Hands down the best martial arts training. My kids started 5 years ago during Covid and Mr. Jay and his crew make it fun and challenging. I would highly recommend Alexander's Martial Arts for either in-person or online training.

We’ve been a part of the Alexander’s family for about 7 1/2 years.
My oldest son started when he was 6 and after a couple of years, I decided to start taking classes since I was already there multiple times a week watching him and the beginning adult class was conveniently scheduled at or near the same time. Flash forward and now both of us are black belts and frequently assist with and/or teach our own classes. Teaching has added a whole new challenge but one we both have embraced and we enjoy passing along what we have learned to the next group of kids and adults. If you are looking a for a martial arts school that feels like a family then this is your place.

We’ve been a part of the Alexander’s MA family for 2 years now. It started with our daughter who wanted to try it, then quickly fell in love with it. Our son was next and he’s been going strong for almost a year now. Then I joined, and as a 45-yr old, I feel great! The instructors are well versed, patient, and express the right amount of direction and dictation when needed. I highly recommend Alexander’s MA to anyone wishing to start or continue their karate journey.

We took our son for a month, the instructors are great but it didn’t work out with our son’s school schedule. It was a 30 minute drive through traffic to get there from where we live. We keep getting billed ~$200/per month and the owner refuses to give us any money back for the time we have not been and do not plan to go back. The manager and owner are very hard to get ahold of and have no intent to work with us to provide a refund for the time we have not been there. Pathetic business practices. Do not take your kids here if you think there’s a chance your life situation may change after you sign up. I’d be happy to provide a good review of this place if they provide a partial refund for the time we have not been there but they keep auto drafting our bank account. I’m sure they need the money.

Please be careful signing up here. They are very sly in how they present their packages to you. Once you sign up, you are unable to cancel your child’s lessons for any reason. We ended up having to pay for several months even though our son was no longer attending. Buyer Beware!

My 10 year old Grandson attends Alexander’s Martial Arts in Madison, Alabama and we are very impressed with the kindness and encouragement that the students receive, the encouragement to do there best with nothing but positive reinforcement. We would very much recommend them to any family that is thinking of starting martial arts. Thanks Alexanders you guys rock!

My daughter has been training at Alexander's Martial Arts in Madison, and we couldn’t be happier! From day one, the warm and welcoming atmosphere made her feel right at home.

The instructors are fantastic—they're not only skilled but also really care about the students. They take the time to teach techniques clearly, which has helped my daughter build her confidence and skills. I love how they emphasize respect and personal growth along with the martial arts training.

The facility is clean and well-maintained, providing a safe space for kids to learn and grow. The classes are engaging and fun, covering a range of martial arts styles that keep my daughter excited to attend.

Traditional drills and katas that are taught and performed help build skills and endurance which I greatly appreciate. The instructor, Mr. Jeff, demonstrates the practical application of the drills and katas which in turn helps to improve learning and technique. Great place to learn and develop martial arts skills.

AMA is simply amazing! My daughter attended the AMA at Winchester Rd. location from 2017-2020. What she was taught at this location has become priceless. The instructors there were phenomenal and we are forever thankful for them. You always wonder if what the kids are being taught are actually being learned. I can assure you they were. Unfortunately, recently while at school, (fortunately) my daughter has had to use what she learned from AMA which was in self defense. You learn karate and self defense hoping you never have to use it but if you do, you will be able to protect yourself. As a parent we want to always be there to protect our children, but we won’t always be able to be there, and knowing AMA teaches kids how to protect themselves is priceless. We highly recommend AMA and are sad to see the location on Winchester Rd. closed. This was a great and important part of our community.

It has been about a month since I began attending MMA classes with Alexander’s and I couldn’t be happier with my experience. I am new to the area and to MMA, and all the instructors made me feel very welcome and show every day that they are eager to help me accomplish my goals. They are patient with beginners and explain and demonstrate what needs to be done very clearly and are always encouraging.

I signed up immediately after my first two free classes. Students pay monthly and can attend as many classes as they want (as long as it is within their level)—it is what you make it. They are also always willing to give a few personal tips to those who have questions after classes, and there is an entire online portal of different moves so students can practice at home. Additionally, they send encouraging emails and postcards in the mail, and I really appreciate them taking the time to do that for their students to recognize their efforts.

I love Alexander’s and I’m so glad I found it. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a new hobby for personal development.

Great Karate School with the Best Instructors. I earned my junior black belt here but unfortunately I had to stop due to increasing school work. They have definitely made me more self-confident and aware of my surroundings through the years. I’ve been to summer camp here for a couple years and it was pretty fun. Overall, it’s not a bad experience and you’ll learn a lot and build your physical and mental endurance.

