We have been coming here for years to climb, attend summer camps, and now our daughter is on the climbing team. We are consistently impressed with the level of friendliness from the staff and just how nice and clean everything is. We also recently had a birthday party and the coaches who helped us were awesome- shout out to Maisey & Owen for making it a great time for all! Thanks for creating a great vibe and community spot.

Awesome Experience at Gecko Climbing Gym!
We had such a great time at Gecko Climbing Gym! The space is clean, well-maintained, and full of great energy. Even as someone who doesn’t know a lot about climbing, I felt totally welcomed and supported.
One of the highlights of our visit was how kind and encouraging the staff were. A team member spent time belaying my kids multiple times and made them feel so confident and excited. That kind of personal attention made a big impression.
It’s clear that Gecko is community-driven—they’ve created an atmosphere where everyone feels included, whether you’re just starting out or more experienced. We’ll definitely be back!

Went here for the first time yesterday to put my son in a summer camp. My daughter wanted to do it too, but she has a serious illness that prevented us from enrolling her. The staff were SUPER accommodating and let her "shadow" brother's camp as much as she was able. It was an incredible day for our family and we're so grateful!
We were impressed with the number of different climbing areas, layout of the facility, orientation for noobs, quality of instruction, and organization of the kids camps. Very family friendly. Totally recommend this place!

Family friendly for sure! There was a TON of kids running around. I can’t speak for top rope but bouldering didn’t have slab and was a lot of ladders and a lot of overhang. The textures of the holds are rough, and don’t offer a ton of variety. I think the setters do a fine job working with what they got! The staff was friendly! The bathrooms were dirty (loose diapers, pee in the toilets) and they have no changing rooms or lockers, but they do have cubbies and benches everywhere! The upstairs gym is small but I feel like they have a fair amount of machines and equipment. I’d say skip if you’re a solo climber but go if you have kids!!

This is the best climbing gym in Phoenix! The staff is knowledgeable and very friendly. They offer classes for climbing and yoga too. The best about this place is the accessibility; the wide range of operation hours definitely made me stick with this place over trying others. Try out Gecko if you want great climbs and awesome people to be around!

It is crazy how fast you can get more fit here.
I got a membership two weeks ago, and when I started I could barely climb up one route without being completely exhausted. I would go home nauseous and sore for days after.
Just two weeks time and the difference is honestly night and day. I still have a lot of work, but my soreness now only lasts for a few hours, and I'm not going home completely exhausted anymore.
Great way to get into shape, and it's fun which is the important part in my opinion!
Also the yoga is great, me and my wife have been doing their yoga classes, it's harder then it looks! Their yoga room is really cool!

We were shopping around for a new gym, so we decided to give this gym a shot. It was a little unfortunate that part of the gym was closed for competition preparation, but we still enjoyed the sections that were open. Their rock holds were of quality and the routes were diverse in levels. Very ascetically pleasing gym.
The managing staff were nice and quick to manage any needs we had. We’ll come back and check them out once they’re fully set up.

Great community, friendly staff, and I love the classes!! Route problems are a good mix and reflective of route setters who climb a lot outside and the competition style problems. Looking forward to seeing the gym continue to grow.

I previously had a fantastic experience with this gym, however I had to move away when I enlisted in the military. I came back to visit family for several weeks and planning on joining again for that period of time. I originally was told that the membership sign up fee was one time, and when I cancelled I was not informed I would have to pay it again. It made no sense to pause a membership when I wouldn’t be in-state for over a year. I’m not spending $75 just to spend $50 to climb for two weeks. This completely ruined my reception of this gym and I’ll be taking my business elsewhere.

We’ve been going to Gecko off and on since 2020. Still the same great place! Staff is friendly, professional and knowledgeable. The bouldering mats are softer than other gyms I’ve been to. My husband and I were visiting down in Phoenix from Prescott and thought we would check out this gym. We really had a great time! Took the lead test and climbed some really fun well set up routes. Owner Chris was so nice as well as the staff. I bought a few really cute T-shirts. This climbing gym also has a full workout gym upstairs, offers ariel yoga and more. Also has a crack climbing wall! We really enjoyed our day at Gecko Climbing gym and will definitely be going back the next time we are down in the Phoenix area.

