I enjoy. But Iβll never consider going back after this experience. They made it so hard to leave. I wonβt go back.

I am a founding member who started going on July 6, 2015, so going on 8 years now and I still love it. Every class is different, the instructors have changed over the years, but overall I've liked all of them although I do miss some of the OGs. I've gone through periods where I'm there almost every day and then sometimes I'll go a few times a week, but no matter what I know I'll get a good workout. The coaches push you to do your best, but your best on Monday might be different than it is on Wednesday, and that's ok, and no one cares. There are always different options to scale up or scale back. They added the strength classes back which is nice for getting some additional lifting in. I've also gone to classes all over the country and having that option in most places I've been to has been great.

When I first moved into my apartment, I wanted to get back into shape, and there were so many options to choose from in Ballston. I decided to try out OTF with a friend but I was really nervous for the first class because I hadnβt been to the gym in a while and i heard OTF was intense..now that I am 4-5 months in, Iβm so glad that I decided to try it out. They have great monthly challenges that really push you (never thought i would do a 5K let alone the dri-tri!)I love to just turn my phone off, turn my brain off, and get my workout on.

Iβm a brand new mom who was really looking forward to working out today! I booked the Clarendon 6:30 class only to find out that the class was cancelled due to a power outage. I raced over to the Ballston location to see if I could get into their 6:30 class, which was maybe half full. I walked in at 6:35. I was told by a very unapologetic desk attendant that she could get in trouble for letting me into class after 5 minutes. This was literally as the clock struck 6:36. Iβve been an OTF member for almost 4 years. To be treated like this was really upsetting and really unkind. I wonβt be coming back.

6.24.20 EDIT: I wanted to provide an update regarding COVID-19 precautions. This studio is doing an excellent job; I felt completely safe working out here. We lined up outside, six feet apart with masks, down the street about five minutes before class. We were called forward one by one for a temperature check and verbal symptom questionnaire. Once passed, we went inside and received our station number. Each person had their own station that no one else was at the entire time; for example, I was station eight and, when we rotated from tread to rower, no one was at the tread I left. Instead of lockers, we received plastic baggies to store our loose items, which we kept with us as we rotated. Class size was greatly diminished (I think there were only sixteen of us, total), so that two or three stations were between each person. Classes are about fifteen minutes shorter to allow for cleaning and disenfecting between every class (we also received new wipes with each station rotation to clean them as we worked out). Trainers wear masks and goggles; masks while working out are optional (which is fine because of the distance being observed) but most of us wore them anyway. Overall, I'm extremely impressed with the hard work that is obviously going into making this studio a safe place to work out.
ORIGINAL POST: What sets OrangeTheory apart from other similar boutique fitness classes is that it focuses on heart health, stamina, and overall fitness instead of weight loss or achieving a certain body ideal. I think that this sets clients up for success in that it prepares us to maintain a healthy lifestyle for decades, instead of falling into a unhealthy cycle of weight loss and gain. OrangeTheory is really a lifestyle change, and the coaches make that change much more manageable and realistic than other studios, gyms, or programs.

The effectiveness. I immediately felt better and stronger. The support and encouragement is amazing. The energy and positive vibes are infectious. Staff is super informative and patient. Iβve had personal training before and it wasnβt nearly as enjoyable. I also didnβt learn anything from the 1:1 sessions in the past; pretty costly and lousy to have nothing to show for it if Iβm being candid. The entire setup for this intense circuit workout OTF designed is pretty genius!! Amber is incredible....what a fierce superstar!!!

The workout is good and hard and the coaches really do a great job. I knocked off two stars because: 1. Itβs so expensive. 2. They arenβt flexible at all, considering how much we pay. You canβt be more than 5 mins late, you canβt miss a class or you get charged (even if you call with a valid excuse or try to change times). 3. The girls who work at the front desk are fairly unfriendly. 4. Itβs so packed with people all the time and thereβs often a waitlist. 5. Definitely not an intimate gym where you can get to know other people (that might be a pro for some people haha)

I hadn't taken working out very seriously in 10 years - due to various health ailments that wouldn't allow me to maintain weight, and hip surgery two years ago. I joined OTF back in June and immediately fell in love, despite being incredibly out of shape! I originally started with the 8-classes a month package and switched to the unlimited package in July because I was addicted. I know try to go 3-4 times a week, and have already noticed significant change in my body! I love the way I'm feeling physically and emotionally!

