The amount of kids programming at the gym is overwhelming and takes away from other members ability to climb.

Yeah, I stopped in Alaska rock gym from out of town.Looking for something for someone who is a very avid climber. I did end up finding a shirt for that person, but the person helping me was not the nicest young man and he couldn't get rid of me fast enough from the counter. He needs to learn a little customer service and he needs to show a little bit of manners. This is from someone who taught climbing for years. The climbing gym itself looked really awesome though.

Do not under any circumstances, get a monthly membership. When I broke both hands on the second day of the month, I was informed they have a policy for the specific purpose of not refunding/rebating injured people when they are unable to use their memberships. This was despite my willingness to pay for the individual times I had been able to go. I donโt know how anyone in good conscience can support accompany that enacts such greedy policies.
In the event you want to use the fitness annex, you can expect to find the limited cardio machines frequently broken, and left in a state of disrepair for several weeks at a time.

Son is in a full length cast leg splint, under Dr.s orders, no weight on foot. Went into the gym asking for them to just let the lessons he would miss do to injury roll into the next class he takes. Have been taking classes for 2 years... NOPE they won't agree. Under the new management contract, clearly says no refunds, no credit. I asked for neither just the lessons missed for future lessons when he is cleared medically and has his full leg splint off. Still, no, sorry. But I can bring him in, and he can climb with his cast on... So tomorrow he goes in for his rock climbing lesson.
Im thinking no services rendered. You just created a huge issue. I paid for the service.
Its abosolutely a risk to have anyone clumb with a cast. But hey, people missing limbs climb so, off we go. Very very very not impressed by their lack of customer relations. And of course I signed paper work saying I assume all risks.... so dont even deny us the lessons. Absolutely no money is out of their pocket.... I'll post pictures of his lessons after class.
Update: The general manager reached out to me, which I appreciate. Its mutual he isnt rock climbing until released from Dr.s care.
He loves the Rock gym. He has had knowledgeable coaches.
My rating of 1 is for the business end of management of the Rock gym. It remains a 1. I see the hard fastness of it.
They do not see beyond paper and ink...
thats ok. I did sign a contract, fair is fair. To box someone into a situation where they cant legally climb, and finish out the contract, then deny them serives paid for well into advance, is my grievance. But kudos to the manager, that keeps the line in the sand straight. I can respect that, even while not liking it.
Thanks for reaching out to me

Very impressed with the facilities. As someone that mainly sends V1s and some V2s, there were more than enough climbs for me. Spacious and clean space. I was visiting from out of town and came twice during my trip to Anchorage.

I love this place! The only thing I can complain about it that all of the sinks in the bathroom only have HOT HOT water that comes out. I'd like cool water after a long hard climb. The routes are awesome, and I like how they're evenly dispersed.

ARG is a wonderful gym. They keep the place clean, which is not very common amongst rock gyms. They have trad lead and bouldering among other attractions such as their gym that add to the variety of activaties. They reset walls on a good cycle to mix things up aswell. If you go daily, you will run out of routes, but that is normal, and it's never very long before something new goes up. Great business, and I highly recommend!

I like this climbing gym. If for nothing else I like that they still have auto belays and are hence giving the finger to all the lawyers and insurance companies by doing so.
However, they have some of the dirtiest most chalked up and rubbered-up climbing holds Iโve ever seen in a gym. Their brushes to clean their holds are likewise not climbing specific brushes, are very not stiff, and donโt help to remove the excess build up. I glassed off more holds here and banged up my shins more than other gyms. For the prices they charge here, they need to do better.
Iโve seen way more popular rock gyms in Seattle and Denver do a better job of cleaning climbing holds. 6 weeks is a long turnaround time for boulder routes.

I took my son to go to the rock gym for the first time. I filled the forms out and waited for the front desk to be done with a phone call. I work customer service and totally understand finishing up a phone call before helping next customer. This phone call lasted about 20 minutes. By the time it was done we got all checked in. The front desk let me know since it was my sons first time he needed to do an orientation. No problem. They give us gear and go back to work. I was having trouble with his harness and asked for help with putting it on. No one came to help us. My son was getting frustrated( he is 2), I was embarrassed. I ended up leaving after being in the front desk area for over an hour. I called back and received a refund. That was very kind of them.
My main issue was not feeling very welcomed to an establishment that was new for us. I will not be going back.

