I checked out ClimbMax for the first time yesterday with a couple of people and we were beyond impressed with the atmosphere, hospitality from the owner Sean, route setting, pricing, and the community there. I learned to climb in a small town where there was only one climbing gym and since moving to Phoenix I’ve been searching for that friendly atmosphere where strangers chat with each other and become friends and people look out for each other. Sean is very friendly and knowledgeable. He conducted my friend’s top rope lesson. He’s a fantastic teacher and she was able to pick up the pbus method almost instantly. From what I’ve seen around the valley the majority of gyms have pretty expensive day passes and rentals, sometimes costing around $35. ClimbMax is priced significantly lower which is perfect for someone who’s just getting into climbing and doesn’t want to break the bank. This is the same for membership prices. At some other gyms you’ll easily spend close to $100 for a personal monthly membership while ClimbMax’s is a much more fair price at $55 which pays for its self in under 3 visits. WOW! When my partner and I have more time on our hands we’re planning on starting up a membership and making this our climbing spot! Thanks Sean, we had a blast!

This is a fantastic climbing gym. The routes are great and well-marked. The equipment is in great shape and well-maintained. Sean, the owner, is an awesome instructor and highly passionate individual. He makes an effort to know every member and will immediately make a new visitor feel at home. This gym has small-town community and big-city quality.

This gym has been around a long time and been through a lot. Sean cares about the gym and the climbers that come here. The setting is challenging, thoughtful and creative. Tons of bouldering plus the super cave makes it very unique. Lead walls are plenty challenging, steep and overhung. Great for training. Im glad this gym is still here, excited to see what it looks like in the future.

Legit climbing gym! Routes will challenge you. Solid bouldering options. The tunnel might kill you though when you're trying to capture a photo for the gram. Might be well deserved. Owner really cares about the community and has a lot of heart in this place.

Came here as a beginner climber on a weekend, and was back the next! Tons of fun, seem to have a lot of variety, making it super fun and satisfying even as a complete beginner! 2nd time visiting, there was more experienced climbers that are willing to help, really kind and friendly community, including the owner! Awesome vibes, friendly owners that are willing to help and see you progress. Definitely found a new place to hang out and stay active while meeting awesome new people!

I went to this gym years ago and then unfortunately started a school program that took up most of my time. I just returned after almost 3 years and I am remembering how much I love this place. The community is so fun, the owner and his wife are wonderful, and it’s very inclusive. Whether you’re just starting out or a pro at climbing, this is a great place to be!

Hands down, Climbmax Rock Climbing Gym is the best climbing gym I’ve ever been to — and I’ve been to a lot.

This isn’t just about walls and holds. It’s about the experience — and it’s done right here.

The climbs? Constantly changing. Thoughtfully set. Designed to challenge you, teach you, and push you no matter your level. Whether you're brand new, experienced, or bringing your 5-year-old (like I do), there's something here for everybody.

The staff? Unmatched. They’re not just employees. They care. They take the time to help you understand the skills — and they meet you where you're at. They don’t make you feel like you have to prove anything. They’re supportive, real, and invested in helping you grow.

And the community? That’s where this place really wins. It’s inclusive, it’s welcoming, and it’s one of those rare spots where it feels just as good to hang out and connect as it does to climb.

What makes it even better — Climbmax is active in the community. They support the local farmers market. They’re involved in service projects. They run programs that bring homeschooling families together. This isn’t a gym trying to look community-focused. They are community-focused.

If you're searching for:

A gym that actually teaches and supports you
A space where you and your kids can both thrive
A community that lifts you up — on and off the wall
A climbing gym that puts people first

Then go. Today.

Climbmax Rock Climbing Gym is not just a rock climbing gym, it's a vision of bringing people back to what truly matters... community and family... disguised as a rock climbing gym... and honestly the best rock climbing gym I've climbed at!

I love this gym! I’m visiting Phoenix for the summer and found this gym via a google search. I signed up and signed the waiver online; it was super easy, and the monthly fee is considerably more affordable than other options. On my second visit, I met the gym’s owner: a nice, knowledgeable, and helpful rock climber. He gave me several tips about warmups and about the different kinds of chalk available for sale, here. Overall, this gym has a “down to earth” and community-minded vibe. Highly recommended.

