Paul is very good at helping with form. That is very important to me. I like Paul’s classes because he does a great job of pushing but balancing that with technique and what is reasonable. For example, the workout today called for 70lbs kb snatches. I’ve been to some gyms where there would be peer pressure to go that heavy, even when it might lead to injury. At my age, avoiding injury is my highest priority by far. I am comfortable at Paul’s sessions because he is excellent at striking the right balance.

I did an open gym drop in while traveling in the area. The owner and coaches ensured I had everything I needed to complete my programming for the day. I felt very taken care of! I will come back here if in the area again.

"My first-day experience at Sand & Steel was everything I was looking for in a workout! Janel’s patience and attention to detail made me feel supported as a new member. She took the time to educate me, ensuring I understood each movement, and her encouragement truly inspired me to keep going. I couldn’t have asked for a better start!"

I began looking for a supplementary fitness routine in order to hit certain goals over the next 6-12 months. I’ve been to multiple CrossFit facilities across the globe and this ranks as the top facility I’ve ever stepped foot in. Not only is the facility top tier in terms of location, layout, and equipment available, the environment is already what I have missed about CrossFit.
In addition, having coaches that are on time and prepping the class is a must for me and it was evident that this facility takes it seriously from my first encounter with a coach and owner.
Lastly, being able to sit down with the owner, Paul, and discuss membership, perks, scheduling, his philosophy and many other topics, I was sold before even leaving. Paul and his staff have already made me feel welcome and that this was not only the correct fit for my goals of weight loss and rebuilding but overall to maximize my fitness journey.

Do yourself the favor and take the trial class.

I joined Sand and Steel three months ago and wanted to wait to write a review until I gave CrossFit the good ol' college try.

I'm happy to report after 3 months of showing up as consistently as possible, I definitely picked the right gym to start my CrossFit journey.

I simply reached out on their website to try a class for free; it was super easy. Dawn and Paul worked with me to set up my membership, made sure I understood all the terms, and answered all my questions. You have to add the On-ramp course onto your membership if you're a beginner/new. Paul said most people keep it and I was certain I would NOT keep it after the first month; well, he was correct. I kept the OnRamp add on because it is such a great addition for me (anyone really) as a beginner. Dawn says slow is fast in CrossFit and it is so true - OnRamp is 1.5 hours so they really take more time to go over things and help with form/answer questions/etc. With the OnRamp course plus attending the regular CrossFit classes, I've seen great improvements all around.

You cannot beat the wealth of knowledge Dawn and Paul offer at their gym - they really know what they are talking about and you can tell they love CrossFit and want to help people. All the coaches are well educated in CrossFit and have good energy, whether it's 6am or 6pm. The facility is very very very clean; showers are clean with great water pressure. Equipment is well maintained. Oh, they have AC in the summer!

My only nitpick: I would prefer the music a little louder so people didn't have to hear me suffering but I realize it would be hard to hear instructions. :D

tl;dr: This gym is great and you should join!

CrossFit Sand & Steel is an amazing gym with some of the best coaches and trainers! I've had the opportunity to work with four of the coaches and each one of them is phenomenal! I chose the CrossFit Sand & Steel personal training program to help me get back into shape after an injury and the coaches quickly became part of my recovery plan. They're all incredibly knowledgeable, motivating, and really invested in their clients. I'm now stronger, faster, and more mobile because of them. I truly wish I had started at sooner!

There are lots of CrossFit Gyms in the Northern Virginia area. What makes Sand and Steel stand out above others is the coaching and care they provide to the members. They just don't throw you in to workouts and expect you to figure things out.

Instead, Paul, Dawn, and the rest of the coaching staff take their time to make sure you scale appropriately. The coaches make sure you work on mobility and nutrition, along with your workout. In my case, I have had a series of prior injuries, and moreover, I had consistent cramping and dehydration problems during workouts. No matter what supplements I took or how much water I drank, I would get light-headed, and my muscles would cramp. In short, my body simply refused to hold water. For years, I thought there was something medically wrong with me.

Paul recommended a great supplement as a pre-workout, and then the cramping was gone. Like Magic. Now, my conditioning, strength, and overall performance greatly improved.

So, like I said before... coaching makes a huge difference. This gym comes highly recommended.

I joined Sand and Steel about a year ago and I’m very happy with the gym and progress I’ve made so far! The classes are very organized and the coaches are highly trained.

Paul and Dawn provide a variety of classes such as regular CrossFit class, competitors, run club, yoga etc. They even run specialty courses throughout the year such as Olympic weightlifting and gymnastics to fine tune those complex movements to enhance performance.

I’ve improved my fitness in all areas including strength, endurance, mobility, and high intensity cardio. I go multiple times a week and my husband saw how much fun I was having, so he decided to join too!

Excellent, highly recommend. I do personal training-coaches are extremely knowledgeable, focusing on form and appropriate scaling while making things challenging. Very nice space and very clean. I haven't done Crossfit classes but bet, since it's in their name, they're excellent too. Nutrition & mobility labs also offered. It took me a while to get back to the gym and I'm happy to have chosen here--Get yourself to Sand & Steel!

There is no shortage of CrossFit gyms in NoVA but Sand & Steel Fitness strikes the perfect balance of exceedingly knowledgeable coaches, thoughtful programming, an enthusiastically welcoming community, and the cleanest gym you'll ever walk into. The exercise equipment and pro shop gear/supplements are all top of the line - you can tell that a lot of time is invested into making sure that S&S is outfitted with the high quality fitness products you need to reach your goals.

