A great gym with amazing people, fantastic route setters, and insightful coaches to help you elevate your climbing experience - no matter your level. I can’t recommend this place enough!

My son and I started climbing here a couple of months ago, both of us new to the sport and all I can say is "wow"! The staff at Black Rock is absolutely phenomenal! My son is on the climbing team and Matt and his team do a superb job in guiding the kids to perform at their best.

I cannot recommend this place highly enough!

By far the dumbest thing ive ever heard in my life. They won't let people in on Sundays unless you're a member. Which means I won't ever come back. As the owner of multiple businesses to deny business this way is idiotic. How do you know i wouldn't become a member? Stupidity at its finest

Getting a membership here was the best thing I did this year. Staff is always very friendly and kind. The community is diverse and active. It's become kind of comforting to see other regulars even if i haven't had the courage to say hi yet. The community calendar is really full-- there's something going on almost every night, either lessons or meet-ups or yoga. Very clean, very welcoming vibe.

The boulders themselves are pretty interesting. I've been at it around 3 months, and to my learning eyes the progression up grades seems fairly straightforward vis-a-vis incorporating new techniques and building confidence as you go up.

The fitness area isn't a full gym, but it's way more than any other climbing gym I've seen. Weights, racks, and cable machines. More than enough to train for climbing and plenty to get fit if you're combining it with another program.

Bottom line, if you mean to go with any regularity, a membership is worth it. I've seen people complain about the price, which vexes me, because it's either on par with or cheaper than the other climbing places in Phoenix (with no disrespect to those places-- I love Phoenix Rock Gym). This gym has become my place of choice for any free time and my "third space". Thank you, Black Rock. :)

Also the music is choice. Thanks, Gabe.

Sunday started off wonderfully with a relaxing morning, and we had plans to follow it up with an exciting afternoon at Black Rock Bouldering Gym. I’d been there a couple of times before and had a great experience, so I talked it up to my wifeβ€”who was really looking forward to trying it out with me.
We packed our gear and made the drive out, excited for the day. But when we arrived and tried to purchase two day passes, we were immediately turned away. Apparently, Sundays have β€œmembers-only” hoursβ€”a policy we weren’t aware of and a detail that, silly us, we didn’t realize we needed to look into before heading outπŸ™„πŸ˜’πŸ˜‘

We're members at another local gym that doesn’t do exclusive hours, so the idea of being turned away at the door wasn’t even on our radar. We kindly asked the front desk if they could make an exception, considering we had driven out of our way to be there instead of just going to our neighborhood gym five minutes from home. But nopeβ€”rules are rules, even if it means turning away enthusiastic visitors (paying customers) mid-day on a weekend.

What a gem. Black Rock Bouldering Gym is a great all around facility. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable, and they make newcomers to the sport(like me) feel welcome and at ease. There is a wide variety of walls and plenty of problems at all levels of difficulties. I had a blast my first time, and have been back several times since. They also have a workout room, which is included in your visit.

Update: they have made amazing upgrades in the past years, adding twice the climbing routes including an overhanging section aptly named "the beast"! The weight training facility has some new cutting edge stuff, on top of the moon board and crack training area. The yoga studio has been revamped and a myriad class options exist. Great stuff, get in here and climb on!!

This is my favorite gym by far. If I ever have a hard day this is my go to place to blow off some steam and spend time with an amazing community. The staff is so friendly and literally makes my day.
The setting is so creative and challenging to make you a stronger climber. I highly recommend this wonderful place. Definitely found a family and community here. The owners are always a delight and I love the recent community nights they’ve been having. 10/10 would recommend ;)

Such a great gym. The climbs are great and get changed out regularly so there's always something new to try. Great classes and community night is an awesome way to connect with local climbers and businesses. I've met some great climbers for outdoor adventures both among the staff and other members.

Creative routes, helpful staff, wonderful classes, and a safe and welcoming community. I love BRBG!

I'm realizing I've never left a review for this gym that has been a second home for me over the past 5 years... let's fix that. BRBG was the first place I ever climbed beyond a child rock wall. I came in with the goal of getting stronger and building confidence before climbing outdoors for the first time. I ended up with a hobby that helped keep me grounded during a tough season of life, a wonderful community that made me feel welcome and stoked every time I walked through the doors, and I met the majority of my closest friends I do life with now.

I also worked here for awhile before jumping back into my full-time career, so I've seen behind the scenes how the owners treat the staff AND over the past two years what it feels like to be a regular member. Best gym in the valley, 10/10 recommend. πŸ₯°

I found Black Rock Bouldering Gym during a big transition in my life, and it quickly became one of the most important and positive turning points for me. Over the past five years, this gym has been more than just a place to climbβ€”it's been a place to grow, connect, and thrive.

I've taken their climbing, yoga, and fitness classes, all of which are top-notch and led by passionate, knowledgeable instructors. But what’s really made the biggest difference is the community. I’ve met an incredible group of friends through climbing hereβ€”we climb together regularly, hang out outside the gym, and even take trips together. That kind of connection is rare and invaluable.