If you had asked me while I was going here, I would have rated the place higher. But it was the only studio I ever knew, so to me, many of the things I simply accepted as a student should have been unacceptable.

First of all, the lack of individual attention students receive is atrocious. Thinking back, the best days were the ones when classes were small. But as the studio got bigger, those instances were fewer and farther between. You can't get individual attention on what YOU do right and wrong, so you can get all the way to black belt doing a technique incorrectly and never know it.

Second of all, the facilities are disgusting. I would walk out of there with black feet every single time. Going to a different, cleaner facility now that I have tried another martial art made me realize that the dirtiness of their facilities should be considered unacceptable.

Third, everything is done in contracts behind closed doors. You don't have any idea what you are getting into. A month to month plan is far superior and it's what most other dojos do. You might get a discount if you pay for a longer-term plan, but you should be able to cancel at any time.

Fourth, favorites and politics are off the wall here. Everyone knows who the favorites are- and you know if you are not one of them. I was told one day that my moves weren't beautiful but I try hard. Geez, thanks. Guess I know why I didn't make demo team but the girl who said she tried 60% in class did. The favorites are praised and mentored and everyone else is treated like sheep to herd. And if you ever get into a problem with the family of a favorite, expect the studio to turn against you.

Fifth, the lack of history and general martial arts teaching here is extremely disappointing. I knew nothing about what Shotokan was when I went there, even how to spell it. Where it came from or anything else. The only history they ever taught was the school's history, and that should be unacceptable when learning martial arts. You can't know where you're going if you don't know where you came from.

All of this said, I have amazing memories of going there. Many of the instructors were helpful, awesome people. The leadership program was incredibly fun. All of the values lessons made me the person I am today. And there were lots of extra things to make it from a karate studio into a community. The parties and summer camps and everything else really made it into a community center that shaped my entire childhood. The number one thing I learned there was perseverance, and it's a value I bring with me in everything I do today. I can't thank this studio enough for everything they did to shape my life and make me a confident person. Being a black belt is truly one of my proudest accomplishments and I have this dojo to thank for it.

But the reality is that there are many martial arts studios out there and not all of them have the same downsides as this one.

As a disclaimer, it's been many years since I went there; things could be different now. But I'm very happy learning a different martial somewhere else without all these downsides.

Our kids have been training with Alexander's for almost 6 years. Between the leadership/staff, martial arts training and integration of character building the environment is one of respect and growth, and they have fun doing it. I love that they reward the students for doing the and-then-some in karate class; acknowledge good school grades and attendance; and encourage them to read and develop discipline at home. They also teach the importance of being on time, giving their best every time and sticking up for themselves and others. It has become a family of people we admire and want to surround ourselves and kids. It is worth much more than the money we pay for this program.

DO NOT do business with this organization. They will use predatory sales and contract practices to squeeze money out of you. They kept pestering my wife about a contract until she signed one. Then they tell us that adding more kids is "free", but it turns out it isn't because you have to sign another contract which extends how long they have you on the hook. It is completely unreasonable to have year-plus contracts with no cancellation terms aside from moving far away, dying, or permanent disability. Lose your job? They don't care!

It is also a cop-out to say "it's not us, it's the billing company." You continue to use the billing company and push people to sign unreasonable contracts. It's you.

DO NOT Go here. I did a 2 class trial from Panoply for my son and he enjoyed it, but after the second class they wanted me to sign up. They did it rushed and cornered me when I was distracted. I never finished my sign up or gave them any payment information, said I needed to think about it before paying 120$ a month. So I called and told them I wanted to wait, but they said it was too late I was locked in for 6 months at 800$. Definitely a SCAM, and it's all about money for them. I'd advise against going here. They haven't received a dime from me, nor will they.

Honestly I didn't even want to give this one star. Do not what ever you do sign a contract with this company. They will not let you cancel the contract with them. I tried to cancel my contract because we are moving and they told me that they don't handle the billing and the company that they use for payments is ASF. ASF told me that I had to provide a letter proving that I am moving more than 25 miles away before they would cancel my contract. This is robbery at its finest. I will not recommend this company to anyone.

The training provided by Alexander's martial Arts has been exemplary. Our entire family has been training here for over 8 years and have no plans to quit. The focus, discipline, self-assurance and other important mental aspects are consistently exemplified by both instructors and students. Self-defense, physical fitness, and martial arts skills in weapons and open-hand forms are taught with a critical eye while still keeping classes fun and energized. If you are looking for a great martial arts family who truly cares about their students, faculty and the community as a whole, this is a great place to go.

