I have enjoyed going to the Alaska club West for 3 years. Unfortunately, they made the decision to shut down the basketball court at the West club which is is a main reason myself and many others joined. They made the decision without any input from their members, and gave a 10 day notice.

My girlfriend joined because of the benefit of the woman’s only side, which provided a safe environment to workout in. They are closing that as well.

We will both be canceling our memberships if the closures follow through. The review will change if they don’t.

They gave us 2 weeks notice that they are forever closing the basketball court. Many people, myself included, have played basketball there for decades, this group of guys playing here is the only reason I have a membership.
There has never been anything Alaskan about the Alaska club, they have always maximized profits in a low competition environment in lieu of serving their members, Alaskans.
-They have membership rules that are intentionally inflexible and borderline predatory, and allow for no seasonality.
-The staff and leadership don’t seemed to be trained in customer service, rather corporate convenience.
-They survive from a competent and aggressive sales team
-Things are constantly broken.
-Cleanliness is questionable.
-Rates are high.
I’m glad my time with them is over.

With the sudden closing of the women side my girl friend has no safe comfortable place to work out this is unacceptable to take away women’s safe spaces and we will both be canceling our memberships!

Absolutely predatory practices. Reviewed the contract and this should be illegal. 18 months locked in and fine print that will cost hundreds to cancel should your circumstances change. When people complain (as most miss such fine print intentionally crafted so) they reply woth gaslighting saying "sorry you were unhappy with the terms you agreed to". When the fine print is numerous convoluted and ambiguous writing.

Which is why they only present the terms at time of sale, rather than posting terms on their site.

Anyone that can sell such a contract is a morally bankrupt individual.... please, I implore you take this thing home and read it. This little snake had the audacity to think i was stupid enough to sign it.

Seems like the workers stand around do nothing but make excuses of why things aren’t done. The locker room ran out of towels and the only excuse was “the clean team called out”. Okay? Hire reliable people that can do the job or pay them a reasonable wage. I don’t pay $100 plus bucks a month for excuses nor does any other member. The high ups don’t do anything about it I know that for sure.

Just cancelled because of my belongings being stolen and they’re charging over $500 for cancellation fee. Small price to pay for making the mistake of thinking this place was a good one. I highly recommend the YMCA. $6 per swim versus $177/mo for lackluster everything.

Alli, she is the BEST, not only teaching the class, but as a person, she take the time to get to know you and cares for you. I been coming to the gy for the past 20 years on and off and never no one has invited me or take the time to explain what a class was, she reach out to me when I was leaving and start talking and that God to that I been coming to the class for almost two months!! 💜

I went to Friday night Group Power with Vicky at West Gym. It was a good workout, thank you. But too hot with the heat going. After the third song, I peeked at the thermostat and it was 73 degrees with the heat running! Vicky said “don’t worry about the heat,,” but that was uncomfortable. Could you turn off the heat before class starts? Also it was hard to see Vicky because the lights above where she was standing were not on.

Austin, at the AK West Club is a great personal trainer. I worked with Austin for months up to the day before a major surgery. Over time, as the surgery date neared, and the pain/decreased mobility of the joint became more severe, Austin was flexible. We started focusing on what I could do, as opposed to what I couldn't do. I was impressed he was willing to modify and be creative in figuring out how to maximize conditioning while being cognizant of my disability. Austin is attentive, and alert to proper technique. He doesn't stand around on his cell phone, scrolling while you bust your butt. I look forward to starting up again with Austin as soon as I am able to. Oh, forgot, I'm recovering better than expected, thanks to Austin's work with me. Thanks Austin, T.

Motivation to work out can wane within 10min. This gym serves a large neighborhood. Many homes in walking distance. We say hello to each other and often comment about how much we like this centrally located, small gym. It has most of the same equipment as the South gym and a room for friends to gather and put in their own group work out routine. It has a tanning bed for light therapy in the dark of winter and walks off windows looking out at the trees and distant mountains.

Absolutely love The Alaska Club! From the moment I walked through the doors, I felt welcomed and at home. The staff is AMAZING—so friendly, knowledgeable, and always ready to help. Whether I have a quick question about equipment or need some advice on my workout routine, they’re always there with a smile and great guidance.

