My one-star rating has nothing to do with cleanliness, service quality, or class availability. It is solely because, after nearly two decades at this location with a loyal member base, management did not secure ownership of the building. I understand that when you lease, certain factors are beyond your control; however, the inability to purchase the property—especially when market conditions may have been favorable during COVID—points to a significant lapse in long-term financial planning. For a business with such a strong following, failing to invest in its own stability is a missed opportunity that now leaves members at the mercy of a corporate takeover.

I signed up for a one year membership because this gym is close to my home. Unfortunately I found out from another member last week that it is closing in a few days!!!! I never received any notification about this closure from 24 hour fitness and when I sought to get a prorated refund for the one third of the year I won't be able to use my membership, 24 hour fitness refused because apparently they transferred my gym to another location without my consent (or even knowledge). I don't have a car so I can't realistically go to the other location and would never have signed up if I had known they were closing. Stay away from these scammers!!

Update 8/13/2025: In reply to 24 hour fitness' response to my initial review, the form you provided is how I was able to initiate contact that led to being told I cannot receive a refund. I asked the rep who wrote me for further clarification and have still not received a response. I'll gladly change/delete my review if I'm able to receive a prorated refund.

Gross. Really dirty and they opened 2 hours before I got there. I'm going to be nice and give them a shot to clean up some before I post photos. I get having run down equipment but FILTH is crazy. I saw people trying to buy supplements but there wasn't anyone at the front. Because of that a bum just walked in. Why do I pay? I'll delete this post if y'all try harder. Came here on a fluke and was really impressed with the gym equipment. Every machine I used was will lubed and smooth. I wish my 24hour in the San Francisco was like here. Will definitely come back if I'm in the area.

This gym is in serious need of a deep cleaning. The dust buildup and cobwebs are so bad, it’s only a matter of time before they come crashing down on someone. It seems to be a mostly male crowd here, and unfortunately, proper gym etiquette is lacking—weights are rarely re-racked, and equipment is often left in disarray.

There are only two sanitation stations for the entire facility, which is very concerning. I haven’t seen a single person wipe down a machine after use, and there doesn’t appear to be any staff actively maintaining or cleaning the space during the day.

The only bright spot was the two women at the front desk—they were friendly and welcoming. Sadly, that was the only positive aspect of my experience.

Maty-at the front desk, it’s such a radiant sunlight. Every time I come in she always has such a warm smile and always such a pleasant and helpful demeanor.!!! Not to mention the fact that she educated me on properly checking in which ended up benefiting me because I gained all these points from checking in through the 24 hour app and because of that I was able to book my trip to Vegas coming up using the points with a significant discounted rate for my hotel in Las Vegas. So pleasant and so professional she really is the highlight of my day when I come to work out at this 24 hour. Thank you MATY!!

There’s a lot of potential at this location, and some individual staff members really stand out — shoutout to Amane from custodial. She’s constantly moving, cleaning the sauna, steam room, bathrooms, and mopping the workout floor. She truly puts in the work and it shows. I came in on Memorial Day and the place smelled like Pine-Sol — it was actually refreshing for a gym.

Lily at the front desk is another bright spot. She’s kind, welcoming, and knowledgeable. She’s one of the few who consistently greets guests with a smile and patience. There’s also an early morning African American woman who opens the gym and is such a pleasant presence at 5am — she deserves acknowledgment too.

That’s where most of the positives end.

I appreciate the validated parking in the early mornings and late afternoons. The gym is generally clean, though the smell can be rough — somewhat expected, but still worth noting.

The management and front desk culture could use some improvement. I’ve personally witnessed the manager handle guest interactions poorly, including threatening to terminate memberships over weight re-racking. I understand gym rules, but communication goes a long way. It’s frustrating when there are 1–3 staffers at the desk, often chatting or on their phones, barely acknowledging members. The only time I’ve really seen them active is during their own workouts on the floor.

Another issue: lost items. I’ve had two pairs of workout shoes thrown away after being misplaced for less than 24 hours. As a former 24 Hour employee myself (Antioch location), I understand policy, but it’s disheartening to see how little effort is made to store or safeguard member property. The so-called lost and found is barely a drawer, and the area they reference is just a pile of random workout gear.

This location could easily be a 4-star gym with better consistency in cleanliness, functioning machines, and a more balanced, customer-focused policy enforcement. I don’t mind that it gets busy — that’s a good thing. But leadership and culture matter, and right now they’re holding this gym back.

2 stars because this only about one staff. I’ve always been happy with this place but now I’ve had enough. I’ve been a loyal member of 24 Hour Fitness for almost 5 years, always paid on time—even during months I barely used the gym. Today, I canceled my membership due to repeated harassment and clear discrimination from one particular staff member who has targeted me and my sister for months.

Despite following their rules and adding my sister to my account like they told us to, she was denied access just because I wasn’t with her. This only ever happens when this one employee is working—she was on duty at 4:52 PM on April 23, 2025. She also refused to give us her name, which is extremely unprofessional and concerning.

The truth is, her actions come from pure hate and jealousy. It’s sad, but some people just can’t handle seeing beautiful, confident women walk through the door. Her energy is bitter and toxic, and it’s disappointing that 24 Hour Fitness would allow someone like that to represent them, especially in a city like Oakland. The entire time this was happening she was laughing as if it was a joke. It’s very sad & racist.

