If I could give this golf course a ZERO I would. Played there 2 weeks ago on a Saturday and let me just say this...."DON'T PAY TO PLAY HERE!!!"
The tee boxes were garbage, never played a course that actually had fairway rough (as we called it), and the pace of play was the worst I've ever seen in the Northern VA area. The course ranger was actually part of the maintenance crew. And the golf carts are 1 break away of a lawsuit. Breaks didn't work and trying to cross the road was playing with your life.
If they are going to sell this place, then sell it, but don't charge almost $70 for this place. Once was a great place to play...now STAY AWAY!

Awful conditions - it’s sad what the owner of this course is doing. Intentionally keeping the conditions the worst in the area and over charging consumers. Course would be better served as a certified dog track. Pathetic

I haven’t played this course in over two years. I remember it as always being in good shape, well maintained and fun to play. Today I played it for $65 which included range balls and I was both dismayed and disappointed by the condition of the course. Not worth playing for half the price, maybe not even for free. The following were a disgrace, the tee boxes, the bunkers, the rough. Tee boxes were over grown, some covering the tee box markers , others bare or with patches of grass. Bunkers hard as a rock and it looked like they had never bent raked, Greens needed to be cut; forget about trying to gauge ball speed. The grass in the rough was so long and thick that you felt like you were in a cow pasture. I will never come back. No pride at all in maintaining this course.

Full price and the single worst condition course I’ve played in years. No effort to mow, most tee box’s are inoperable, cart paths are not drivable, carts are in terrible condition. No reason this couldn’t be a great course except for sheer incompetence at the helm.

Absolutely horrendous excuse for a golf course. Was charged $140 for two players and a glove after 545-6 to play 9 holes except they don’t offer 9 hole rates so that is their version of a “twilight” offer.
Not even gonna waste time on complaining about the conditions of the course the rest of the reviews on here tell you enough. Wouldn’t play here again if the course was FREE. Waste of time

This place was terrible, it had been a few days since it rained, but after playing 4 holes my feet were soaked! Everything was wet, almost all 18 holes, towards the end I had to play barefoot. The price for the experience was not worth it whatsoever. The layout of the holes were decent but the only memorable thing was the service, easy to check in and get what I needed.

This is what happens when developers buy a golf course. They've intentionally let the condition of the course degrade in order to ensure its lack of profitability, so that they can then turn around and say "OMG look we're losing money we really have to build houses here instead!!!". Total disgrace

Worst course ever. Tee boxes in shambles and full of crab grass and sand. Greens horrendous full of mud patches and super bumpy, Putting was pointless , 9 three putts. One green I had to skip because green was pretty much the rough. Run down course, wouldn’t play again. Deleting this score.

One of the Worst Courses in Northern Virginia
Reston National is by far one of the most poorly maintained golf courses I’ve played — especially given the high price point. The bunkers are a joke, with grass growing out of them like they haven’t been touched in weeks. The course overall feels neglected, with constant gnats swarming you the entire round. Bring bug spray — and expect to reapply it four or five times just to stay sane.
What really sets this place apart (in a bad way) is the constant interruption from kids running across the greens and fairways due to the nearby housing. It completely kills the atmosphere and makes it hard to focus on your game.
Save your money and play almost anywhere else. This course isn’t worth it.

Played this past Tuesday around 11:30. Paid $77 for 18 and a cart. This has to be the worst kept golf course in the state of Virginia. I’ve never seen tee boxes and greens look so bad. Whoever they are paying to be the greens keeper should be fired and banned from every golf course in the world. I’d like to think that the ridiculous cost would go towards hiring more help to fix the dumpster fire that is this golf course, but part of me believes that theres someone at the top who is pocketing the money and letting people be fooled to into thinking they are about to play Reston of the past. Gross, Negligent, and Embarrassing.

This course has so much potential, but the course conditions are terrible. From what I know, the owner bought it, and overpaid by a lot, a couple years ago to flip into apartments. However, the course isn’t zoned for housing and Reston isn’t budging. Imo, it seems they are either trying to make the course so crappy that it has to be turned into apartments or they are running out of money to maintain it.
We can only hope that Reston stays strong and doesn’t allow for rezoning and the owner has to sell taking a massive haircut 🤞

I really wanted to enjoy this course, but unfortunately, it fell far short of expectations. The tee boxes were in rough shape - overgrown with weeds and clearly neglected. The bunkers were equally disappointing, lacking any real maintenance. But the biggest letdown was the condition of the greens. Most were little more than patches of dirt and mud, with burnt grass scattered throughout - nearly unplayable. With so many better-maintained courses within 15 miles, I don’t see myself coming back here anytime soon.

