I’ve been coming to this 24 Hour Fitness for years, and it really needs some attention. The gym is often dirty, and paper towel dispensers are usually empty in the busiest areas. Staff are frequently on their phones and rarely greet members, which sets a poor tone. The equipment hasn’t been updated in years and feels dated, while other locations across the brand are showing wear too. It feels like 24 Hour Fitness has lost the spark it once had. I recently joined EOS Fitness and the difference is clear, friendly staff, spotless facility, and tons of modern machines. Unless things improve here, I’ll likely cancel my 24 membership.

Scam Artists at 24 Hour Fitness – 3633 Avocado Blvd, La Mesa, CA 91941 (Trainer Misael & Manager Erica Are the Worst!)

If I could give ZERO stars, I would. The 24 Hour Fitness at 3633 Avocado Blvd, La Mesa, CA 91941 is run by nothing but liars, scammers, and thieves. They robbed me of $641.04 that I never authorized, and the way they did it is beyond dirty.

Here’s the story: my wife went in to buy what was supposed to be a one-time 8-session training package. She paid for it in full, thinking that was the end of it. But no — these crooks weren’t satisfied. Out of nowhere, they charged my card again for another $641.04 without my permission.

When I confronted them, they tried to hide behind some nonsense about a “contract.” Let me be very clear: no contract was ever signed by me or my wife. What actually happened is their trainer Misael tricked her. He rushed her through a screen during payment, told her to just click, and buried a fake “contract” in there without giving her any paperwork, explanation, or chance to read. No contract copy, no signature, nothing — just a digital trap. That is fraud, plain and simple.

And when I went back to demand answers, Manager Erica showed her true colors. Instead of fixing the mistake, she doubled down and defended the scam. She told us “you signed, it’s a contract,” as if that excused stealing money from our account. A real manager would’ve refunded the charge and admitted the mistake. But Erica? She enabled it, supported Misael’s shady tactics, and basically told us we were stuck. That makes her just as guilty.

So let me spell it out:
• Trainer Misael = scammer who tricks people into contracts.
• Manager Erica = enabler who refuses to fix fraudulent charges.
• 24 Hour Fitness La Mesa (3633 Avocado Blvd) = a scam operation pretending to be a gym.

This is not a fitness center. It’s a trap. They lure you in with friendly smiles, then drain your account with unauthorized charges, fake contracts, and zero accountability. They hide behind lies, refuse to provide paperwork, and act like you’re the problem when you catch them stealing.

I will never set foot in this place again, and I will warn everyone I know to stay away. There are plenty of honest gyms out there. This is NOT one of them.

This gym is beyond unacceptable in terms of cleanliness and maintenance. The sauna is absolutely filthy—it looks like it hasn’t been cleaned in years. There’s visible dirt, grime, and hair buildup between the wood panels, and the sidewalls are caked in what looks like years of neglect.
The gym itself is rundown. Machines are constantly broken, and basic necessities like paper towel dispensers are often empty or broken. One of the most shocking things is the women’s bathroom, where a trashcan is literally being used to catch a leak from the ceiling. That’s not just unprofessional—it’s unsanitary.
This facility clearly doesn’t meet the standards you’d expect from a national fitness chain. If management is reading this, I hope this serves as a wake-up call to address these ongoing issues. I wouldn’t recommend this gym to anyone.

Came with my partner on a Sunday night about an hour before closing (7:55, close at 9). The front area where you check in was already dark, lights in the front section already off. Walking up, we had to double check the rest of the gym was lit and we could see people inside so we went in after checking the hours again. The guy working the front desk barely glanced up from his phone, didn't greet us, and glared. This didn't feel safe or welcoming. I understand wanting to get out on time, but when I'm paying to be a member of a club, I expect the same standards for each location.

Problems continued into the locker areas (dirty, overflowing trash, aggressive signage) and the sauna. The sauna is so far overdue for a remodel, it's painful. The stench was overwhelming - and it was not from a singular individual, it persists the entire time and can be smelled before even opening the door. The walls are absolutely stained black from the residue of people sweating and rubbing against. Just... not pleasant at all. Maybe it's better during the day, but I'm not really willing to give it another try when there's better quality available.