The staff and owners at Black Rock are genuinely some of the kindest and most supportive people I’ve ever met. They go out of their way to make everyone feel welcome and cared for, and they’ve built a space that fosters growth, positivity, and belonging.

Whether you're new to climbing or have been at it for years, Black Rock Bouldering Gym is a truly special place. I can’t recommend it highly enough.

This is a great gym. Really good setting, clean holds with appropriate turnover sets. Their grading is also on point. This is a really good gym, especially for people who are serious about climbing. I find the climbing to be set harder than the other gym I go to but every time I come here, I see a decent group regulars who climb in the V2-V6 range who are better and better at climbing every time! I'm actually really impressed, because I can't say that for the regulars at the other gym. If you're new to climbing, they have climbs for people at all levels.

Super friendly staff as always. So many climbing routes to choose from. Comfy seating area to work a little from your laptop if needed. Just wish they, or any climbing gym for that matter, were closer to Central Phoenix. Not a quick public transit way to get to any of the gyms. With UA, ASU, Phoenix Community College, the rich private high schools and public high schools on or near Central, a growing young professionals population - there is a hot bed of potential for a gym in CenPho area.

I just moved to the Phoenix area and looking for a new bouldering gym. I realized my previous gym set a high standard that Black Rock Bouldering Gym sadly did not live up to. The sets seemed fun but grades seemed inconsistent with flashable V3/V4 but then couldn't get many V2s because the holds were slick from all the traffic (especially the feet, could barely tell the color of the hold from all the rubber). For me, I would end up paying more for Black Rock than my previous gym with an overall drop in quality of holds and setting.

When I initially started going in 2020 this place was nice and clean. I guess now that Covid is in the past they don’t feel the need to clean. There is so much chalk on all the holds that it is hard to get grip on anything.the footholds are completely black. It smells like dirty feet.
They have brushes hanging around the floor sometimes, so you can clean yourself. However, they have employees just sitting around who could certainly go around and clean a couple times a day. It’s really disappointing how filthy it is. I’d consider getting a membership if it was taken care of.

This gym has potential, however I left earlier than I’d like to have given the day pass price. The facility has quite a bit of space for bouldering, unfortunately half of it was closed when I went and they still charged $23.

The holds were some of the dirtiest and shoe polished I’ve ever seen- I’m not sure they’ve ever been touched with a pressure washer (or maybe it’s the plague of all Phoenix gyms) I’ve climbed on cleaner home spray walls. This factor made their hardest climbs annoying to try. I would have also like to see some smaller holds on their hardest climbs- it was hard to get a serious training session out of my visit.

With that all said, the facility is nice enough and has an old school training basement vibe to it. I much prefer this sort of space over the clean cut, dentist-office lighting modern gym. This place could definitely be sick if they improve the route setting, clean their holds, and set climbs harder than v8. I’ll check it out next work trip and see what’s changed!

EDIT: I am obligated to mention that if you have any issues with the facility, Chris, the founder, will reach out to you directly and make it right.

Descent lay out and spread of grades and nice use of terrain. I think it’s a little pricey considering what they offer( boulders and small workout area/training boards). Mediocre setting at best. Grades were very inconsistent and movement leaned towards being either really reachy or very scrunchy with limited/no other options for differing heights. This was true across all grades.

I went to BRBG for over a year and it was one of the best I've ever been too. The staff are friendly and helpful. Regulars and advanced climbers were never "too good" to help out beginners and the facility was fantastic.

Just dope. Visited for a day and was super happy with the gym on the whole. Boulders had a great ratio of flow/commercial type of movement to comp style (with some str8 BANGERS in there) with generally comfortable positions and hold type for the moves (I don't think this can be said for most gyms I've been to). I'd say the grades are stiff overall but very consistent, which is all that matters to me. Great training facility and setting with a welcoming atmosphere. Getchoo some.

Members only Sunday 10am - 12pm. I made the mistake of going off of the Google page and not their website. Black Rock Gym is clearly the best gym out of the 6 I researched in Phoenix. The gym clearly looks better than Movement, Bouldering Project, and Brooklyn Boulders franchises in other cities too. The facility is large, the setting looks superb, and the bouldering structures are all unique. Unfortunately I could not try them out since I’m passing through town. Not sure the reasoning on the members only hours on Sunday. No gym has this policy in larger cities currently. We had to go to another gym disappointed. Just take my money lol!

New to town & checked out black rock first, I don’t do much rope climbing. Went during lunchtime, so I had most of the gym to myself. This made it feel even bigger than it already is. Impressive amount of routes & a fantastic variety. Some are outrageously long on β€œthe beast”…I think they are β€œYosemite grade”? Whatever they are, they take a lot of endurance. Personally really enjoyed the sections without grades (just numbered)…what a cool way to get feedback from the community to the setters. PLEASE keep those around! Excellent facility with even better staff. Black rock is an entirely bouldering focused facility with a wide variety of problems that regularly rotate. The setters do a great job setting different styles and the overall rotation schedule means that you have enough time to work your projects but there are always new problems to try as well.

