This review is going to be long, but if you are considering enrolling your children in the YMCA Summer day camp, please read.
I had 2 children enrolled in this summer camp. I planned the have them enrolled for 7 weeks. I had to remove them after just 8 days of camp.
Everyday they were coming home with stories of being picked on. I assumed that if any incidents occurred that I would be briefed or informed by one of the counselors. I was not.
On their 8th day both my children came home crying. One child pushed mine down to the floor. A few campers threatened to "jump" my child during camp. (Again, I was informed by my children, not the staff). As parents we have to take threats seriously even from other children. I'd rather be safe than sorry. Considering my children were begging not to go back, I had no choice but to remove them.
I will add that every incident that occurred, my children also had to inform the counselors of what had happened. I don't know if they were being properly watched the entire time they were in their care. Having to find out from my child and not the adults in charge was unacceptable.
You are charged slightly ahead of time for each week of camp. I was refunded for the 2 following weeks that I had already paid for. However, considering the anxiety and fear my children experienced in their 8 days here, I feel that I should have been fully refunded for the other 2 weeks as well.
For 8 days of camp for 2 kids I spent $1,200. I was not even offered a partial refund for the 2 days they could not attend in their 2nd week, due to safety concerns. After unenrolling, a refund for future weeks would be standard. It does not take into account that I had to do it for their safety, and it definitely does not rectify the reasons I had to unenroll them.
Additionally, I no longer have childcare for the remaining weeks of summer until school resumes. I am out of a job for that amount of time as well. Which means Im losing thousands of dollars of income, on top of the $1,200 wasted on 8 days here. This experience has significantly impacted our lives financially and mentally. We definitely will not return here, for childcare or otherwise.

Overall, the Downtown YMCA is a solid gym with good facilities and a welcoming atmosphere. The equipment is well-maintained, and the staff are friendly and helpful. Itโs a great place to get a workout in, whether youโre into weightlifting, cardio, or taking advantage of the group fitness classes.
However, one area that could use improvement is the consistency of the operating hours. Currently, the gym is open from 5:30 AM to 9 PM Monday through Thursday, but it closes at 7 PM on Fridays. This inconsistency can be frustrating for members who want to maintain a regular schedule throughout the workweek.
It would be much more convenient if the gym adopted consistent weekday hours โ ideally from 5 AM to 9 PM Monday through Friday. That kind of reliability would go a long way in supporting members with busy or variable schedules.
Despite that, the Downtown YMCA is a great community fitness center, and with a few small changes, it could be even better.

No pool, no steam room, anymore, lights are out in the shower areas with lots of cockroaches, Absolutely trash facilities not from this century, I have been a member since I was child since 2002, started to notice that there where 0 updates around 2017i cancelled my membership and havenโt been back till 2025 and I was thoroughly disappointed.

Disappointed with this facility. I help drop off our friendโs child every day to YMCA child care. Yesterday after dropping off, my three year old needed to use the restroom, but upon asking we were told he wasnโt allowed to go to the bathroom. I was genuinely surprised at the lack of empathy for a 3 year old that really needed to go to the bathroom.

I absolutely love the YMCA. This particular branch has incredible staff members. The before and after school program has been amazing for my family. My kids are happy and have great relationships with the staff.
The gym is older, but it has everything you need and a bit more. It is clean and well maintained. The overall community is supportive and inclusive.
I highly recommend becoming a member. It is evident that this branch works hard to build community, and I love being a part of that.

I donโt normally leave reviews but the YMCA has been everything Iโve wanted and more. Staff is kind and treats people with respect. The facilities are fantastic. The basketball court and gym have an old school feel to them and still have all the necessary equipment. Iโm truly happy that Iโve been able to come and work out and be a small part of this place.

Hey man, this is a YMCA in the middle of downtown. It's not the nicest, newest, or cleanest. But honestly if that gym in the basement doesn't fire you up for a workout, I don't know what will. 10/10 old school vibes. Doesn't have every piece of equipment you've seen in nicer gyms, but it's got everything you'd need for a full workout of any body area. Again, it shows its age but I don't see that as a bad thing. The place is well used and well loved. And actually affordable for a gym downtown

I love the positive energy of the people which spills out into the place as well. Every member of the staff is courteous, helpful and always has a positive attitude. The pre-school staff with whom I interact the most are soo good with the little ones, and with the parents as well! Thank you for caring for our young ones, teaching them and being patient with them.

Clean the jointโฆ workers just stand there doing nothing. When my manโs with the black hair is there they are on point besides that they slack. Start with taking the trash out/ basic cleaning. And get the steam room going if u canโt afford that then just sell the gym to someone who will us it the right way. Also this gym only has dumbbells for free weights and they are so old I barely trust some of them.

