The staff here is amazing. The climbing is great and some of the courses are changed out weekly which always keeps things new. The whole climbing community is welcoming and helpful regardless of your skill level. Our whole family of varying ages and abilities loves climbing at The Bloc!

Friend was in town and we decided to try rock climbing for the first time. Instruction was clear and staff was friendly. Equipment was also well taken care of and facility was clean. The place isn't large, but definitely puts in a workout and there were also children climbing, so there are a few beginner friendly spots! Definitely worth a try and they also have pass deals if you end up enjoying and want to climb regularly!

We really love coming here - the staff are friendly 100% of the time. Other climbers here are friendly and helpful, climbing culture is very inclusive. We will absolutely keep coming! The white van out front however casts a glare into the building and never fails to sear my eyes which does have a bit of an adverse impact on my climbing - maybe the owner of the van can park somewhere else or somehow shade the glare (sorry to be nitpicky). But, we will keep coming back!

UPDATE:
I wanted to update my review to reflect that management reached out promptly after I shared my experience. They were very professional and acknowledged that the dismissive interaction I had with the staff member is not how they expect employees to treat customers. I appreciate them taking this seriously and addressing it with the employee.
They also clarified that the treadmill has been intermittently malfunctioning and that they were hoping to repair it rather than replace it outright. Management mentioned they would bring up the idea of adding a sign with troubleshooting steps to help members in the meantime.
Overall, I still really like this gym and think it has a great community and usually very friendly staff. Itโs clear that management cares about feedback and is willing to improve communication and maintenance. Thank you for taking the time to respond thoughtfully.
Initial Review:
I really like this gym overall and think it has a great community. All the staff are usually very friendly, so I was surprised by this particular staff memberโs response. One of the treadmills often doesnโt work, and when I asked about it near closing time while the other treadmill was already in use, I was told, โYeah, it just does that.โ I ask him if there is a way to troubleshoot it and he just kept saying it does that and management knows. Later, I figured out you can actually reset it by unplugging it and turning it back on. When I mentioned this, I wasnโt trying to argue but just let him know so he could pass it on to other members. He wasnโt rude, but he kept saying the same thing over again that management knows and it just does that. He was dismissive about me making a suggestion that would help other members. I was surprised by his reaction, but maybe he was just frustrated? Regardless it is not an excuse to be dismissive. It would help to have a sign explaining how to troubleshoot it, or better yet, be proactive and replace it since people are paying to use equipment that works. Clearer communication and maintenance would go a long way.

I really enjoy climbing at the Bloc, there are many amenities that make the membership very worthwhile. There is always a wide variety of routes and problems that make my travel across town worthwhile. The skill routes are great for a new climber like me to learn proper technique! The employees are very approachable, helpful and polite, and make the Bloc a very nice environment to learn in.

Took my oldest here this weekend and had to give Alex a shout-out for the above and beyond intro he gave us. His energy and enthusiasm were Blippi-level engaging for my shy-ish 5 year old and his patience while she got the safety mechanics down was unmatched. We'll definitely be back ๐ง๐ผโโ๏ธ

Went on a guide climb in mount Lemmon with this climbing gym. It was definitely hard and not for the faint of heart. But a ton of fun if you like rock climbing and want to try taking it outside of the gym!! Definitely recommend giving this gym a try as they have great employees and the guide climb was a lot of fun

The gym is an awesome bouldering gym. They have a lot of types of options for bouldering with different skill levels and hold types. The route setting is fun and changes regularly. There is also an auto belay section. There is a yoga studio upstairs with yoga for members weekly. There is plenty of locker space. Their website is confusing to navigate, but overall a good experience.

Edit: the owner emailed me, arguing with me and telling me I'm wrong. Apparently agreeing that rates are subject to change in the terms & conditions is equal to changing the price without notice. It felt hostile and made me feel super uncomfortable.
They just raised the price for monthly fees without even warning me. I just saw an increase on my credit card bill. That feels sneaky and not very honest.
I like the upstairs gym but I wish it had better lighting. I feel like I'm working out in a cave.
I really like the auto belays, but routes stay up for 2 to 3 months before being changed. Kind of frustrating as a climber, because it gets boring. They're also constantly covered in chalk and it feels like the auto belay routes are really just an after-thought to the bouldering area. I am really impressed with how much technique they're able to get in in only 30 feet or so of space. Awesome!
I like the yoga classes offered but I wish they were later. I also wish they were open later on the weekends. I'd really like to climb after 7 pm.

this place rocks. The setting is fun and varied. The routes felt creative, and I appreciated that they made the effort to set interesting routes at lower grades- something that many gyms seem to overlook. My one complaint is that I wished there were more hard slab climbs.
There are also lots of other perks like yoga, and a gym upstairs.

