I have a physical job and a fairly active lifestyle outside of work, with lots of walking and rock climbing already built into my routine.

That being said, I had been noticing lately that I needed to introduce some weight training to build more core and upper body strength — both to keep up with the demands of my work and hobbies without injuring myself, and to stave off osteoporosis, which runs in my family.

I found Brent earlier this month through a Meetup group, and right away, I really appreciated his approach to working with busy people to squeeze in home-based workouts around a packed schedule.

Some of my previous barriers to trying weight training had been: 1) finding time to routinely get to the gym or strength/fitness/circuit classes, given that my schedule fluctuates so much and
2) not knowing what exercises to do, nor how to do them, especially in a way that would be safe and help me to avoid injuring myself again. (Yes, that has happened with past attempts to introduce strength into my routine.)

Brent helped me with ALL of that. He designed a customized plan that allowed me to cycle through several different home-based workouts for my core and upper body, as well as an option to build strength at the gym when I have extra time to make the trek. He wasn't overly prescriptive about set days or times or how many reps or or how much weight to lift; I really appreciated that he instead provided ranges for reps and weight that would allow me to start slowly and safely and build more strength sustainably over time.

This flexibility and customization — along with his stellar communication and frequent check-ins and encouragement — has empowered me to find and maintain a consistent strength-training routine three times a week for the first time in my life.

I'm happy to report that I'm already feeling stronger — and with no injuries or pain! I'm so grateful to Brent for his guidance and encouragement. Highly recommend him if you need flexible and functional fitness coaching support!

Brent is a great coach! Before starting we had an intake form and phone chat to discuss my goals, and using that he put together a workout and nutrition plan to follow each week, as well as minor goals such as step count and sleep for each day. Every Sunday we had a check-in call to recap how the previous week went and discuss any changes we would want to make for the coming week. He also sent out a check-in form every weekend, and based on that along with my logged meals, workouts, and steps, would send out a short video at the start of the week discussing my progress so far and suggesting things to focus on.

For me as someone with minimal fitness training experience, one of the biggest barriers was not knowing what I should be doing. Brent is very approachable and happy to answer any questions, and by putting together a routine for me made it very easy to get to the gym, follow the steps, and go home. He also brings a lot of enthusiasm to his coaching - I really appreciated his motivational texts on workout days to hype me up before I went.

I take fitness very seriously. My father has two fused vertebrae and my mom has scoliosis, so I always make time to go to the gym. I started with Brent's coaching as a complete beginner to structured workouts, and after around a month it had quickly become one of my favorite parts of the week. Having just that extra little impetus to start out, combined with guidance on what to start out with, has completely taken away the anxiety and guesswork of what I should be doing. Brent creatively works around my chronic and acute injuries to form a workout that is safe for my body to do to carefully rebuild strength, while staying within his scope as a personal trainer.