Horrible experience! Disclaimer I will admit that I came in exactly at the 5 minute cutoff! However once in there it should not have been so unorganized! I was provided with a rower 5 card only for a young lady to already be on the rower. I say no biggie I'll go to another rower. Next it's time to go to the floor, I have never seen such unorganized tight floor stations at an OTF before. I say to myself my floor station should match with my rower well I had no clue where my floor station was and once I found it someone was there! The coach or lack of offered NO ASSISTANCE AT ALL!!! It was as though I didn't exist. However he was kindly able to assist other people. Something else I never experienced. I definitely felt discriminated against!! It was clear that I needed some assistance he didn't even attempt to assist me. This was by far THE WORST OTF experience I have ever encountered. I'm use to a supportive staff and coach. I was overwhelmed with anxiety, frustration and annoyance so I left. I would not recommend this location if you're close to the 5 minute rule and I definitely wouldn't recommend that coach if you're looking for guidance once in the class.

I'm all in on Orange Theory and have been going for nearly 2 years... I'm a runner but this workout challenges you in other ways beyond running with a strength, power and endurance mix. Each workout is different and the instructors push you to go beyond your self-perceived limits. The vibe, music and comradery in the studio are great and they have classes pretty much all day long to fit your schedule, plus there are multiple studios around Arlington for your convenience. I've gotten to know several of the coaches and they will give you tips on workout routines and other fitness areas if you ask. Going to these classes throughout the week gives me the energy as a business owner, father and husband to live my life to its fullest! Christian Spencer

This place is the not so hidden gem in personal fitness you've been hearing about. At first glance, Orangetheory Fitness (OTF) Ballston looks like any other fad workout studio. Trendy but nondescript name, signature color, and occasional stream of disciples entering and exiting at all hours of the day. Take a look inside and it does not take long to go through all the stages of OTF addiction.
Stage 1: Curiosity
Typically this stage takes place away from the studio. You hear from friends and coworkers about their fitness plan. They begin to use terms you do not understand like "push pace," "Tornado Tuesday," and "Red Zone." You would typically ignore such talk but they keep going back and it appears to be working for them. You tell yourself that one day you will check it out... not today though, maybe tomorrow, or next week. You eat a cookie and ponder the matter further.
Stage 2: Surprise
You've had it in your head to try OTF but only after you are fully aware of the brand do you notice... They're everywhere! You almost swear to yourself that OTF studio was a bank last week! That one was your dry cleaners just this morning! You half jokingly begin to wonder if your apartment will be replaced with a studio when you get home.
Stage 3: Gateway Workout
You finally decide to go get your first free workout. You're not sure what to expect as you walk in the door. The friendly person on the phone told you to bring water, a towel, and to arrive 30 minutes early. You wonder what kind of cult you've signed yourself up for. As you enter expecting everyone milling around to start chanting "One of us. One of us." You're greeted by a friendly member of the OTF Ballston staff - yes, they're even friendly at 4:30 in the morning with no coffee in sight - who has you fill out some non-binding safety paperwork and explains some of the once weird terms from Stage 1.
The staff creates a profile for you and they set you up with a heart rate monitor. This is when they explain why OTF works. The goal each workout is to spend at least 12 minutes with your heart rate at or above 84% of the max for those in your age and weight. Achieving that goal causes the "after-burn" which causes your body to continue to burn calories after class. It's like a bonus round on The Workout Is Right!
Before you know it you're walking into the studio! You have a card in hand telling you at which of the three areas of the studio you'll start: Treadmill, Rower, or Floor. Unlike most gyms, you're not surrounded by Gods descended to Earth to sneer at your lack of fitness. Instead you see folks at all stages of their fitness journey. You relax and think, "If they can do this then I certainly can." [Break: At this point the reviewer STRONGLY advises you avoid making Tuesday your first workout! If you catch a Tornado Tuesday you may crawl out of the studio to seek the mercy of whatever God you believe in and never return!].
If you're particularly lucky (again opinion on this one) you'll find yourself in the knowledgeable and motivating care of Coach Yardley, Coach Caroline, or Coach Amber! No worries if not, they are all exceptionally skilled at what they do and make sure that in a class of dozens YOU know where you are in the workout, and are getting the most and best out of the experience - with a great soundtrack to boot. Seriously, it's impressive how well they balance coaching, motivating, demonstrating, keeping time, and I SWEAR I saw one of them doing theoretical physics on a whiteboard during a class... it might have been a hallucination in the middle of a Tornado Tuesday [Seriously, just don't for your first class].
Stage 4: Addiction
You joined! You talk about your class and Splat Points - can't tell you everything - with coworkers. You travel and schedule workouts at other gyms that are clearly inferior to your home gym but its OTF so you enjoy it anyway! You recruit others to the faith by, with your language, and obvious increased fitness... sparking their curiosity.

