Went on a trip to Richmond and decided to visit this gym with a friend since I'm already a TRC member from NC. I didn't bring any equipment for top rope climbing so we only did bouldering while we were here. I typically climb 3-4 times a week and top out around V5 so I'm decent but not like a pro.
Pros:
The facilities here are nice, the walls are professionally built and there's a lot of non-climbing facilities too including cardio equipment, yoga space, a sauna, and a hot tub.
Cons:
The bouldering here was, quite frankly, terrible. I came in with realistic expectations after experiencing the bad routesetting at the gyms in the Triangle, and I assumed this one might be better since it's further away. Unfortunately, the routesetting here blows the other ones out of the water with how bad it is. The grading here has an *extreme* difficulty curve, to the point where a V2 here could be the equivalent of *at least* a V4 at another gym, and a large part of this is because the routes are barely technical and mostly just rely on having insane grip/arm strength. It's a gym, so be creative and set like it's a gym, not the outdoors. I struggled here as a frequent climber and was out of energy after just a few routes. There's also no air conditioning so circulation was entirely up to a pair of motion-activated fans in the center of the room which would shut off and then not activate again until you stood directly under them, so I'd have to keep walking back over every few minutes to turn them back on.

I love it here! The vibe is awesome and welcoming. Staff is quite pleasant and puts up with my bad dad jokes. The variety of routes is just great. I need to check out some of the other activities! Thank you!

This gym has a lot of potential, but it doesnβt get cleaned regularlyβif ever. Iβve been climbing for over a decade, and Iβve visited dozens of climbing gyms. This is by far the worst in terms of cleanliness. Expect to find hair clumps, bandages, dust bunnies, and moreβand theyβll be there every time you come back, in the exact same place. The bathrooms are also regularly out of basic necessities like toilet paper or hand soap.

Update 08/02/2025: Docking a star for the women's locker room and the rough climate control in the bouldering room (read: only fans that don't always run). In the women's locker room, one of the toilets is broken so that it doesn't flush all the way unless you flush it 3 times in a row, and most people don't do that. That toilet as well as one of the 3 showers is broken and have been since I started coming here about 5 months ago. At the time I thought it was a temporary thing, but apparently not! Also the trash is constantly overflowing to the point that paper towels are all over the floor around it. The bouldering room also gets really hot and humid which sucks because the top rope walls have really good climate control and airflow! Also I love the cold plunge but it seems like every time I try to use it lately, it's 50+ F which isn't great. I am happy that they turned up the temp in the sauna though!
Original review: This is my happy place. The people are wonderful, the route sections have a great variety and are changed weekly, and the recovery room is awesome. The cold plunge and sauna alone are worth a good chunk of the monthly membership. A variety of fitness and yoga classes are offered free for members throughout the week with Monday night yoga being my favorite. And there's a weight room to round out the full experience. It truly has everything I could want in a gym. I've made a wonderful group of friends at TRC and will likely remain a member for a very long time.

Great climbing gym- staff is friendly, they have bouldering, top rope, auto belays, and space for lead climbing. Also they have a yoga area, a full gym, and a recovery room that has a cold tub, sauna, and steam room.
Really good value for money if you use this place as a full time gym but also like climbing.

Excellent group birthday party, great communication, clear instructions and the most helpful party instructors and photographer! that kept the kids safe and on task! They even offered to carry things to and from my car, help me decorate or organize and did amazing job cleaning up for me!!! And a whole free photo album!! Worth $30 per kid by far (60 min of climbing time)

Awesome climbing gym. They have 3 different climbing sections, the tallest of which is 47 feet tall. They switch out a portion of the routes every week which keeps it interesting! There's also a weights room, yoga classes, sauna, and hot tub. The staff are really friendly and helpful. The best climbing gym in RVA, IMO.

I've been a member for about 6 years. About 5 years ago they added a huge section with large climbing walls which was a huge game changer for me. Definitely routes for all skill levels now.
Unfortunately, a couple big things have gone downhill for me which is making me question my memberships: namely cleanliness and climate control. There are some nights that just walking in the door it's so warm and muggy I lose my desire to climb before even getting my harness on.
The men's restroom is so gross I have to hold my breath while I'm in there. The urinals and toilets looks they haven't had a real clean in months. The urinals are often caked with brown bioflora and the bathroom floors are so gross especially around the toilets that I dont even want my shoes touching it.
This place seemed to hit it's peak about 4 years ago, now I don't know what's going on with it.

