Great gym! Staff is helpful and knowledgeable. They change the hold every couple of months so there is something new all the time.
They also have a gym on the 1st floor and a bouldering area upstairs.
The class offerings are great with solid staff keeping an eye on everything.

Although the setup looks nice, the process for approval of belay and lead climbing seems random and geared towards getting people paying for lessons. Climbers approved for lead climbing at multiple other places were told incidental issues during test disqualified them. Will not return. Will go to other area gyms for lead climbing, etc

We had our daughter's 8th birthday here yesterday. Easily one of the best birthday parties we've ever had here. The facilities are clean, and the entire staff was warm, welcoming, and professional. The young adults who served as belayers were very knowledgeable, friendly, and fantastic when it came to the children at our daughter's party. I can't say enough good things about the entire experience.
We can't wait to come back and have both of our daughters get more climbing time in.

A branch location of the first indoor rock climbing gym. Bouldering, top roping, and lead climb. Also has auto belay. Staff nice. Supportive climber community. Also has treadmills, free weights, showers, lockers. Parking limited during busy hours. Free Wifi. Can get punch cards to save a little bit of money if you do pay as you go. Can get monthly pass, or yearly membership. Great for kids and adults alike. Has classes for belaying, lead climbing, and certifications. Can rent climbing shoes, holsters if you need them.

First time visiting after a small break and it was really disappointing to see nothing lower than a 5.10c in any of the dihedral sections. There has previously been a better range of climbs in those areas (5.9 and above) so not sure why they chose to reset those areas without keeping a similar range available.
Re: owner reply of "distribution of routes change all the time", sure, but there are multiple dihedral sections, not just one or two. Setters could easily ensure they're covering a wider spread of grades in these "specialty" areas to keep them more inclusive, as they do with the rest of the gym.

Great start! The setting was awesome and the wall are super tall. The fitness area is still a work in progres with limited equipment and who knows when the bouldering will be opened. I'm sure as soon as this stuff gets done I'll be back and give it a couple more stars. Edit: fitness area and training area updates are awesome!

We've travelled extensively all over the world and have been to lots of different climbing gyms. This has got to be up there with one of the best! The route setting is so creative (some of the best we've experienced in a gym), true to grade, and fun to climb! The holds are grippy and not overused. There's a good amount of auto belays, nice high walls and a great variety of grades both for leading and top roping. We didn't sample the bouldering upstairs, but great to have the option. Strength and conditioning area is small but well equipped with everything you need. Toilets are modern and clean with showers.
I wish we lived near this gym!!!

Absolutely hated this place. Total waste of $70. Not staffed with workers meant we couldn't do some of the activities. We could only climb the walls in the little kid area. Should have just went to a park. Won't be back. Major disconnect from what we thought this place was.

My favorite gym in Seattle by far. Other gyms feel a little too commercial or the opposite and are too small. This one is the perfect mix. Edgeworks and SBP have a Seattle chill vibe but VWN has a very warm welcoming atmosphere. The gym has its quirks but is still by far my favorite.

Excellent place to come get your workout in. Friendly staff and good route setters.
Depending on when you show up its almost impossible to climb now with all the classes and events the gym has going on now.
The drive used to be worth it when you could come in and climb whenever you wanted, now its only worth it if you have a partner and 1/2 / the gym isn't shut down or occupied by classes.

Horrible experience for my children. We love climbing but this was not a family friendly environment. The customer service experience we had with our kids was very negative and left them both in tears. They do a βquick belay checkβ but then offer no options to be checked out by staff if they donβt like the way you do it. The manager on staff did not make eye contact and would not speak to us and it was clear that she just didnβt want to deal with my children and myself who drove 2 hours to get there. The walls look fun but we left with a refund and 2 very upset kids. One star for customer service and a bad atmosphere for children. Whoever the manager on staff was today should be fired. I worked at a climbing wall for years and have never been treated so poorly. It was truly shocking!

Customer service is alright, I took the family to go climbing and they wanted to do auto belayed top rope, and it wasnβt till we had gone through all the hassle of them trying to find our waivers and getting our gear that they said that the family could not do auto belayed top rope climb without doing a belaying course which is 55$ and they could not do it the same day, and itβs infuriating because for auto belay climbing the only thing you need to know is how to open a carabiner and how to put on a harness which they can explain in 20 seconds without making the customer pay for a course that is useless to the customer because we were not intending to do regular top rope at all. We were very disappointed.

The Seattle location is my home gym, but I prefer this gym and head here when I have more time. The bouldering area upstairs is several times larger than the Seattle location and has a great variety of routes. My only complaint here is that their slab and overhang areas are lacking. The straight/relatively straight walls dominate here.
Top rope area is large and has a handful of auto belay setups. Very high ceilings and good variety.
Gym area isnβt huge but has what youβd need.
Staff is friendly and helpful.