Group classes are intentionally small so coaches consistently provide the feedback necessary to promote progress and prevent injury. In conjunction with the workouts, Nutrition and Mobility coaching create the perfect antidote for the desk life that plagues many of us in the DMV area.

Sand & Steel meets everyone where they are, making it easy to just show up and do the work. Paul and Dawn maintain a strong culture of safety, standards, and support so, no matter what class or session you're in, you will get top tier instruction, modifications, and motivation from day one.

Highly recommend Sand and Steel Fitness for anyone looking to join CrossFit for either the first time, or as an experienced athlete switching gyms.

Paul, Dawn, and all their coaches are top notch. They offer a variety of classes that are challenging, engaging, and suited to both new Crossfitters and seasoned athletes alike. I'm fairly new to CrossFit and have found the community as a whole very welcoming.

The gym itself is extremely well furnished and has a wide variety of equipment and accessories, all clean and well organized. I personally attend several classes per week, and take advantage of the gym for 'open gym' hours outside of class, and as a former powerlifter/strongman, I appreciate the high quality equipment not found in every CrossFit gym.

In short; if you're looking for a top-notch CrossFit gym, you've found one.

I loved my time at Sand & Steel and highly recommend it. I recently moved from the area and was truly sad to leave the community. I joined the gym as a crossfit sceptic, but S & S was the only gym I could find with great covid protocols during mid to late stages of the pandemic. It took me about two or three months to really settle in and get comfortable. Once it all clicked, I enjoyed the varied workouts, the thorough coaching, and the visible results. The coaching staff are awesome. Dawn and Paul, the owners, were very accommodating. I highly recommend... even if you don't think you will like crossfit.

I didn’t know what CrossFit was until I came to Sand and Steal. My professor invited me to workout with him. I met Paul on my first class workout and he was so welcoming, he showed me to workout the right way to make sure I don’t get injured. I have never workout so hard in little time before. After the class was over. Paul invited me to his second class and so I joined. On the second is when I met Dawn and she was also very welcoming. They both gave me good feedback as I was working out. This is the place where you will feel motivated and reach your personal fitness goals done. I definitely recommend you want to see progress. You will feel the pain and the gain. Thank you all for having me and made me feel welcomed.

CrossFit Sand & Steel has had a huge impact on my health and well-being. I was a bit nervous to sign up at first given I had been sedentary for years and not in the best physical shape. I am so glad I did sign up though because it has been life-changing. The instructors are all great— starting with Paul and Dawn and they are very professional and committed to your fitness goals. Alicia, Jose, EJ and Jen are also amazing and are solid partners to me in my journey to better health. They are all extremely knowledgeable, patient and professional. They have also built a great sense of community and belonging at their location. For all this I am extremely grateful!

This review is for all the people who second guess their ability to do CrossFit or any kind of fitness:

The OnRamp classes are great for individuals with ZERO to little CrossFit experience. Paul is diligent about making sure your form and technique is correct. All of the trainers are kind, helpful, and knowledgable! The workouts are fantastic and challenging no matter your fitness level. The people are the BEST part of Sand and Steele! The community is awesome! Everyone here from the coaches to the members are absolutely amazing and encouraging (even when you almost bust your behind trying to jump over a hurdle)!

Shoutout to my personal trainer Jose who always keeps me accountable and moving while making the sessions fun!

I wish I had read about the cancellation policy closely before joining the gym. They charge you for 3 months regardless of the circumstances for cancellation. which is over $600 to cancel the membership. Anyone joining new please consider whether you are ready to make a 1 year commitment. This fine print is not eay to come across during sign-up.

My appartments lease term policy is more flexible.

If you're looking for a place to improve your overall fitness and health, regardless of whether or not you know anything about Crossfit, Sand and Steel is the place to be. The owners, Paul and Dawn, and their team of skilled and knowledgeable coaches, will do everything they can to make sure you are meeting your goals. Workouts are tailored to your individual needs while also challenging you. The staff is super responsive, easily reachable, and very friendly! As for the services, there are a number of them, from Yoga to Nutrition classes to Personal Training. Even with a hectic schedule, there is something here for everyone. The sense of accomplishment after completing a difficult workout and the community that has been built here are two reasons why I continue to return day after day. I highly recommend Sand and Steel not only for the services, but also for the diverse and inclusive environment that has fostered a group of like-minded individuals. Very grateful to be part of the S&S family.

My first CrossFit experience after a lot of research, and I do not regret it! The coaches and owners have tons of invaluable experience and certifications that apply to almost anyone and any fitness, mobility and nutrition angle you can think of. They lead an inclusive and welcoming box that knows how to bring in new members of varying fitness levels, and more importantly to me, injury issues.

They have done an amazing job listening to my injury history and concerns and helping me scale any workout to my needs, and focusing on form as key to injury prevention and rehab!

If you're looking for high quality exercise and nutrition guidance from knowledgeable, personable, and capable trainers, then I highly recommend giving Sand & Steel Fitness a try. You will be safely pushed to your limits and there's a good chance that you will enjoy it! Ask for Paul. He's a good person and he knows and loves what he's doing to help people achieve their fitness goals! I'm sure he can help you whatever your level.

I have been close friends with Paul, co-owner and trainer of Sand & Steel Fitness, since middle school on Long Island. I recently visited him during a trip down to NC. Paul and Dawn have created an amazing gym. Paul was always passionate and competitive about fitness. He sets the bar high for himself in all of his goals, and I am sure he helps his clients do the same for themselves. Paul told me that it feels good to help others and he is confident in his ability to do so.

After catching up and giving me a tour, Paul invited me to join him in his workout. As expected, the gym is in immaculate condition and spotlessly clean. It has to be clean because Paul is very sensitive to dust.