Triangle Rock Club has phenomenal climbingβtruly something for everyone, from beginners to seasoned climbers. The routes are well-set, the variety is great, and it's hands down the best climbing gym within a two-hour radius.
That said, the cleanliness has seriously gone downhill. The treadmills look like they've never been cleaned, thereβs dust and hair everywhere, and even the spa area has bugs hanging out in the corners. Itβs just... grimy. I really wish theyβd put more effort into deep cleaning to keep it as nice as it was when we first joined.
If cleanliness isnβt a big deal for you and you donβt have allergies, youβll probably love it here. But if you do? Might be frustrating. Hope they step it up because the climbing itself is top-notch.

I bring my 7yo daughter once a week or so. I love how all the ropes are set with carabiners and the routes are easily color-coded. Iβve climbed at other gyms my whole life but I really appreciate how easy Triangle makes it for kids. Nice amenities too.

Looking for a location for a group outing? I cannot recommend this location enough! We have been there for both my son's Bday as well as a youth group outing and the hospitality and attention to ensuring a fun time was had by all was second to none! In addition to having an room to store your stuff and layout food/refreshments for a party, they have an area for just your group to climb. For both of the events I went to, 2 staff members were dedicated to help belay, for the climbs that were not self-belay, as well as take pictures. They also put on a few fun games that the climbers both times thought were a blast. The center provided plates and utensils, tables and chairs and party favor bags.

Members get 2 free guests a month, cheap day pass for first timers, solid family atmosphere and upbeat music. What more could you want?
God I'm so sad I have to update this one. My partner and I needed to cancel our membership for medical reasons - already a sad occasion, climbers want to climb - and we both submitted cancellation requests on their website (the same way we've submitted successful freeze requests before).
They've not only continued to charge us. They've dodged calls, emails, voicemails, I've physically gone into the store twice - no easy feat right now - only to be told Kelsey and Samantha are in a meeting or out of the building. Both times I've left a note pleading for a follow-up call with the front desk employee. No response.
To their credit, the front desk employees have been very helpful. They've looked up our account, confirmed it was cancelled and should not have been billed, but unfortunately the folks responsible for refunding us are far less cooperative.
We've been members since the gym was phase-one only. I don't know if they can come back from this.

Terrible customer service. Canceled my membership with them months ago then last month they start charging me a different amount for no reason. Tried to resolve issue with them but no help. Eventually just had to place a stop payment and dispute the charges with my bank. I stayed with Triangle during COVID even when they were not open trying to do my part since I appreciated them before the pandemic. Just sucks when you feel like your generosity is being taken advantage of.

It's been a while since I've been this due to traveling for work. With that being said I don't mind the increase in price for a day visit but now as someone who climbs solo quite a lot, solo climbers don't have access to best part of the gym bc they removed all of auto belays on the bigger walls. If you're gonna have an increase in price, then all areas should be accessible to all climbers and not have to get stuck climbing with the little ones running all over the place.

Great for visiting, probably not good for a membership. Route variety seems to rely more on the features than the routes setting themselves. Lowest difficulty are too hard and highest difficulty are too easy. Routes rely on redundant moves. I recon fewer routes and more diverse route setters may inspire more creative route setting. Fitness area is more developed than most climbing gyms.

This place is amazing! It was a decent lifting gym, SO many fitness and yoga classes daily, great boulder area with fun, unique, and routes that get changed routinely, two different sized top rope walls with some auto-belay systems, and a large sauna and cold plunge.
The staff here are phenomenal as well. They greet you as well as wish you good day. They're helpful and and so nice! They will even answer questions you might have about certain routes if they're able to and you'll most likely get some words of encouragement to follow that.
They seem to have an after-school climbing session for kids daily. The climbing team does a fantastic job of doing the impossible and corralling all of them and getting them to follow climbing etiquette. They host climbing competitions but I'm not sure how often.
I really can't say enough about this place. Love the vibe completely.

A decent gym, but autobelays have been reduced, and routes can stay up without replacement for 5-6 months. If you plan to visit, definitely check how busy it is and if there are any events on their calendar. Otherwise, you can often find it horrifically crowded or with large sections unavailable for use.

The bouldering room is awesome and there is a good number of auto belays if youβre ever there alone and want to hit the walls. There is always a good amount of different route difficulties so finding something that suits your ability level is pretty easy and you wonβt get bored.
The staff are very welcoming and glad to help if you need assistance or have a question.
The weight room is a little small so it can get crowded but it has a decent amount of equipment for cardio and strength building.
There is a good number of classes scattered throughout the day so itβs pretty easy to find something that works with your schedule.
They have a ton of events every month and they write them on the glass wall of the bouldering room and whoever writes them on there has the coolest hand writing.