I appreciate the entire team for making me feel like I am worth being alive, before I was in the program my lifestyle was at a breaking point. I didn't know how to help myself or even care to ask anyone because I figured I could solve all my problems on my own. My case manager is understanding and helpful with work opportunities and upcoming events that make me feel included and important. I was experiencing health complications from not eating, being hydrated enough and having a bed to get rest on. If it wasn't for me being selected into this amazing opportunity to get back on my feet, I don't know where my life would've gone or ended up.

It used to be a good place before covid, but the upkeep has severely degraded over the last few years. The boiler that heats the shower water breaks frequently, and it takes them 3-5 days to fix it on average. YMCA members used to get access to the ASU side, but that no longer exists. The pool and hottub downstairs have been out of service for years. The steam room never works. Towel service discontinued during covid but never restarted after covid ended. In summary, the YMCA isn't worth the price anymore.

I walked in optimistically looking to fulfill a school paper on an organization, regarding their practices in inclusivity, and accessibility. The roadside entrance was locked, and the handicapped button did nothing. Upon entering the backside of the building, I noticed the main entrance was boarded up, and an alternative side entrance was opened. I walked up to the counter, and politely asked about conducting a small questionnaire regarding the organizations efforts and policies towards inclusiveness in the community. I was glared down by Alyssa G, and told in a very short curt manner, that there was no one available to answer my questions. I further explained that it was for one of my classes at ASU, and I was just curious about YMCA's approach to making their facilities more inclusive to people with disabilities. Once agai, Alyssa G. was very short with me, and said there was nobody that could help me, and she was defiant about connecting me with someone who could answer my questions. I did end up with a few answers:
1. If you're thinking of visiting this establishment, just know, they're not wholly inclusive, and Alyssa G. is NOT polite (would recommend, they place her in more of an office role, cause face-to-face interactions are not her strong suite)
2. The building has some weaknesses in accessibility for disabled individuals, like no street access, and handicapped door button seems a bit high to access from a wheelchair, assuming they ever unlock that entrance.

It's outdated but it's not as busy as other gyms in downtown and that's why I like it. I rarely go there and find the equipment that I wanna use occupied.
If, however, a men-only gym opens up in downtown, I'll leave this gym in a heartbeat.

I've been a long-time "Y" member and have seen this location go through a lot of changes, but I love that they have always kept the basement gym in tact (aka...the Dungeon). The cardio machines on the main floor are well maintained and the heavy weights in the basement keep getting heavier (for some reason)! The staff are first class people who have always been helpful to me and are usually very happy to greet guests.

I love the Y. Been a member for 20 years, but if you want to be safe from Covid do not go there. People are wearing masks on their chins, mouth and nose exposed, no one disinfecting equipment, no staff supervision. I reported someone not wearing a mask, and after they were told to wear it, they just wore it on their chin. Next day two people with masks on chins, nose and mouth exposed. So the rules for masks and disinfecting are in place but there is no supervision or enforcement. If you are worried about Covid you should probably stay away.

The staff will ignore you if they find out you are an ASU student. The partnership seems to be a joke. Thankfully, I don't enjoy working out on the YMCA side so I avoid them. The equipment is old and outdated. The building itself needs to be updated. It's hard for me to write this review because I used to enjoy the fitness classes (especially yoga) very much years ago as an undergraduate student.

I will tell you something. There is a shortage of old, cool, hip looking buildings in Phoenix. At the Lincoln Family Downtown YMCA you will get to experience a real cool, old hip looking building. Signed my daughter up for swim lessons last year and everyone and everything was very unorganized. Instructors were always late or sometimes they didnโt even know who was going to be teaching the class for the day. I thought that all of that chaos of the program was going to be a one time thing so I went ahead and gave it a second try and signed up my daughter for swim lessons again. Her first class started on a Monday at 10am and I was notified 40 minutes before class was suppose to start that it had been canceled (I was already there so I had to go back home) second day we show up right on time and again NO ONE seems to know what is going on. I finally get walked back up to the front desk where they tell me that class has been canceled AGAIN. I had to leave my name and number so that they could get back to me to see what will be happening with the program. I drove down there twice for nothing. I recommend for them not to advertise these classes online for specific dates until they know for sure who is going to be teaching them. Extremely unprofessional and a waste of time for my daughter and I.

The ASU side might be nice but the older side is a dump and in need of repair. Even if you tell management about things that are broken it's a very slow process..even safety concerns in the men's locker room.. and then to make it worse s day pass is now $15, I wouldn't mind paying that if the place was clean and nice.

Great location for a YMCA. Plenty of parking (although you'll need a parking permit, see the front desk) the pool is closed on Sunday but it's nice and deep for diving. Any member of this Y has access to the ASU weights and basketball courts. Steam room and sauna for post workouts. A great hub for running downtown Phoenix.

