Very good ymca. Good enough gym to workout everything you need. Pool is shallow but is wide and long. The thing that really makes this ymca is that all the staff are excellent. Very friendly and helpful.

The YMCA has a lot of great offerings, especially for families and those looking for a community-oriented gym. The staff is generally friendly, and I appreciate the variety of classes and programs available. The pool and basketball court are nice features, and the childcare service is a big plus for parents.
That said, the facility could use some updates—some of the equipment feels a bit worn down, and the locker rooms aren't always as clean as they should be. It can also get pretty crowded during peak hours, which makes it hard to enjoy a workout.
Overall, it's a solid option if you're looking for an affordable gym with a community feel, but there’s definitely room for improvement.

Management has gone down hill - reached out multiple times before leaving with no response to messages from management or board.... and as a former board member for a long time ... if you don't do what the good ole boys network demands then you are out.. worst board I have ever been a member of ..... so disappointing. They are not willing.to listen to new ideas to advance the program or to let other be leaders of the. Board. Don't know how long it will take for change to happen here ... glad to be gone and to be a part of a healthier fitness - community centered program

I’ve been a member of the YMCA of South Hampton Roads and attended this location mostly for over a decade, off and on. While the Suffolk Family YMCA remains one of the largest and most family-oriented facilities in the region, it has noticeably declined since the change in management and recent renovations.
Big problem: accessibility. This facility is not disability-friendly. If you have mobility challenges, good luck. Handicap parking is a mess—terrible parkers frequently block the access ramps. The automatic doors? Often turned off or non-functional. And if you have any upper-body weakness, you’ll find out quickly that “24-hour access” doesn’t mean 24-hour usable access.
The final straw? The AC has been out for nearly two weeks during the hottest stretch of 2025. This isn’t a new issue—there’s been visible mold growing on the ductwork, which they recently just painted over instead of actually fixing. With what they charge for memberships and programs, it’s hard to justify keeping the facility open under these conditions. Box fans blowing hot, stale air through a packed gym is more than uncomfortable—it’s a serious failure in facility management.
In this economy, I don’t know how most people afford a full-price membership here. The Open Doors Program for financial assistance is still a bright spot, and one of the only reasons I haven’t walked away entirely. But overall, this place feels more focused on appearances than actually supporting the community. For an organization that claims to champion equity and inclusion, their disregard for accessibility is disappointing at best—and discriminatory at worst.

This is my child's first summer camp at the Suffolk YMCA. Upon drop-off on June 10th at approximately 8:30 AM, I requested to speak with the director regarding a medical concern. The attendant contacted Mrs. Noa Banks, who refused the request and instructed me to call instead. Despite leaving a message, I have yet to receive a return call. I find this lack of responsiveness to a parent's medical concern regarding their child unacceptable and inconsistent with the expected standards of a children's program.

This place is a full on rip off. We came in PERSON to fill out the cancellation form, and we were still charged a full month. We were never told or signed an agreement for the cancellation policy therefore it did not apply to us. Called the DIRECTOR Elizabeth and emailed multiple times for her to tell me she’ll call me back and never called me back. They will steal your money and have no care in the world, this is suppose to be a Christian gym or whatever but yet they do these things. Do better.

The staff here is beyond amazing! The place is always clean, and great for chid care. The staff know my babies name by hard and my kids always run in there like it’s their second home.

If you are looking for cheerleading for your child DO NOT go to the Suffolk YMCA. They are the most pathetic unorganized non communicated program administrators. The coach was the only person who cared and even after she was Sat down as coach still supported the team until an incident happened at the second to the last game. Our cheerleaders have sat and cheered in the same spot for almost a month and when we ask d a couple to move up a row they refused. The cheerleaders then stood at that spot and the couple got mad. They moved and then proceeded to approach the coach outside the venue and then on the road by driving beside and yelling at the car. The coach was then told she could no longer participate for rh last game. And that she was under investigation. Yet the people involved and witness were never contacted.
Communication was very poor on the administration side. The I organization of placement of cheerleaders practice and game was unorganized. assured this isn't the first bad experience I've had with Suffolk YMCA and I am done giving chances.

I am not understanding the naysayers here. While I understand the gym being crowded in the afternoons, this is a community YMCA. For those of us here to work out with the equipment I think they have a great range of high quality equipment for being a "smaller" local gym/facility. There are dedicated weight lifting areas, a functional fitness room (it's not open during 24-hr access times though), boxes, TRX & so much more.
For those who complain about the kids, you must go earlier like 5am/6am, later in the evening after the crowds go home, or on the weekends.
Many people enjoy the group classes here! Heard many great things about the instructors.
A few weeks ago I signed up and started one-on-one personal training sessions with one of their amazing trainers, Quinn. He is very professional, knowledgeable and friendly! Not only did he work with my own schedule and availability, but he caters the workouts to my exact needs and goals. He watches my form and challenges me with new and different workouts. I'm already feeling tremendous improvements in my body since I've started, particularly in my lower back, core, arms and leg strength. Mother of 3 boys here so I'm very pleased at how fast I'm building up my strength and core. I feel great!! Thank You Quinn!!

I took off 2 stars bcuz of the lack of open equipment after 5pm and the fact that during the summer the place is crawling with unsupervised kids cursing out loud and playing on the workout equipment... I came from the blocker ymca in norfolk which is the best ymca out here so I'm not going to kick their back in ppl are friendly at this ymca my only complaint is the kids during the summertime playing on equipment and cursing

We have been going to this location for roughly a year, when we first started going everything was clean, the gym was not over crowded and staff took care of many issues. For the last 6 months thing has progressively gone downhill, have seen groups of teens unsupervised on gym equipment, using half of the equipment as a playground and being charged nearly 100 a month for me and my wife with the only useable times being 5am or 9pm for a normal work schedule. The only honest plus side is the childcare.