Still the best gym in town. The staff are solid but many of the best were pushed out unfortunately. Everyone climbing is more friendly than at the peak gyms in my experience. I also think the setting is better here, but not as much of a difference as it used to be.

I recently had the unfortunate experience of visiting Triangle Rock Club and let me tell you, it was a complete disaster from start to finish. I'd rather crawl up a gravel driveway than subject myself to such a dreadful place again.
First and foremost, the boulder route setting was like a cruel joke played by someone with a twisted sense of humor. The routes were not only uninspiring but downright terrible. Trying to find a flow was like attempting to waltz through a minefield blindfolded. Whoever is responsible for setting these routes must have been aiming for frustration, not fun.
As if the terrible climbing experience wasn't enough, the staff managed to make the situation even worse. I've been to my fair share of gyms, but never have I encountered such a bizarre and unhelpful bunch. Asking about equipment felt like entering the twilight zone. Apparently, providing Grigris is a luxury that this gym can't afford, and inquiring about an ATC was met with a nonchalant shrug. It's almost as if they're actively trying to discourage people from climbing.
Now, let's talk about cleanliness β or rather, the lack thereof. The boulder area had the distinct aroma of stale chicken nuggets, a smell I never thought I'd associate with a place meant for physical activity. And if that wasn't repulsive enough, there was a patch of vomit in the main area that seemed to have been left there as some sort of sick decoration. It sat untouched for what felt like an eternity, turning the gym into a breeding ground for all things unpleasant.
Overall, my visit to TRC was an exercise in disappointment and frustration. I would strongly advise against subjecting yourself to this nightmare of a facility unless you have a strange affinity for terrible routes, rude staff, and the distinct scent of old fast food. Save your time and money β go climb elsewhere.

I have been to many climbing gyms on both the east and west coast. I primarily boulder, and occasionally top rope. This gym was the worst Iβve been to, and I donβt plan on returning. Overall, the vibe was off, discouraging, and difficult to have fun.
- the bouldering route setting is erratic and feels clunky. My gf and I couldnβt get into any kind of flow with the routes. We both came away with minor injuries too. We typically climb in the v3-v5 range, but were struggling with many v1-v2 climbs here.
- there was a lack of lighting in the boulder area; it felt like a dungeon with poor air ventilation.
- the waiver signing process took a long time
- it was crowded with children who were not respecting other climbers on the wall
There were some other incidents with the facilities, but I chalk those up to one-time events (hopefully). I went in with high hopes, but it was difficult to stay optimistic about this gym as my experience unfolded.

Visited a few friends in RVA, and I always wanted to check out the climbing gyms here, so I had o give Triangle a visit!
Boulders:
Plenty of boulder routes and the walls were left plenty of space across one another. The route grading here is fair for the most part. There are some route setters that set a couple of V1s that I didn't agree with, almost kind of gatekeeping beginner climbers from attempting climbs due to the route set. But overall, plenty of awesome routes to try.
Top Rope:
Top rope area is across the bouldering area, and its really nice. Plenty of walls with a fair amount of auto belays. Grading here was pretty fair from what I saw.
The Gym:
Gym area was very nice. Very clean and spacious, with a ton of quality equipment to go around. Also a nice perk here is that there is a sauna and an ice bath in one area!
Overall, a 4/5! Very solid climbing gym. Nice boulder/Top Rope walls and staff here are friendly! I'll be back for sure.

This is a very impressive climbing gym. I was visiting from out of town and came in solo to get a climb in, didnβt know what to expect. The space is huge, tons of routes for bouldering, top rope, and lead. Everything is clean, organized, well lit, and overall just very comfortable. The amenities are outstanding. Large fitness center, nice big yoga room, sauna, steam room, hot tub, cold plunge tank, and more. The staff was really friendly and made it so easy. I could have stayed all day and would be at this gym constantly if I lived in Richmond. Definitely an incredible facility and resource to the climbing community in RVA. Thanks for the hospitality!

This is my home gym now, so I can write an essay!! The staff members are all kind, the community Iβve found here is authentic, and the frequent re-setting of the bouldering walls keeps me on my toes (literally). I recently visited Triangle Rock Club indoor climbing with my family, and I must say, I had a fantastic experience. The facility is spacious, and the staff is incredibly friendly, creating a welcoming atmosphere for climbers. While everything was great, I believe adding a few more auto belays would further enhance the climbing experience, particularly for solo climbers or those seeking variety. In summary, Triangle Rock Club offers an excellent climbing environment, and I believe this suggestion could contribute to its continuous improvement.