Worst gym I’ve ever been to in my life! I’ve seen third world gyms cleaner, friendlier, and less banged up than this gym. First of all it looked like nobody cleaned in a decade, the bathrooms REEKED of urine, horrible leak and slip hazard in the bathroom too (check pictures attached) I wouldn’t come back even if they payed me. And a quick tip to the performative male at the front desk. If you don’t like or even want to do your job Oh I don’t know, DONT work there? I have been a member for 3 years and in those 3 years nothing has improved. It’s unfortunate because the staff is great, people are great but this has to be the dirtiest gym I’ve ever been too. I travel for work weekly and have the opportunity to visit many gyms and this Rancho SD location had to be the worst. There is always broken equipment for days at a time. The woman restroom has had a ceiling leak for months. There was broken glass mirrors for months before it was repaired. What had to happen to get this gym up to standards? Get some new equipment, deep clean the space ?
If things are not corrected in a few months I will not renew my membership with 24.

They don't keeo up on maintenance and have had the hand dryers in the bathroom broken for months. It's starting to not feel safe to use the machines. For the positive, the GX instructors and personal trainers are good to excellent. Denise and Jason deserve a shoutout for quality. As to the gym itself, it’s filthy. The GX equipment is appalling. The weights are cracked and have cut people because of the broken plastic. I’m surprised the company isn’t on top of this since defective equipment is a legal liability. Signing a waiver does not prevent a company from being sued for negligence. The balls are flat and when I suggested that someone blow them up once a week I was told they don’t have enough staff for that. One of the ceiling tiles dislodged during an earthquake last month and could easily fall on someone. There is also water damage in the weight room that could lead to mold. If it weren’t for the previously mentioned trainers I wouldn’t set foot in this gym.

I've been a member there for 20 years. I don't think it's a secret that this is about the lowest end gym you can go to. They basically put nothing in new over the 20 years. But that is what it is. My two star review is only about the unsanitary cleanliness issues at the gym. For the last two years, it's like there's almost nobody cleaning. Between the machines you could grab a fistful of hair ,the walls are black from hand marks. I actually be afraid to touch anything after going to this gym. Showed manager pictures where machines are not getting cleaned, was told he would bring it up with nightly cleaning crew. Two weeks later same thing brought up to manager again same thing, then another two weeks later same thing. To this day still hasn’t changed. Then manager places that on his door, love that the gym is this close and like the people and the amenities but if you can’t clear dust off a machine and it’s not getting cleaned. Additionally gym is showing its age, torn covers in benches everywhere and machines which harbors bacteria, last time I was there three of the four hand dryers were broken. When membership expires changing gyms unless drastic changes. Right now would not recommend.

I’ve always had great experiences with the staff here, but unfortunately, one bad interaction can change everything. Today, my cousin was denied entry despite my having a buddy pass, simply because he didn’t have his ID on him. Instead of finding a reasonable solution, we were forced to either call his parents to come down or leave altogether. It was an incredibly frustrating and disappointing experience, especially after paying extra. This kind of rigid and unaccommodating policy takes away from what should have been an enjoyable time.

I considered an annual membership with training. The trainer that I met with once injured my shoulder. I explained this to the general manager, Erica. She sent me a text inviting me to come back. I said "No". I canceled my membership and two more trainers called me. I continued to say, "No". Since then, they have charged my credit card nearly $800.00 WITHOUT MY CONSENT! I was one of the “new years resolution” people in Jan 2024, this gym is great, the GM is super friendly (used to work for a hotel as GM) and it’s one of the cleaner 24’s (yes some areas could be better, but it’s a big facility) I feel like they are quick to fix things that break!

Wow... should've checked the reviews about this location before hand. First and last time visiting this location. I tried this location because it's a little closer to my house than the one I normally go to. Did my work put, got my sauna time in. Cool.
I'm unwinding in the locker room before I go in the shower. Little did I know that, even though it's a "24hr Fitness" they close at 10pm. I'm rushing through my shower and get out right at 10. There are a lot of neg reviews, but if it's so bad, why are there so many regulars here — every day? So many cardio users? So many class guests? So many people using weights and machines? So many people who love the pool. It must not be too bad!

This 24 Hour Fitness location offers a huge number of cardio machines downstairs and a complete resistance/weight room upstairs. Check Google Maps for busy times! Most times of the day are just great and it's easy to get in, DO THE WORK, and get out.

You'll enjoy a no-extra-charge Olympic lap pool, large hot tub, dry sauna, steam room, and group exercise room. Pay a little extra for drinks, snacks and accessories from the pro shop.

Parking is easy, and part of a huge shopping center lot. Downstairs, there's music playing overhead, but you can use your headphones to watch a variety of 8 TV channels including Fox News, CNN, ESPN, and more.

There are a wide variety of customers here from obese to athlete... So no matter your goals, you'll fit in.

A quick note of THANKS to the staff for always vacuuming around the club, and frequently mopping the locker room floors, steam room floor, etc.