Great gym, weight room is great and overall a clean place. Have tried a few classes and they are nice for everyone. Mondays boxmaster class with Mrs Karen is the best. She’s very welcoming and nice also makes the environment comfortable for everyone. Also the childcare while you workout is nice. All the ladies seem to enjoy watching the kids, it’s not rare to see a child being carried on their hips. If you have a little one with some separation anxiety Tyler is your guy! I’m only in there for 2 min to check my kids in and out but all the kids love him. Only reason for the 4 stars instead of 5 is the pool schedule. There is only a few random hours through out the day where they have lap swim available.

Beware: when those college kids leave for school they are not adequately staffed. I was upset today when I found out they put my sons last day of camp down for last Friday, instead of this coming Friday. But when I picked him up and saw there was like 2 people and all those kids...I felt 1000xs better. My son LOVES it here and he cried..but better safe than sorry.

I didn't even have to go to realize that the YMCA has lost it's mission AND its mind. $50/month for a single membership??!!? I could join 3 gyms for that price.
YMCA stands for Young Men's Christian Association and is, or at least was partially, a community outreach to the poor and homeless, giving them access to fitness facilities. Many YMCAs had limited housing facilities for the down and out. When I was homeless, I had a membership for $15/mo so I could shower before going to work at a fast food restaurant. I had full access to the facilities at that price.
Apparently, they've cut out both the "Christian" and the community outreach portions of their mission. This seems to be a for-profit institution and uses its good name to make , donating money to it. I was a supporter of this institution, donating money without being a member. They will never see a dime of my money ever again.

I literally would never recommend this place to anyone!!! I signed my son up for basketball for the second time here. This time just as last time when we go to the first practice the team has no coach! Last time it was very unorganized and I felt my son didn’t get the proper training so this time I immediately asked for a refund! I’ve been emailing and calling leaving messages there is no response it’s been 2 whole months I been trying to get a refund! Very unprofessional and unorganized I would never spend another penny with this company! Definitely feeling scammed!

When you think of the Y, you think of organization and professionalism, I’m not sure if it’s just this Y in Suffolk or all of them, since this is the only Y I’ve ever had any dealings with. This place is so unorganized, I pay the $95 fee for my son to join the basketball team and I’ve called in several times no one at the front desk ever knows anything the correspondence is terrible. I could sign my children up for rec teams for way cheaper and receive the same service if not better. Based on my experience here I would never recommend or deal with the Y ever again.

Would not send my child to the summer camp !! Signed my son up for a week of summer camp and when I went to the place there was only two staff there for a lot of children. One staff member was not attentive at all to the children, stayed on his cellphone the entire time I was there. Big kids and little kids mixed together, smaller kids were wandering off out of the enclosed area. Huge safety concerns. My son has severe allergies and asthma. They did not have his forms printed off and did not have a staff member that was MAT certified. Had I left my child there without asking questions and something would have happened, he could have landed in the hospital or worse!!! I spoke with operations director who apologized but that does not excuse what I saw and the safety of the facility !!! My son is extremely sadden that he can’t start camp! I saw a lot more, tried to reach CEO but he has not returned my call so I decided to leave this review for parents.

My complaint is all about the pool schedules. For example today is June 10th, a nice hot summer day. But the outdoor pool doesn't open until 4 pm! I'm retired and would like to go for a nice cool dip but it seems that the pool schedule excuse is tied to the public schools schedule for some reason. I don't care if attendance is low, my monthly fee isn't tied to how many kids are in the water. As a matter of fact I relish the thought of being able to go to a pool and enjoy it without a crowd of kids running around. It can actually be worse in the winter. In the winter they rent the pool out to the local schools swim teams, I pay a membership fee and expect reasonable access to the facilities. I didn't expect that my access would be restricted because they've sold it to somebody else. Sometimes you can't get in at all and other times you might get a lap lane, but the guy behind you won't. It's about the money, they're saving by cutting staff hours in the summer and selling my time in the winter.

The gym is really nice but not worth the price of a single person gym membership. If you're a happy family with 2 working adults I can definitely see the benefit. As a single part time father of one I think $78 a month is a bit ridiculous, but I'm stuck paying without many other options in the area.

My son spent two months here for swimming lessons. Because we were not members we paid $70 for the class. It was worth it. Staff are awesome, pool is cool, and awesome facility. The men's locker room is great. Shower area is nice. The downside is that there are men walking around naked in the locker room so it's no a good idea to let kids go in on their own.
A few men sat there talking to themselves, which was very scary.

I've been a member for a few years and loved their parent's night out program. Tonight I was planning to take my five year old daughter but we were turned away at 7:05 (no exaggeration) for missing the 7 o'clock deadline (traffic). Needless to say dinner was canceled, she was in tears and the rest of the night ruined. I know you have to curb tardiness but this was a bit extreme for a die hard YMCA fan. (Well until now) The one star rating isn't totally fair because I like a lot of other aspects but turning kids away and having inconsolable 5 year old took it there.

In the winter I signed my child up for basketball. Never got a call from the coach. I called and visited the center on three separate occasions to ask when were our practices held along with a meet and greet. They assured me I would hear from someone. A few days after the date that was advertised in the flyer I decided to go visit to inquire about the season again. Well needless to say we had missed the first practice. ( never heard from the coach). Sadly kids never had an end of season get together nor were they awarded trophies nor medals.
Fast forward, I signed my child up for summer camp. I called to confirm the start date. Well with no surprise to me they have lost our application. Beyond frustrated!
