The staff here is always friendly, and I appreciate their attitude — but the air conditioner is out more often than not, which makes working out really uncomfortable. Thankfully Fall is here!

Another issue is the TVs are always set to Fox News. I’ve asked several times if they could put at least one TV on CNN or MSNBC to have some balance, but nothing ever changes. Honestly, I’d rather not see any news channels while I’m exercising, but if they’re going to play news, it should reflect more than one point of view.

This could be a great gym if they’d fix the A/C and make the environment a little more balanced for everyone.

First it was the water fountain that was broken for over a year. Then it is the AC that has been broken for over a month.

The gym is great and always clean, but the employees is what makes this place great. Specifically Mike, who anlways greets everyone with a smile, always handle anything you need! Mike is by far the best employee there and definitely needs to be promoted! He will continue to make this place even better!

Everyone who works there is extremely friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, ownership has the worst communication skills of any business I've ever seen. They're closed at least once a week with AC issues and the only way to find out is a piece of paper taped to the front door. No email, text, nothing letting you know before you take time out of your day to drive up there.

The fact that they still charge you, despite not being open half the time you try to go is ridiculous. It's a shame, the employees there are great but the gym is horribly ran. I will be canceling my membership as soon as possible

Edited: I ended up cancelling my membership after a full week of HVAC related closures. To anyone else thinking of or planning to do so, please be aware of when your monthly renewal is because I cancelled one day and the membership drafted the next day. I understand *why* so while I'm frustrated by it, it was something I hadn't considered. Please be aware in case you're trying to cancel.

I'm officially mad enough to leave a review because I know I'll be charged for the full month regardless of the afternoon closures due to heat. The location was closed for 2-3 days last summer to "fix" the AC. To no surprise, the problem didn't actually get better, and I'm speaking as someone who never even complained about the gym's temperature because I simply don't care as long as I get to work out.

But on 7.15, I got told to leave halfway through my workout because "corporate policy is to close if the gym temperature goes above 80 degrees." We are not even to the hottest part of summer yet - in ALABAMA. They proceeded to close yesterday around 3-4, and they just close today again (7.17). I am missing a workout due to the location's failure to fix something that has clearly been an issue far longer than it should be, and I'm expecting it to continue. What is my money going to if no equipment is being updated and the AC continues to work so poorly the location gets daily afternoon closures?

Nothing apparently.

I’m considering checking out other gyms in the area with hopes of finding a different one that I can go to on a more regular basis. This is downright ridiculous, and the fact no refunds or percentage off will be given even more so. Worse yet because this is my favorite PF location in the surrounding areas and the most convenient to my home. I'm highly disappointed in this continued issue and its impact on my ability to complete activities that directly benefit my health.

This location has begun closing early to due high heat inside the gym. Instead of fixing the HVAC, ownership continues to close the club early with no communication to its members.

The air conditioning at this location has not worked properly for the past three summers. This year, instead of fixing it, they’ve started closing early and blaming it on the heat — with no notice given to members. You either have to call ahead and hope someone answers, or drive all the way there just to find a note taped to the door saying they’re closed due to the heat.

They’ve been closing regularly in the afternoons this summer without warning, and today they closed as early as noon. Again, no advance warning like an email or updating the hours online or on the app— just a sign on the door. This is unacceptable.

The staff is great — friendly, helpful, and clearly doing everything they can. This is not on them.

The real issue is ownership. The owner’s response to complaints is always to “let management know.” That’s a weak excuse. Of course management knows — they’re dealing with this daily. It’s on the owner to fix the A/C and invest in a safe, functional gym environment.

This situation is completely unacceptable, especially when members are paying for a service we often can’t use. We as patrons deserve better.

The A/C situation is getting ridiculous one excuse after another! This has been going on for a year. Either fix it or replace it. It isn’t rocket science. This a place of business do you care about your customers? Here’s a thought if you’re going to close early be consistent and tell everyone until further notice your hours will be 4:00am till 5:30 or whatever. The good first- the staff are all very nice and it’s usually a clean PF. This would be a 5 star review if that was all anyone cared about. But there are 2 major issues that aren’t getting fixed. And I’ve brought it to their attention but I think it’s the owners/management that doesn’t care.

