Very fresh for a climbing gym. They have excellent route setting, Friendly staff, and is very clean. There walls are pretty and new. All of the climbing holds are big and they even have some no tex holds. They also have a Kilter Board as well. Besides from mabye there size, this climbing gym is peak

Extremely clean gym with a good variety of boulders. Their weightlifting area had a ton of machines for a full workout. Didnβt get an opportunity to check out the yoga or cycling rooms but nice to know theyβre an option.
My only callout is their setting style is not very short person friendly. For those with <5β wingspan all moves are really big for V2 and higher

I'm an intermediate climber who really enjoys the sport, but this gym makes it difficult to enjoy. Despite the clean atmosphere and friendly staff, the routes are the main issue I have.
The routes are either far too easy, or far too difficult OR just require you to do some crazy jump up to another hold (not really the climbing I'm used to... or enjoy.). Personally, I'd like there to be one MAYBE two showy/jumpy routes at a gym, but it seemed to be around 50/50 here, so I could not get the workout I desired.
Most of the routes do not have a rating associated with them so it makes it even harder for an intermediate to determine which routes to attempt.
My final gripe for the place is that the grips themselves are very abrasive on your hands, my friend and I both got blisters from them, and we climb every week no issues in Oregon.
I will be coming back periodically to see if it improves. Great location for me, unfortunate routes.

Changing my previous 5 star review after a recent visit. The setting now feels overly compy and almost every single climb had a dyno, pogo, or some kind of power move on jugs.
It feels like the setting is geared towards showy moves and exclusively gym climbing instead of training for outdoors. Almost no crimpy routes were set but tons of power jug hauls.
I like the facility a lot and the staff is friendly but if this is the market theyβre targeting, I wonβt be back.

Seriously though, shoutout to Tomas for making this place such an awesome place to workout. I can only make it about once a week, Mondays before 8am, but itβs something I look forward to all week.
This location is closer than Gilbert for me, and at first I thought I was missing out by not having access to the big walls, but the vibe here alone is worth showing up for.
The gym is always clean, Tomas is always friendly, and heβs really helped me gain a better understanding on how to get the most out of my time at a climbing gym.
It was bittersweet to hear heβs going to be moving on to bigger and better things. Management definitely has big shoes to fill.

My daughter and I were introduced to Alta Boulders by manager Jennifer. She was amazing! She walked us thru all that the facility has to offer beyond climbing (yoga, cycling, fun events and more). My daughter loved her experience and is looking forward to climbing again! So glad that this facility is in our community!

Good gym: very large and diverse, big fitness center and a huge variety of climbing areas.
Many routes and different styles and difficulty levels. I saw a few v9, not sure there are higher grades but I admit I didnβt have time to explore entire place thoroughly.
Grading tends to the sandbag side but mostly fair.
Would definitely come back if Iβm back in town.

My experience here was phenomenal! I usually stick to only top rope and auto belays, so at first, I was pretty disappointed to realize there were only boulders. I nearly walked out, however Ben greeted me and expressed reasons bouldering may be worth a go for the day. He was able to help me with techniques that lessened the wear on my hands and also gave me beta that helped with my confidence. Thanks to Ben, I may just try bouldering and Alta Boulders again. Wonderful facility and customer experience.

Great bouldering gym. Place also has an amazing gym for regular workouts. Lots of great routes, great variety, and well spaced out which is important with the traffic they get from college students when it can get super busy. The staff are friendly and helpful as well which is great!
My only knockoff comes from the lack of more down climbs. The walls here are pretty tall and the routes are pretty tough. Usually there are only 1 - 3 down climb holds with no down climb foot holds. Even then after the 3 down climb hold youβre still a good 8-10 feet off the ground depending on the climb. This can be a little sketch especially since the mat is a little bit harder.
I think it would be a great idea and safer to have an extra down climb or two hold, and maybe even foot holds for the down climb as well. Iβm not the only one that feels this way.
Definitely give this gym a chance!