The facilities are top-notch—everything is super clean, well-maintained, and there’s a great variety of equipment for every fitness level. I’ve tried their group fitness classes, and wow, they’re fantastic! The instructors are motivating, and you can tell they truly care about your progress.

It’s not just a gym; it’s a community. I’ve made so many great connections here and look forward to my workouts every day. I genuinely love being part of The Alaska Club family, and I can’t recommend it enough to anyone looking for a place that feels like more than just a workout—it's a whole vibe! Keep up the amazing work, team! 5 stars all the way! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This is about a year into having this membership, so here's my honest review...
The gyms are great. They each have their own perks. The fact that this one is open 24/7 is very convenient for my personal and work life. Some things I have noticed over the time though, have been large amounts of people coming in during the night hours where there is no staff and utilizing the gym. Most of them respect the nature of gym, while very few like to horse around with the equipment. As for the wet/dry sauna rooms, I definitely understand why it would be closed during the dark hours with no staff on-site. But at the same time I believe that anyone who signs up for this membership is also responsible enough to utilize that area as well, I mean we pay for it. (again, I get it can be a safety or sanitation issue so its just a personal opinion). As for the price to utilize all 3 sites here in Anchorage, it does seem steep but at the same time you have to look at the amount of maintenance that comes into replacing equipment, laundry service, upkeeping of changing rooms, etc. Each gym I've been to has always been clean, and proper signs posted on broken equipment.

The gym itself is nice, but parking is kind of awful. I don't typically do a review based on a parking lot and I'm probably telling on myself by parking near one door that apparently says no parking, but there was no cone where I parked, I simply took a parking spot that someone else had before me since I couldn't find parking anywhere in that parking lot after driving around three times and a guy says 'next time pay attention to the sign and cone'. Yes, I missed the sign, but I surely didn't miss a cone. It was his tone and no cone that kind of pissed me off and that I am new to the gym. And maybe he should be mad at the person who actually moved the cone, not me...

11/12 Edit review. The general manager called and was so friendly in explaining and understanding. That is what you call good service and great management. Serious kudos and thank you for that!

I agree with every single person who has rated this place a 1 star so far. The pricing is extremely outrageous especially since the gym is based around year long contracts. The contracts are preditory to say the least and I feel cheated out of my money. I had to cancel the membership due to my living situation and had to pay $550 for the cancelation fee and the extra month they make you pay before you can cancel. Please make sure read the entire contract in its entirety before you decide to give this greedy place your money.

Are you aware that The Alaska Club is public access past staffed hours? That’s right! Why would you pay $120 a month to access the facility when you can have one of the many high school aged kids using the gym like a playground or homeless people leave the door open for you?

Seriously, go here a few hours past closing and the door will be propped open so the kids can let their friends in or you’ll see them running back and forth to let their buddies through the door. It’s a complete joke. They’re loud, disruptive, treat the gym like a playground, slam equipment and cause issues. You’ll see broken equipment, weights, towels and garbage thrown everywhere. I was there last month and there was a kid on top of the hammer strength machine with his shirt off yelling. A homeless guy was wandering around making a mess in the locker room a few weeks after that. This is a constant issue and with what they charge for a membership, a complete joke. Alaska club charges Equinox prices for an LA fitness facility and a planet fitness experience.

Brought this up to management and no resolution. I guess the “ we will fine you if you let in non members” sign up front is just a suggestion.

Skip the membership, save your money and just show up here a few hours past when the front staff leave, the kids or homeless will let you right in.