Iβve been here thrice now (and once at another Triangle in KY) and definitely want to go back for more! Iβve been climbing just under a year now and usually boulder since thatβs the only option in my town, so itβs nice having harnessed climbing options.
I do feel like they sandbag the bouldering area pretty heavily, because there are no true beginner routes. Even the VB routes are harder than what Iβd have been able to do when I first started, and itβs made it difficult to take newbie climbers there. Iβd suggest making the beginner problema more like ladders with a few small twists for those who are very new, unconfident, and a bit weaker to enjoy, and do whatever you want with the upper grades.
I am also unsure about how the auto-belays change over time. In the past there have been several auto options in the tall room (useful when I climb alone or when Iβm with a friend who canβt belay), but today when I went there were none. I was kind of disappointed as this took away my chance to climb the tall walls, which I very much enjoy when Iβm in town and get the chance to visit. Are they coming back? I saw another reviewer say theyβd been permanently removed, but I hope not!
When Iβve been there at the same time as kids, the kids also run around kind of unattended, which is kind of annoying. I donβt mind sharing the space with kids and I love that they have fun climbing, but some of them kind of take over certain areas and make it hard to climb, especially if Iβm doing auto-belay and only have a handful of options to begin with. I went to the bouldering area once when there was a group of kids and nobody was stopping them from running around or standing directly under me while I climbed! I donβt want to squish them falling off those sandbagged climbs! Parents and teachers need to attend their kids and teach them safety rules.
Overall a great facility with lots of options and fun climbs with fun names, though. Love those route names! I just wish there were better options for total beginners and better safety and gym etiquette training for the younger ones.

From Bryan that took my call before we came suggesting we complete our waiver on-line to save time; to Kaleb who greeted us along with all the insight he could share and welcoming attitude and getting us started;, to Sam who walked us threw clipping in and out giving us safety lessons, demo, and suggestions. Our experience was amazing for a rainy Saturday. We'll be back for yoga, maybe a gym class and that hot tub. So glad we found out about you all on things to do in Richmond! This spot is amazing with so much to offer. That 50 foot wall is in our futures. 5 out of 5 stars. We loved our experience. Thanks!!!!

Attended the soundbath class with Rick amd it was very relaxing. I've been to other sound bath sessions and this one was really good. From the relaxing music to the peaceful energized atmosphere, I would recommend anyone to attend Triangle Rock Club.

Have gone twice here as a Big Brothers/Big Sisters activity and the staff has been so patient and helpful with us (true novices). While the pricing is definitely reasonable for a day of climbing, would love the ability to purchase some timed passes if that ever gets evaluated. Looking forward to more trips in the future and can't shout out the front desk enough for being so great.

The staff is really friendly! The front desk is helpful and focuses on customer service. The route setters were open to feedback from their members and the routes are great! The yoga teachers do a great job too. The facilities are really nice! I love the hot tub and lounge area. My only critique is that I wish they had year sign ups year around for membership. Update: there are a lot more routes on the walls now, which is awesome. Welcoming environment and climbers. :)

Rock climbing is fun, but I will definitely have to advise: expect to be treated only with tolerance if you are Black. It FELT as though no one had ever seen or interacted with a Black person before. I personally was not greeted, which is okay because they assumed I was joining five others who arrived sooner. The young lady at the front desk, who I believe first name started with an O seemed to become irritated that we were crowded between the desk and stairs after paying. She condescendingly rushed us to the lounge area, then down to the rock wallsβ¦ Yet, had a customer service representative walked us through their entire process, everyone could have been on the same page prior to receiving equipment, we definitely would not have been in the lobby so long. After bringing us downstairs, she brought us to one wall, pointed out the ones we could climb and did not bother showing us how to belay like the video stated someone would. None of us wanted to belay being such a large group, but I would have appreciated the offer of being shown since I do anticipate visiting the facility again. Iβm going to go back because I enjoy the challenge of the activity and had prepared myself for an unwelcoming entranceβ¦ But yes, definitely learn to work with larger crowds especially when you anticipate a peak time of other folks coming in.. And donβt show such a discomfort if a large group of Black people gradually pour in. Hopefully, the next visit will be better.

I had a great time! It was my first time rock climbing since I was a kid. The instructions were clear and easy to follow. I just wish I could have climbed next to my kid with the auto baley. I'll definitely be back for that full body workout.

Fantastic facilities and really attentive instructors. I was very scared because I'd never rock climbed before, but they helped me and it was quite exciting and challenging enough but not so much that I dared not do it again. Our boys were thrilled and worn out ( a good thing).

Waitβ¦ no more 5 day passes? 10 day passes only save you $2 a pop? I donβt remember it being this expensive π Additionally, as someone who struggles to find belay partners, the loss of tall wall auto belays is a huge loss.