This is my home studio. The classes are great and I liked it so much I increased my membership level from 8/month to unlimited. Classes are often full for this studio, but wait lists do move quickly. There is a bit more anonymity in this studio compared to others I have been to. You can easily disappear into your own workout, but there are also plenty of opportunities to connect with others if desired.

I always recommend OTF Ballston, specifically, to my friends. First, it is conveniently located: near the βmetro, bus stops, and between my job and my home. Second, the coaching is phenomenal; Tim and Caroline keep me going and do not allow me to give up on myself. Third, the desk staff is friendly without being overbearing, funny without being sarcastic or caustic, helpful without being obsequious. In the words of Goldilocks, they are just right! Coach Allie was without a doubt the best coach I've had at OTF! Her energy is so contagious & she's very motivating in several ways. 1) Her word choice is intentional & clear. 2) Her music is spot on, so perfect the entire class. 3) Her enthusiasm for leading the class is electric! I love a good HIIT workout and recently decided to try OTF to supplement my Beachbody/Insanity workouts. After only two weeks, I ended up getting an unlimited plan and am in the studio 5 days a week! The experience I've had with the team at OTF Ballston is second to none! The front desk staff is always friendly and assists with any questions I've had from scheduling classes to membership changes. The coaches genuinely care about the members in their classes. I really enjoy having a program that is constantly changing (intervals, reps, exercises) but that I can also rely on having certain aspects remain the same (treads, rowing, floor). Having a coach able to push me throughout the workout is another huge component for me. I really love going to Orange Theory Ballston. They have a spacious studio and the workout is perfect! I don't have to think about what to do next, the coaches just tell me. The coaches at Ballston are also really great, but my favorites are Grant, Josh, and Tim who always have awesome playlists and are super helpful throughout every session. Everyone knows that music can make or break a workout, so I definitely recommend any of these three. The whole staff in general are great, and while some people may intimidated by the large class sizes, the great thing is you don't really pay attention to anyone else. You're really only competing against your own heart rate so the class size has really never been an issue for me. The coaches are always very attentive too, even in the larger classes. I definitely recommend this workout and have referred several of my friends, and they love it too!

Professional and attentive staff with high energy trainers. This high intensity workout rotates you through sprint work (treadmill), rowing, and floor work (body and light weights). It's tough, but worth it. The heart rate monitor you wear provides helpful stats after the 55 min workout for those wanting to track their results. Reserve a spot ahead of time - it's a popular spot - and it's easy to see why.

Loved the atmosphere and feedback constantly provided by the heart rate monitor. And I felt great the entire rest of the day!! Love the music and great staff!! Very cool and the treadmills and rowers are really high end and highly responsive unlike the ones I've used in the gym

I absolutely love orange theory. I love that no two work outs are the same and that each day, my body is being pushed harder than I would push alone. I love that right when I can't take another step on the treadmill, we move to something else. I love Josh, Grant, Tim, shayna and Caroline. But mostly, i love that when I started at orange theory, I hadn't worked out for more than a few weeks at a time for the past 18 months because of a recurring back and knee injury. I come to OTF 4-5 times a week and Remain injury free. As I approach my 45th birthday, I am stronger and leaner than I have ever been.

It's a group exercise place. They have a bunch of machines: treadmills and rowing. The session is about one hour: half hour cardio and the rest is sort of a circuit training. You wear the heart monitor, which shows up on the screen so you can keep track of a heart rate and not over work.
The patrons are mostly women for some reason. The shower area is very small and uncomfortable. They put it just to say they have it. In reality you wouldn't want to use it. Basically, you don't change: just come in gym close.
The staff is friendly, but the sessions may have a lot of people attending so you won't have much attention from them.
I liked the athmosphere. Nobody bothers you, you're sort of on your own. No pressure, friendly, and not competitive.