It’s a decent 24hr fitness. Despite some reviews it’s actually cleaner than some other clubs *cough “College Grove”*.
It seems to serve the local community quite well ( older folks)
It’s busiest times are 8-11am and 4-7pm M-F, Saturdays are wildcards and Sunday’s are when it’s mostly empty

Here goes my review from being a 5 year customer working out at 24 hour fitness in horrible rancho San Diego. First off beware of the people who work behind the front desk. Especially Stacey and that rude district manager Ericka. I wanna let you guys know they profile and are racist towards middle eastern and black people. An altercation has occurred where I have been followed/harassed by fitness members and have filed complaints multiple times relating to these incidents. They have not even taken a look or even viewed my reports. Today I received an email stating my membership has been revoked for 3 years due to my "behavior". Let's talk about behavior. When I called on the phone to figure out why they did that the front desk receptionist cussed me out on the phone and hung up in my face the dike with the blue eyes. Then the district manager began to call me to explain the issue of what went down and began to curse and use racial slurs on the phone towards me. I'm beyond frustrated and will be having a legal team reaching out to you guys. This place is a scam and if you're not known by the employees or managers beware because they will treat you with disrespect. In all everything was recorded with altercations inside the gym. I recommend no one to use this gym and BEWARE!!!!

In my opinion the negative reviews on here are beyond funny. It's one of the cleanest 24 hours in San Diego. Yes, the majority of the people that come here are older, which means they are respectful, they don't feel like the world owes them something, the weights get put where they belong, and they aren't using 4 sets of dumbbells at once.

If you want to be around entitled, egotistical," fitness influencers" to make your self feel like you belong then this is not the gym for you.

It’s crazy how one employee can ruin your experience, and make you question your safety. I have been going to this gym for 8 months now and have never had a problem with any other employee, yet continuously received disrespect and judgement from one. She refused to give her name out, but she has a pixie cut, black hair, blue eyes, mid 50-60s in age. From the moment I walked in the gym for the first time I have experienced nothing but attitude and judgement from her, which shows a lot for a “judgement free”zone. I’ve tried politely asking for equipment and have been yelled at in return. I’m always questioned for my id and age even though I come everyday. I feel as if it even has to do with my ethnicity that she acts the way she does towards me. I should not be paying 300 dollars a YEAR to be treated with this disrespect. Family and friends have also had terrible experiences with her, she should be taken into accountability before others continue to go through this experience. I no longer feel safe in that gym.

2 floors and some open equipment even at 5:30pm. Unfortunately, there are usually a few “out of order” signs on equipment. I also haven’t seen a punching bag here which would be nice to have access to.

Trash gym, trash management, trash hours, and machines are always broke. This used to be one of the best gyms turned into worst. Gym is always busy but they keep cutting the hours down. Half of the treadmill machines don't work. Management (Stacy)is probably the worst manager I've seen. Been a member at this gym for 15 years. These machines plus more have been out for 6 months. I was told not to "slam the weights" today by an employee. I would have appreciated it if it was in a professional manner, but the employee was already walking away when I tried to clarify what I did; I said "I didn't know I was" and they said "well, you were" with their back turned. I didn't know removing the BUMPER plates and throwing them onto the BUMPER mats from less than 1 foot height was slamming. If you really want to regulate slamming weights, you should have employees monitor the 2nd floor and not just sit in their computer desk while the front desk isn't being supervised, not the OLYMPIC LIFTING SECTION that has plates built to be THROWN around.

Anybody thinks that their weekend hours are horrible? keep getting people confused for Sat and Sun closing at 8pm and frustrated when they show up only finding out that the hours are weird?

And when I asked the front desk, the told the cooperation decided the hours, not them. I told them I would start a social champion to voice my dissatisfaction, and I was suddenly told to wait, and 20 seconds later, the manger came out to talk to me. A member told me they used to have longer hours before covid.

If you want better hours for the club, please voice your concerns as well we can make changes that benefit the member, but also increase club's satisfaction.

I will delete this post when longer hours are implmented.

It is older, but I’ve grown to like it. I live close so it’s my first choice. They need to extend the hours at least until midnight; preferably 24 hours. They close way too early. Especially on the weekends. 8 and 9 pm… is too early to close. I will likely be canceling my membership. Their closing hours are just too early. I tried to make it work but the hours are frustrating.

No service. Black mold in showers everywhere. Walking in 9/10 times the desk is on their phone scrolling, not even an effort to greet or say "have a great workout".
Just trash management and reflects in staff.
Not to mention they deceive with their brand, they're not 24 hour fitness for years. Soooooo sad. Their only market advantage is their competitive price. That's it.

