I wanted to be able to give this location a good review; however, I see they are not responsive to customer needs. What i requested was not a big request. I asked simply that the weekend patreons receive the same benefits as clients who attend during the week. On the weekends, the fans and many times the sauna/steam room are not turned on, the workers don’t know how to turn them on and despite asking the director, Nicole, several times and receiving the assurance this would be corrected. No luck. The gym is hot and humid without the fans and makes the workout experience unbearably hot. I suppose people have to pass out or have a heat stroke before the problem will be corrected. Not sure why this is so difficult to remedy.

Place excellent. Clean and good staff. One comment for management. There is one parking space for handicap and most of the time is used by YMCA Employee... This space for us.... Today I sow your desk employee at 10 am parking her car in the space.. this is a shame

Went here during lunch while I was serving on a grand jury in the district court. They have what you need to lift and do cardio. Solid place with a really nice staff.

My past encounter with the YMCA downtown was the best. You can work out and they have a sitting area for the kids.

Horribly rude front desk person tried to deny my 5 year old special needs son use of the restroom tonight at 6pm during the Big Spring Jingle event. He rolled his eyes at my husband and son and tried denying my son access to the restroom. What kind of indecent cruel hearted person does this to children??

So, I am a little confused. Picture shows the two towels that I was given today when I asked for a shower towel. Sunglasses for scale: you should be able to see that these are the tea-towel size, meant primarily for wiping off machines.
This was what I was given to take to the showers.
I was told by the person working the front counter that since COVID they are really cutting down on the towels that they are making available for patrons.
But there are still showers, and there are still people using the showers, and there are still people using the showers that are still open using full-size towels that were given to them by the people at the front counter.
I asked the guys in the locker room, after a little shamefully showing what they gave me, and they said that no one, I repeat NO ONE, told them that there was a "towel shortage" or that there was a phasing out of towels being offered. They seemed genuinely perplexed.
The only difference was that they were older than me. Maybe richer? I just won a drawing from the City of Huntsville to a scholarship to the downtown YMCA and this is my first week here. I feel little off-put by the towel fiasco, not so much for the possibility of having to bring my own towel, but by what feels like l have been lied to by the staff. In fact, in kind of felt like the kind of prank I suffered in middle school at the hands of people stronger and more popular than myself.
Imagine being the only one in the locker room with these little hand towels, having to dry off in front of a bunch of regular-gym-going-people that have full sized towels. I was embarrassed, hurt, and to be honest a little vulnerable in a place where I am trying to feel better about my body shape. Hard to do when you look like a hapless idiot.
Two of the guys were mad, though, and said that they were going to talk to management: I tried calling on my lunch today to speak to someone but the telephone directory for the YMCA cuts off halfway through the listings EVERY time. I hope that the two older fellas know someone, though, and can talk to someone. I don't think that the downtown Y will respond to this, but maybe they will.
Maybe your mileage will vary....but bring your own towel if you plan on showering before work.
*Per the response: there are other Members with full size towels in the locker room that had been given to them by your staff: my beef is the inconsistent application of your policy.

I come in the morning around 6:30, there is always an elliptical open for me to use. It seems like the perfect time to come. The front desk guy is always very cheerful and the building is clean. I have no complaints.

I love going to this YMCA. Not a lot of space but they make it work. It’s never really packed during peak hours. After your workout is very convenient to take a walk or run around the park.

This is gym is the best I've been to. There are sweet-spots of time where there are very few people. This gym is very intimate with a great aesthetic and a view out into Big Spring Park. The locker rooms and showers are almost always clean. There is quite a bit packed into this somewhat small gym. You can find most machines you want to use and there are plenty of treadmills and ellipticals.

I would recommend this gym. Great setting, great staff, great location.

I love coming here! The staff always greets my one year old and I with such kindness. The people in the childcare center are sweet to my little one and myself. He always leaves happy. Oh and the place is so clean! From childcare room to equipment to the locker rooms and the water fountain. I love a clean gym! The weights and equipment are well organized, up to speed with today’s technology and fun to use. There are umbrella and coat racks right up front. I can take my gym bag with me to machines. People are friendly, no judgey feeling. The reasons I’m giving 4 stars is because of the hours and parking. It closes at 9 and I typically come in the morning but I get off of work at 9 so it would be nice to go later in the evening when I want to. I have to park up the hill or across the street so it’s just a bit of a walk but it feels like a mile away when I’m lugging my gym bag, my baby’s bag and also the 20+ pound baby! Besides that, everything is just what I need.

Such wonderful staff. The facility is top notch - all new equipment. For the Express YMCA in town, they still offer quite a few classes throughout the day. If you have a suggestion, write on a comment card, they'll listen :) many unique, fun challenges throughout the year to keep you excited about coming to the gym. Great environment!