Also of no surprise was that all of the equipment and apparatus is of the highest quality. Paul always believed in having the best for the activities and hobbies he cared about. This high standard also applies to the quality of the trainers that Paul hires and teaches, as well as the programs and supplements offered at Sand & Steel.

Paul's mother is a dietitian so Paul was always conscious about health and nutrition. Paul probably learned a thing or two about health and fitness while earning a degree in biomedical engineering from Johns Hopkins.

Edit: I stopped by a second time on my way back north and got to do a second workout with Paul and another trainer Max. Max is very nice! I had never done any of the exercises in either of the two workouts. It was fun and challenging! I haven't been to a gym in 7 years and I don't miss it. There is a stark contrast between Sand & Steel and your typical gym. I wouldn't get bored at Sand & Steel.

Take advantage of the trial membership and see why Sand and Steel Fitness is different from other gyms.

I was a CrossFit member at another gym several years ago for about a year and enjoyed the CrossFit workouts. However the gym closed and life happened.

I began taking classes through a mentorship at Sand and Steel Fitness. Sand and Steel Fitness not only offers CrossFit classes, but several other types of classes and they offers one on one personal training and nutrition classes. Sand and Steel Fitness offers additional classes such a Yoga, and Beyond Stretch, which I've attended and realized that my flexibility and balance needs some improvement.

However, the classes are not the only highlight of Sand and Steel Fitness. Like most gyms, there is a community that is developed from members getting to know each other through workouts. But what sets Sand and Steel different from the other gyms is the monthly workout challenges and the social gatherings where long lasting friendships are made.

The classes are put together so that they are safe for each and every member. A new member can take classes with the novice member, but the workout for the new member is modified that they are getting the same workout as the expert without feeling intimidated.

So give Sand and Steel Fitness a try and you will see the difference.

I have been attending the Crossfit classes and personal training here for a week so far and I really enjoy all the coaches I have been working with. The owners, coaches and fellow athletes are very supportive and helpful and they try to push you to be your best in a safe and helpful way.

They have a lot of ways to help you make good decisions in reaching your goals.

The pricing is based on how often you plan to workout and this helps me be motivated to make sure I get in all my workouts for the week.

They do very well with the current COVID protocols and keeping everyone safe. In addition the building is locked so only members have access which shows that the owners care about the safety of their members.

Scheduling and viewing the daily workouts are easy through the apps they use and its very convenient when you are planning your week.

BLUF: I drive an hour and pass a lot of gyms on my way here... it's worth it! The trainers are talented, the wide variety of classes and programming are fun, and everyone is welcoming and supportive.
TLDR: I'm 55 and joined the gym 3 months ago with an injured rotator cuff, tennis elbow, knee pain, and lower back pain (all from 1~5 years prior and failed many attempts at YouTube rehab) ... ok, I'm old... I get it. Today, every injury is healed!! Not only that, but I know how to prevent and heal them in the future. Thanks to trainer Max and master trainer and owner Paul! My next step is to get with Paul to plan out bulletproofing my newly healed muscles and joints and building strength. BTW, as far as I can tell I'm always the oldest guy in the room, but I think I'm the only one who noticed.

If you want a high quality gym where the trainers invest in their clients then I highly recommend Sand and Steel Fitness. I used to go to another CrossFit gym (I won’t mention their name) where they had a beginner CrossFit class but after you are done learning the foundations they stopped caring about your progress. This is not case with Sand and Steel! My first few weeks of getting back into CrossFit I was considering quitting because I felt I wasn’t good at it, but then one day Paul called me and offered personal training to help me with the movements because he could see I was having a hard time. I have been a member for four months now and I feel going to Sand and Steel was the best decision I ever made! I couldn’t even do a push-up in the beginning but now I can do several in a row!!! I am a recent member, and found SSF via Nextdoor from a post about which gyms in the area have the safest and most responsible COVID protocols. I can attest that their dedication to health is top-notch - every gym-goer is always masked, the equipment cleaning protocol is fantastic, and my favorite feature is that they operate on a reservation basis so capacity is carefully managed. On the people note, I have been very impressed with the professionalism and obvious expertise displayed by staff. In various contexts - classes, personal training, open gym - coaches and trainers always prioritize form over increasing weight, and offer tips about how to target this muscle group or that. The equipment is fantastic and cutting edge, and surprisingly the pricing is extremely clear and easy to understand! That has not been my experience at big box gyms or other places, and it is extremely appreciated. Most importantly, however - they are welcoming to folks of all experiences, levels, and confidence. The staff have created an environment that is not intimidating, and gym goers are of every body type. I recommend this gym whole-heartedly, and am happy to have found SSF!