Extend the hours back to your business name, absolutely no capacity for peak hours. Reverting back to 24hrs could accommodate that. Add an additional 20-30 minutes for your workout or be willing to switch it up, because it’s a guarantee you’ll be waiting.

Way too small for the operating hours. People are crammed in there at night (when a lot of people who work during they day workout) it’s hard to move, you’re waiting a long time for equipment. I want to love this place amenities of the amenities but can’t enjoy them due to the operating hours. They did extend the time for Mon -Thur to 10pm, which is a little better, but I’d love to see it open until at least midnight if not 24 hours.

24 Hour Fitness has been perfect for myself and the staff at LowStar GPS an affiliate of UPCO, Inc. If there were to be one thing that needs improvement that would be the requirement of breath mints or mouthwash to be used by the members who engage in hard breathing exercise. Some of the orders that certain member share with others would make a barnyard smell like a flower garden.

Average gym but below average cleanliness. My main concerns are that the equipment is always breaking down. You come one day and there is like 3-4 treadmills down or some of the weight machines are being repaired up stairs.

There is a pool, sauna, steam room, and a lot space to feel comfortable when working out but the equipment is looking really dated.

If you come at peak time around 430-7 you're going to have a tough time finding somewhere for you to workout.

Have been going for well over 4 years now back 2 back,but this is mainly for covid related review,but overall its a nice place and shopping center has alot of stuff in food,grocery or pharmaceutical needs/vitamins literally walking distance,saunas and pool open again and only real complaint is that hours limited with closing usually at 9pm but that was during the bankruptcy restructuring.

The gal at the front desk told me that a mask is mandatory to be in this gym. As I looked around I literally didn’t see a single person working out with a mask on!
Either she was discriminating against me or they only require people to have a mask on to come in and later take it off. If it’s the latter, that would be insanity, concerning the deadliest virus in the history of mankind. Obviously I won’t go back to this gym, but I’m glad to know that there are gyms that use common sense and only recommend the use of a mask.
This is still America and unless you are a licensed physician, it is illegal to give medical advice (aka telling people to put a mask on), and can be punishable by law.

I got yelled at while at this gym because I was using too much disinfectant on a piece of paper towel.

I called to try and cancel my membership and the manager said overly dramatically as if to incite others I was threatening her. She then threatened to call San Diego sheriff if I wasn't "nice". As a person of color I can't risk altercation with misinformed or coerced police. When you call the corporate office it just hangs up on you. 24hr used to be great but they have changed dramatically.

Great gym closer to my home. Has plenty of space for cardio, free weights benches are a bit limited but manageable not unreasonable.

I always like this gym. I can’t wait till they’re back to 24 hours so I can workout after work like I like to. I feel like it helps take away the stress. For now, I’ll go before work, which kind of takes away yesterday’s stress and puts me in a good mood before work so less stress sticks but the after is important too! This location is discriminatory and is dishonest. They seemingly procured a no fencing policy months after I have been regularly going there to train in saber fencing. Their argument was that the saber could be used as a weapon and I was thinking that a 5 LBS weight can be used as a much more deadly weapon. I sense potential racism from the staff.

When I signed up I told the sales guy what my training intentions were and I had received no objections about the fencing saber (Sales annoyance - he omitted the extra fee and referred to a subtly places printed label on his keyboard to close the sale; If they can't fully disclose pricing then it's essentially a contract scam)

I also have been bringing and training in saber fencing for MONTHS ( I go into a room and train independently and respectfully, considering the other gym attendees' personal space ) then all of a sudden one night I go in and there is the attendant who starts to yell "H-H-Hey this is the guy" (to the manager) as if I committed murder or something 😂

Don't go here if you do anything remotely interesting with your life 😊

So far our experience has been okay. The only reason we signed up was because my work has a partner ship and offers a small amount less a month. I was never informed of the annual fee and received charges in my account with no explanation. When I called they just told me that someone should have reviewed it with me. So not super happy about it, but I’m in a year contract so I have to stay. Their costumer service is not great.

Been going to this gym for awhile and the sales rep I dealt with was trying to push plans I didnt ask for and charge me double the price I usually pay. On top of that I wanted to add my brother to my plan and the sales rep informed me it would cost me 45 dollars more a month, my current rate is 25 a month. What I have learned is not to deal with the sales reps here at all and to just buy a Costco membership alot easier and avoids the hassle of talking to the rude rep.