I couldn't believe that for a big city like Phoenix you get a four lane pool in what looks like a small, cramped hallway! The facilities are small and the variety of classes are extremely limited. We are currently struggling financially and applied for a scholarship. We were seen right away and "approved" for a discounted family membership at $57 a month!! Back in Wisconsin, we paid $72 without a discount, we had a full course catalog that offered extensive classes all day and all night long. We had a huge pool with 10 lanes and a diving board, as well as a smaller warm water pool for smaller children to play in. Our facility in a small town was five times the size of that here in Phoenix. When we went to the pool to swim we couldn't even get in because all 4 lanes were taken. So if you're going for the indoor pool, don't waste your time. For $57 a month as a low income family, this was highway robbery and a complete scam. We immediately canceled our membership on the day we enrolled, but have yet to get our money back, which we paid in cash. As for the other YMCAs in the area, apparently they are just as small and limited in classes. Scottsdale pool is closed and Christown only has an outdoor pool. What a shame...

DONT LET SOME OF THE REVIEWS FOOL YOU!
1. The rooftop pool is for ASU students ONLY. You need a special key card to get in.
2. There isn't "enough" room to workout. Room to actually just stretch.
3. YMCA pool is dangerous. Dont let your child run in because boom, they are already in 9ft of water. Their is no edge around the pool. Literally as soon as holly walk in, the water is right there and I'll be so scared to bring my child with me.
4. This place is not clean. Nothing but outdated.
5. I was reading some of the reviews and it sounds like they force people to say certain things, because trust me, it is nothing special here.
6. Yes they have a sauna. But you cant even change the setting because the knob is broken. Everything is here is a freaking joke.
Original review:
The staff is friendly and I personally liked going to the YMCA side vs the Sun Devil fitness center. However, they have no digital scales available to the public. We have to use a manual balance that I'm sure no one knows how to use.
Their cardio equpiment is mostly new, but their weight equipment is not. Some of the machines have freaking duct tape on them. Some of their machines are outdated. The building is old and lowkey creepy. I went their basketball court and was scared. They need to remodel. People live upstairs and they have a little yard to hang out in. All they do is smoke and smoke. Walking to the gym and inhaling all that smoke is ridiculous. The staff are okay. I'm a student, so I enter thru the Sun Devil Fitness side, therefore, I dont really interact with the staff there. But from what I can tell, they are nice. I like them better than the staff at the sun devil fitness center. I dont see myself getting a membership with them at all. I really miss my YMCA back in Chandler. I personally just wished it was more clean, and they werent so selfish with their digital scale. And I love how many Sun devil photos they have posted. They dont want to show outdated equpiment. Honestly, if you want to use duct taped equipment, have residents everywhere, no access to a freaking digital scale, this is the place for you. I only attend because it's free, other than that, you will not catch me spending a dime here for this old, creepy, scary place called a gym. You are mostly spending your money to go to Sun devil side.

This location is very nice; however, my 14 year old son and I were hoping for a big outdoor pool like many of the YMCA locations in Las Vegas have. It appears they have a lit of room to add a nice big pool (of course I say this not knowing the legalities), but it would make this location 5 Stars!

I stayed at the Y for quite a while. The rooms were clean, it was affordable, and i felt very safe. As for the staff, they were not half as bad as what was mentioned below. The were very very professional and welcoming. The management ( I wont name any one specific because that in itself is childish and unprofessional) was very capable annd addressed any issues i had in a timley manner. I always felt that they upheld the highest of christian virtues and really cared about me. I would not hesitate to stay at the Y again if I ever needed to.

I relocated from out of state to attend school and since they don't provide housing. I happened to stumble upon the ymca. At first I thought it was great, good central location, close to my school, and the facilities. Well the staff are rude, I addressed my issues with Joe Guiterrez one of the head staff, and it seemed to just make things worse. The staff became even more rude, I didn't want anything special I just wanted to be treated like all the other people who walk through the lobby to workout. They are rude and I have never felt so disrespected in my life. I see in his review that he tries to make the place sound like its your average place. Well the place is full of people with mental issues and come to find out some guy was high out of his mind and pointed a gun at Joe.google it, lets not forget about the guy who was living at the Y and was going out and doing home invasions, and killed a guy, and was arrested at the Y also I highly doubt that the pedophiles who live there are the ones who need to register, but the fact that the children's play area is right next to the outdoor area for the hotel so all the freaks can oogle at the little children. These things didn't bother me. The thing that bothered me is the fact that I worked hard for my money and saved it, so I could put my complete focus on my schooling. And here I am giving these staff my hard earned and saved money, and they make you feel low. So low that I did't even feel comfortable going to the other side to work out, The one Anna just sits around when the big wigs are gone and texts. I don't care if even a penny goes to one of them and the rest other things. A penny is too much for me, and I will not perpetuate the perversity with my hard earned money. They should be trying keep the people who would help them clean up their image. not chase them off.
