Safety is not a priority here (and other complaints):
---
(SAFETY) Lead climbers beware:
In the past week, three quickdraw quick links for lead climbing have broken during climber falls. I was informed that there has been no safety inspection of the quick links since incidents. This is life-supporting PPE -- if it breaks, climbers could die. A climbing gym must prioritize safety above all else. An inspection of all quick links should have been the gym's first action after the first incident.

In the technical documentation, the manufacturer(s) require two particular action that the gym does not follow:
1) The quick link nut to be torqued upon first installation according to the manufacturer's specification. I have it on good authority that gym does not even own a torque wrench.
2) The quick link must be periodically inspected a minimum of once every 12 months. Three separate failures indicate that the gym does not periodically inspect their life-saving equipment.

Included below are the part numbers of the affected equipment. Technical documentation can be found at these sources.
* Petzl Djinn Steel Axess Quickdraw: M060EA00
* Petzl Go 8mm Quick Link: P015AA01
* Mallion Rapide Large Opening EN Quick Link: MRGOZ08.0 EN (note: Petzl sources their quick link from Mallion Rapide and re-brands it as the Petzl Go 8mm.)
---
(SAFETY) Top-rope climbers beware:
There are hazards at the top of the rope climbing wall which have caused injury (such as cuts) or have been reported as an injury risk, yet no mitigating actions have been implemented.
---
(CLEANLINESS):
The gym's standard of cleanliness is in steady decline. This is especially noticeable at the Alta Boulders gym. Please hire a janitorial staff or contract cleaning service.
---
(COMPLAINT) Rentals are not free with guest passes:
The guest pass does not include free shoes and harness for your guest. If I bring friend to the gym, they still need to pay $8 for gear. I believe that free rentals should be included in the guest pass.
---
(COMPLAINT) Alta advertises the Olympic speed wall but does not permit public access:
Their website says "The only rock climbing gym in Arizona featuring an OLYMPIC SIZED 15-METER COMPETITION SPEED WALL!" The speed wall is not open to members of the public. This is blatantly false advertising.
---
(COMPLAINT) Management seems disconnected from their workers:
Rumors of poor work culture have been shared freely among the community. The management does not treat their employees well, nor does management listen to the feedback that their workers provide. The workers are treated as expendable people that can quickly be replaced by the next high schooler in need of a job. This taints the whole experience for a climber who just wants the simplicity of climbing plastic when they can't climb real rocks outdoors. The work culture should not be so bad that it impacts casual climbers with a membership.

This gym is the most amazing facility I have ever experienced! I was visiting from out of town and was so excited to check out the gym. I’d like to give a shoutout to Kyle specifically for assisting me in deciding if I should purchase a day pass or a punch card. I decided on the punch card since the punches don’t expire for 3 years. He really went out of his way to explain the belay check and what I would need to do if I wanted to bring family or friends who have never been before. This gym really thought of everything including a drink station, a kids area, auto belays, an amazing non climbing gym, very nice restrooms with showers and a foot dryer!, a very nice gear shop, and climbs for every level climber. The setting here is great and the routes have a very nice flow with a lot of variety. The only thing that wasn’t my favorite is that all of the top ropes have a GriGri+ already on the rope. But maybe it’s for insurance reasons and it’s not that big of a deal, just not my favorite belay device to use. Even when the gym is busy, there is plenty of room and it doesn’t feel crowded. I travel for work a lot so I have seen quite a few facilities. There are some amazing climbing gyms in Southern California. I am not going to name these facilities but if you’ve been in that area, you know which ones I am talking about. Alta climbing gym is the best and most thought out facility I have ever seen. I would highly recommend! I seriously want to move to Arizona so I can train at this facility!

Came in from out of town on a day pass. Was greeted with some amazing customer service, who got me set up and went through a brief orientation.

I was limited to auto-belays since I was solo but the variety of auto-belays is great. There are so many top rope courses, I NEED to come back with my belay partner.

Small amenities really helped the gym stand out. Things like an ice machine, hand washing station with lotion, a foot washing station in the locker room, and in house sole repair.

There was a great variety of courses for everybody. And grading felt true to scale.

If I lived in the area, I would happily make this my home gym. And this will be a sure-stop every time I'm in Phoenix/Gilbert.