The gym is nice, but they don't set. Ever. As of writing this the cave section of the gym hasn't been changed since the first week of November. Half of the gym hasn't been set since December. The whole gym SHOULD be brand new every month. How are they going to up their prices and never set new routes. They either don't have enough route setters or they're just lazy. This complaint isn't new either. I leave the same suggestion on their suggestion box pretty often. Every time I leave one I swear the time between new sets gets longer. That new gym in Tempe is looking like the place to go.
*Update to their response* 8 weeks is fine for the big walls, but for a boulder gym??? Most people finish their projects, I assume based off my experience and other climbers, in a week or less. I don't know anyone that takes up to two months to work on a gym project. Maybe I've just been spoiled by gyms in other states, but 2 months is too long.
The cave is being reset this week. Great. That should've been done the first week of December. Or January to stay in line with the 8 week claim. Not the first week of February. 3 months untouched is ridiculous

This gym has the best hours as they open early and allows me to get my climb in before I start work without having to wait for routes to clear up. Cleanest mats in the valley and that are in great condition and don't hurt to fall on. Everyone there is super friendly especially the early morning crew.

This place is pretty solid. The staff is friendly, their orientation is good, not too long but covers everything. The routes for beginners are ok, not a lot of creativity, mostly ladders, but thereβs a big gap to their V2βs, which made progressing a little discouraging/difficult for my friends just starting out. Their amenities are pretty good too, cycle room, yoga studio, weights and fitness room, although the fitness room is a little cramped, but there is something for everyone.

I was really surprised with the creativity and variety of styles at this gym. I had a great experience climbing here over the weekend. The comp style wall has some really awesome problems, but the highlight of the session was definitely the many slab problems scattered throughout the gym. There were at least 3 v7 slabs that were very fun to work on. Additionally, there was a random 1 move problem where you attempt to match a small pocket from a crucifixion type position. I think that kind of creative foolery is such a scarce thing at gyms. There was even a campusy v5 problem with a paddle dyno that I swear was one of the best fives I've done. Also, the v10s felt like v10s, which is a good thing. Very psyched to visit again next time I'm in town!

Coming from out of town, this place is super cool! Donβt remember the guy at the front desk but he was super nice, gave me a tour and we practiced falling. Half of the gym was closed off due to a comp but otherwise there were still climbs I could do. I do V1-V2 and these felt correctly graded. Holds were of good quality, and routes werenβt stacked upon each other. My usual gym has the most uncomfortable mats, but here I felt comfortable falling since they were so nice. The head route setter introduced themselves to me which made me feel very welcome. Everyone was really nice and the facility is so clean and well-maintained. Iβll definitely be back!

The things I love about Alta Boulders:
- The staff is always great (shout out to Nic!), facilities are clean and fully loaded, and I love the atmosphere at both gyms.
- I'm colorblind and their holds are very distinct from one another making route reading a hell of a lot easier than other gyms.
- I can't comment much on the grading system other than it does seem to be consistent between both gyms. Some softer grading overall maybe?
My one gripe about this gym is that there does not seem to be any climbing related training tools. No hang boards, no campus board, etc. I would like to see a similar setup to the upstairs bouldering at Alta Climbing. Also if they could close an hour later like the other gym, I would be so happy! =D

Wonderful location if you're looking to Boulder specifically. Staff on site are wonderful and extremely helpful with any questions you may have. This location has an arch, cave, slab wall, comp wall, and plenty of room for other bouldering problems. The routesetters here are very creative and make exciting routes for each grade. This location also has classes for yoga, a small workout facility, and has regular deals on day passes along with a fine shop selection up at the front.

This is the best climbing gym in the valley (in my opinion). My husband and I moved to AZ last summer and our first priority was to find a climbing gym. We happened to give this place a walk-through and fell in love immediately. We literally came back the next day because we were itching to try the routes we had seen.
What sets this gym apart:
- An entire wall in the gym dedicated to world-cup competition style boulders. The route setters reset half of the wall with new problems every.single.week.
- Foot washing stations in the bathroom... Anyone who owns a pair of climbing shoes knows how nice this is.
- Cleanliness is a priority. The holds are clean, the mats are clean, the bathrooms are clean, etc.
- The layout is perfect. There is ample room to rest, walk around, map out problems, and climb without feeling like a hazard to other patrons. I get that this isn't something a lot of other gyms can control, but it's so nice to not feel like you might fall on someone (or vice versa) every five seconds.