Update 6/2024: the gym is under new management and now a lovely place to climb and train. 5 stars.
I’m an experienced climber, visiting Pheonix for business. I decided to visit this gym since it was the closest to my accommodation. I made a terrible mistake. The routes feel like they were set years ago. Half of the tape if missing and the moves make no sense and have zero flow. The owner doesn’t appear to be a climber and has zero business running a climbing gym. It’s also super empty and I’m the only person in here. I’m still here as I’m writing this... I feel like I should ask for my $14 back.
Based the the comments I’ve read, it sounds like this gym used to be good, and had a lot of regulars until the ownership changed.

Hidden gem. I’ve been to several other climbing gyms in the area, even those that are more modern and new. None of them have improved my climbing as much as Climbmax. Routes are thoughtful and unique, and do a good job of introducing difficult holds here and there in lower grades so that you can improve your technique. People are generally friendly and helpful as well.

My son decided he really liked the rock wall at his former ninja gym, and he pretty much spent the majority of his time on it when there. So we decided to look for a climbing gym! Climbmax came up, and I read it was under new ownership, so decided to give it a shot.

My son LOVES the gym. He loves to boulder, and there are a ton of bouldering walls downstairs and upstairs. the owners are really nice, and they have worked hard to update the gym and foster an encouraging atmosphere. They update their holds regularly and have plenty of crash pads. It's definitely a community-like environment where people help each other and look out for each other. No, they don't have auto-belays, but that's what's great about it! You get to meet people and step outside of your comfort zone.

My son is also on their youth climbing team--they have a comp and non comp option. The coach, Rico, is awesome. The kids learn so much, and are getting so strong. If you're on the fence, definitely stop by and give climbmax another shot. We really like it here.

Unfortunately I had a terrible experience here about a year ago. A tall white man, seems like the owner, with a big beard was the one to help set me and my boyfriend up to climb. He was very off putting by his heavy use of sarcasm when we asked questions while he was showing us how to use the ropes correctly. Then him and his wife got into a huge argument in front of everyone and made it a very uncomfortable environment.
Has this place gone under new management yet? I'd love to come back for the climbs but the owners will totally keep me and my friends away.

I had an absolutely stellar time at Climbmax during each of the multiple visits I had.

I was Phoenix for a few weeks, and planned to sample each of the climbing gyms in the area.

Soon enough Climbmax was next on the rota, but by the time I finished my first session there, I decided to clear the schedule, because I wanted to spend all my remaining free time at Climbmax.

The other gyms in the area are fine and all, but the environment at Climbmax is unique, and only it can offer what it does.

Among other things, it is the only gym I’ve seen in over a decade that uses tape to mark the climbs they set.

These days this method draws a lot of flak, due to its association with the “old school”, rather than the “new & shiny” vibe that other gyms try to project, and I’ve talked to many people who have written off a visit to Climbmax for this very reason.

And this is really quite unfortunate, because here’s the thing: “new & shiny” doesn’t last. By definition it can’t. Eventually everything gets old, so if you only climb for the “new & shiny”, you’ll always eventually find yourself left wanting.

What *really* matters in a climbing gym, is the quality of the routesetting, and the depth of the community. Climbmax has both of these absolutely aced.

Regarding the setting:
their use of tape allows for such a high density of climbs, that you will be extremely hard pressed to run out of things to try. And the climbs are very good. The movement is fun and engaging, and it is clear that a lot of time and thought goes into their sets.

Regarding the community:
You can go into any gym and meet people to chit-chat with and climb next to, but Climbmax was the only gym in which it felt like i was climbing *with* people.
Instead of begrudgingly climbing to sate some obligation to “work-out”, or because they need new Instagram content, Climbmax was the only gym where it felt like people were really truly there for the joy of it.
It was the only gym where I felt welcome to just come in and hangout and talk to staff and patrons on my rest days.
There wasn’t all the ego showboating prevalent in those “new & shiny” places.
There weren’t the superficial interactions with employees.
There were none of the vaguely hostile territorial disputes about who’s turn it is to climb and who’s getting in the way of whom.
There were just people, doing a thing that they enjoyed, who were genuinely eager to share the experience.

I could write an essay on the breath of fresh air that were my sessions at Climbmax, but I’ll leave it at this:
Climbmax is an outlier of gyms (in the most positive way), and it is worth at least one visit before passing judgment.