I don't remember the guy's name at the front desk, but s/o to you for making me feel so accommodated.

5/5 Highly recommend this gym, especially for top rope climbers. (Although I was invited to their bouldering exclusive gym in Chandler)

TOP TIER! High walls, clearly marked and graded routes. Fun route setting. Clean, & mostly good lighting. I’m not a fan of the first figure 8 being tied for you + already having a belay device. I like to use my own equipment + tie my own knots. That’s really my only critique. Super nice staff as well!

Best place ever! The vibes at this gym are unmatched and the whole experience is great. I come here very often and it’s always a blast.

They always have fire music playing. The best part is that it’s always the perfect volume and there are no issues communicating with my climbing partner while the music is playing, even on the 55 foot walls.

A membership here is worth every $. Very impressed.

I've been a member for a while, and have experienced two major issues with the gym.

1) The music volume has always been an issue, but it has become increasingly overwhelming lately. Attending yoga classes isn't relaxing because the gym music takes over the music being played in class and takes away from what is supposed to be a relaxing atmosphere. Communication during belays is extremely difficult with the music, which hasn't felt safe while lead climbing. I know others have mentioned the music volume before, but nothing ever seems to be done about it. I have been to many other gyms and the music is always at ambient levels. Alta is SO unnecessarily loud.

2) There are frequently children in the fitness and training area with coaches who are not supervising them diligently enough. I have seen kids swinging from the cages while people were lifting, and I have had the training area inundated with kids near the fall zone when I am on the boards. The fitness area has age 14 and over posted as a rule, so at the very least if they are there as part of a program or team there should be a high level of supervision for it to be safe for everyone.

I want to continue coming to Alta but am considering switching to a gym that isn't so loud with seemingly no consideration from management in regards to the numerous complaints about this from its members.

I love this rock gym so much! Their facility is awesome and there's plenty of space!
Although my in person experience has been great, I've been requesting pricing on corporate memberships for over a month now but no one will get back to me.

Edit: After leaving this review the owner promptly called and apologized for the lack of communication :)

Been a member climbing and training (🏋‍♂️) here for 1.5 years and it is my all-time favorite. Lots of sport climbing, great auto-belay setup with 50ft routes and lots of options. The fitness area is well equipped for functional fitness and rarely busy (as long as I'm there before the afternoon/evening rush.) Bathrooms/showers always clean. Community is really cool/nice. I meet someone new almost every day and everyone has been nice and friendly.
Employees and management are friendly. Worth every penny.
Went on a road tour and climbed in L.A, Dallas, Bentonville, Atlanta, Chicago and New Jersey and I could not WAIT to get back here to Alta.
*update 8 months later
Still dope
*update later later
A crucial element of Alta that is deeply valuable to me is the fact that they let me train and climb without requiring a shirt. I have had an autistic sensory sensitivity since childhood that makes athletic activity in a shirt so intensely uncomfortable and distracting that it makes the activity not even worth doing. Alta is the only climbing gym I've ever been to that allows this, and it's made all the difference in my life, especially in the desert where trying to train outside is insane at 110°+. Thanks Alta!
**update later later later
Alta's got that quality butt-paper, no 1/2 ply gas station cheese wheel nonsense 👍

There is absolutely no contest when it comes to Alta. I have visted nearly all of the climbing gyms in the valley and Alta is unmatched. The walls are the tallest, funnest, and the environment is purpose built. We were members here a long time and I thought the value was there. The community is so welcoming too. Seriously go make friends and have a great time! They've recently streamlined orientation too which is a huge bonus. All of the staff here is great! And listen if they get after you about sticking to the rules, remember. They want you to be safe! So lose the ego and climb safe!

This gym has really beautiful, state of the art facilities. The extra tall climbing walls are especially great, especially for those training to climb outside! I really appreciate the little touches, like an ice maker, a sink that is not in the bathroom for hand washing and lotion- gotta keep those hands from drying out! The staff is also really responsive, when I found a rope with an issue, the staff replaced it right then.
I am considering a membership here but my biggest hang up is that the music is SO loud. This is a serious problem because 1) I can’t communicate with my belay partner, which is a safety issue. 2) It is difficult to work through a tricky climbing problem when it feels like Lady Gaga is coming out of the speaker and punching you in the face. 3) Climbing gyms are traditionally a place of community and it is hard to make friends when I have to yell over the music like I am at a club.