We did not even get IN to go climbing. We asked to look at the kids area to see if it was even viable for nervous littles and we had to sign a waiver just to see it.
We thought it was strange, we just wanted one parent to run up and peep at it - but we said βokβ.
The problem is, the waiver system didnβt work after we filled the whole thing out the front desk said βwell is didnβt go throughβ. So as weβre trying to understand what went wrong so we donβt make the same mistake twice, the front desk is acting put upon- as if we did it on purpose to annoy them.
The exasperation and inability to help us prompted our βnever mindβ. They didnβt apologize or try to fix the problem, not even as we said βitβs okay, today wonβt work outβ.
Coming from 15+ years in the service industry, weβre never mean or rude with those βservingβ or helping us, and to act as though we specifically came in to annoy them was disappointing.
We had 4 people ready to climb and rent gear, and if the kids liked it, we wouldβve signed up for a membership - we talked it up with them the whole way here.

I only recently re-discovered this gym because we were looking to practice offwidth crack climbing. It has all the normal stuff as far as bouldering, toproping and leading steep plastic. Plus it has a well equipped gym with free weights and aerobic machines: stair steppers and ellipticals.
Unlike many gyms they still have auto-belays. These arenβt dangerous in and of themselves, theyβre well engineered. But due to user error and lawsuits they have been removed from many gyms.
But what really makes this gym special, and worth the trip...is the cracks.
Starting with the smallest, they have a ring lock crack that varies in width from half an inch to three quarters of an inch. That means rattly fingers for small hands, and locker fingers for big hands.
Next is a standard yellow number 2 camalot sized crack. This is perfect hands for most people. And it has an auto-belay so you can cruise up and down without a partner.
Next up are two variations on a blue number 3 camalot crack. With my XL sized hands, I was able to get easy steeples or tight fists in both of them. My friend with small hands struggled with these three to four inch cracks.
But the best crack of all, especially if you are training for Moabβs Indian Creek is the camalot number five crack. I stuck my big meat hooks in this five inch crack hoping for at least a marginal fist jamβ¦but it was nothing but air. It was the proverbial hotdog in a hallway scenario. This crack is also in a corner, with one of the fist cracks nearby if you need to cheat. Anyway, itβs a fantastic size for learning hand fist stacking.
The crack is both too wide and too narrow to get any kind of heel toe jam. Initially neither of us could make uphill progress. After much struggle we found that we could get a secure no hands jam by sticking our left leg in up to the thigh. Then we jammed our right leg in up to the knee. With both legs deep in the crack and sort of opposing each other, we could let go with our hand fist stacks long enough to slide them up.
This was a full body, heart pounding workout. But wow, such good practice! This comes very close to some of the 5.11 offwidth nightmares at Indian Creek.
Beyond that, they had the usual wide selection of cubbies and lockers. They also had some free programmable electronic lockers for small items like phones and keys.
Vertical World was the first climbing gym in America. I remember going there in 1988. Iβm really glad to see they are still running a tight ship!

I donβt usually write reviews but my familyβs had 2 exceptional Rock Climbing Experiences at Vertical World North with Saul, so I had to share! Saul quickly learned all of our names and gauged our skill and ability levels. He has a great way of encouraging and challenging each person while sharing his wealth of knowledge. The rock climbing experience, that Saul has provided us, has made us all excited to learn more and sign up for the introduction to rock climbing class as soon as we can. I would highly recommend the Rock Climbing Experience at Vertical World with Saul for families with young children, all the way up!

Good route setters and wall features, so there are always interesting routes. The ceilings are really high - 55 ft - so the routes are long and give a good workout with out the constant up an down common at climbing gyms with short ceilings. The weights and exercise area is nice.
Can be crowded in evenings. I prefer mornings. Timing your visit to when it's not popular makes parking and everything easier. Alternatively, if you want to meet people, come when it's hopping!

I absolutely love this place! I am a Camp Director, and took my campers here every week this summer. The kids absolutely love the cave in the bouldering section. And as an adult, I've really enjoyed coming here on my own time. I'm also a queer person and feel like I can identify this place as queer-friendly. The staff are wonderful, always friendly and laid back. The climbing opportunities are immense and so much fun, and they offer classes! Staff is really great. Really bad hours for a gym and no after hours access that a lot of climbing gyms have. Top ropes are also not double wrapped. The gym is small though this is more of a Seattle Area problem since there really aren't any nice climbing gyms here that have lead walls. Membership is also restricted to only this gym which not a lot of other gyms.

Update 7/12/23: the kids have loved it so much, we go once or twice a month for the kids night out. They have so much fun and have gained a lot of confidence in their climbing. The place always seems very clean, and the staff is very friendly and helpful.
Weβve only been once, for a Kids Night Out event, but my boys (6&9) had a BLAST! Dropped them off and left them for two hours; they learned the basics of rock climbing and were let loose in the gym to climb. The price for this was very reasonable, and the event is held twice a month; weβve already signed up for another one! Itβs great exercise for high energy kids!

It was my first time at Vertical World North. I'd say I miss Vertical World Redmond.
Pros:
1. Newer
2. Bigger and more routes
3. Harder routes (not sure if it belongs to pros or cons)
4. The bathroom is big with nice showers
Cons:
1. The parking lot is not well paved
2. Hard to find parking spots
3. Doesn't have lockers with a lock. Have to bring locks ourselves.
4. The bathroom only has one air blower, but no paper towels. And it's hard to tigger the air blower.
But anyway, I'm sure I'll keep visiting vertical world, so I hope they can take the feedbacks, open more gyms on the east side and do better business.