Update Post 12/15/2020: I have been meaning to write an update from my 4 star review. Since attending this gym now the past few months I think it deserves 5+ stars. It wasn't a gym I expected it to be. There is a lot to offer here for each person whether you are just starting a new program, losing weight, building strength, need rehab, mobility work, yoga sessions etc. To me & maybe others, this isn't your typical Macho Man (only if you want to be), super hardcore, intimidating, text on bench, lollygag around type of gym. All are welcome! But, when you come here, things get done & you will get better. I feel it is rather peaceful & the environment/atmosphere is welcoming. The members themselves are supportive & the workouts can be scaled to your level/situation. So if you can't do a particular move, the coaches are there to help provide you an alternative. Big Plus if you are injured or simply not an advanced level. Each gym coach/trainer I have seen puts a lot of time/effort into the workouts while also giving guidance. Something you don't get often. The past few months I have had a lot of fun with the classes they offer while learning a lot about the movements. That has been the game changer for me.
Over the course of my first month or so, I injured my knee which set me back. This didn't happen at S&S. I already had an on going knee issue. One could choose to stop working out & just like that you stop all together. Fortunately I didn't go that route. I continued showing up to the classes & upgraded my membership to Open Gym so I could work my way back up. Paul and Dawn were really great and supportive in the matter. Each class I took, I did a scaled version working around the injury. Both coaches recommended I see a physical therapist to help fix my issue which I did. With Paul's help and recommendation I booked an appointment to help regain my range of motion and build up the strength in my knees. Literally I was unable to squat and exert force on the joints. Early morning PT followed by evening training at S&S for the next 1.5months I was slowly but surely getting better. Now, fully recovered but cautious I have progressed while performing all of the movements pain free.
Beginning of the virus, like many, I stopped going to the gym, did some at home workouts, shortly after fell off and became flat out lazy. After some time & tired of being in a pity, I came here wanting something different & better then what I was use to doing. If your worried about going back to the gym because of the virus, you have the right to be but let me tell you briefly. IMO, There is only so much that can be done to keep all of us safe every single day. Do your best, be clean, & don't let it stop you. Attending the gym helps mentally & physically in so many ways I will not list. At Sand & Steel I feel pretty comfortable because of so many new things that have been established here in the past few months. They have went BEYOND what most places could do to create a safe environment. Proof is on their website and when you visit...it's worth a read. 1)The shoe policy (odd to me at first) must wear actual lifting shoes, NO outside/running shoes. This actually keeps the facility really clean and protects you from injuring yourself. 2)Cleaning wipe downs on equipment after use & they're sanitary fogger. 3)Installed upgraded HVAC systems, BigA** Fans, Air quality monitors & even a cell phone sanitizer?! 4)Everyone must wear a mask even working out. Its tough & different but oh well. 5)Small class sizes (more space). 6)Sign health declaration/temp check. All good steps measures.

**The equipment here is by far the best-all around high quality. It's all well maintained, clean & organized. It's not junk, broken & misplaced. The majority of it is Made in USA too, which I appreciate & value. IMO, all is a Plus. Makes for a better gym all around. Beats paying for a gym where some owners/members don't care much about functional equipment let alone safety.

One of the best decisions I made this year by far. Just sign up & show up you wont regret it!

Big fan of this gym. Friendly environment, personal attention....Great customer service does a long way. Paul has been nothing short of fantastic to me during my time there. I also feel safe in the COVID environment we are in. Everything was clean and spread out. I’m going to be starting the classes soon (doing personal training now) and can’t wait to see how it goes! 5 stars for sure!

This is a great gym!!! They exceed the expectations placed upon a facility such as this one especially during this time of COVID. The staff was very helpful setting me up and getting me started with their systems. Their staff is also well educated and certified to provide assistance with any needs, whether they be personal training or group exercise courses. They are a gym that is able to meet a wide variety of patrons needs as well CrossFit, powerlifting, general workout, etc. I would recommend anyone in the area to try them out for a week trial!

I’ve been going to Sand and Steel since November 2017, and not only have I grown and gotten healthier with Sand and Steel, Sand and Steel itself has grown over time. It hasn’t only grown in the sense of a larger location, more members, more trainers, and more machines, it has matured and perfected its approach to fitness and had a positive impact on my life.

My family has been hard hit by COVID—some close family members in other parts of the country struggled with the illness and some have lost their jobs and continue to be furloughed. Sand and Steel came through for my needs. First, Paul has taken COVID extraordinarily seriously and has undertaken great precautions to keep folks’ training safe. Second, Sand and Steel has really grown and refined its group classes, which have saved me money as I’m supporting my family through these tough times. Third, Sand and Steel keeps getting better: soon it’ll install a state-of-the-art air filter to keep people even safer if COVID surges in the fall.

Sand and Steel’s conscientious approach isn’t limited to COVID. It is also committed to members’ safety. In personal training or classes, the coaches make sure you’re using proper form while lifting so as not to hurt your back, shoulders, etc. Paul’s incredible doing this even if he’s teaching a class of 6. Honestly, that’s probably the reason why I keep coming back.

I should have written this review much sooner, but, after returning to Sand and Steel in a post-COVID world, I feel compelled. Sand and Steel is a great business and has made my life better. Hats off to Paul and Dawn.

I did 4 weeks of personal training with Max R. because I was looking to rehab my shoulder after an extended period without lifting. I would absolutely recommend Sand and Steel Fitness to anyone, whether you are new to working out or are looking to take your fitness to the next level. The staff are kind and extremely knowledgeable, and the gym has a variety of equipment and classes to suit any exercise style (powerlifting, olympic, crossfit, yoga, etc.). My trainer was able to teach me an array of exercises to help strengthen my rotator cuff and shoulder while also safely pushing me to improve my foundational exercises.

I’ve been in northern Virginia for a bit over a year now, and started researching personal trainers ironically about a month before COVID-19 shut everything down. I wasn’t new to working out, gyms, and figured I had decent fundamentals after years of push-ups being drilled into me. But, after a couple years of persistent pain that even a couple months of rest couldn’t solve, I decided to get serious. I never really considered a personal trainer before, even at the big box gyms with several thousand square feet of equipment and space. I also tried Crossfit a couple times at a place near me in my former state and was honestly not very impressed. That Box gave about a 30min intro on techniques, and never really monitored closely for proper form – it was all about the time!