I'm only writing this review because they sent me an email. Among the bad experiences that I have had and I have not given up because of a pseudo instructor who yelled at me into the microphone in the middle of class, "pathetic" that was what Leah K yelled at me, when I started and I had a Significantly overweight, that at the time I made my complaint and they only responded "I'm not going to talk about that" I will never forget that horrible experience because apart from that that woman was very rude and racist to me, making ridiculous and absurd comments about me culture and my nationality. But they didn't want to talk about that, the bosses of that pseudo instructor, who couldn't stop me from wanting to continue with my weight loss. I just stopped attending her class and I started doing my routines based on YouTube and Instagram videos, I don't want to have that woman in my life around again, it was a horrible traumatic experience and I don't wish this horrible experience to anyone else. I can only say that the facilities are good, not the best because of a lack of cleaning staff in the women's bathrooms. Broken appliances or machines take a long time to be repaired. I don't have anything to say about the classes because I don't go to any of them, only with Dana, who she is fantastic. Not other classes, I wouldn't want to have the horrible experience I had before. I just go do my thing without talking to anyone and that's it. That's all I can say about the West club. The location of the place is very good

This gym is by far the most greedy institution of its kind. After a bad experience at their club I requested to cancel. They will not do so without assessing fees that amount to half a year of membership dues.
I asked the club to work with me take dues already paid as sufficient. They are threatening to send me to collections.

No other gym in town will hand you a 7 page contract. I should have known better. Buyer beware. In this time of economic struggles do you really need to give your business to a facility that will not work with you and costs 2k per year?? Consider other options. Never again.

The staff doesn’t explain the cancellation policy at all, so here it is. If you cancel there is a $150 fee, if you cancel within a year. And it doesn’t matter the reason. I cancelled because I was uncomfortable with the fact that cell phones are allowed to be used freely in the locker rooms and sauna. They have a rule that “you aren’t allowed to video or take pictures”. But of coarse anyone with a brain knows how easy it is to film without anyone noticing. And that people who would do such a thing are not going to be honest about it. There was no compassion whatsoever from the staff about my concern. The signs about cell phones aren’t clearly posted, or posted at all that I could find. And almost every person in the sauna had a phone out, either watching videos or making a call. Maybe I’m the crazy person who believes in privacy in a locker room. They also don’t prorate the month when you cancel, so I signed up on February 4th, and cancelled on March 3rd, and am forced to pay for the month. Plus the $150 cancelation fee. So it cost me $350 for three visits to the place , and when I realized how the rules were handled I cancelled. Nickel and diming is their specialty. I’ve never had service that bad anywhere.

I prefer the Alaska Club West over any of the other Alaska Club locations. I typically go around 6:45, 7am - it’s it’s just around the time the early risers begin to leave, and it gets a little less crowded. The staff is always friendly and does their best to greet you as you enter and exit the building. It’s more spacious in the free weights area, than any of the other locations, and it’s easy to make friends with other community members. It is a welcoming judge-free zone. I really appreciate that the club is always clean, locker rooms are kept well, and there’s not a single “messy” area of the gym. When bringing a guest, I bring them to this location specifically because of how spacious it is compared to the other clubs. Super satisfied with the service. Keep it up Alaska Club West!❤️

One area many of the members would like to see improvement is extending the hours of availability for the Sauna, Steam Room, and Basketball Court. We would love to have the hours open past 8pm again. The facilities themselves are great, but not the reason of my rating. Their contracts are predatory, not allowing you to cancel if you can still get to the gym within 40 miles (could have been a higher number, not 100% sure but it was at least 40) meaning they expect you to pay a minimum of 80 a month even if you cannot reasonably get to one of their locations daily.

Secondly, when I signed up there was a "promotion" going to the effect of "free" upgrade to their premium membership option, and if I remember correctly a free first month, or something to that effect. I had told the recruiter I would not be interested in continuing the premium membership after the trial period had ended and to discontinue my billing of it; they acknowledged this and I thought that was done. However, it was not. I checked my bank account to see I was billed ~$160 instead of the ~$90 and initially when I called to ask for it to be credited, they told me I had to handwrite a note within the trial period indicated my intent to cancel it. After I insisted heavily on a credit due to the recruiter being told this before I had even signed up, they referred to it as a "courtesy credit" when they finally listened to me. I found this rather disrespectful, but was glad I wasn't out the money, at least.

Thirdly, a small infraction, but a problem nonetheless. I was told the promotion I had mentioned earlier would be over at the end of the month and I had to sign up right away (it was at the end of the month) to receive the promotion. Not only did the promotion not end that month, I continue to see it almost every single month since then, feel free to look at one of their signs the next time you drive by.. This was a blatant lie the recruiter felt no guilt in telling, and this just left a sour taste in mouth combined with the other problems.