Such a great gym! You can tell they put a lot into this gym and take pride in offering a great experience for climbers. The holds feel new, the gym is always clean, routes are set on a consistent basis and it’s always a comfortable temperature. The workers have been extremely helpful and friendly, even offering advice for where to climb outside. The new addition of the upstairs area looks fantastic. It does tend to get very busy sometimes but it’s to be expected when the experience is this good. You can avoid the longer lines for auto belays though by doing top rope, lead climbing or bouldering which usually aren’t as busy.

My Son and I have been coming here for about 5 months now, roughly. We tried this place a few years ago and decided to try it again, been coming here 3 times a week ever since. I've been to every climbing gym in AZ since the early 2000's and we can tell Gecko is something worth investing your time in. Friendly staff, people are chill and not a show off gym like some I've been to. Boulder problems are mellow and challenging when you find the right one. Climbing etiquette is practiced and no one ever seems bothered by much except their own self defeat on the over hanging wall, lol. Climbing routes have a good mix, autobelay is always helpful for a good solo sesh. Glad to be a member and proud to see my son grow into a strong climber like when I was a youngster. Just good Vibes! Thanks Gecko Crew! Friday Night Slack Line suggestion just saying

Great climbing gym with a ton of amenities such as a yoga studio, bouldering walls, climbing walls for auto belays, climbing walls for manual belaying, a crack wall, rock wall treadmill, kilter board, free weights, finger/hang boards, and a jungle gym style training spot in the back. The culture is very laid back and cool, encourages beginner climbers, and friendly. Chris the owner has great customer service and gave me some tips when I was struggling to advance grades. They are currently working quickly to build an upper level, which I've heard will feature some more bouldering. Great place

Gecko is our home rock climbing gym in Phoenix. We love that we can top rope, boulder, and (eventually, after a training class) lead climb here. The gym often has groups, camps, or training going on and I’ve never felt like this has taken away from my experience (which, at other gyms, I’ve felt that way). I also like the climb rating scales, and the frequency that routes and boulder projects change.
The #1 reason that this is my favorite gym in AZ that I’ve found is the community. Everyone I’ve encountered, at all ages, is respectful and considerate of other climbers which is so cool and clear to me that Gecko is going the extra mile to foster a good climbing gym culture here that I’ve never experienced elsewhere.

I stopped in here because I was on a business trip and needed somewhere to climb. This is one of the smallest climbing gyms I have seen, but it is great for its size. About half the gym is bouldering and the other half is climbing. It was a great place to do a solo session because they have quite a few auto belays in addition to the bouldering walls. The place is clean and the staff were helpful and friendly.

Things I like - this is a new gym, super clean, friendly staff and close to my house.
What I dislike - the routes and areas being closed off for classes for kids or just generally kids running around.
I can handle a sandbagged route, but if it’s sandbagged and not even creative, it makes for a frustrating experience. I can send anything up to an 11 at any other gym in the Phoenix area (AZ on the rocks, PRG, Alta etc) but have never managed that with any of their routes other than a green (which I also hate a broad color rating system). It’s disappointing because driving to any other gym is 50+ min away from where I live and Gecko is only 28 min away. I tracked the construction of this gym and was soooo excited to have it so close to me! They’re more expensive than any other gym, but I’m definitely willing to pay if the routes were better. Sometimes I still go just to get in a workout, but find the experience more frustrating than anything. The one time I enjoyed the routes was when they were leftover from a competition. Not sure if they brought in different route setters, but they were actually fun!
As for the kids, I understand it’s a family environment, but I have shown up on a couple occasions and an entire area was closed for class. I have also had kids run underneath me while lead climbing and had kids run smack into me while I was belaying because they just weren’t paying attention.
I really really want to like this place so much more and will continue to visit on occasion to see if the routes have improved. In the meantime, just mostly disappointed :(

I second everything in Mike MacPhee's review below. I do think there are serious safety concerns, I've had multiple times bouldering where I felt I couldn't focus on my climbs because I had to pay attention to whether there was a 4 year old underneath me or not. Have returned to my old gym since, with kids teams that practice much less frequently and seem better behaved.