Good, clean bouldering gym with plenty to keep you busy. Mats were soft. Route setting seemed to be a little all over the place in terms of grading. Some problems of the same grade were super easy and then some were very difficult, more so than any other gym I've ever been to. I was kicked out of the workout area, which is not seperated from the climbing area, for "not wearing close toed shoes". I have been to MANY climbing gyms and have never experienced this. I'm not sure what close toed shoes are meant to protect you from in a climbing gym where nearly everyone is walking around in climbing shoes, sandals or barefoot. I was not offered an explanation.

As a local valley climber since 1993 that started at the original gym here in town. I will have to say in the last 30 years new gyms consistently pop up and they always one up on each other. This is without a doubt the highest end gym in the valley in my opinion. I have yet to make it to the Gilbert location that'll be next week. That being said I have set routes in three states and in 9 gyms and I have never been as envious as I am of the route setters in this gym. The size of their hold vault must be astronomical. Yes I'm jelly. This will now be my forever home gym.

I'm not a bouldering aficionado but was impressed with the offering. For nubie like myself there were enough courses that I can try (and complete). They appear to have many more courses in increasing degrees of difficulty - something that can sustain my interest and progression for some time. I suspect they mix it up over time as well. Friendly atmosphere to boot. Give it a try if you are looking for a novel way to work out - but please be careful - it is safe if you are sensible; foolishness draws its own dangers.

Very good gym with modern setting and holds. The World Cup wall makes compy movements accessible for all levels of athletes, but is generally a little too easy to train seriously for high level events. The staff is incredibly friendly and they offer a large fitness area with everything you need for hypertrophy or sport specific training. The only downside is the lack of boards, there is no moon, kilter, campus or even hang boards. Overall one of the best bouldering gyms in AZ.

Info here is accurate as of July 2022.
Love this gym. Alta Climbing and Alta Boulders are the best rock climbing gyms I have ever been to. Unlike some other gyms in the valley, Alta has A/C which is crucial in Arizona summers. The staff is always super friendly and helpful.
At least for the Chandler location, sections of the gym are regularly changed out, normally every week. This means that you have a brand new gym about every month and a half! I know the Gilbert location also changes out their routes, but I am not aware of the exact frequency.
The gym equipment is also really nice. If you can only afford one gym membership but also want to rock climb, Alta's gyms at both locations are very nice. The equipment isn't as extensive as a dedicated weightlifting gym but it is much more than you would expect at a rock climbing gym.
One underrated part of the gym IMO is that they make canceling super easy. Sadly, I had to say goodbye to this gym as I moved out of state, but the cancelation process was super easy. All I had to do was tell an employee that I wanted to cancel my membership and that was it. A lot of commercial gyms have a 7 day or even a 30 day cancellation policy. Alta does not have this which is a huge plus in case you ever need to cancel your membership.
The only drawback is that the gym is a bit on the pricy side compared to other gyms but you get what you pay for. High quality holds, clever route setting, and super friendly staff are all worth the price.
From beginner to expert, I 100% recommend this gym.
Also, if you are a member you get one free guest pass a month to take a friend.

Routesetters provide diversity in difficulties. My group has climbers doing V0s all the way up to V6s and we all have plenty of fun challenging routes here everytime we show up. New routes weekly too so there is always fresh climbs available.

A new favorite bouldering gym! Itβs spacious, clean, and countless routes that are updated regularly. Then thereβs the weight training area, which, in my opinion, is almost as substantial as a full blown fitness center. The spin studio is also surprisingly outfitted with nice equipment and great instructors. Unbelievably, the gym still has even more to offer (yoga studio, cafe). Alta may be the best new addition to the East Valley in the last 5 years. Come check it out!

Really fun and creative problems! There is always something new every week. The style of the problems seem to replicate more competition-style than outdoor-style. The fitness center with the machines and free weights is really nice. Also the locker room is clean!

Great facility. As a new climber Iβve grown to love this gym. Has lots of routes across all levels that are updated regularly. Always very clean and a good community. Hours are long and accommodating to everyoneβs schedule. Depending on the day it could be very busy or very light but it tends to be a good crowd of supportive and polite people. Donβt have to worry about kids birthday parties being unruly or no routes available. Staff are always great and they host events that show they care about the community.
Gym facility could be larger, really only has a home gym set up plus some extras. But itβs a nice plus regardless since itβs not at an extra cost!