*Update, spoke with the front desk, after they asked me why I wasn’t a member, and shared my concerns with having difficulty communicating with belay partner due to music volume. They said that college age climbers complain if they turn it down and the owner also expects the volume to be up high when he comes in. My partner and I chose NOT to join and we are now happily members at Climbmax gym now.

To preface, I have been a member at Alta for a little over three years, and I absolutely used to love it. Unfortunately, it seems that over the past year or so, the gym has lost focus on what made it so great in the first place. Besides the recent switch to the Beta app (which does not function properly at all), routes are rarely reset, closures of the wall have increased without warning, and today I found out they will be turning the fitness studio into a child daycare center. It seems that Alta has transitioned from a gym that solely used to focus on fitness and community, into more of a children’s playground. After being a member for so long, I am sad to say that when the cycling classes are no longer occurring at the main gym, I plan on cancelling my membership due to the loss of benefits that were once provided. I am all for making the gym a place where everyone can enjoy it; but it seems that the core values of being a great gym that focuses on climbing and fitness have been completely lost.

Source: Google

★ 1

Nice gym but essentially a giant daycare. Once a month they have a competition and half of the routes are shut down. They also take forever to change their routes because they are focused on competitions. You can definitely tell they prioritize events for kids rather than the adults who pay for the memberships.

Sounds like they are taking the cycling classes away so they can expand their childcare services as well.

The app they make you use is nonfunctional and class schedules are unreliable.

Hope management can make some changes because it’s going downhill.

★ 1

I have been a loyal member of this gym since its opening date and have always been quick to introduce friends and family to Alta and the climbing scene. Recently, however, I have been increasingly disappointed. The move over to the Beta app has caused major disruptions to my schedule, as classes are unable to be booked online and the schedule itself is consistently incorrect. If it was just affecting me, I would grin and bear it, but the longer this continues, the more obvious it is that they have no respect for their instructors or staff. I attempted to attend a cycling class this week and found that they have already begun to break down the cycling room, without informing the coach that they would soon be out of a job. In any other workplace, that conduct would be completely unacceptable.

In addition to the issues described above, there has been an obvious decline in the amount of routes set and the lack of communication around wall closures has been frustrating.

All of these issues have been voiced to the staff, but telling members to be patient month after month certainly gets old.

This gym has state of the art facilities that are clean and well taken care of. The equipment is in good shape. The tall walls are great for endurance training. The gym also has a good amount of weight training equipment. It has potential to be the greatest climbing gym in the greater Phoenix area. For the price of membership, however, I'm inclined not to join due to the volume of the music. Some music is normal and even necessary to mask ambient noise, but every time I've gone, the music is ear-splittingtly loud. I go to climbing gyms to practice climbing, not to be in a club atmosphere. This is particularly a problem as you ascend to the highest points of difficult routes where your head is nearest to the constant thud-thud-thud of the speakers and it becomes difficult to concentrate when you need that concentration the most. I can't even imagine training for lead climbing here because it would be impossible to communicate with a belayer.

Updated: last week I was watching Shelly do a new climber orientation. I've been going to climbing gyms since 1998, and I've never seen an orientation as thorough as that! Impressive. I've been climbing for a long time, and I've been to gyms all over the country. This one is the best overall. It's big, clean, and modern. They've managed to strike the perfect balance between beginner routes and more advanced climbs.

This is a kid-friendly gym, and a great place to take your family. They emphasize safety without beating you over the head with rules, like some gyms do.

There are lots of classes and a well-stocked weight room. Their locker rooms are very large and clean, with free lockers! There's an excellent selection of gear--way more than most gyms have.

The owners and staff are friendly and helpful. I waited a long time for this place to open, but it was worth the wait! I love going here with my family.

I really liked the kids area. I've dabbled in indoor rock climbing before and I thought it would be interesting to get my son into (and out of the summer heat). We usually go to the Phoenix Rock gym but decided to check out Alta since it’s closer to home and maybe do an annual pass.