To deny yourself that authentic experience, to dismiss a gym like Climbmax out-of-hand, simply because it doesn’t fit the narrow mold of everywhere else, would be to do yourself a great disservice.

Old school climbing gym with fun route setting! Lead, toprope, and boulder problems are all fun, and well thought out. Especially the boulder tunnel that connects the two levels. I especially enjoyed that.

What really makes this gym unique, though, are the fantastic owners, Sean and Emily. They were very friendly and engaged with us throughout our visit. Their passion for climbing shines through, and you can tell they care about returning this gym to what it once was.

I have been a rock climber for close to twenty years now, and I have climbed in many gyms. Climbmax has soul, a thing often missing from newer gyms, and is worth visiting.

A lot of low reviews from before the gym went under new ownership about two years ago, things have really been turned around! Amazing environment, great climbs, really unique features that I haven't seen at any other gyms! Been my gym of choice for over a year and a half now, met some really awesome people including the owners. If you don't check it out you haven't seen the some of the best climbing phx has to offer!

Such an amazing gym! Started going about 5 months ago, and began with bouldering. Really cool routes that range in difficulty and a very unique layout. Wasn’t long before my partner and I wanted to try top rope, and Sean did an awesome job showing us the ropes, literally. Do yourself a favor and take a day to visit!

The no-frills, gritty vibe, and affordable price was fine until:
1. There was no soap in the bathroom on two separate occasions.
2. People were climbing with bare feet.
3. A kid that was running around in the gym almost hit me with a frisbee they were throwing.

Good price for rock climbing for a day! The gym is older and walls are about 25’. Plenty of room for multiple climbs but difficult to read due to using the tape method to determine routes. Some cool caves and bouldering routes. Routes are a little more challenging than other gyms but always down for a challenge.

Please make sure to sort reviews by most recent! The gym has been under new ownership and they have done a great job to ensure that routes are varied, challenging, engaging, and most of all fun! Climbmax excels at providing a good time for those who are new to climbing, while giving a strong challenge to long-time bouldering and lead climbers. Overall I'm excited to see this gym continue to grow and prosper!

Low key, not busy, friendly staff. The routes tend to be sandbagged/underrated by at least 1 grade in by opinion, so if you're used to other gyms, expect a route to be harder than you expect.

The cracks are really hard (there are offwidths, hand cracks, finger cracks and 2 fist cracks), and the 2-story bouldering tunnel seems extremely dangerous, but is so much fun. The routes are updated once a month or so by my estimation.

One of my favorite things about this gym is that there aren't a bunch of strict annoying rules and pestering attendants. Such a relaxed atmosphere. Just do your own thing, don't bother anyone else, and the staff will leave you be.

Compared to other gyms, everything is a bit older, well used, more dirty and the routes are marked with tape (eww); however the walls are sturdy, with natural, exciting geometry. It has much more character and personality than some of the gaudy, newer gyms in town that have a squeaky clean finish and blinding bright colors.

This is like your cozy neighborhood dive bar versus a showy, soulless sports bar with loud music and high prices.

I'll take the dive bar any time.

Love this place.

This gym honestly has some of the best bouldering and some amazing top and lead routes out of any of the gyms I have ever checked out. They sand bag everything incredibly. I have been climbing for roughly 2 months now, at Arizona Rock Gym I was climbing V3-V4 and 5.9ish. I went to climbmax and I was struggling with V0s and V1s, and 5.9s. The skill level at this gym is honestly so impressive. If you seriously care about getting good at rock climbing, THIS is your gym. In the 2 months I have been climbing I went from struggling to finish V0s to projecting V6s, and from climbing 5.9, to working my way toward 5.11a. I am now climbing V7 and V8 at AZR in the span of just 2 months climbing at Climbmax. This gym will get you in shape, this gym will force you to get good at climbing.

The environment of the whole gym is extremely friendly. Everyone at the gym is always willing to lend a hand, give you some conversation, or belay you on top rope if you simply just ask. The owner will even come climb with you when hes in, which just honestly shows he cares about the gym.

