In my 9 years learning Thapasya - School of Dance, I learned many choreographies from Mrs. Sudha. Her choreographies are beautiful and complex at the same time, giving the student a wonderful time learning and preforming them. I’ve attended dance classes with many different teachers but Ms. Sudha Krishnamurthy is definitely one of the best teachers I’ve ever had. She has hundreds of students and classes one after the other almost every single day, but she still pays attention to every single person and doesn’t take her stress out on us. Thapasya appeared on the International Stage at this year's Old Bowie Celebrates!, a festival which took place on 9th Street in Bowie, Maryland. After a rain delay of more than an hour, I had the privilege of introducing this amazing dance group.

The young women of Thapasya (pronounced Tha PÁ sia) Dance School performed several elegant dances from India. Their beautiful costumes were designed by the school’s Director, Sudha Khrisnamurthy. In my opinion it was the “prayerful” music and precision of the dancers that coaxed out the sun, which lasted for the rest of the afternoon.

My 6-year old daughter just finished her first year in Ms. Sudha's class and she learned a lot and enjoyed it immensely. I was looking for a traditional, classical Indian dance class for my daughter and was so happy a friend recommended Thapasya. Ms. Sudha's classes focus on learning the proper forms and names for each form, which I think is very important for students to learn. The dance recital (Samarparnam) at the end of the year was beautiful and it was very inspiring to see the older students and how skilled they are in their technique. You can tell Ms. Sudha really teaches from her heart and cares for each student and that this is her passion. My daughter can't wait to resume sessions in the fall and her younger sister will join her as well when she is old enough. Can't recommend enough!

My daughter has been learning Bharatantayam from Ms.Sudha for six months now and I can very confidently say that this is her most favorite class and that Ms.Sudha is her favorite teacher. Sudha is a very passionate teacher and takes a lot of personal interest in each of her students, also by treating them equally. She is trying to build a little community by trying to bring them together as much as she can. Samarpanam show in May 2022 was mind blowing! She is reachable all the time for parents to connect with. Mrs. Sudha's experience, expertise, attention to detail and love for the dance form can be clearly perceived in every session that she teaches. Despite the switch to the online format the past year with the pandemic, she remains just as focused and attentive with each child attending the classes.
Her focus on the Bharatnatyam fundamentals coupled with her passion for this dance form ensures that the children are taught to understand and retain the meaning of each basic routine/step further broken down into hand vs. feet movements first so that the kids assimilate and master them separately before moving onto more complex routines. Thapasya has been a gamechanger for my initially reluctant teen. Sudha understands the challenges of teaching a 2000 year old dance form to second gen Indian- American kids. She employs techniques that bridges the gap very effectively. Classes start with a series of stretches and warm ups that are a curated mix of yoga and dance poses and gradually moves to adavus making for a comprehensive session. Kids are taught to be proud of the heritage - expected to be disciplined and respectful but at the same time have a pleasant experience away from the rigors of school life and other activities.

Our daughter started learning Bharatanatyam dance at the age of 6 under the tutelage of guru Sudha Krishnamurthy of the Thapasya School of Dance.

We find Sudha to be an excellent teacher who always goes above and beyond for her students. Sudha is fun, energetic and very talented. She ensures that every student in the class understands what is being taught and can perform well in the class and on stage. There were several occasions where classes were cancelled due to inclement weather or students were unable to attend. In these situations, Sudha went out of the way to spend her personal time training students on weekends and weekdays either in person or via video conferencing. This really shows how committed she is for the success of her students.

Most dance compositions and songs are in Tamil language and many students in the US do not understand this language. Sudha takes time to explain the meaning of each word in the song and this helps the students understand the song, its purpose and to portray the expressions and emotions in the song on stage, flawlessly.

The dance class is right-sized and this allows Sudha to focus on each individual. Sudha brings the perfect amount of discipline and energy to motivate her students to become better dancers and also develop a passion for dance. Sudha has created a welcoming and enriching environment for dancers of all levels and their families to feel a sense of belonging and purpose at the dance class.

Sudha has worked hard to raise the awareness of Bharatanatyam in Maryland, Virginia and DC by visiting schools, performing at cultural events, international festivals etc. Sudha wants the best for her students. In summer, she arranges dance workshops that are conducted by renowned Bharatanatyam gurus from India. The camp is meant to instill joy and love for the classical arts and to up-skill the current capabilities of the students.

We are so grateful to Sudha and will recommend Thapasya School of Dance to anyone who wants to experience Bharatanatyam dance in the best way possible!

Our journey with Thapasya started a little over 3 years ago. Ms. Sudha Krishnamurthy, single handedly runs this wonderful school and teaches her students more than just Bharatanatyam. Our daughter started learning when she was five, and we like the self-discipline, dedication and all-round development in her. Smt. Sudha instilled the basic qualities required for becoming the best dancer - interest, motivation and practice, while imbibing qualities that differentiates between the better and the best dancer.
We come from a family with 'zero' knowledge on classical dance, and Thapasya was just the right find for us. Smt. My daughter has been learning Bharathanatyam from Sudha for the last three years. Sudha, a very hands-on teacher, started from the basics of this dance form and has taught the girls lovely choreos built upon the basics. I like how she stresses the importance of the correct techniques and challenges the girls outside their comfort zone.