My in-laws live in Anchorage so we visit a couple of times a year. Last year around December we found this gym and were blown away by the quality. It is huge and beautiful and so much fun!
Isabelle belay certified a few of us and she was super cute and helpful. Love her ๐งโโ๏ธ
We came back again this summer and recognized Isabelle immediately. But the coolest thing was that she remembered us!! She helped us with a few rock climbing questions and then chatted and made us feel so welcome (While also sharing her favorite running trails with me!)
We bought a cool t-shirt and stop by several times during our time in alaska. Its the perfect way to start our day!!
We will be sure to stop by every time we are in town. ๐ฅฐ

Really really cool place to visit. It's been a long while since I've done any climbing but it felt good to get in there with some friends and have fun. What a fun place! My kid loves climbing and planned a family outing here. We had a ball.

I felt completely safe climbing here.
Alex did my Belay check out, which I failed! Haha, he let me down easy, but it's been years since I have climbed, and I'm glad they have high standards!

This gym is an actual Day Care. With the amount of business AK Rock gym sees from kid classes alone, membership prices should be far more affordable. The class sizes usually exceed what the gym staff can actually monitor. It is a very regular occurrence to see a kid start climbing right underneath someone, or to have one run up and punk you off a problem you are obviously about to start on, because they don't understand the etiquette.

I climb here simply because there isnโt another option in the area. There are several things wrong with this gym.
I find it pretty ridiculous that they charge $55 extra per month so you can have access to the fitness and yoga classes. I would understand this if they had dozens of classes per week to choose from but options are extremely limited.
My first experience in the gym I asked to get added onto my husbandโs account so we could be together on a family pass. It took almost an hour and 4 different personnel to figure out how to do it. They had me fill out their paperwork multiple times even when I explained to them that I had already filled it out.
After all was said and done, they had to give me a tour in which I had to wait forโฆ even though there were 4 people behind the desk shopping online and socializing with one another. When I got to climb I had been there for over an hour.
I think they they would also benefit from having stickers for your phone that have your barcode on it. I donโt always drive the same car, or my husband and I commute together and juggling different sets of keys for our checkin tags is really annoying.
Another example of dysfunction is trying to get belay and lead certified. When we approached the desk on another occasion, despite there being multiple personnel behind the counter, we were told that no one was trained to do a belay test with us for top rope or lead. We found this extremely frustrating and couldnโt understand why their whole staff isnโt held to a certain standard.

The infrastructure is amazing. Management lacking some attention to detail to make significant improvements. The gym areas needs additional weight racks, for example. Great gym but the mask requirement has gone on for far too long. Thereโs no logic. Youโre called out for not wearing your mask but thereโs no requirement to wash hands when waking in, 100s of people use the same rocks (unwashed), unclip the same carabiners, touch the same ropes, and yet they are worried about you wearing a mask. Thereโs no need for the masks.

This place is AWESOME! Took my 6 year old here to learn to climb. The instruction was good, the price is good, and the climbing is good. Definitely great for all ages. I've seen every age group represented there. From what appeared to be three year-olds to very very fit seniors.
They do have a gym where you can work out, but it's a little bit small and it looks like it's more of an accessory to actually climbing. From what I've seen most people in there are working on grip strength and climbing related skills. No lockable lockers for people to use but there's adequate storage for jackets and boots. I've been in there when it was incredibly busy and I didn't have a problem finding a cubby for my stuff.

The Alaska Rock Gym has an incredible span of climbing space with a nice little free-weight gym and dance studio tacked on. The facility is kept clean and the staff are very helpful without being obtrusive. If you've ever visited a rock gym in other places in the U.S. you'll realize we've been spoiled with the size and cost of this gym. We mainly come for the youth programming, my kiddo has been climbing here for nearly 7 years, beginning at the old location and continuing at the current location. Weโve had the privilege of seeing how the youth programming has evolved over the years and just keeps getting better. It was amazing when my kiddo started 7 years ago and I am continually amazed when they make more improvements. The staff work really well with all types of kids, meeting the kids where they are at and helping them grow at a pace that fosters a love for climbing and a desire to learn. If your youth is interested, please give it a try!

If you are a kid, new, or inexperienced, awesome place to go. If you are an experienced climber looking for a place to train without being constantly overrun by kids who are barely controlled by staff, recommend going after 6pm

What a great community! Thanks for helping my 10 year old fall in love with this challenging and dynamic sport. Fabulous clean facility, knowledgeable and friendly staff and instructors. Especially appreciated Liam's guidance and sense of humor.

Been going here for years with either a monthly or punch pass and this establishment is over the top with customer service, safety, and passion for climbing. The staff are fantastic and make every effort to be friendly and informative with climbing, bouldering, or physical workouts. The climbing routes and team that works very hard to make route changes very often are top notch.
