Great for kids (improves self confidence, discipline, fitness) and parents. My son and I are taking the class as it gives me a sport to bond with him over since he isn’t the most athletic or team sport oriented. The instructors are great working with children and adults of all skill and fitness levels. We are both learning martial arts and improving in our fitness and confidence. Outside of karate BMA offers a space where kids can get together for activities and games while bonding over a shared interest of karate. Recommend BMA to any parent or child considering learning karate or looking for an extracurricular activity outside of team sports.

My son has been training here for 3 years. We live in Chelsea, and it was a 30-minute drive away. We don't mind driving that far because they have the BEST instructors! Master Chandler, Mr. Chandler, Mr. Kurilla and all the staff are very patient and professional, and they treat you like family. I cannot speak highly enough about how much my son has learned here, from self-defense to karate skills, strength, and confidence, we enjoy our time here very much. I would encourage anyone interested to check it out in person. They are great for all ages and levels. We are so glad we enrolled our child here.

We had the absolute pleasure of working with Birmingham Martial Arts for our team’s theme reveal, and we couldn’t be more impressed! Mr. Kurilla and Mr. Carter came out and taught our athletes authentic karate moves that perfectly tied into our theme. They were incredibly talented, patient, organized, and knowledgeable—keeping our athletes engaged and excited the entire time.
A huge thank you also to Ms. Allison, who coordinated everything with us. She was so friendly, responsive, and easy to work with, which made planning a breeze.
Our athletes had a blast and walked away with not only new skills, but unforgettable memories. We highly recommend Birmingham Martial Arts for any event or program looking to combine fun, structure, and expertise!

Our family has been very happy with the BMA program. They are very student centered, positive and encouraging, and so good with kids and adults of all ages. The class sessions are varied so you get to practice different skills without getting bored. They also have several programs for more advanced students to branch off into different types of martial arts. We highly recommend this studio!

Our son is 4 years old and has completed his first 2 months of karate. We have modest goals at this age, including learning focus and discipline, developing an enjoyment of physical activity, meeting new friends, and laying a foundation for what we hope if a lifelong love of learning self-defense. We've been very pleased with the BMA program, and our son loves going to class.
I highly recommend BMA for the following reasons:
1) The instructors! Imagine for a moment trying to get and maintain the focus of a group of 4-5 year olds for 45 minutes at a time. It's a tough ask, and BMA does it quite well. Each weekly class has a clear structure and objectives that I can observe as a parent. This is not just disorganized play time for youngsters.
The instructors do a great job of engaging with the kids and reinforcing key concepts such as listening, focusing, persevering and maintaining positive attitude when things are difficult, as most things are when learning for the first time.
2) Flexible class offerings: for our age group we have 3 class options each week. If we can't attend our normal Monday night, we can make it up Thursday night or Saturday morning. This is helpful for busy families when conflicts arise.
3) Engagement: BMA instructors regularly check in with parents to seek feedback about classes and how our son is doing. They send our son postcards in the mail with handwritten notes of encouragement and congratulations when he has a good day at class or reaches a particular milestone. How many 4-year olds get mail?! It's a really nice touch the we appreciate.
4) Program Variety: in addition to the regular class offerings, BMA periodically offers Parents Night Out on Fridays, Birthday Parties, opportunities to participate in age-specific tournaments, and individual instruction.
I'm a big fan of BMA and the opportunities it offers for kids and the way in which they structure their programs. It's very well-run and I'm excited for our son to progress in the coming months.

I train here multiple times a week; I have seen incredible improvement in everything from my self-confidence in all areas to strength and fitness.
The instructors are very good, always do a good job of pointing out what could be better but not in a way that tears you down. The environment is very friendly and this is 100% something I will continue for the forseeable future.
They have classes for all ages and can work with things like if you have a bad back and are unable to jump, so even if you think you wouldn't be able to do it, give it a try!
They offer a free trial or introductory class, where you get to see what class is like. The pricing is reasonable, and though a little bit higher than I was expecting, you really do get everything you pay for. These people invest their lives in these students.

I was one of the instructors for this school and let me tell you, after I moved to Texas I really saw how different they were from other martial arts schools. This place will treat you like family and they value your presence at their schools, not your money. They always check up with you to make sure you or your kid is getting what they want or need from martial arts instead of only teaching you class after class. This place has the most friendly and inviting instructors I’ve ever met and if I ever move back to Alabama near one of their locations you bet I’m signing right back up with them.

My now 15-year-old daughter had been with BMA since she was 7. They have taught her how to focus, how to be strong in mind and determined. She is a go-getter and because of her time with BMA, she has confidence. She doesn't fear speaking to crowds. My son is 10 and he joined at 8-years-old.
Their training is top-notch, the instructors are amazing and BMA loves their students. We're one big, happy family there and I wouldn't go anywhere else!

My 7 y.o. grandson found his place with BMA. Every instructor is professional, encouraging, and make learning interesting. His attention span and confidence have increased dramatically. I carefully researched martial arts in the Birmingham and Tuscaloosa areas before visiting BMA, meeting with Master Potter, and choosing to enroll him in BMA. Absolutely no regrets!