I was considering two main gyms in the Alexandria area for personal training, to address my lingering pain issues. Fast forward to when gyms started to re-open as COVID-19 restrictions started to relax. Sand and Steel was one, and another which I won’t name. When I first set up my intro appointment with Paul, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I assumed it was mostly a Crossfit gym that did some other stuff. But the main reason I wanted to go check them out was because the website mentioned core strength and mobility, which is what I felt I needed. After talking with Paul, he was very confident that they were very capable of addressing my fitness needs. We looked over the list of services, and I committed to Personal Training and Open Gym to start out with. Though Open Gym was something I cancelled fairly early, after realizing it didn’t mesh with my schedule too well right now (the cancellation process was a breeze).

I’m now entering my third month and am very satisfied with selecting Sand and Steel. I am steadily making progress on my goals and have noticed improvements and reduction in pain. I’ve made a point to have a session with each of the trainers, to get a feel for each person’s way of instruction. Everyone has a different style, so I wanted to compare and contrast. Fortunately, all the trainers are really great – there are some slight differences in how they break down movements. But consistent across every trainer was their focus on proper form, and then providing any variety of variations if one movement was too difficult, or you already hit fatigue. Even the pushup, which I assumed would have been perfect after years of doing them, needed to be tweaked so I could better protect my shoulders. That was honestly a little humbling 😊 I even did a training session with Paul, who seems to know any number of ways to get you to muscle fatigue! And the private yoga sessions with Ira were definitely helpful for someone with very limited yoga experience. My wife has done yoga much more than I, and absolutely loves Ira’s yoga classes!

This is all a very verbose way of saying you need to go to Sand and Steel! Whether it is for personal training, classes, or yoga, they have a great program that is tailored to YOU.

I've been a member at Sand and Steel since NOVA reopened about a month ago and I've been really happy with the gym! The owners (Paul and Dawn) are super friendly, the equipment is always clean, the squat racks have a good amount of space between them, and the gym isn't overcrowded. I feel safe working out there amidst the pandemic and honestly I won't be going back to the bigger gyms like Gold's, LA Fitness, etc. Sand and Steel is definitely a smaller, more contained environment and I love it. As far as the equipment goes, most of it is geared toward Crossfit and Strongman style workouts and you won't find many machines (aside from cardio). They have a TON of hard-to-find specialty equipment like safety bar squats, hip thrusters, sandbags, trap bars, rings, and so much more. Overall, Sand and Steel is an excellent gym and I couldn't be happier with my decision to join!

I owned a gym in Dallas for 3 years and I have a high standard for strength training facilities. Sand and Steel is premier. I squat, bench, deadlift, overhead press, and power clean, as workout staples and this place had every bell and whistle to intensify my workouts. I used open gym and scheduling and getting in were app based and easy. The owner outfitted me with a branded coffee mug, towel, beer bottle opener, and tote bag on sign up. This place is affordable and honestly I think the price point is low for everything I received.
Serious facility for folks serious about their strength and conditioning.

I have attended about 6 classes at Sand and Steel and have enjoyed it so far. I have taken the Crossfit Beginner Class and Yoga Class. I love the focus on form and recovery. One of my biggest worries with Crossfit is the risk of injury but my experience so far puts me at ease that the focus of the owners and trainers on form and recovery will mitigate injuries. I had never done yoga before and loved Marlena's class. She did an excellent job demonstrating and correcting my posture when needed. The only thing I would change would be to add more classes at different times of the day and maybe consider having an open gym when there is no class in session.

After I got out of the Marine Corps, I was dealing with chronic pain in my neck, back, and foot (severe at times) and medical issues that wouldn’t allow for any real progression in my fitness. As a former athlete, I was very discouraged and frustrated. Chiropractic and physical therapy weren’t enough. The coaches at Sand and Steel were the key in finding every muscle imbalance and bad habit I acquired in both my fitness and nutrition, then coming up with a plan to fix them. I’m finally back to a place where I can start working toward performance goals instead of basic functionality. Paul as the owner is also an amazing yoga teacher. I’ve been doing yoga for over 10 years, have trained with teachers around the world, and I’ve still learned so much from him that I’ve carried over into my practice. I highly recommend this place no matter your fitness level or life situation. They will meet you where you are at!

Sand and Steel Fitness is a great place for all interested in becoming healthier. With the vast knowledge of the owner and his staff workouts are designed and modified to meet a client's current fitness level while pushing to advance toward your goals (newbie to triathletes).

Selecting Sand and Steel
I scoured websites, read reviews, and visited three gyms in the area that offered personal training. I began with a Gym Tour and purchased a Starter Pack of 4 sessions (highly recommend if you're new to working out or haven't been to the gym or with a trainer in a while). This allowed me to sample a variety of different offerings over the course of 30 days.
Based on that information I ended up selecting Sand and Steel Fitness and here's a little more on why:
*The combined experience and education exceeds what you'll find in most places
*They provide all of what you need in one place: personal training, yoga, classes, nutrition, and mobility. You're not required to do all but they are available to you.
*They customize to the client
*They are open 7 days a week with varying hours including early morning and nights.
*They educate you! Sometimes I feel that I leave an hours session having worked out and gone to school. Trainers refer to muscle groups often and take the time to educate you if you're not up to speed on anatomy.
*They use web-based and app-based calendars to book appointments and track progress.

With each session I attended staff updated me gym offerings, made various recommendations and suggestions, but no one was ever pushy with sales or products. I rotate through the different classes but most of my time I am attending a personal training session. Since the time I booked with them I have lost weight, built muscle, and lost inches. You'll ultimately find what works best for you as a client and there are a variety of options for you to choose from. I feel comfortable with the team and look forward to working out.

Menopause had totally changed my metabolism. Despite my efforts to eat well and exercise, not only was I unable to lose weight, I was gaining weight like crazy. I knew I needed a major kick in the a**, so I began the search for a personal trainer.

