I come here for the classes, like Body Pump, which are great. But the equipment is more beat up than ever, everything is falling apart in this gym. Machines, weights - everything looks like it's been mauled by a dinosaur. They need to replace pretty much everything.

I visited 24 Hour Fitness on Thanksgiving morning using a 3-day pass after my regular gym (Planet Fitness) was closed. I was a member here years ago, so I was surprised to see how much the quality has dropped.

Most of the treadmills were unbalanced and wobbly, several ellipticals were in poor condition, and the pool area was very dim with multiple lights out. It’s clear the maintenance has been ignored for a long time. Poor maintenance eventually leads to replacing equipment, and that’s far more expensive than simply taking care of what’s already there.

I only used the gym for one day and will stick to my home gym, but 24 Hour Fitness really needs to focus on maintenance before things get worse.

After three years at 24hr Fitness, I've finally reached the point where I can no longer tolerate the ongoing issues. The gym itself is large, with a wide variety of equipment, but the experience has been consistently disappointing for several reasons:

Broken Equipment: Nearly half of the gym’s equipment has been out of order for a long time. Some machines even have signs warning against use, yet there’s no apparent effort to repair or replace them.

Unprofessional Staff: The staff has consistently been rude and unhelpful. They rarely acknowledge your presence, and the turnover rate is high—new staff come and go quickly, with their attitude often changing from friendly to indifferent after just a short time.

Cleanliness Issues: The gym is often dirty, and members routinely train without shirts, leaving equipment uncleaned after use. This lack of basic hygiene is a persistent problem.

Uncontrolled Environment: On numerous occasions, I've smelled marijuana throughout the gym. There appears to be no enforcement of policies regarding who can use the facility, and it seems some members feel comfortable working out while under the influence.

This list is by no means exhaustive, but I’ve reached the end of my patience. I'm tired of waiting for things to improve, so I've made the decision to leave.

Then, within the past several months I've had two separate incidents with deferent people accusing me of being homosexual and trying to start fights with me. People steal weights from this gym, and basic gym decency is forgone by many here. I'm moving out of Oakland and good riddance.

People complain a lot about 24-Hour fitness on high Street.
Complaining that things are always broken. I've been there twice and notice it could use an overhaul the women shower room and especially the pool it could be clean and filtered. I inquired about the cleanliness of the pool also when the steam room will be fixed. I was told about 2 weeks because there was only one guy who worked all 24-hour fitnesses. I inquired how often the pool would be cleaned and was told I'm not sure. 😳 However, one should take their home cleaners to wipe down machines (just in case) it would also help if whomever is responsible for all the garbage in the front of the building could be removed would help too. No one checks to make sure that the rules of being followed. As far as shoes and clothes are concerned. Some of us we recently transferred from other 24-hour facilities to this one, what a big change. The jacuzzi could use some help too.

So this place is a good example of what happens when the company doesn't support the location.

I'll first say this: the gym is fine. Lots of equipment, lots of space. The biggest issue is if something breaks down then it will be a while before it's repaired. Also the plumbing and water issues this building constantly has are so bizarre.

The El Cerrito gym is much smaller yet has more employees at all times and recently was renovated with new machines and other equipment.

This gym is much larger, has less employees, and the machines are rarely fixed in a timely manner. Today I was unable to even work out because the gym was closed because the building had no water. You'd think since 24 has its own app they would, idk, send out at an alert to members of the gym that it's closed. Instead, the app blasts you with products and coaching that isn't really valuable. They recently closed down the downtown Oakland location so this gym is all that people in Oakland and the surrounding area have unless they want to drive to El Cerrito or San Leandro. I think it's funny that 24 keeps raising it's prices but doesn't improve it's services or gyms much. Maybe they wouldn't have to declare bankruptcy all the time if they put more money into their gyms and less money in the pockets of their executives.

Minus 10 stars now. The 3 day free pass is partly a lie, it requires local ID and it doesn’t says on the day pass email. The two staff here, one white one Asian, is trying to find troubles for you, not trying to help. It’s the most disgusting experience I’ve ever had in at least 10 years. After I got the reply here with the owner I tried his way and can’t submitted reply on the website. Seems I got cheated again. And the reason I got these far here is because I found no way to talk and communicate, even a phone number.

this 24 hour fitness is below 1 star. the employees are lazy they never help re rack the weights. i always have to go searching for a dumbbell or plate. broken machines and treadmills everywhere. the court only stays open till 5 knowing ppl don’t get off work until then. just because it’s oakland it doesn’t mean treat the gym and facilities any less than any other city. i shouldn’t have to drive further away to get my moneys worth and get a decent gym experience.