They do NOT have kids' climbing on the weekend!! โThere are a few articles out there saying they do. Strangely, even though they said they were frustrated by not being able to take those articles down, they haven't chosen to say that explicitly on their site. They insisted that simply not referring to kids climbing at all should have alerted me that they do not have it. ๐ I did call ahead to check, but I'd already promised my young daughter that we'd go climbing, so we thought we'd check it out anyway.
โI know that a lot of people do not like small kids in their gyms, and I respect that, so I brought her right when they opened on a weekend. They have an extremely expensive day rate ($30/apiece, we ended up staying less than two hours because kids) and auto belay ropes aren't a good way for kids to learn because they just jump off and bump down the wall. So there were about four routes she could actually use. It's a bouldering gym, so that's fair, and it's not a very big place. Also I see from other reviews that maybe the $30 was a one-time orientation fee.
My old gym was so welcoming to kids-people loved to see little ones with their insane muscle-to-mass ratio learning to love this sport. This is not the place for that. Again, that's fair, just know before you go.
Some cool looking walls if you like bouldering but not a good place for families.
2.5 stars for decent routes and some interesting features but communication about kids could be so much clearer with a few additions to the website.
Edited to add: the defensiveness from your company is kind of funny when you've basically corroborated my review! If you Google "rock climbing for kids in Tucson" the outdated article is the first hit. A Yelp review from 2019 also mentioned kids climbing on Sundays. It is "reasonable to assume" that some things paused during COVID might have been resurrected.
I did my due diligence by calling ahead, but staff at the desk said that they have people come in frequently expecting this kids program. A simple announcement on the website "we are not offering weekend kids climb at this time but you're welcome to come in blah blah" would be so simple!
Bouldering and auto belay just isn't a safe or fun way for young kids to learn and I stand by my review for other families with YOUNG kids. Maybe I'm doing you a favor so you won't get the little ones at this location! We will still check out Rocks and Ropes; just chill out a little ๐.

Pricing on this gym is pretty outrageous. It was $30 for a day pass. The quality of the gym was pretty subpar , didn't feel like any of the holds had been cleaned in a long time. Setting was fine and the grades were pretty all over the place. I would value the experience at around $8 for a day pass.
Edit: I see the owners responding saying that their "orientation fee" is justifiable. That means I spent $10(?) for the staff member to talk to me for 1 to 2 minutes about how to fall off the wall. That is absolutely not worth $10. Seems like a quick cash grab on new climbers to the gym. You should be ashamed for charging people that much. Changing my review from a 2 to 1 for that
Edit: I am seeing the owner is mad because people agree with me. Why don't you fix your terrible gym instead of worrying about me, pal

I have now been to this gym several times for competitions and now finally for myself to climb with my assistant coach. I felt the climbing grades may have been a little soft however, that makes the gym a great entry level gym and gym to start training at. Spacing for the gym was very large which made it feel great the auto belay walls did not make much sense to me however, same height as the Boulder walls I felt it could of been nice to just make them Boulder walls instead and continue the Mat and stuck with the trend of bouldering good quality problems for what was offered though.

Took a class on anchors for sport climbing today. It included lots of good information about bolts and hangers, what they're made of, and how to inspect them. Second half of the class was hands on. We practiced setting up an anchor for lowering off of and also worked on cleaning a route and being lowered or switching over to a rappel. I would highly recommend this class to anyone planning on climbing sport routes. This knowledge can help to keep everyone at least bit safer overall.

I don't get the negative reviews of BLOC. This place is nothing short of well worth the price of admission. The staff is knowledgable and helpful. The patrons are friendly to newcomers and novices who may have 0 to little experience with the sport. Further, the facility is well maintained, clean, and has excellent ventilation.
If you are ONLY looking for a gym with equipment there might be some options in town that are cheaper but if using EFT (electronic funds transfer) the rates are good with the benefit of actually doing something fun besides working on equipment and free weights. Good selection of routes with various ratings that are changed frequently. Chances are you will find some bouldering problems that are changed before you are able to solve them.

It was fun, but the auto-belays were super short (which I get, it is a short building). The bouldering part was pretty good. I recommend going to Rocks & Ropes more because it is a larger building with more places to climb. The bouldering part is slightly smaller, but still.

Great facility, poorly run business. Would not survive if there was competition in town. I bring my 8 year old here often and would like to climb with him.
However, for a monthly membership they insist on charging him the adult price, not the childrenโs price because โthatโs what the computer makes us doโ.
Thus we are not becoming members of a business that doesnโt at least try to accommodate customers.

Dishonest. If you call and ask how much it costs for a drop in, they'll tell you $12 or something. But in reality they charge you another fee for a required "orientation", like you need to be taught how to bolder or something lol.
Avoid like the plague, same with the "rocks and ropes" place, same terrible ownership and orientation fee.

The Facility was clean and the staff helpful. The routes were good, but there were not a whole lot set when we went in. Also, this place charges for an orientation to boulder. Worst climbing gym experience I've ever had. Called and asked Kyle about the day passes, I was told it was $13.00 for the day. When I arrived they wanted to charge $13.00 for a day pass plus $12.00 for a orientation fee to the gym. $25.00 day pass for a bouldering gym is insane! Manager and staff were very rude and bashed other gyms saying " They incorporate the orientation fee into the price over time, we just charge you the entire price up front." I'm really surprised this place is still in business. Don't waste your time or money here!