If I could give this place 0 stars I would. On June 29th my boyfriend and I stopped at the gas station across the street from this golf course. As I’m getting into the passenger seat we heard a loud bang, a golf ball struck the passenger side mirror. We immediately grabbed the golf ball and went there to show them the damages. The employee gave us the contact information of the general manger. After contacting the general manager he claimed it wasn’t “his fault” and there was nothing they could do and to claim it on the insurance. The insurance will go up because he will now be considered a “high risk” driver and a deductible will need to be paid in order for the insurance to fix the damages. And the other option he gave us was to find the person that hit the golf ball and take it up with them. This company is not taking accountability for their lack of safety pro-cautions. There is no netting or fencing just golf balls flying into the street, houses, side walks and businesses. Even the general manger mentioned that this was a reoccurring problem and even his car window had broke before because of this. We asked if we needed a lawyer to handle this since they refuse to help us and the general manger said he would no longer speak to us since we “threatened” him with a lawyer. He refuses to give us corporates number or a higher ups number to get things figured out. This company is negligent and unsafe.

First time playing here. Staff were friendly, practice facilities were decent, pace for a Saturday was reasonable, and course layout is fine.
Unfortunately, the condition of the course with a price of $95 (for green fee plus cart) was really disappointing. The tee boxes and greens were beat up. Putting was a nightmare with numerous little pot holes to bump along and knock your ball off the line on its way to the hole. Greens are otherwise shaggy and slow. Bunkers had a bunch of rocks in them. Not sure if this is because it’s early in the season, or if it’s always like this, but it’s not a $95 course. Oh, and the people living around the course were walking up and down the cart paths like they’re at a park. Had to wait multiple times for them to clear before hitting tee shots. I would say this is a $60 course at best, and even at that price, I don’t think I’ll be playing here again.

The course itself is nice. But nothing else about the experience is worth it. During the main golf season, it is $100 for a tee time but you will be on the course for 5+ hours. There’s no enforcement of pace of play despite the hefty fees. A hot dog in a stale bun was $8.50. It’s very expensive for a very poor experience. You are better off municipal courses for far less money.

Here’s the truth. The course should be embarrassed to charge $74 to play there any day of the week. Let alone a Tuesday at noon. The worst course I’ve played this year. I’ve only ever played one worse course. I was not familiar with this course and brought clients here. I spent most of the time apologizing for how poorly the course was maintained. This course was in the worst shapeI’ve ever seen. Fairways clearly haven’t been mowed in over a week (I don’t buy the rain excuse), numerous patches of fairway were also dead or overtaken by some kind of fungus. Rough probably hadn’t been cut in 2 weeks, and the portions of rough that had been mowed were not raked. Windrows EVERYWHERE.
I’ll partially excuse RN management on the greens, as my main complaint with them is players not repairing their ball marks. Dozens and dozens of dead ball marks in every green. Golfers should be ashamed of themselves.
Last complaint I have about this place is the scramble they just hosted (which I played in). $400 per team for 18 holes, food, raffles and prizes. That’s all fun and stuff, but someone thought it would be a good idea to stack 42 TEAMS in this 18 hole course. Because of that boneheaded move, our round took 5 hours and 15 minutes. For a scramble.
I will never play this course again.

I played here maybe 5 yrs ago and loved it. Popped up to DC from Florida today and was looking forward to playing Reston National again.
Wow! What a disappointment. Tee boxes are either patches of long grass or patches of dirt. Fairways have been mowed to what would be first cut of rough on a legitimate golf course. Rough is just neglected grass. Watch your ball roll off the fairway and it will still be tough to find. Not a strategic length....just neglected
Greens are fury with acceptable pace but there are ball marks, scrape marks, and glumps of cut grass blocking your roll to the hole.
This is a rip off from a commercial perspective. From a golf perspective, this course is disrespectful to golfers and the game of golf.