Lastly, what sparked me to write this review is during this COVID-19 situation, they initially did not offer options for billing, and essentially told everyone we have to pay full price for a service we have 0 access to, because apparently they thought they were exempt from being affected like everyone else from the shutdowns simply because they already possess our billing information and tried to pitch it like we're being involuntarily charitable (aka stealing money from us).. After what I can only assume was immediate backlash, they retracted that statement and offered 3 payment options.

-Billing no longer continues during the down time, and will resume once services return
-Get your membershiping+a small percentage more in a pre-paid Visa card
-Continue paying as normal and receive a credit to your account instead, effectively making AK Club a debtor to its members
(not seeing the email and therefore not selecting any option would still result in them *STEALING* your money, problematic and predatory for the elderly and those without phone/internet)

Then afterwards with no indication or email they removed the Visa option, which resulted in my option changing from the discontinue billing, to what I can assume is the credit option, or they just removed my input entirely, because I was billed $80 for the month of March. Of course, I can't get ahold of their customer service line, it will just ring to voicemail infinitely - classic. I reselected the discontinue billing option and I better not see a bill for the month of April... And I also better receive a credit for the month of March at the very least.

I had the misfortune of using a towel from the "clean" bin that happened to have poop on it. After informing the managerial staff, I was told that it was "determined 1. The towel is clean 2. The discoloration you interpreted as poop was nothing more than a stain which resulted from previous use of this towel." Dear world. I have white towels. They get stains. But if it looks like poop, and smells like poop, it's poop. Still waiting for a better response. Managerial staff at West 0/5 stars.

Never took the time to explain the payment schedule. No courtesy call or email when CC was denied after charging 2 months in December. Accounting takes a minimum of 2 days to respond to emails and never answers the phone. Conflicting information Everytime I go in to speak with someone. Refuse to honor the 90 comfort guarantee as printed in the contract. Then I asked to change my membership and was sent a blank contract to fill out myself. I'm just blown away by the audacity of management to let their employees behave this way. Charles and Thad should be running this place.

I have been going to this gym for a little over 1 year now. I would like to say they currently have such a friendly staff in all areas, childcare included. The gym is always clean and stocked with towels. Recently, there was an event that happened, details not needed. But let me say how professional Cherie, the operations manager was! I have rarely encountered such professionalism in handling a difficult issue. I continue to be happy with the services I receive at this facility and would recommend it to anyone who asks.

The equipment and facility are typically clean and in good working order. The membership dues are atypically high for a gym. The best part about going to the West location is their front desk host, Maribel. She always goes out of her way to greet you when entering, very attentive when asking a question or requesting club services, and wishes you a good day when leaving. She is genuinely kind and inviting!

Expensive, and very nickle and dimey. A good gym if you like 24 hour access and newish gym equipment. The women’s steam room and jacuzzi is nice when it’s working. I’ve been a member just 3 weeks and have seen the jacuzzi closed off a lot. Parking isn’t very good. Be prepared to park in front of Walgreens (which is probably not recommended) or several yards away closer to Kaladi Cafe.

Omgosh, staff very ... preoccupied.... no, annoyed, at my premembership questions, to the point of , finding a person that can answer it... they made stuff up or dismissed me completely ! The GM made eye contact with me , and from her office , diliberty avoided me. I had question specifically for the General Manager! As far as customer service, I don’t think anyone ever trained then! so sad the 25 people I was representing will now enjoy a different membership at a different club. Unfortunate the Alaska Club West ‘s employee’s phones were more important then Their potential clients! 11/26/18 8:02pm

Worst customer service ever, lazy sales staff that when you tell them to cancel your membership they tell you to go call accounting and so they can get back on their phones, and they even sigh when you tell them that you know they can do it and don't want to do it. The most unprofessional gym staff I have ever seen in my whole life, not even Planet Fitness is like this! I recommend you DON'T sign up for this gym and save the hassle of dealing with such unprofessional staff!