Update August 2025 : 24 never reached out. They dont care. Water fountain still leaks. Mirrors still broken. Weights still missing. I even reached out to support on the 24 website with no response. Half of cardio machines still broken without posted signs.

In summary two word to describe this location: INDEFERENCE motivated by GREED. This facility will never improve.

24 should be ashamed to have this location represent its brand. Half of all cardio are broken, staff can even be bothered to put a piece of paper sayings it's broken. All the lighter weights have been stolen. The mirror is cracked and as been duct taped back together for years. The staff just talk to each other all day at the front counter. People easily just sneak in without a membership. It is clear the franchise owner does not care for this facility but only making profit, by not making necessary repairs. The water fountain is now broken. Video included, no wet floor sign. OSHA would probably have a field day at this location. 24 can't even be bothered to put in a new nice water bottle water fountain. Honestly have not once seen anyone working here with any capacity of authority as a supervisor or manger. I think this location is run by minimum wage associates from open till close, with no supervision. The hardest working person here is the guy that walks around with the vacuum.

On several occasions have asked for management to address the 3 same individuals who blast their music so loud from their boom box in their duffle bag. I am always told there is no member of management on site they will be there tomorrow. Their solution was to write no loud music in marker on the mirrors. Despite this message being present, there is no one on site to enforce compliance.

Put simply this location has inspired me to invest my money in converting my garage into a personal gym. This facility needs a remodel, and new management that cares about the equipment and maintaining the peace for all patrons. Instead the owner has chosen complacency out of fear of addressing the bad behavior of 3 guest at the expense of ALL other patrons. Annual membership costs at least $200, revoking the memberships of 3 people who are in clear violation of the rules, and have no care for the well being of other patrons would not effect the bottom line of profit for this facility.

The membership fees at this location are being funneled into someone pocket. I'm just not sure if it goes to management in the form of bonuses, directly to the franchise owner, or to the share holders. One thing is clear, membership fees are not being put towards maintaining this facility.

If you look at previous bad reviews 24 reaches out stating they are striving to do better, but nothing ever changes. This trend goes back for years. The only thing keeping this gym going is there is no local alternative and no one wants to speak up for getting what they pay for with their gym membership. If 24 employs internal auditors they need to come to this location. The reality is it is probably cheaper for 24 to offer refunds to people who complain, than actually fix the problem. This facility will never improve.

This gym deserves more resources to clean and maintain. It seve a big geographic area with a wide customer base. Yet, 24 hours simply does not hire enough staff to clean and maintain or to make sure only members enter and use the facility. As a result, the changing rooms, restrooms, and the pool get disgusting. I even cut my foot on glass in the shower area. Lots of potential to be a great gym with parking, lots of space and a pool. But always 2nd rate because of the lack of adequate cleaning or maintenance.

The men’s locker room, toilets and shower area needs more attention. They are often very dirty and smell awful. There are no shower heads in the entire shower area. Not sure why other 24 hour fitness locations have far better amenities and have overall better facilities. Others and myself have complained about the conditions with no response from the staff. I am very disappointed in the rip off of this company. The name is 24 Hour Fitness and yet they are not opened 24 hours a day. Other gyms such as Planet Fitness somehow do it yet this company cannot even though it’s their damn name!

It’s only opened from 5am- 11pm and they don’t even keep their word on that. Recently I came to this location last Friday, April 4, 2025 at 10pm only to find this place closed and a letter on the door saying there is no staff. When I signed up this place was 24/7 and I have been ripped off ever since the reduction in hours. And as of that weren’t bad enough now I can’t even trust the hours they supposedly claim to be opened. I might have to find a better gym honestly! I wish I could give zero stars!!!

I only had my gym membership for 2 months. I loved the fitness classes offered here however the gym is disgustingly dirty. The pool/ sauna area smells like diarrhea and foul body odor. I’d signed up for Kaiser’s ‘OnePass’ program for Seniors to get healthier, never guessing that after only one month I’d get robbed in the locker room. Tuesday March 11th 2025 I reported that the total contents of my locker in the Woman’s section was completely cleaned out: my phone, house keys, car fob, business keys, id, credit cards, in short: EVERYTHING. I WAS STRANDED. This was obviously a professional who was quick and efficient. Yet staff seemed unconcerned as I was panicking about my stolen stuff, that it had just happened! (Later, I found I had to cancel my upcoming flight out of state as a result, while the thief wrecked havoc with the cards, racking up hundreds of dollars @ Target and Safeway). There was no call for security, no one bothered to interview me, and the desk staff could hardly get off their own phones to help me. I can’t believe Kaiser suggests this Gym for Seniors, as there is no Manager to report to, and this seems to be a regular occurrence here! I don’t get why no one warned me about the locker room, I really felt like a sitting duck. Obviously, I will never return, and you shouldn’t either.