Classes are offered as part of the membership and I have enjoyed both the yoga and fitness classes.

Black Rock also has an excellent training space which includes squat racks / benches, dumbbells, hangboards, campus ladder, pegboard, and a moon board.

There are several climbing gyms in the area but if you enjoy bouldering this is definitely the best choice.

Went bouldering for the first time here with some friends who are regulars - the facility was excellent, the staff were friendly, but the most impressive thing by far were the other people there. Extremely friendly and welcoming environment, and a great workout to boot.

Great bouldering and great people! I randomly decided to try out climbing and made this my first stop. From there, I visited a few others in the Valley and made my way right back to BRBG to sign up for a membership. Friendly staff, knowledgeable coaches, lots of wall space, and friendly members. If you have any interest in trying out bouldering, this is where you should go!

The climbing was cool and challenging. It was a good time , even though climbing isnt my cup of tea, the employees were cool and good atmosphere.

Don't forget to read the Fine Print. Good facility with good staff. But saddens me to say you must read the Fine Print when it comes to auto bill cancellation from this place. I don't see it listed on their website that you have to get 10 day notice to cancel but you do.

Truly excellent place to climb. They do a great job cycling through routes so that there is always new routes to try and to challenge you. I've only done the month membership for 1 month and I'm definitely going to do the yearly membership.

I adore Black Rock, I've been a member for about 2 and a half years. Got to know them through their friendly Friday discount and just got hooked! Definitely some of the best indoor boulderingπŸ‘

The new expansion to the other half of the gym added a lot of great training areas and a lot of cool climbs. The staff is always friendly and helpful. All routes get reset on a cycle and the featured-routes are pretty fun too.

Edit:
After considering all aspects of the gym and having direct contact with the owner, I decided I was being unfair with my original rating. Overall, the gym and the staff are very friendly and if you’re a beginner it is a good place to climb. You can tell that the management truly cares about making this place succeed. That being said, the routes still seemed iffy and I will have to update my review in the following months when I come to Arizona again. I do not think the current set is up to industry standards as of 12/26/2018, but I look forward to seeing what is set in the future.

Original:
I wish I would not have gone here. The setting is so poor is laughable. It feels like nothing has been forerun. I did not see any double digit problems. If you’re coming from out of state, or are a decent climber, skip this gym. It’s full of rental shoes and routes that didn’t have any thought put into them.

A good bouldering gym. It is not extremely big, But definetly worth a visit, with a nice array of differently graded routes. A nice bonus is the Basketball basket and exercise Area.
Bouldering only, would love to come back.

Hands down the best climbing gym in Arizona. Routes are consistently interesting and accurately graded, holds are clean, and the staff is friendly. It’s pretty far from Phoenix, but well worth the drive for a day of climbing that’s guaranteed to be perfect. It is a dedicated bouldering gym, but it’s done so well that it doesn’t matter.

This was an excellent bouldering gym. I haven't been bouldering in years, decades really. The staff here was extremely friendly and helpful. They got me back on the wall in no time and were very helpful. The gym itself is very well setup with many routes for all abilities. From my very very basic beginner standpoint, there were plenty of places to work. I saw there were some very advanced climbers there as well, it appeared they also had a lot of challenging routes. I would definitely recommend this gym. My favorite in the wider valley area (since afterwards I visited 2 others).

Truly awesome place to train. The owner and staff are fantastic, as is the entire community who climbs there. You'll find support and encouragement whether its your first time or you crush V10.

Facility constantly changes routes, so you'll never get bored with stale walls.

The fitness area is also quite comprehensive to allow you to cross train for when you're planning to slog that heavy trad rack deep into the mountains.

Could not say more good things about this place.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I went to BRBG the first time. I'm a bit old, a bit out of shape, and a lot overweight to start something like climbing. But as soon as I walked in the door I picked up the helpful, friendly vibe coming from everyone. Stephanie at the front desk was informative and encouraging; Keith who taught the two-student class I took was funny, helpful, and had a great, positive attitude. I've just gotten home from my second time there in three days and I'm already looking forward to my next (as soon as I can make a fist again).

I tried this with a friend who's got a membership - used her buddy pass. It was so fun! But harder than it looks like! A worthwhile challenge, an interesting work-out. Something that gets you out of your shell. Everyone was so friendly and interactive. The facility itself is very engaging- there's even a weight room and some other balancing games. Various levels of expertise, so if you're a beginner like me, it's totally fine.

Great indoor rock climbing gym offering bouldering (shorter walls, no ropes). They have other offerings (yoga class, group fitness class, and exercise room), but I haven't tried these out yet. For climbing, each route is designated by color coordinated holds instead of tape which I've seen at other gyms. The routes are changed fairly often, though there isn't a set schedule and some routes are around longer than others. Shoe rentals are available and the only real equipment you need. I've only ever had good interactions with the staff.