This is a climbing gym for children. If you have a typical 9-5 job, good luck trying to climb here.
Team practices run from 4PM until the gym closes every weekday, and weekend days are often booked with birthday parties or events. The gym staff, while friendly, are inattentive, and allow kids to run around underneath roped and unroped climbers, monopolize topropes and autobelays, and don't ensure parents are paying attention to their children during events.
Entire sections of the gym are routinely cordoned off for team practices, but the teams are free to climb outside the barricades, so finding available routes can be extremely difficult. I have serious reservations about the lack of safety consciousness between this gym's community and staff.
I've seen more injury near-misses in the one year I've been a member of this gym than in the 20+ years of climbing before. Every climbing session, I wonder to myself "is this the day I see someone fall on a kid, or tie in wrong?"
Memberships at Gecko cost up to 2x more than competing gyms in the Phoenix area. (One year membership for an adult couple at Gecko is $1400. At PRG a one year membership for two adults is $645)
The straw that broke the camel's back for me was trying to climb before a recent competition (for kids only). After leaving work early, and arriving at about 4:30, almost the entire gym was stripped. One of the staff informed us the remaing areas were going to be reserved for team practice starting at 5. While we weren't explicitly asked to leave, the implication was clear.
I'm extremely disappointed in my overall experience at this gym, and have set my membership to expire. We won't be heading back to Gecko :(
Edited to add: Thanks for the reply, and the clarifications, but a major motivator for posting this review and our decision to leave this gym is that our multiple complaints and suggestions in person with gym staff over the past year have gone without attention. If anything, the safety concerns I, and every other negative review to date have raised here, have either remained or even gotten worse. You may consider your prices fair, and they may very well be appropriate with consideration for your business costs, but I don't see the value in new spaces, advanced equipment, or upgrades if I can't find effectively use the facility, safely, on my schedule. I truly hope you find the power to grow into the future, but we haven't seen it.

This gym has a good variety of routes and are working hard to develop programs for all types of climbers.
Their focus is a little more geared towards youth programs than adult programs but they're aware of this and are developing adult classes which is a nice way to develop skills and meet new people to climb with.
The coaches and route setters are all friendly and I've seen them set routes specifically to help people practice moves for some of their outdoor projects.

I love Gecko! Used to climb at AZR and Ape Index but Gecko outpaces both with it's modern design, beautiful interior, and variety of angles for both bouldering and lead climbing. The Kilter board is an awesome asset, in addition to their campus board, several hang boards, and a mini gym in the back. The route setters are incredibly friendly and very experienced, offering climbs that teach good technique, both statically and dynamically. The staff are all wonderful to talk to and are never too busy to help you figure out a certain climb or fix a problem. Gecko's design is hyper-modern, with a fluid grading system and modern walls that allow for a surplus of unique climbs to be created each month. I can't think of anything I'd change about this gym--other than making it bigger! I highly recommend Gecko, it's easily the best in Arizona!

My son attended the summer camp and absolutely loved it! He had so much fun learning about climbing and bouldering. He now has a new hobby! He enjoyed all of the activities they offered in the camp. He was never bored and couldn't wait to go back. The facility itself is clean, organized, and has so much to offer with all of the different rock walls that allow for beginners to pros. And I love the little ceiling star lights in the yoga room. All of the staff was incredibly helpful and friendly! Then partner all of that with the fact that they are finding ways to have a global impact with Orchard Africa for communities in need. Incredibly impressive. I highly recommend!

My husband and I were so happy to have a gym up here in north Phoenix that we signed up before it open. Compared to other gyms in the valley, this one holds its own. It is most similar to Focus in that it is one large long room with bouldering on one side and ropes on the opposite. It excels in that it has auto belay, top rope, and lead climbing. There is even an adorable section for children with a slide and an interesting moon board in the back. They offer yoga, day camps, and classes as well. There are cubbies for storage, but no lockers. They seem to change the routes at a good pace and it never seems to hot inside even in this Arizona heat. Highly recommend!

Really nice facilities and staff. Good variety of routes, lots of autobelays and top ropes, and a nice kids area. We’re 20 minutes from three climbing gyms, but we will be coming back here.

This rock gym is amazing! I’m still pretty new with rock climbing and it’s easy to feel intimidated — but not here! The staff is SO friendly and welcoming, and are always available to answer any questions and help out any way they can. The routes are fun and challenging, and I get an amazing workout every time. I look forward to the days I get to come climb!

A great modern gym. Spacious, clean, new. Latest and greatest in modern walls. Friendly staff and customers make it a great addition to the north side. Chris did a great job and I look forward to climbing here for years to come.

SO EXCITED!
Cannot wait for the grand opening!
I have always loved rock climbing, and would frequent ape index when I lived in Peoria. I now live in North Phoenix and cannot wait to get back into rock climbing, and being able to bring my daughter with me will be a fun bonding experience and a great workout!
I’m so excited I already bought my membership! 🙌🏼❤️☀️