This is by far one of the WORST courses in the DMV area. I have played here twice and have NEVER made it past the 14th hole because of the incredibly slow pace of play. 2.5+ hours for 7 holes is ridiculous! I called the club house to inquire if there was a ranger and the answer was "no". Club house folks didn't really seem to care since they already had your green fee...which is 30-40% higher than what it really should be. The course is not challenging and it is in very fair shape at best. You are better off at another course that is prettier, properly maintained and managed and fosters an efficient pace of play

This course is not worth ($75) playing. There is no excuse for the condition. Don’t waste your time and money. Round took almost 5 hours and the lack of doing the simplest thing - mowing the grass - tells you that the owners don’t care about this place. Fairways 1/10, bunkers 6/10, greens 2/10, rough 1/10, price 1/10.

Gave the course another chance, hoping the conditions would improve since the last time I played here… I was very wrong. This genuinely may be the worst kept course I have ever played at. The fairways consist of 5 to 6 inch grass with the rough being even longer, the tee boxes are essentially just mud and completely torn up, the greens are extremely slow and you feel like you have to hammer putts to get anywhere, and there are craters in the grass all over the course. This course is in horrible condition and is not worth the $80 they will charge you. You should avoid this course at all costs. It is the definition of a dog track.

Played the weekend of 9/14. It’s been a few years since I have played Reston. Sadly,
while they have upgraded the clubhouse and practice area, the course itself was the worst I have seen it. Burnt out fairways and rough with many weeds and the greens were slow and shaggy. Understand this has been a brutal summer with drought and heat but other public courses in the area have managed to handle it courses such as Algonkian, Herndon, Stonewall Club have been in really good shape so it can be done if ownership/management is willing to commit to providing their customers with a good experience and customer service.

If I could give them a zero star I would. You pay for 18 holes with a cart and you get rained out. You go and get your rain check and instead of getting 9 holes to finish your round they give you a rain check for a dollar amount that doesn't even cover 9 holes let alone with a cart and expect you to pay more money for something that you already paid for. This is thievery and a joke go to any other course and you get a rain check for 18 or 9 holes simple and easy.
Tee boxes in terrible shape most are just sand, fairways in terrible shape, bunkers are terrible shape, rough looks like it hasn't been mowed, for the price you pay they don't maintain it or even care. Pace is so slow it took over 3 hours for 9 holes. I could have played Herndon for less money and better conditions and gotten my rain check to actually finish 18. I do not recommend you go to this course everything is so overpriced that it isn't even worth it.

Great course layout. They came down on their prices to be in line with other courses in the area which is why I started coming back here. Unfortunately, I can't return here until they fix the pace of play. I've played 2 of the last 3 weekends and each round has been a 5 hour pace of play. Tee times need to be spaced at least 12 minutes apart to ensure a good golfer experience. It's ridiculous to stack this many people on top of each other. We're waiting 5 minutes on the tee box every hole, and I see a lot of other groups of golfers very frustrated about how the tee times are packed in as well. That's just poor tee time management and is something that could easily be fixed. It's just not fun to golf like this. Once they fix the weekend pace of play, I'll definitely be back.

The neighbors are EVERYWHERE! I am not exaggerating.
There were 3 people that crossed the fairways with dogs, one of which was pooping on the course.
There was a man who stood in the bushes 20yards forward of the tee box on 15; we didn't see him until our second tee'd off. Even after we asked if he was trying to cross he said no and just lurked in the bushes. He then followed us up the hole.
There was a man with his toddler biking. They were on the cart path pin high on a 200yd par3 WELL within the path of a stray. Don't believe me? I got a picture after they biked past us on our approach to the green.
It seems like the neighbors want the course closed and are doing it on purpose. The course needs to manage it because it's horrible. Fence the entire course. It's only a matter of time before one catches a line drive. And it ruins the game.
Not to mention the cart they gave us kept giving a check engine light and had to be push started at one point.
The food cart drive by once when we were on hole 3 with a cooler tied to a normal cart. The round was over 5 hours. Two of the last holes look straight into the afternoon sun making it impossible to track your ball flight.
Not coming back until they figure out how to keep the neighbors out. Maybe not coming back even after that. Definitely the worst course I've played in MD or VA and I've played almost all of them.