The membership to is INSANELY affordable, and what you get for the price is just there

If you are a new climber, they have a membership with gear included for just $65 a month. The rental gear here looks amazing, the shoes are some of the highest quality rental shoes of the 4 gyms ive climbed at, they look almost brand new.

Definitely worth checking out. Its never too busy if youre worried about it being too crowded, there are so many routes too that youll honestly almost never run into a scenario where you have to wait for someone to finish to do a route.

Genuinely cant recommend this gym enough, im not getting paid, nor do I benefit in any way shape or form by writing this review, that is just simply how pleased I am with my membership here. I dont think I am going to even look into getting a membership anywhere else now, this is definitely my favorite gym by far.

Old but gold. The walls and pads may be aging compared to the other gyms in the area, but the setting is super creative, and the wall geometry is great. I have been climbing here since I was ~16. I am now 22. The staff has always been very friendly and helpful. I recently brought my best friends here so they could learn to climb, and they had a lot of fun. We've been back a handful of times since then. Over the summer, I was training for a climbing trip to the Bugaboos, and this was my go to spot. The first floor has bouldering and top rope routes. You can either take a staircase to the second floor, or you can climb up a cave that leads to more bouldering. There is a barbell, bench and other strength/conditioning equipment on the second floor as well. There are lockers/cubbies for storing shoes/personal items. And there is a water fountain near the restroom on the first floor. I'd highly recommend this place to anyone looking to learn how to climb, or to those looking for a gym to train at.

Look, this gym has been neglected for years until the new owners took over. Yes, the mats need to be replaced, but this remains one of my top 2 favorite gyms in the valley and I've tried them all. I don't know if it's the old school vibe, the absence of modern holds (still working with the tape system which does wonders for one's beta planning and mental game), or the fact that among all the gyms, the walls feel like you are outdoors. I visited for the first time in years last night and dude some of those ratings are stiff which I loved.

I'm seriously thinking of signing up for a membership. I also love the community feel - climbers help each other figure out where the routes go. This gym has massive potential so keep supporting them! They have a donation thing going for new mats.

I love Climbmax. Ive been a member for maybe 6 months now and im glad i chose this gym. Truthfully, i first chose Climbmax because it was the most affordable option i could find, and to this day it still is. Ive tried many gyms now and honestly none of them have topped Climbmax. Not because they have the newest stuff or the fanciest setup but because the climbing is great and most important to me, the sense of community here is unmatched and cannot be bought. Climbmax is a family, literally. The gym is owned by the sweetest Emily and Sean and their kid who you will meet upon visiting the gym. They are a wealth of knowledge both of them teaching classes at the gym and running it by themselves. Emily has taught me new yoga poses for improved mobility and Sean has coached me through some great climbing specific workouts. Climbmax has made me proud to be a climber and I want to share this love with everyone. If you love climbing, you will love Climbmax, bring some friends it will be a good time.

I visited this gym today with a friend. I haven’t climbed in about 8 years and I was so eager to get back into it! This gym is SO LARGE and there is so much space to play around with bouldering or top rope. This gym is currently getting revamped, I was a little bit thrown off at first that the padding looked a bit rough but then I found out that they are in progress of replacing all of the floor padding (can’t wait to see how awesome that will look). The woman at the front desk was so kind and my friend and I booked the monthly pass after trying out the gym. So many routes to try out and highly recommend you check it out while it’s getting a facelift. We can’t wait to come back!! The only thing that concerns me is that my friend and I were never offered a safety brief for bouldering other than not to boulder passed the first bolt on the top rope sections…maybe that happened because of understaffing issues. I am an experienced climber so I could teach my friend proper bouldering technique, proper falling, using the crash pad, etc so it wasn’t a huge deal for our experience and from what I see on google reviews this gym is really climbing up out of the ashes so I want to give this gym the benefit of the doubt and say that maybe our experience without a safety brief was an isolated one and not common.

This isn't the nicest or the newest gym in the area, but if I was to choose between this gym and PRG which is similar in pricing, I would choose this one in a heartbeat. This gym is less crowded, is less stinky, teaches proper way to belay with a grigri (rather than the outdated way), and doesn't require belayer to anchor into to a rope coming out of the floor (which to me gets in the way of moving and is unncessary on toprope if there is not a huge weight difference between the climber and the belayer.)

One star subtracted because the routes aren't made from holds all of the same color.