I belong to a gym and I’ve seen the trainers there working out with their clients. Tbh, I almost went this route. But because I was so out of shape, I felt self-conscious working out in a crowded gym. In checking out other options, I came across Sand and Steel. Boutique personal training... I thought, “Yea, but it must be super expensive.” Well, while it does come at a price, it is no more expensive than the trainers at my gym. So I booked the starter package, figuring the worst that could happen was that I'd find it wasn’t the right place for me.

During one of the starter pack sessions, I told Paul that I suffered from tennis elbow (which for me had been a chronic condition for YEARS.) I will never forget – he shook his head and said I didn’t need to worry about it any longer. He had suffered from tennis elbow himself; he understood my concerns and said he knew how to cure it. I was skeptical but purchased enough sessions later that day that would take me through the end of August.

Observations:
• All of my workouts were different. I worked out with six different trainers and used all sorts of equipment. I’ve discovered that I like boxing, battle ropes, and dead lifts. Who knew?!??
• There are no distractions. This is not like working out in a crowded gym. At most, there will be one other client working out with his or her trainer on the same floor that you are on, but in a different area. The clients were all ages and all fitness levels.
• The trainer demonstrates the move and tells you the muscles you should feel working. I can’t count how many times we made adjustments because when I performed the exercise, I was not working the correct muscles.
• It’s all about form and preventing injury. The trainers watch you, and Paul and Dawn watch, too, if they are in the building and not with a client.

Fast forward four months… The five star reviews are legit. The bottom line is that S&S will tailor your workout regimen to your goals, your level of fitness, and (most importantly) take into consideration any limitations you may have, but the trainers do push you. And my tennis elbow? Paul was right. I haven’t had any issues with tennis elbow since I started at Sand and Steel. Other things I very much appreciate about S&S that I would not have gotten from P/T at my gym: You gain so much by working out with different trainers, because they each bring expertise in different areas; your P/T sessions are not at set days/times every week – you book them when you want – and sessions are available from early AM to late in the evening; one-on-one mobility, nutrition, and yoga sessions are also available… I could go on, but this stuff is in all of the other reviews.

A couple of weeks ago I was talking to a good friend, lamenting the fact that I couldn’t afford to continue my P/T sessions. Wow, did I ever get an earful!!! According to my friend, what I couldn’t afford to do was to stop now. She said she has seen such a transformation in me that stopping now was not an option. (Actually she was kind of yelling, in the manner of “Are you crazy?!??) In addition to the visible results, working out with the trainers at S&S has given me a huge boost to my self-confidence. I love being stronger and the workouts are fun. I hope this review motivates anyone who is, like me, either struggling to lose weight or with the challenges that come with growing older, to check out Sand and Steel. For me, although it’s a lot of money it’s worth every penny.

RECOMMENDATION: Take the dive — it’s worth the investment.

BLUF: I get a killer workout every time, and I've had some killer workouts over the years. In six weeks Paul, Dawn, and the team of coaches have helped me overcome a number of imbalances that led to my last lower back injury and helped me rebound quickly from tendonitis. They’ve corrected a number of form issues on movements I thought I had long mastered. Oh, and I finally figured out how to fully engage my glutes and lower core! Invest in your physical education just as you’d invest in your academic education — you get one body, so learn from a team whose profession is improving the form, function and fitness of others.

TRAINERS: Every trainer I’ve worked with has been professional, friendly, diligent in monitoring and correcting form, scaling up/down as appropriate, and adapting to existing injuries. They all come with a strong depth of knowledge from different backgrounds. I appreciate that each trainer reviews the training notes from the last session to make adjustments as needed. They’ve also gone a bit off script at times to address problem areas. Communicate openly and you’ll get the most from these sessions. Ask questions and learn — you’re paying for their knowledge and expertise.

TRAIN THE TRAINER: One thing you may observe during a session is an on-the-spot “train the trainer” moment between one of the owners and the trainers. This is one of my favorite aspects of this gym, because I love that everyone gets better with each passing day, including the outstanding coaches. This fosters an active learning environment and helps everyone constantly improve their practice, so don’t be surprised when it happens — it helps everyone grow!

FACILITY: I live in Old Town, and I’m used to the small homes and buildings such as the one this gym is built within. That said, I’m amazed how much they’ve effectively fit into this space without making it feel overcrowded. It also has everything and several things I’ve not yet come across in my fitness adventures. Jacob’s ladder, power sleds, infinite ropes, barbell racks, ski and row ergs, assault bikes, rings, TRX, climbing wall, kettlebells, sandbags…if there’s a piece of equipment, they probably have it or some similar version. It’s also always clean.

TRAINING METHODS: The diversity of training techniques matches the variety presented in the equipment, and it’s all tailored to your programming. My programming during these first six weeks was designed to balance strength and conditioning as we worked to correct some posterior chain and core imbalances identified during the fitness assessment. We also corrected general form issues, built up capacity after coming out of two injuries, and initiated fat loss. Mobility and flexibility is always a focus — strength without movement doesn’t do anyone much good! Also, you’ll also see a range of clients attending S&S: older, younger, fit, and those just starting down their fitness paths. It’s an inclusive environment. No two clients are the same or have the same goals, but it appears everyone is getting the level of instruction, guidance and challenge they need to be successful.

NUTRITIONAL ADVISING: The starter package I purchased offered a 30-min intro session with Paul and an InBody scan. Paul methodically went through the report with me rather than leave me to Google-magic my way through it later. From that scan, he laid out macros and micros to target. I appreciate the overview he provided — I didn’t expect to learn anything new during this session, but I did. I’ll have my first full hour session tomorrow.