TL;DR: poor course and tee box maintenance
February 2024
INFO:
~Range balls are extra charge
~Located inside a neighborhood/along side a main road (with no fences; so balls could potentially fly into the street
~Carts were nice with GPS screen included
~Coolers provided on the golf carts
~Cart/starter area was nice
~Practice putting area green was bumpy (see pic)
COURSE:
~No scenic holes/boring visually
~All tee boxes were terrible. Could not find a flat area/an area where the ball wasn't below or above my feet
~Tee box was bumpy due to all the divots
~Fairways were terribly maintained; bumpy (not only due to divots, but seems like the grass was diseased/patchy)
~Bunkers need a lot of work (can see the negligence)
~Greens were the same. So bumpy that your putt is hopping around like a bunny
~I saw a sign for one bathroom, but did not see a facility? (not sure if the portapotty was taken away or something)
~You come back to the club house at the turn, so you can grab a snack or drink
At first, I thought maybe the poor maintenance was due to the colder weather, but even in nicer weather, these conditions would not get any better without more effort put into their maintenance.
One of the worst (if not the worst) courses we've been to in the area.

Tee times are 10 minutes apart, which is problematic if you're playing with slower players...I thought industry standard is 12 to 15? We also kept getting notices in the golf cart that we are 23 minutes behind pace and need to play faster, yet we were on the tee box when the group in front of us was on the green. It took FIVE hours to play 18 holes, which is absurd.
Additionally, I bought two drinks at the clubhouse and was charged $9 each, yet when I bought two more from the roaming drink cart they were $6?
Beyond those two bugaboos, the course is very well designed and keeps you on your toes. The housing lining some of the property keeps you ego in check. Some of the tee boxes were completely destroyed, but the fairways, rough, and sand traps were well maintained. The greens aren't consistent in speed, but neither is my putting.
Definitely a little high price-wise per 18. I'd recommend Old Hickory or Penderbrook if you'd like a public course of a comparable quality but a lower cost.

probably great without all the leaves. for a $100 you would not expect to consistently lose balls just off the fairway. a leaf will affect the roll of a putt. the greens were bumpy. i like the layout of the course but at this time, its not worth the money.

Condition of course was not the greatest; lots of grass discoloration and divots. But the worst part about this place is the extremely rude staff. The gentleman who checked me in and rung me up for a round of 18 holes scolded me for bringing my own clubs, calling me an amateur and saying I clearly don't play golf much because, according to him, bringing my own clubs was an issue. I even confronted him about it, and told him that there's other (much nicer) courses I've played who don't care if I bring my own clubs. I told him I didn't appreciate how he spoke to me and he got very defensive, interrupting me and speaking in a very snarky and sarcastic tone. I will never come back to this place, and it was a waste of $82.

It's a beautiful course overall and the staff is very friendly and accommodating. There are parts of the course that are not very well maintained and despite the "golfers only access" signs pretty much everywhere, you get a bunch of people walking up and down the paths from the local community which is terribly frustrating. Pace of play is also definitely an issue. We were behind a group of 4 that couldn't care less that THREE parties of four were waiting behind them for the same hole. Took them each about 10 strokes on the par 3 hole.

I recently moved to the area and decided to pick up golf lessons to beat my friends. Took the back 9 lessons with Brett; had an excellent experience. He made the class fun and worth coming back. I had told him that my goal was to break 100 by the end of the summer and he would come up to me every time to check in on my progress. Very approachable and friendly. I accomplished my goal with the help of my instructor and consistently coming back to practice. I’ve played the course several times; not too challenging and decently maintained. My 5 stars really goes out to the staff for making my time at the course and practice range worth coming back every time. Thank you Reston National!!!

Got the membership here so got to say I’m well acquainted at this point. Great customer service. Driving range is great as well with distance signs and flags to aim at. There is a chipping area, putting area and a sand bunker to practice at. The course itself is maintained well. As VA gets a lot of rain, sometimes the bunkers are a little beat up but that’s anywhere you go here. Great golf course which has everything you need.