Total waste if you don’t go before 4 pm. Apparently you need to be there between 11-4 pm to be oriented on self belay systems on your first time and will not be allowed to climb the large majority of walls if you go after 4 pm as a result. There is no warning at any time that this is the case or that you won’t get to do every thing when you pay for a day pass. Lame! You pay for auto belay routes and bouldering. So pay +$50 for roughly 15 routes of which many are at or lower than 5.9 rating! Auto belay areas are definitely geared more towards kids or people wanting to climb with kids. Total waste of money and a day pass.

You can get free shoe and harness rentals on your first time there so that was a plus. We got there and were ready with gear rentals by 8 pm. They closed at 11 pm and an employee told us it was significantly less busy than normal. But after we were oriented on the auto belay system we were told we wouldn’t be able to climb on the self belay walls because orientation took 45 mins and after 8:30 there would only be two staff members available. It was a total waste! They had 3 hours to close but still not enough time for orientation? We finished the climbs we wanted in an hour. Laaaaaame. Not a good date spot, not worth the day pass.

Phoenix Rock Gym is a much better alternative for 1/3 the price. Get the POGO PASS for two free visits and try it out. It’s not as new as ALTA but has what you need to enjoy your climb.

I was prompted by Alta via email to leave a review after my last visit.
I love almost everything about Alta. My only gripe, with so many membership discounts available, why no senior discount? I was military, a first responder now retired, as well as a student etc. Alta isn’t cheap, rightly so as it’s a first class gym. I’d do a membership today if they’d cut me the same deal as almost everyone else is eligible for in some form.

This is such a fun place for the whole family! rock climbing for kids and adults, the gym, spin classes, full service locker rooms, and much more. I love the counter you can sit at and get work done while the kids climb. They have wireless charging stations as well. The owners are truly amazing. This is a family owned business which I love!

During my last climb I saw someone brought there 2 year old and the gym let them climb in a huge adult harness where the waistband was up to her chest. The child could easily have fallen and gotten seriously hurt. A gym should never let a toddler climb with an adult harness. Yall should get shut down for that one.

Friendly neighborhood staff with clean fancy walls. Kaitie was a HUGE help— I love her energy and she's a wonderful friendly face to see every time I visit. Moving from Portland Oregon I was worried I wouldn't find a gym that felt like home. Presently surprised by this gym. Tons of accomodations from bouldering, ropes, weight room to clean and safe locker room. Glad to see climbers of all levels here. Picked up a membership my second visit— Helps that it lets me visit the bouldering gym in Chandler too!

Edits:
- moon board has lights now, yay
- the air movement is so great, I wish other gyms put the money into this!
- route setting needs a lot of work but to each their own :)

I’ve been coming to the gym on and off, in big spurts, over the past few years (I think since they opened) and I figured it would be worth writing a review!

FWIW I am primarily an outdoor climber and am generally not interested in gyms full of kid camps etc. I also don’t boulder and primarily lead climb.

Workout / Weight Area:
Pretty extensive weights and cardio stuff, overall I’m pretty psyched when I’m around the area because I can climb and have access to a legit rack, etc

Climbing-Training:
Moon board has no lights (??) but its definitely nice to have that and the tension board available. Hang boards are located in a useless location and they could and should certainly be relocated

Climbing walls:
As others have noted, yeah, there could be better walls suited for lead climbing but it’s a good enough for fitness and there’s enough variety to be entertained on steeper stuff. Hold sets seem solid to me and provide fun variety

Hanging out / the front / overall facility:
Surprisingly decent shop and couches , tables all around. Personally I wish there were more tables with outlets so I could spend the day there working and climbing. There’s a foot wash in the bathroom, good hand lotion, and ice machine (!), lots of cubbies. The place is really well thought out.

So what don’t I really like?

The route setting.

It’s clear to me that this gym isn’t catering to me and isn’t located in an area with tons and tons and tons of rock climbers (although that’s definitely changing) and the money is obviously in getting kids in the door.

But the route setting is always what makes me happy I’m leaving the area again and done climbing inside.

Given that it’s a great facility I really believe if the route setters were simply equipped with better training, workshops, or led by an experienced route setter, I’d give this place 5 stars.

Often the routes are just plain mediocre , if not downright terrible. Superfluous holds on some routes and heinous, impossible to clip stances on others.

