Over $100 to start a membership. I’ve been working out for 15 years and never have heard of such a thing

Just want to preface this by saying that I'm a small business owner and realize how much of an impact reviews have on a customer's choice to spend their money somewhere. I want to clarify that a one star review does not in anyway reflect my rating of the actual gym (as I was not able to work out here) but instead a poor interaction with a staff member.
I finally bit the bullet and took the 40 min drive to visit this gym, hoping to try it out on a daypass and hopefully sign up after my workout if I liked it. Staffed hours are listed as 8am-1pm on the Tues I visited. I arrived around 8:15am. The door was locked. Called. No answer. Stood around outside until a member let me in, saying that someone would be in shortly. Sat down in the lobby to wait because I didn't want to touch any equipment before I'd paid and signed paperwork. A staff member came in about 15 mins later. I walked up, told her that someone had let me in, and asked for a daypass. She said "I don't open until 9 today." That was it. Standing behind the front desk, she refused to help me until "she opened" at 9. I decided not to wait around for 30 more mins.
All I can say is, the way someone treats a potential customer really speaks volumes about how little pride they have in their own business. Seemed like a cool gym. Shame I won't ever find out.

Clean, well-organized and appointed locally-owned gym offering day passes (and other short/long-term variations) for Colonial Beach residents & all seasonal visitors! 🏋️♀️ 🏃♂️ 🤸🏼♀️🧘🏽♀️
Expansive weightlifting options, solid cardio, and stretching areas. Personal trainers available for scheduling, also.
Go ahead… bust up that heavy sweat & sweet workout! It’s time to get yourself totally SWOLE before hitting the beach! 🏖️
Peace out, yo!✌️😎

The lady in charge that day seemed to be very disinterested in my inquiry and was more concerned about leaving at 1:00 pm. I've worked out at gyms since 25 years old, I was seriously turned off by her work/client relation. She gave me the impression she didn't need my business. That's plain arrogant to me. I was very disappointed.

The best business in CBVA! This gym has all of the equipment you need, and an atmosphere that cannot be beat. The staff members are friendly and professional. The facility is extremely clean, and bright. I train with the owner there twice a week, and she has taken my strength and endurance to a whole new level. As a member, the 24/7 access is very convenient. Well worth every penny spent.

I love my hometown gym. The atmosphere is very welcoming no matter your age, size or shape. I also train with Kady, she’s been very helpful to push me beyond what I thought ever possible. I always feel very welcomed by all the gym participants as hellos and good mornings are always present. I highly recommend trying out the River Gym for help with movement today!!

Old owner used to be friendly and professional. It is now owned by a young rude and bratty owner. She started an argument with me after asking for a simple explanation of the day pass. (Used to be 24 hours, now it just lasts til the gym closes) and said I was being rude because I mentioned how the old pass worked and how the new pass is more expensive and gives you less access. I will not be taking my business here. Especially with an unstaffed gym (incredibly unsafe, as all gyms require cpr and aed certified staff incase of emergency), outdated equipment (rusty) and rude management. Great example of how new management can kill a great thing.

Fantastic gym with the nicest staff and fair prices! River gym has a vast array of machines, even novelty machines that most neighborhood and corporate gyms lack. The personal trainers are very knowledgeable and will craft a workout that fits your goals, while also challenging you to increase the intensity. If you’re looking for a local gym where the owner knows every member, and is willing to help you achieve both nutritional and physical goals, River Gym is the gym for you!

Mediocre gym with limited machines, rigs, and options. Older equipment that’s starting to deteriorate. If you’re military and plan on terminating your agreement, be sure to do it well in advance of the 30-day mark. Otherwise, they’ll charge you for an entire month just for going one day over even if your orders changed.
Definitely worth going to the base gym if you’re staying in the Colonial Beach area.

Great little gym. If you're only visiting short term then you can pay per visit. It was quiet most time of day and a good mixture of folk. Al staff super friendly. Thanks River Gym for a great month.

My wife and I were staying in Colonial Beach for a few days on vacation. We decided to go to River Gym because it was 5 minutes from the motel we were staying at.
The gym is relatively small, but has a good variety of equipment, both machines and free weights. The fee for daily use was $10 per person, which I felt was reasonable. The gym even has a Peloton bike which my wife was excited to use.
The dumbbells have seen better days and many of the larger weight dumbbells are in pretty rough shape. Also I counted only one flat bench in the gym, along with one adjustable bench. Neither of those shortcomings, however, are why I am rating my experience as two stars.
The reason for that is because about 15 minutes into our workout, a staff member came over to my wife and I and accused me of being a person trainer and her of being my client. Why? Because I would demonstrate an exercise to her and have her then do the exercise. When we explained to her that I was not acting as a personal trainer, she curtly replied "That's what it looks like to the cameras." I have been going to gyms regularly for almost 30 years. I am an amateur bodybuilder, and have trained with professional bodybuilders. I have several friends who are personal trainers. So I am not a neophyte to the world of fitness. I have worked out with many people at many gyms and demonstrated exercises to them, and had people demonstrate exercises to me, and never have any of us been accused of "personal training". It was insulting to be treated so rudely and dismissively.
I am a small business owner, and I would be mortified if one of my staff treated a paying customer in that manner. I really wrestled with the decision to leave this review, because I do not care to disparage someone's business that they obviously worked very hard to build. However, as a small business owner if there are ways to improve my business I am always willing to listen. And I think my personal anecdote provides an opportunity for the owner of the River Gym to do just that.
As for my wife and I we finished our workout (separately). And the next day I drove 45 minutes to Fredericksburg and went to Planet Fitness. Once again, I demonstrated exercises for her and then had her do them. However, there were no issues from staff, who were all friendly and helpful.

I’ve been a member for almost 2 weeks now. The staff has always been professional, friendly, and encouraging. I love the variety of equipment from traditional lifting to “strongman” type equipment. Considering the variety, the cost is quite fair especially since membership offers 24 hour access. If I had to dig around for a gripe, I would only find two. The air conditioning could be better (phew Fall is just around the corner though) and I do wish the row of cardio machines faced out instead of the wall. Those are just my personal preferences, though. Over all, I’m quite happy with this gym. It’s got everything I need to grown

I love this place. When we first moved to Virginia last fall we were looking for a place to work out and we were so excited to find such a progressive gym in such a friendly little town. All the classes are included and the staff is so knowledgeable. Since joining I've dropped 14 lbs and gained considerable strength. I really look forward to the gym now after avoiding it most of my life.