Do not go here! There are so many better options in the area including many municipal courses that are in better shape, have better facilities, and staff. First, the pricing here is very misleading. You can book a tee time online, and while I'm sure there's some fine print somewhere, the greens fees do not include a cart, so you'll be surprised when they add another $15 per golfer for the cart. And on that note, our cart barely ran, had clearly been rolled at some point as the top had a few broken spots that rattled the entire round, and mud stuck to the passenger side handle. In terms of conditions, the course is in decent shape, not great, but good. The facilities are OLD, and very run down, as mentioned in other reviews, no kitchen at this time. Pro Shop which I don't care much about is pretty sparce.
And finally, the staff. We didn't get a single greeting, smile, or welcome from anyone at the course. We had to approach the starter, who was on his phone, hidden under the starter table, the entire time we checked in and waited to start play. We had to ask the starter if we were up, and simply got a "yep", and back to his phone he went. Inside staff were no different.
As I said to start, DO NOT go here, it's just a terrible experience and total waste of money.

Was going to do 18 today but after a 3 hr front 9 with two calls to the pro shop about pace of play and them telling me the people in front aren’t slow. “They are just waiting for someone to join them” so they are slow and slowing down the pace of play. Let others play through might have been a good option. But neither of the times they told the group in front to do that. As well as just take drops out of the bunkers as they are all filled with rocks and pebbles unplayable bunkers, crab grass in a lot of fairways and some tee boxes. Might give it another shot but doubt we will as management probably doesn’t care

Completely overpriced for what you get. For $90 you are much better off going to other tracks in the area. I live in Reston and would like to hit 9 after work but no they insist you pay for a full 18 at that ridiculous price… most of what I saw in other reviews regarding shape and people walking their dogs is also accurate.

Avoid at all costs. 1. Way overpriced 2. Grass is far too long (you will lose your ball in the fairway) 3. Random people walk through the course 4. It is used for a kids camp 5. There is literally no one keeping pace. Only reason I gave two stars is for the potential. Oh and you will only get cold cuts at the turn. Lots to change in the operations. Fix it or sell it to someone who will.

Adult group instruction was a great experience. A good deal that includes 6 hours of lessons, three rounds of golf, and range discounts. Group size was small (me and two others), so I got lots of time with the instructor. Lessons well structured and I got a lot out of them.
Greens fees and range balls on the expensive side, but course is well maintained. Driving range is short, so irons only which is a bummer.

Called ahead before booking a tee time to ask about the greens since most courses in the area have aerated recently. Was told they were in perfect condition which was clearly a lie; there was no point in even trying to read the greens as the aeration holes would throw the ball off line anyway. Pace was always slow but seemed to be better the last few times until my last round. Front 9 was okay but the back took almost 3 hours.

Pros: great instructors, course layout/design
Cons: For prime hours you pay $90 for a $60 course, even in peak condition. I live in Reston and I love the course layout, and I’ll continue to play here occasionally for those reasons. However, the value is simply unjustified for the price. Take your $90 and go play Westfields or Stonewall.
Just played 18 holes twilight where I paid $50 for the tee time with an added $16 for the cart fee where you don’t see at most other courses. Then my cart broke down on 17 after puttering along for 16 holes (I’m lucky it was that late in the game) and I walk the rest of my round with my cart bag. Get to the pro shop and inform them, and instead of apologizing and at the very least refunding the cart fee, (for carts that are the worst in NOVA), one of the attendants suggested that i go back to the hole with another attendant to get the cart. I walked away and told them I should’ve gotten some sort of refund. Poor experience.

Just finished my first round. Course is in decent condition, but absolutely no rangers! Had to quit in the 17th hole due to slow play. Waited at every single hole for players in front to hit, find balls, absolutely miserable if you like to play in 4 to 4.5 hours. Left after 5.5 hours after finishing 17, just too long. The greens and the bunkers are in terrible shape. The greens are bumpy with at least two types of grass growing at different rates and thickness. About half the bunkers have been
fixed but the others have no sand. I posted this review a few weeks ago and it's not showing up so I'm reposting it.
This is an old review under previous management.
After meeting with the general manager Scott last week I wanted to update my review and tell everyone about the great job the entire staff at Reston National has done in addressing the issue with the kids camp. I've played 3 times since the incident listed below and have had no interruptions in play by the camp. Thank you Scott and Shaun for the changes you have made that have restored my loyalty in Reston National. I also want to thank all of the staff at Reston National for all of the work you do that has produced such great golf experiences over the years! Dan and the food and beverage team have always taken great care of me and Jake and his groundskeepers have kept the course in the best shape in years.
I've been a member at reston national for over 15 years and today will be the last time I play there. The course is in great shape, except for a few bunkers and that is why I'm giving it 1 stars instead of 0! The kids camp is a disaster for anyone trying to enjoy a round of golf between 11am and 4pm! We make our tee times to go out before the camp and in the middle of the front nine they come rolling out disturbing people as they are hitting shots and then insert their groups in between other groups on the same hole! They send the kids out in large groups supervised by teenagers who are extremely rude to the paying customers and completely interfere with players who are already on the course. Then they back up the course that already has a full tee sheet! I talked to the Manager Scott and the Director of the kids camp Shaun and they are more concerned about the camp than the other paying customers! I've never been at a golf course that cares less about their paying customers than reston national! Go anywhere else to play golf at least until school starts!