DO NOT ... I repeat DO NOT sign a contract with Jay Alexander ... you cannot get out of it for ANY reason! And IF they say oh I realized your son missed due to being gone for a month to visit their other parent or oh I had major surgery and cannot drive “we will tack it onto the END of your contract” it is a false! Jay Alexander owes us at least 4 months that they said could be tacked onto the “end” of the contract. do not attempt to discuss this with Jay. His claim will be “he has nothing to do with payment and you must talk with their financial company” I find it hard to believe that the owner of the company cannot make any adjustments with contacts AT ALL based on individual circumstances. A contract with karate is not THAT deep like a car payment or mortgage. Life happens and medical issues arise BUT this mob of a company knows this and banks on you not fulfilling your contract and regardless of ANY circumstance or issue there is NO WAY out! And before you think oh well we should teach our son to fulfill commitments we do and have and will continue to teach that. My question is where is the integrity of the company to stand by their verbal agreement behind closed doors that they do publically preach our children as they stand at attention. It is lip service ... lesson learned GET EVERYTHING “IN” WRITING... IN WRITING and DO NOT sign a contract with them at all! The convenience of a supposedly lower payment in the moment is worth it in the end. Extremely disappointed in this organization!

Amazing martial arts school, ama is so great with the community and there to help you and teach the class and have fun while also getting some exercise in, Great instructors, classes and community! I will say that one of the downsides is they’re overpriced a bit, however they are very great and dedicated focused and help in any way possible and have been a tremendous help to me in not only martial arts karate, mma, kickboxing or and such, but they they have also been a great look on life and teach you dedication focus and integrity and teach you to be the best you can be no matter what! I have been in for a year and a half jus ab now and I have no doubt in my mind that I’m going to keep going up in my belts and progressing in karate, Alexander’s martial arts is great, if you want to learn karate this is a great place to go, just make sure it’s really what you want and that you want to do it and can put in the time for it. Great martial arts school would highly recommend!

Be aware you are not signing a contract to pay with Alexander’s but with a third party biller. If you have a hardship or anything of the sort you will just get run around, even if you kid doesn’t like this. Then you have to buy $100+ or sparring gear which you can only buy from them. Classes are large and it seems like they use other students to teach classes. Then the classes are really short. You show up then they are over. Yes you can go to as many as you want but for such short lessons what is the point? I juggle between a two or three. I give them the benefit of doubt and gave three.

Wayy over priced and being of Japanese descent and raised in Japan it is embarrassing that they do not count correctly. The sensei's look a bit amateur as well. I am a 2nd degree black belt, so I let my daughters go for the trial bc I went there as a child when I moved to the US. Anyways pretty much they don't let you know the prices upfront. Why? Because they're over priced!!! Needless to say, I've found a good karate in town with awesome prices and knowledge.

Horrible business practices. They only want to rope you into signing their contracts as quickly as possible. Classes are large and they want parent participation of else you feel bad while wrangling that many kids. They don't learn quality karate by my goodness it'll cost you! So expensive and heaven forbid you come across tough times, they will not work with you at all. We are trapped in our contract and there is no way to get out. Enjoy pocketing your free money while we struggle. Unethical and contradictory to what they preach. I'm so disillusioned by these recreational business that require contracts. Heaven forbid your child might not like it...too bad you are paying.

Alexander's Martial Arts is littering Madison County with their signs attempting to advertise on utility poles. This is illegal in the city limits and against covenants and restrictions in most neighborhoods with HOA's. I know for a fact that the city has removed and disposed of a lot of their signs. Illegal advertising that others have to clean up - very unprofessional.

My youngest son and I both have black belts from AMA. Fantastic instructors, convenient class times, extra instruction available. This is no "belt mill" where you attend a few classes, pay you test fee and advance. The instruction is comprehensive and the belt tests are no joke....you have to work for every advancement. Lot's of practical exercises, and as one gets higher in the belt structure, appropriate doses of theory, customs, history to add to one's appreciation of the art.

The very best kid's programs I have ever seen (experience with 4 other martial arts schools over the years). Kids have fun, learn their material and are inbued with positive reinforcement and self-discipline. Plenty of other kids' activities like martial arts-themed parties, Friday "Parents Nights Out" where Mom and Dad can take thier marital artist for a few hours of fun, while they go out to eat or to a movie.

A positive, rewarding environment that is family-friendly and build those traits of character that help the student be successful in whatever endeavor they undertake.