Sand and Steel is a great place to apply yourself to actually meeting your goals. Paul and Dawn have it all in place for you.

Tailored exercise regimens to address strength, weight loss, flexibility? Check.

Learn how to eat in such a way that you can build muscle and lose weight at the same time in a way that is realistic? Check.

Enhance and develop all the small muscles in your body that somehow you as a grown human have managed to avoid strengthening over the last 30+ years by sleepwalking your way through life? Check.

Provide (actually) exhausting, comprehensive reading material, recommendations and information that address each and every aspect of improving your health, diet, habits and body? Check.

The most amazing thing about Sand and Steel is not that all the items mentioned above are provided by this team in a seamless and customized fashion. Nope.

What sets Sand and Steel apart is the way this is delivered to you, the client, in a way that is highly intelligent, thoughtful, and supportive.

I am now in my third month there and would recommend it to everyone without reservation, especially if, for whatever reason, you thought spending time in a gym was not for you.

This place is.

I have been working with the S&S team for just over two months. In that short amount of time, I have learned about my abilities and just how wrong I have been. From learning that I have the strength and ability to do things I didn't think possible to understanding the challenges I have had are fixable. As my confidence goes up as I hit milestones, so does the relief I feel when I learn that I haven't been exaggerating or "making up" the pain I was in for years. It also helps to know that that pain is not permanent, nor does it require drastic measures.
Yes, you have to drive yourself toward your goals to be successful, but with S&S guiding the way that success is definitely within sights. These folks know what they are doing, they maintain their skills with constant training of their own bodies and minds, and they really care.

A little long but I wanted to capture everything I would be looking for while researching fitness options.

1. Results: First let me start off my saying I’ve tried a lot of different gyms and trainers from Gold’s Gym to other fitness studios, from cross fit boxes to various running clubs. All seeking a better body. Out of everything that I’ve tried throughout the years Sand and Steel Fitness definitely is the only place where I’ve experienced lasting results. Not only were they quick results but it’s been almost a year (9 months) and I am still noticing differences. My body fat percentage has dropped from 29% to 24%, as well as my clothing size from 10/12 and now I’m at a 4/6.

2. Nutrition: I know the key to this success was mostly in part to nutrition. They actually have a legit curriculum to follow that makes sense and is obtainable and most importantly sustainable. Again, I’ve tried everything from Atkins, Paleo and embarrassed to say, Jenny C. Nothing yielded results the way their Origin Nutrition program does. Paul in addition to his formal training, actually takes time to read and research on his own to develop the teaching sessions.

Also, most recently I was severely anemic my iron count was at a 6.0. I worked with Paul and he literally researched all foods that have iron and what ways I can improve my count through nutrition. My last iron count was a 12.5 just 3 weeks ago. They clearly go above and beyond which means a lot to me.

3. Training Sessions/Trainers: When I first started I was told that I would not get the same trainer each time. I initially thought that was crazy and quite frankly bothered by it however, I was pleasantly surprised that I actually like that system way more than I thought I would. Here’s why, my training plan was well documented where each trainer jumped right in to pick up from the previous session. I also like the fact that each trainer has a uniqueness which keeps it interesting and they all operate with excellence. At a previous a fitness studio that I attended, the trainer appeared to be making up exercises as he went along. So the mere fact that I had a well-documented plan was a plus. Not only do I have a plan but I really enjoy the baseline testing. I just completed my follow-up testing to see where I have improved and I improved in all areas.
I almost forgot to mention the In Body Assessments. This is where the rubber meets the road and the numbers don’t lie. The scans give you your body fat percentage and a thorough breakdown of your body composition. This also keeps me honest 

4. Cost: When I first noticed Sand and Steel it was during the Old Town Fire Festival. I immediately thought since its Old Town the price has to be outrageous. After checking the prices and comparing it to what I was currently paying I immediately left my existing fitness studio. I’m afraid to even share how much I was previously paying, don’t want Sand and Steel to get any ideas ;)

The bottom line is this place is legit. If you are looking for results this is definitely the place. The program is more than doable and I promise you will see a new you. My favorite part is when my Facebook friends see me out, because they see my “check in” post they all know I’ve been working out. They constantly say “those workouts are really paying off” LOL. Interesting....it just dawned on me that I usually always post about my workouts but never received those comments until I started Stand and Steel!

Sand & Steel fitness is one of the first gyms I found were the trainers actually listened to what I had to say. I explained my goals, experiences, and most importantly, limitations (previous injury). Paul and his team developed a customized plan that was challenging, but also attainable.

90% of my sessions have been with Rachel, who is very adept at noticing and correcting any problems with your form or technique so you can complete the workout safely. I know I'm going to work hard when i'm scheduled with Rachel, but she also keeps it light and fun.

The facility itself is impressive. For a row house in Old Town, it has very imaginable piece of equipment. And some I'd rather not imagine. Every inch of this gym is dedicated to helping their clients reach their fitness goals.

It's been a great experience.

Paul is Absolutely Phenomenal. I came in thinking I know everything because I work for GNC and am a personal trainer as well and was absolutely shocked at the knowledge I gained in just 1 hour! I have an entirely different outlook on nutrition, made a complete diet change, and learned things I was doing wrong that I coulda swore I was doing right. The nutrition session led to a meal plan that I will be revolving my life around for years to come. Couldn't have been more pleased and being in this business for 7 plus years I would recommend over anyone!

I send my clients to Sand and Steel for fun, variation, and hard workouts. My clients are coming back from injury. It is so encouraging to hear them come back full of confidence and say "I never knew I could do that!". The workouts are challenging and I love to hear/see strength results on my clients.