This location should be great as far as the layout and amenities.. however they do not care about maintaining the locker room and showers. It is always disgusting. Last week there were bloody used tampons in the showers. Most of the shower heads are gone in the women’s. There is always trash on the floors broken lockers, nasty showers. Was looking fwd to my visit here as it usually is a step above other 24 hr fitness es in the bay. Staff was on point and friendly but basketball court was closed, kind of inexplicably...just some authoritarian style note on the window saying it was only open 5am to 3pm certain days, and today wasn't one of those days. Pobrecito mio. Limited amount of free weights under 30 lbs. Plenty of machines and floor space though. Hot tub is large but way over chlorinated and the jets are non existent..instead they have soft bubble spewing machine around the edges that splash the burning chemicals into your eyes and make it hard to sit for long. Sauna is decent but not hot enough...def not 200 degrees indicated by the thermostat which must be broken. The shower did have jets...they could have used that kind of power down in LA...but a bit painful in such a small space...the shower doors did lock nicely though so there was no danger of the super spray opening the door and In juring bypassers. Pretty clean overall, but fit the general profile of 24 hour fitness in urban areas just doing minimal improvements l. Really wish they would up their investment but I know they are so affordable. So it will keep the in and out vibe.

I’m new to the area and was looking to join a gym. I signed up for the free 3 day trial. I went in at 5 after work. I asked for some help and one of the guys behind the desk told another team member to help me. (Had his back turned the whole time) told me that the 3 day pass was only before 2pm. I asked if it’s for all 24hr fitness. The team member asked the guy who had his backed turned and he said loudly “ I don’t know. The bay area 24 Hour Fitness gyms are in close competition for worst workout area. Although this one is a little bit cleaner, it constantly has broken equipment. Some equipment has been broken for over a month. The sitting calf extension machine and at least one treadmill have exposed jagged metal. Perfect for losing a finger. The dumbbells are constantly out of order or missing. Hard to have any sort of workout tempo when you can't use the equipment you need. Not to mention, NOT 24 HOURS here.

I've probably been to a dozen 24s in the bay area and LA and this might be the best one. I don't have to put my towel over my mouth and nose while using the restroom like the ones in San Jose. The 24 hour corporate management in the East Bay discriminates against seniors. At the Moraga facility, they’ve shut down all of the classes aimed at seniors. When talking to the staff there all they say is that corporate is responsible and there’s nothing they can do about it. It’s unconscionable to single out a certain group. Most gyms like 24 has their fair share of problems, this particular one is not all bad, the only gripe I have with it is the bathrooms. It smells like gotham city

I just joined this gym because I moved to Alameda. I was a little skeptical only because it’s sort of off the beaten path. But damn, they have a lot of great equipment! It’s a mix of old school, new school. Couldn’t be happier! Can’t beat the price either!

Kyle is a rude, vulgar, person. Cancelled my entire family's membership because of him. Unprofessionalism is off the charts. He used the middle finger and the f word when asked for proof of cancellation. I understand that no special skills are needed to work there, but at the very least politeness and empathy should be used when a client has a request for information. It should never become a profanity laced tirade where one declares themselves the be all and end all of a minimum wage job. There is always a supervisor and if he isn't capable of handling requests for information he should not be there. Worst customer service ever. Don't waste your money or precious time there. Worst location in the Bay Area

I joined this club because of the convenience. It's close to me, and it's relatively cheap. It goes without saying, there are plenty of reviews here that already highlight the state of machines, overall cleanliness, organization, and inconsiderate patrons that share the gym. This review is about the lack of security and attempts to make sure our belongings as well as ourselves are safe while attending this gym. My backpack (containing my car keys, and wallet) was stolen from one of the lockers more than likely by another club member. When talking to staff, I was made aware that this "always happens" and it's a "common occurrence". Management wasn't much help in following up when I informed them of the theft nor mitigating the issue. There's another reviewer here who was luckier than I and their issue was handled with the customer service I had hoped to receive after actually having my things stolen. Unfortunately, I have to constantly follow up with this gym to actually get some kind of response. If you do end up coming here, keep ALL your belongings with you when working out and just use the lockers for your dirty clothes.