Alaska club body shames
It is a small guy; very disappointed for the price we pay.

Apparently the old stingy Russia ladies get upset when you wear shorts and a T-shirt into the sauna. Because it says swim suit or naked. Sorry that i don’t feel comfortable in my body, to sit in a sauna naked! They felt the need to go tell management and try to get me and a few other ladies i never meet kicked out because of this. If i can wear a shorts and a T-shirt into a pool, i don’t see why i couldn’t wear it in the sauna because i am ashamed of my body after 2 kids!

If i can’t wear a T-shirt and shorts, i really don’t see why people can be spread eagle in there, forcing me to see things i don’t want to see.

I didn’t use to hate it, but I’m beginning to. I talked to the manager today and I’m sure the AK Club account will say, “we’ve talked about this”, but the point of a review is to let everyone else know about being treated so poorly.

I’m a pastor and generally a nice person. I’m not just prone to blowups or complaining to get my way. I’m pretty reasonable in general, so take this for whatever it’s worth.

The Alaska Club WEST has been my gym for 11 years (or more...), but not for much longer. They continue to make changes that I’m sure are profitable for their business, but it’s the average customer who loses. They took all the cardio equipment and shoved it in a poorly ventilated, much smaller space and turned some fans on, hoping that might keep the air moving more, but if you are like me and you’ve been a member for 10+ years, you see the way they’ve catered to the opportunity to do group training (10 people EACH PAYING for what you used to get in a one-on-one session - ) and they’ve transformed what once felt like a gym for everyone into a gym for gym rats. If you’re a body builder, you’ll feel right at home, walking past all the mirrors and muscle clad people waiting to greet you the moment you walk in. It used to be that if you didn’t want that shame, you didn’t have to go into the body building area. If you have a normal to large body type like me, you’ll just feel inadequate to be there. They used to go out of their way to help out the customer, but now they have no interest in people. Just policies. For 11+ years, you knew you could time your workout so that you could watch playoffs (in most sports) and if it wasn’t on, they’d put it on for you. No longer. They do NOT change channels. Nevermind that it’s the mlb playoffs. (This was the incident that precipitated my review, but it’s just the straw that broke the camel’s back.) They’d rather you watch news on 5 channels and Harry and Ellen. And don’t come on Sunday nights. At least 50% of the time, they don’t have clean towels on Sunday nights. The management here changes about once every three months to a year and so the members actually know more about their policies than their management. Most changes just get made with no prior communication and then they just apologize for the fallout. I’m just tired of it. They do not care about their people the way they used to and there are plenty of less expensive gyms in town where you can be treated the same if not better.

If you're looking for a gym with lots of extras and new equipment then The Alaska Club West might be worth joining.

Not the cheapest gym and you'll need time to complete the sign-up. If you can survive the paperwork then you'll find the equipment is some of the best in the area.

The Alaska Club West membership allows entry into other The Alaska Club locations such as Downtown Anchorage and Palmer.

The Alaska Club West has plenty of parking compared to other gyms in the area. Open 24/7 with staff available. Trainers are easy to schedule along with tanning, massages, and workout classes.

If the weather is poor and it's 5PM then you'll find plenty of members here.

Stop reading and make some gains!

The Alaska Club is great if you have endless amount of money to spend on their services. However, when I attempted to cancel my membership to go to a less expensive gym, they neglected to explain to me that I needed 30 days notice despite the fact that I cancelled two weeks in advance and then charged my account and refused to reverse the charge. They will nickel and dime you for everything they can and there is no value in their services.

My favorite gym of all time - I went here 7 years before I moved out of state. Its very well maintained, even during peak hours its possible to get on a machine. The machines they use feel good, there are multiple options as its a large gym. Its open 24 hours and theres been times in the middle of the night where I could practice my basketball free throwing in an empty court. I Its been two years since I went here because I moved away, and no other gym (even AK club locations) has been as good.

The downside is Alaska club (all locations) is it is pretty expensive, and their membership policies are questionable. Be prepared for the financial commitment when signing with AK club, but if you are gonna use the gym frequently and dont mind paying 2-4 times as much as cheap gym, it is worth it