First off, NONE of the equipment is setup to connect to Apple fitness even though it has the ability to. It’s lazy not to set the equipment up for max benefits. I have mentioned it but nobody seems to care to fix that connection. The treadmills seem old compared to all the other PF’s I’ve gone to. And at other PF’s, all of their LifeFitness or Matrix equipment connects to Apple without hesitation.

2nd- the AC has been out since I began here in the spring. Today I’m in here again and it’s unbearable. When I’ve asked about it, I am told that management refuses to get new AC’s. And apparently this has been going on now for 3 summers. It only gets patched and then fails again days later. It’s ridiculous for a paid gym. I can go exercise outside for free if I wanted to stay in this heat. Before summer, I would come in the evenings and the place would be half full of people. This week in June, there is only about 10 people in here total. That’s insanely low for a PF of this size. I think I’m going to find another PF for now because I am not paying to work out in this heat. But I only chose PF gyms because this one is close to my work. Ugh! Maybe I’ll leave PF all together. There’s a much nicer gym about a mile away.

7/16/2025 - Update. Received an email back on June 24th saying that the gym would be temporarily closed in the evenings due to excessive heat and lack of AC. And in small letters it states that more closures would possibly happen as heat temps rise. As of today, the gym has been closed in the afternoons (when I workout). Surely the corporate PF has legal stipulations in the contract with their owners to fix AC issues in order to stay a PF gym.

7/17/2025 - My reply to PF's response from a year ago (as I assume they would say the same thing today).
How am I supposed to contact the support team? My son called 4 times today around 1-12 pm to talk to someone and nobody would answer the phone at the Vestavia location. And he beat me there to work out this afternoon, only to find that it is closed yet again today. I am assuming they aren't even opening at all now if nobody answers the phone. How crappy is that though? You close your gym every single day and then don't consistently send an email for each day's closing to let us know? We have to show up to find out if it's open or closed. But even if you are closed because of excessive heat, they should have someone managing the phone calls to the location.

I have only been a member since January. I had heard of the lack of air conditioning off and on (a lot "off") last summer. The elliptical cardio machine has arms that move and don't rotate properly potentially hurting your knee and hip.

This Planet Fitness in Vestavia Hills is a step above the others I’ve visited in Hoover and Homewood. The facility is relatively new, very clean, and has upgraded machines. The staff is friendly, and I really enjoyed my cardio workout and the HydroMassage. Parking was easy with the attached garage, which was a big plus during the storm. Locker rooms were also clean and convenient with built-in combination locks. Overall, a great experience!

I only stopped in to use the tanning bed, but found very friendly staff and really nice, new and improved tanning beds from any I’ve seen or used in PF locations before.

The location isn’t quite as convenient as it’s in a shopping center, but really nice staff and equipment.

12/16/24 UPDATE! I thought this place was bad, but blamed the COVID crisis for most of that. I found out yesterday that this gym is UNFRIENDLY by nature. They are consistent though ... rude 100 percent of the time. STAR RATING DROPPED TO 1-STAR.

This is a very unwelcoming place for people like me, especially with the Jefferson County Health Dept mask order. If you enjoy working out with a mask or don't mind being intimidated at the door for not wearing one, this is the place for you. However, all is not lost. Mona, the manager happily transferred my membership to the Inverness club in Shelby County (no mask required) and waived the 90-day requirement. Because of this accommodation, I remain a Planet Fitness customer.

The location and the staff are nice but I’m finding it very difficult to go here because the air conditioner is broken. From one of the reviews it seems like it’s been broken for months and nothings been done. The last time I went, I asked the front desk about it and they didn’t know when it will be fixed. I love this gym very friendly staff but.. this gym does not have heavy enough weights the dumbbells only go to 75 pounds! They should go to at-least 100 pounds!