I would recommend this business because I found all of the trainers to be super knowledgeable, professional and friendly. The woukouts I did there - including the assessment appointments - were tough, in part because of the exercises and movememts, and in part because of the coaching. They can really push you. I was also pleasantly surprised that the nutrition program seemed educational... not just pushing shakes, protein bars and supplements like other places and programs. Overall, loved my experience there!

Well, let me make one thing clear that I am NOT writing from the perspective of a member of Sand & Steel, but one as a practicing wellness professional who has had the wonderful opportunity to have a first-hand experience in witnessing the operations of both Paul and Dawn in action; and I must say, that impressive, is not a strong enough adjective to describe the expertise, apparatus, and organization that these two provide. Witnessing them perform their craft and getting informed on how they run S&S, has been a delightful and informative experience thus far and I know that must be indicative of what their members consistently receive on a per visit basis.

The personal training session with Paul pushed me to my limits, while his confident approach kept me focused on executing the routine. A full scale gym with a fraction of the people. Highly recommend.

This is not your run-of-the-mill fitness center where members read magazines while slow peddling on recumbent bikes or watch TV while jogging on a treadmill. I know this because prior to Sand & Steel, my workout routine pretty much consisted of those two activities: slow jogging and stationary bikes. I wasn't getting any results, and my doctor told me to lose 10-15 pounds. I needed a different workout and nutrition plan.

I found Sand & Steel while walking to the local pizza shop in Alexandria. After meeting Paul, the co-founder of S&S, i was immediately impressed with his knowledge and background. And, the equipment in the gym is state-of-the-art with many different machines that i've never seen before (e.g. jacob's ladder, a torturous climbing machine - great workout though). I signed-up for a monthly package, which included a body assessment, nutrition plan, and personal training. As expected, my body fat percentage was >20%, and I was frankly shocked to see on paper just how much body fat, in terms of pounds, was on my body (the assessment report is very thorough). Working with Paul, we devised a nutrition plan that worked for me including increasing my caloric intake in the morning, sorting through viable lunch options at my "hot" spots (Panera Bread, Cosi, and Chipotle) and having a sensible dinner. I bought into the new plan and came home with a bunch of nutrition supplements; my wife thought I was crazy.

The workouts are short but intense. A workout may consist of only 3-5 exercises but everything is timed and you're pushed to failure. I had never trained in cross-fit type exercises so this concept was new to me. Paul and Dawn will teach you the moves and are very patient, making sure everything is safe and will carefully build upon the exercises as you progress. I don't have a lot of free time and what I found is that you can get an unbelievable workout in 25-35 minutes, or the same amount of time that I used to slow jog on the treadmill. I work out 3 days a week at the gym.

I just completed my 6 week assessment and results are amazing: my body fat % decreased by almost 30% (under 20% of total body fat), and I lost 10 pounds of pure fat! I knew the plan was working as I dropped a belt size, and my wife said I looked thinner and more muscular. In addition to the fat loss, I gained 6-7 pounds in muscle, which I thought was impossible in such a short amount of time.

This is the first review i've ever written on google. If you buy into the plan, workouts and nutrition, you will definitely see results. Looking forward to the next 6 weeks and reporting back!

Sand and Steel is one of the best gyms in Old Town Alexandria. Since training with Paul and Dawn in the last 6 months, and now Josef, I have seen a huge difference in my strength and how my clothes fit. I lost 3% body fat in the first 3 months of my training program. Paul's nutritional advise is personalized to maximize the results of the workouts. Unlike your standard gyms where trainers offer the same type of workouts, Paul, Dawn, and Josef develop a new workout every week for me. I train with them every week for the last 6 months and every workout is new, keeps me engaged (because I get bored easily), and most importantly, challenged! Training alone will not do it - I have to be equally engaged especially on my diet. Dawn's recipes and the way Paul analyzes what type of food I eat on a regular basis helped me make the right adjustments and avoid temptation, which is my weakness. If you train with Paul and Dawn, you will definitely see results.

This is a great gym and Paul and Dawn are the best trainers! I am a weekly regular, and Paul has single-handedly designed a program that has strengthened my injured shoulder. I used to have pain in many regular daily activities, but now I have almost no pain and am stronger than I have ever been. Rates are also reasonable for a personal training gym. Highly recommend this place. Great workouts and great people.

I won a raffle for a free group class and attended Crossfit 1. It was easily one of the best group fitness classes I've ever attended. The class size was kept very small, so it felt more like semi-private personal training than a group class. The instructors were great about working with injuries and everyone's level of ability, and packed a really awesome and intense workout into one hour (including introductions, warm up and cool down). The gym is really nice and clean, and has just about every state-of-the-art piece of equipment you could want. Definitely looking forward to trying more classes here soon!

The nutritional counseling that Paul provides is totally worth it. Now matter how much you know about nutrition, he backs it up with the science - down to the macro nutrient level. I've learned so much, and know that I have more to learn!
I started training with Paul last May, and I knew nutrition was going to be my biggest challenge. But I have to say - if you follow Paul's recommendations - you will absolutely achieve results. I think I lost 8 percent body fat in about 5 months - and it wasn't that hard. It does take effort on your part, planning your food, resisting temptation (my biggest weakness). But Paul is supportive - he knows life gets in the way sometimes.

The really nice part about the way Paul counsels is that he talks with you about what you like, don't like, and works that into whatever your plan calls for - whether it be body fat reduction or muscle building. And then works with you along the way to make sure you continue to achieve results.

I have no doubt that you'll achieve results if you decide to work with Paul!
