About the Club

Compassionate instruction focused on classical Iyengar Yoga. Tara has been teaching Yoga for over 25 years and is a certified Iyengar Yoga teacher(CIYT) as well as a certified Yoga therapist through the International Association of Yoga Therapist (IAYT). She has traveled to northern and southern India to study yoga and attended the Iyengar institute in Pune several times. Tara’s teaching style is knowledgeable, patient, firm, challenging and kind. She teaches all ages and abilities, especially those suffering from overall stiffness and other physical imbalances. She enjoys teaching small semi-private classes, because of the individual challenges and solutions that arise during the class. Encouraging students to connect the mind to the body

If you want a class that goes through the motions, this is not it. If you want a class where you actually learn about the poses and grow in your practice, this is it. Tara's classes are methodical and well choreographed, with each pose building upon the previous for deeper opening and growth. Tara's teaching style is straight forward--she demonstrates each pose step by step and explains in detail. She then watches us as we practice and repeat, assisting and recommending alternate poses as needed. I appreciate the slowness of her class as it gives me time to feel my body open and receive and to connect my mind to my body and breath.

I am grateful to learn from such an inspiring, dedicated and knowledgeable teacher , Tara. Tara’s care for detail and encouragement to improve one step at a time makes me motivated to deepen my practice with understanding without succumbing to my expectations of nailing it quickly.
Thank you Tara for the knowledge, practice and excellence you bring through your teaching for Iyengar Yoga.

I've been studying under Tara for roughly two years now, taking both weekly online classes and her monthly workshops. Even though I live far from the studio I find the drive out to see her worth it. She creates a nurturing environment in her classes, I never feel like she forced me or anyone else into an uncomfortable or dangerous position. She is very understanding of yoga anatomy and how everyone's bodies are different and have different strengths and limitations, and she is able to guide you to your edge while not pushing you past that where you might injure yourself. I always feel very safe and comfortable taking classes with her. She herself is also an active student, learning to deepen her knowledge of the asanas and other limbs of yoga. She will bring back fresh perspectives and teachings that she's gathered from her own journeys and incorporate them into our classes, so they never get stale. I love iyengar yoga because of it's emphasis on form and alignment, and use of props. I feel iyengar yoga is the best way to learn yoga without risking injuries, you will really learn the asanas here, especially under Tara's expert guidance.

Highly recommended! I have attended the weekly Zoom class for a couple years now - Tara is very knowledgeable and a steady, inspiring teacher. She uses props and alternate poses to individualize instruction, allowing for physical/body differences. The in-person workshops are engaging & enjoyable. I feel lucky to have found University District Yoga when I was a total yoga newbie!

Best yoga in town! My body feels renewed, light and free after a session with Tara. I injure myself easily when I do Yoga by myself, it even happens at some Yoga classes, but never here. Yoga is the best medicine for chronic body issues and pain. Tara's deep understanding and insight into each asana (pose) will give your body the best stretch and the best healing. Yoga is not just a body workout, only few teachers can go deeper and impart the subtleties and integrate the mind and spirit. Learning Yoga with Tara is learning it the right way. Happy to have found univeristy district yoga!

I have taken gentle yoga classes from Tara Bernstein for several years. She has a dedicated following because of her care and attention to her client's individual limitations and needs. But that doesn't mean she doesn't challenge us! When a class is over, parts of my body that were sore feel much better. Tara has successfully transitioned her class to on-line and I am grateful to still enjoy weekly yoga.

Tara’s depth of knowledge and experience, together with her attention to the needs of her students and her patience, make her a most wonderful teacher and translate well to her online classes. I would recommend her to anyone at any age. Her classes have helped me immensely — especially in this time of covid 19! Thank you, Tara!

I have been practicing Iyengar Yoga for 30 years, and Tara has been my primary teacher for the last 8 years. When the CoronaVirus hit, I worried about losing my weekly class with Tara. However, She set up Zoom classes, and I am delighted that they are of the same high quality as her in-person teaching. Her Online classes feature great attention to detail, very well thought-out sequences of poses, and the same atmosphere and focus as in person. It feels like Tara is right in my living room with me. She explains and demonstrates each pose, and then watches each of us, correcting and encouraging. The only thing missing is the hug at the end of each class. I highly encourage anyone thinking of trying online yoga to take a class from Tara. You wont regret it.

I am a long-time Iyengar yogini who has been very fortunate to have had only a few, but exclusively, senior-level teachers. My first was the renowned Felicity Green (now mostly retired), and my second was Ingela Abbot (Yoga NW in Bellingham) who I apprenticed with in her teacher training. I also took workshops with visiting teachers including Patricia Walden and Donald Moyer. My third teacher was Tara Bernstein at U-District Yoga. After I moved from Bellingham, there were no Seattle teachers I knew of at the time I felt confident with until I found Tara. She is 100% sincere in her commitment to her craft as a teacher and lifestyle. Yoga is a lifetime learning process and I can count on Tara’s ability to show the deeper level that I need, and where I would not go without her guidance. Tara is a world-class Iyengar instructor right here in Seattle.