Wandering routes, though I appreciate the intention of utilizing more real estate and the creativity, often end up with the rope running really poorly.

It’s hard to know what draws to clip and I’ve seen plenty of people misclip and then have to unclip and reclip elsewhere - this is bad setting.

Lots of draws have tape that isn’t maintained, making already hard to read clipping stances more confusing.

But more than anything the climbing just isn’t very natural, often super thrutchy and weird. This could totally be corrected and it would be awesome!!!

I’d be happy to elaborate more if anyone is actually interested in direct feedback on why I think the route setting is so poor on many of the (lead) routes

Alta Climbing and Fitness set the bar very high. The gym is enormous, has tall top rope, lead routes, and auto-belays at 55' in height, as well as more of the same upstairs with 30' high climbs. The locker rooms are exceptionally clean and have the added bonus of free lockers with digital combinations you can set and use for the day. The staff were all very nice and personable as well. My only recommendation to gym management would be to expand auto-belay options on the high walls, as there are currently only three and are set right next to each other. There is so much variety available to climb. Unfortunately, it isn't that accessible if you come without a belay partner.

We were in from out of town and looking for something fun to do for our daughter’s 5th bday and we took a chance on Alta and wow did it overdeliver. Our 5 year old loved it and so did our 3 year old. They had never rock climbed before and now I wish we had one of these gyms in our area because we would become members asap. Highly recommend for a kids activity where the kids leave exhausted! Unfortunately I didn’t climb today since I wanted to focus on the kids since it was their first time but I definitely had fomo!

The staff is super nice and helpful. I've never had a bad interaction there and the owner is so cool. She talks to climbers, remembers names, she's outside at the butt crack of dawn making the landscape look nice. The gym is very nice inside. Cool and huge shopping section. Tons of auto belay options, they reset routes at a good rate. They have a very nice weight training gym area as well as a room dedicated to cycling. I could go on forever. I couldn't recommend this place enough. There's a nugget ice machine. They hold fun events to encourage people to climb more. They hold yoga and cycling classes. They offer camps and classes related to climbing for kids. They have a decent snack and drink area. They just added a crash pad chair which is super cool. They have two locations so if you get a membership you have two gyms that you can go to. And both gyms are very very nice!

THIS GYM IS NOT A SAFE SPACE FOR WOMEN OR POC! BEWARE. If I could genuinely give less than one star I would. I want to keep this review as brief and as blunt as possible. From the outside this gym seems very friendly and welcoming and the owners do pretend to do a good job at caring sincerely for the quality of their gym but the longer you spend time here you see how ridiculous things get when the polished is slightly wiped away. For starters, the gym is pretty much run by teenagers who are being enabled by the very few adults around to engage in gossip and inappropriate behaviors with guests. One of the shift leads is handsy and doesn't respect personal boundaries. The craziest part is that when you bring these things up to management AND owners they do not care and do not do anything but enable the behavior further. Managers will go into your account and constantly overdraft you or "accidentally" charge you double for classes. Employees face virtually no consequences unless they are sticking up for guests. Another incident that happened here: About 6 months ago a racist white man tried to threaten and intimidate me and a friend out of coming back to this gym. This had been brought to the owners attention multiple times but we were informed by a manager that this man was family friends with the owners therefore would face no consequences even with photo evidence of every racist thing he had said to us. Not to mention extremely fat phobic misogynistic comments. The owners have repeatedly said they would get back to us or update us about the situation but conveniently they keep ignoring the situation. Because gossip is an insane issue here, if you make any sort of complaint staff will start to mistreat you almost immediately. If you are a person of color this gym will not be safe for you. Crazy white teenagers running around saying incredibly racist things while staff enables and encourages it all. The climbing community deserves better than this.

Beautiful facility with diverse and fun climbing walls/routes. The staff in general is excellent, helpful, and positive. All sorts of fitness opportunities here. My only complaint was my child waited patiently in line for the "city scape". When it was finally her turn (and she was the last in line of children), a staff member grabbed the belay, pointed to another wall, and told her to go climb somewhere else because the staff member had group (of adults) who were going on the city scape. They apparently couldn't wait 45 seconds for the 8 year old. I was proud that my child didn't complain or throw a fit, but she did tell me she thought it was unfair (and I agreed).