June 2021 update:
I recently played Reston National and the condition of the course is excellent. The new owners have made substantial improvements in the course and facilities, the driving range and the bunkers. A few of the bunkers still have drainage issues as the crews work through restoring the bunkers. The biggest improvement is the PGA-quality sand. That's a big step up from the "playground" sand that many courses use.
The pro shop and restaurant are currently being renovated, I expect the improvements will be substantial.
Also, the staff is more visible and much more accommodating and friendly then in the past.
Even though I belong to another course and can play for "free", I now try to play Reston several times a month. It's a fun course to play.
Old review: They've really let the course go. Crabgrass everywhere including the greens. Not a lot of real grass anywhere except the rough. The "sand" traps are clay with a thin coating of dirt. It's amazing how quickly the new management has let the course go. The only good news is that you can walk on any time, most folks have given up on it.

The greens are horrendous and most of the tee boxes were more sand than grass. They charge $89 to play and I contemplated leaving after the second hole and trying to go elsewhere. I've played Reston National years ago and I don't remember it being so poorly maintained. The layout of the course is moderately challenging and fun, hence the two stars. There are many better courses for the same, or cheaper prices; try getting tee times there and use reston as a last resort.

Pros
- Close to DC
- Some nicely laid out holes
- Greens are slow but in nice shape
Cons
- Woeful condition fairways, rough and tee boxes
- Slow 5hr rounds with zero policing by marshals
- The 6th is an absolute abortion of a hole; 200 yards carry with a pot bunker guarding the front with woods behind it at 230? That ain’t fun.
There’s far better value for your ~$80 out there.

Been playing this track for a few years now, never even crossed my mind to write a review on a public course but finally decided to throw one up after the experience I had just on the range with the tool of a pro they hired. First, this track should be no where north of $75 to play... and in the current state even a $45 round would be too much. When you're one of the only public courses open in nova I guess you can get away with it... pre-COVID the slowest rounds I've ever experienced... condition's average at best... 2 stars because the short game area is the only convenient thing. Not worth going into the incident on the range, would just think that you'd be happy to see all 30 bays filled... but then again coaching 7 year olds all day explains why you'd take it out on some just trying to hit a few balls in an pandemic...

Reston is a fine, old school course. At various times in the past it was in less than stellar shape, but under the new groundskeeper Jake's stewardship it is now a joy to play. The greens and tees are wonderful, the fairways very good considering the amount of play this course gets. The people that work there from the starters, to the pro shop personel, to the snack bar attendants are friendly and always willing to try to make your golf experience pleasent. This, I believe, comes from the current manager Scott. The boss sets the tone, and Scott has the whole operation working as well as can be expected. Yes, sometimes the rounds last too long, but in my experience that is more about lousy play by some of the golfers than anything the course management is doing. If you haven't played this course in awhile, come back out, I think you will be pleasantly suprised.

Great course with very courteous/professional staff. Although I am not a member, this is my "go to" course when I want to get out. Their website makes it easy to set up a tee time online, and because I am typically a single, I can select from a number of tee times displaying groups of three players or less. You will want to download their app on your phone, which enables you to get worthwhile freebies and discounts, even if you only go once. Carts have built-in GPS for accurate distance to greens. This course sits nestled in some trees, so having some insect repellent on hand is recommended. Great hotdogs and sandwiches in the pro shop to grab prior, on the turn or post round. Course is in great shape as of this review... as it typically is. Nothing negative to say about the course. Give it a go... you will have zero regrets.