Had a horrible experience with Patrick. He’s a bald white dude with bad breath. He harassed us and tried denying us gym access even though we had a 3 day pass. He was extremely hostile and tried fighting my friend in the parking lot. I am utterly shocked that such an unprofessional small angry man could be managing a gym. He probably can’t get it up at home. I’m confident my pet hamster Jeramy could do a better job. Steer clear of this gym entirely.

Gym is good, however needs to be maintained.

3 of the stair machines are out of service. Used to be more so i guess that's an improvement. However they are fixed with tape. It looks like i repaired them ( this is not a compliment).

The showers, wasting water - dripping, doors don't stay closed, etc

This place could be really good but needs maintenance. These aren't new complaints they have been this way for months to years depending on the issue.

Update: things that were broken remain broken and now machines to add to this. Other 24hrs have more machines in working order

***THEIF ALERT***
Update below.

Yesterday after I finish my work out I was walking in the locker room and witness the man pictured look to see if the people next to him were looking then attempt to use his key to open my locker! He claimed we had similar locks and he “couldn’t find his locker.” If that was true why look to see if anyone is watching you? Why not let the locker room know you’re looking for your locker? Why not alert management so you have someone to corroborate your story? If my locker had popped would he have gone through my belongings?? This club is notorious for having things be stolen from lockers this guy needs to go unless you want him “checking your lock” too! Staff on hand took a report and said they would consult management. I will update with result but allowing this THEIF to stay is unacceptable and if he does stay I will be filing a report to corporate naming all parties involved. 24hr Fitness is this how you operate?

**UPDATE**
Spoke with the manager, Patrick, he was super understanding of the situation and is doing his best to have it resolved by reaching out to cooperate and following the proper channels. He even offered to cover my gym fees for “X” months and asked me to check in with him in a weeks time for a resolution. Just wanted to say big thanks to Patrick in this situation.

The staff's service attitude is good and the hygiene is average, but there is no advance notice to temporarily close the venue or change the opening time, and the customer only realizes that he has come for nothing after arriving.

It was good i go with my dad to swim there are some karans like one time i was swimming and a lady was yelling at me and saying why i was in the middle i was quite he was yelling to a minor i was like bro u are not swimming u are just standing there for 20 minutes i don't know if ur going to swim she say she report me she old and grumpy

Just signed up like a month ago.
The showers here are either broken, don't work, doors don't shut, and they waist water. Some of the shower heads don't work, which in hand waste even more water. The showers only have two temperatures hot, or BURNING hot. The staff doesn't check the shower area ever. The mens locker room probably hasn't been mopped in weeks with some good o'l bleach.
This place is pretty unsanitary.
Even the machines have dust, dirt, and haven't been wiped down in months.
Part of managing a gym is managing the cleanliness of a gym. Also, the pool needs to be cleaned more often chemically by a professional.They really need a cleaning crew, or start making that younger staff clean because sitting by the register with 3 people all day isn't helping the property.
They should have one person, maybe two at the register, and the rest of the team should be cleaning machines to ensure that the gym is sanitary. They are lucky I am not the manager here. I'd be putting you all to work with a spray bottle and a nice rag. Sitting all day on my watch while the gym looks nasty would not happen under my watch. I wouldn't care who doesn't likes it either. This location is pathetic in cleanliness. Staff is nice but they could do A LOT MORE when it come to running the actual gym: checking machines, cleaning duties, walking around to see what you can do. Get some of those younger employees to work with some anti-bacterial spray and get them to cleaning those treadmills!!!!

Oh and the mold in the mens shower is super healthy.

This gym is huge and has lots of great machines and amenities that not all gyms have. I've been to this gym a few times and, so far, it has never been crowded. I've never had to wait for a cardio machine. There is a pool, jacuzzi, steam room and sauna, as well as all of the standard equipment. Always plenty of parking too. The showers need some attention as many of the doors do not close and water does not flow freely from many of the shower heads. It is also sometimes difficult to dial in a comfortable water temperature.

The machines are dirty. It's a large space but it can be manage alot better. Sometimes the weights from dumbells to weight plates feel sticky. As if enforcement of cleaning after yourself is not important. The staff have become more friendly. Overall the place could be run alot better 😌.

Not my regular 24 gym I go too but I tried it and really like the facility and the faculty only thing that was crazy was it didn't have the tumble dryer so if you use the pool or steam room you got to leave with wet clothes. I couldn't believe it but the front desk confirmed for me I quote they said "too fancy" hilarious. However parking is great and its a clean place.

Terrible costumer services, I was there with a guest. I can't believe the way they talked to us.
They have no idea how to treat their costumers !
We pay a membership to be disrespected. I’m taking my membership else where. DONT COME TO THIS FACILITY ! Save yourself time and a bad moment.
