About the Club

Terrain started as a private gym in Bellingham, 2007. We provide professional coaching and programming for athletes from a variety of backgrounds. Some athletes come to us new to any gym based training wanting to enhance their strength and overall conditioning. Others are in a profession that requires them to maintain a high level of fitness. Regardless of background, we believe having something you love to do outside is much more satisfying to train for. We want you ready to accomplish, engage and enjoy.

Our sessions are preplanned and available to our members when off site. Whether you’re a First Responder getting it done at your station, or not wanting to lose ground while traveling.

My 11 year old son has been attending training sessions at Terrain, Bellingham, since last Fall. He has improved his strength and conditioning as a result and in very large part to the bi-weekly sessions. The training is specific to his age group and abilities. He is having fun and looks forward to each workout, which is a testament to the program. He is learning to lift free weights and perform body weight exercises the right way, which is a critical skill for a young athlete. After a short break for soccer season, he will start back with Terrain this summer.

I’ve been with Terrain for years. Tonia and her team have curated a unique experience unlike any other gym in town. There is multiple week programming to build on and stay motivated but also it’s easy enough to just drop in to classes. The athletes are great too, you’ll see the same faces year after year. The personal training is what I’ve bumped up to, three days a week. Lots of flexibility for what you need. Love the programming that can be curated for your outdoor seasonal experiences too.

Been going to Terrain consistently for a few years. Tonia has changed our bodies (my wife and I) and our lives! Strength training is a vital component of good fitness, and Tonia guides you through that in a safe, fun, effective way. The group environment is great for pushing you forward, and the classes are always varied but with a progressive goal in mind. The gym is well equipped with everything you need. I can't say enough amazing things about my first few months at Terrain. As a trail runner, I've known I need to add strength training and could not have found a better fit. Terrain is by far the best “gym” I have ever joined. I emphasize gym because it’s more than just a place to stay and get fit. It’s a community and an experience. Tonia and her trainers actually get to know you to make personalized suggestions within the currated workout sessions. There is purpose that goes in to the multi-week long series, which keeps a goal in mind but than changes after a few weeks to keep you engaged. As mentioned there is a sense that you are getting a one-on-one training session but within a non-judgmental group settings to help feed off other’s energy. If I can’t make a session there is always the open gym to pound out what I need on my own. Shower makes it convenient so I can head straight to work after.

After seven years of CrossFit which resulted in numerous injuries, I needed to find something new that could help me achieve my goals of strength, mobility and endurance without destroying my body. I've been with Terrain for several years now and can say it continues to check all those boxes for me.

What I particularly like is Tonia's (owner) approach to programming. Each of the 4-8 week sessions she puts together is well thought out with clearly defined progressions and regular assessments along the way. Tonia is very transparent about her programming and is happy to talk through with you the goals and objectives at any time.

Additionally, Tonia is very adept at putting high quality modifications in place for you. I experienced a significant wrist injury while mountain biking over a year ago that involved surgery and months of rehab. Tonia worked closely with me to put programming in place to meet my limitations during that time.

Considering all of the above, I highly recommend Terrain for anyone looking for a top-tier gym. The membership prices are worth every penny.

If you are looking for a gym experience that will challenge you both mentally and physically regardless of your current fitness level, this is it. I have been going off and on for several years now and my breaks are usually due to significant life changes - however I keep coming back because when I do I become so much stronger mentally and physically. Yes I have to regain some lost ground, but the programming Tonia has and her ability to adjust based on a person's need is second to none. I'm recently back from a 2 year break and within 2 months have regained all my lost progress and feel great! I can't recommend highly enough!

I've been a member of multiple training gyms over the past 20+ years, and an owner of multiple yoga studios. Based on my experiences, Terrain (Tonia) is outstanding on multiple fronts.

The training programs are well thought out based on Tonia's many years of education, coaching and continually growing her knowledge and skill sets. I've seen amazing, unexpected results during my time here. And, more importantly, being a 53 year old outdoor enthusiast, without incurring injuries that sideline me from my passions.

Each workout has a specific purpose. Strength building based on individual markers, with focus on proper form over weight amount. Conditioning workouts that are very tough without sacrificing safety. Other training gyms I've gone to over the years, often used heavy olympic style lifting within a metabolic conditioning workout that places a premium on speed and amount of weight over safe training. Which led to poor form and multiple injuries.

From my fitness boutique owner's cap, I really appreciate Terrain's culture. Tonia obviously spends time mentoring her staff on the details of all movements and workouts. Which results in consistency among the coaches when teaching movements and/or giving feedback.

Finally, I'm most appreciative of Terrain's culture. There is a genuine and client focused/friendly atmosphere. They definitely make you feel welcomed and valuable.

Terrain is a gym where the trainers never, ever phone it in. Every day, week, and season is intentional. Tonia at Terrain has been absolutely brilliant at training around an ongoing shoulder injury for me. She wrote out an individualized plan that has allowed to me gain strength while I wait for my orthopedic consults. In addition we have worked through imbalances from an old ankle injury and rehabbed a torn meniscus. Tonia understands that the gym is a means to more fully enjoying your outdoor activities and not the goal itself.