LOVE this club and the energy the staff brings when you walk in! The size of the club is pretty comfortable and having free access to the parking garage (during certain hours) is a plus. Women’s restroom is consistently cleaned compared to other clubs which is great shoutout Amane. And on top of it all, LILY who works there is such an amazing part of the staff. Her positive energy radiates and can bounce off towards anyone that walks her way, she is truly a light and is very knowledgeable whenever I express concerns about my membership or any general questions. There is one singular reason to come to this gym: AMANE! For the past several years, i have been using the sauna 4 - 5 times a week, and since Amane has come on board with the cleaning crew, my experience has improved 100 fold. Public gyms are generally dirty, germy places, and the sauna used to be "touch and go" as far as cleanliness. Amane cleans the wet area daily (and even SINGS while she works!) so I can count on having a good experience. She also ensures that the bathrooms are kept clean as well. Thank you so much Amane. You are greatly appreciated!

I had $1500-$2000 worth of cash and gift cards stolen from my locker, plus other items (such as prescription glasses, driver's license, car keys) that will cost about $400 to replace. I was using a lock, which was cut by bolt cutters I assume.

Yes, I should not have brought that to the gym; however, when I spoke to the staff about what happened and showed them my broken lock, they stated that they let an unhoused woman in who claimed that her phone died and she did not have her ID, and it might have been her who stole my belongings. Staff told me that I should not have used the women's locker room lockers if I didn't want my stuff to get stolen - that I should have used the lockers at the front because employees have their eyes on these lockers. If that's the case, maybe have a sign encouraging the use of these more secure lockers. I understand that 24-hr Fitness states they are not liable for stolen items on their premises, but the business is negligent by letting someone enter who was not supposed to enter.

Moral of the story: if you are stupid like me and accidentally take your valuables to the gym, definitely don't use the lockers, or just don't go to this location at all.

Even though the staff basically told me that there was nothing they could do or nothing corporate would even try to do regarding my stolen belongings, the staff were empathetic to me and let me stay after hours while I was waiting for AAA to get a tow truck to pick up my car, which I do appreciate. I assume 24-Hour Fitness does not pay their employees enough to care about security/letting potentially suspicious people into the gym.

What's really annoying about 24HF is you see a lot of people occupying the machines or weights while on their cellphones, doing nothing, holding or preventing other people from using them. Gym etiquette should be explained, reminded and enforced. It's stressful and the staff did/does nothing about it. I gave it a second try after almost a year and it’s worse than before. When I walked in with the trial the front desk person was very nice but seen lost.

Never offered me a tour or directed me to the locker room. I walked in and the smell of sweaty floors was insane.

As you walk to the back to find the locker rooms you can see all the rusted machines and the cardio covered in sweat and tons and tons of dust.

You walk into locker room and see a bunch of broken lockers very very dirty floor tiles and covered in some sort of mold

As I walked into the urinals the stench of urine was so bad and the urinals covered in urine all over and floors pools of urine and rust and mold all over

Went to wash my hands and there were two guys butt naked touching themselves and staring at me as I washed my hands. I walked out really quick and had to turn back almost when I was near the exit because I forgot my water bottle on the sink. When I walked in again the two guys were in the same shower so I left to the exit and will never turn back again.

There is no supervision of the gym floors as simple as someone going around wiping equipment or maintaining locker rooms like most gyms do. This gym needs to close and needs to be deep cleaned and a better management team needs to take charge.

Feces in the showers and the hot tub!!! On a regular basis!!! Creeps with cams who would follow people into the locker room. (I had to report someone who was harassing me who accused me of harassment. Luckily the hot tub room cams showed that I was the one telling the truth. Then I saw the other literal human piece of ish in the hot tub) Random cleaning ladies who just show up in the shower and changing rooms without being announced. (I didn’t really care about that, but, still awkward.)

This gym is really bad. Like really really bad. Most of the machines are so old that you genuinely cannot use them effectively. The resistance to some machines feels so off that you can’t accurately measure what weight you’re actually lifting, because the machine hasn’t been greased in years or the cables/moving pieces haven’t been replaced in years either. When things break, they stay broken. For months. There are so many missing dumbbells that I could not incorporate dumbbells into my routine at all, because there would be jumps from 30lbs to 40lbs, or 50lbs to 70lbs and I would have no realistic way to progress. The locker room is a nightmare, the toilets smell god awful, the showers are a genuine biohazard, and I’ve seen roaches make this place their home. This place needs entirely new machine equipment, a deep sanitation of every crevice, new shower curtains, a pressure washing of every inch of the bathrooms, showers, steam room, and hot tub, and a healthy dose of bleach to finish it all off. I really have no idea how this place is still standing

They need to raise the pay so that they can hire more people, as it looks and sounds like this place is seriously understaffed. I personally believe that the cleanliness of the gym is also dependent on the clientele and not just the cleaning crew. This gym just doesn't have the cleanest clientele. There's also a high degree of vandalism. When it used to be open 24 hours a day, non members like homelessness would sneak in and use the shower and sauna area. Sometimes the front desk would even let them in. Don't know the situation now.

This place went down fast. Clear lack of hygienic practices here and cleaning appears non existent. Seems to be no sign of management as I never see the employees organizing or sanitizing. Weights always out of place and many things are broken or falling apart. I switched away from location as my primary gym.

The dirtiest and worst club that I have ever seen in the 24hrfitness network. Every single elliptical cardio is broken in some way. The restrooms are unattended, smelly and dirty. On top of that, they require muzzles as of June 2022 - even if a person has a medical exemption.

A truly sad example of the demise of 24hr fitness. Filthy locker rooms, broken equipment that's never repaired, reduced hours, and a few truly hostile staff members (among some really nice people that still try) that make for a generally unwelcoming environment reminiscent of a jail rather than a gym. If your a member, pass this location up and go to the High Street 24hr fitness.

I got a member ship at 24 hours for a month. I went to the 24 hour fitness near where I live and they literally just got my name and email and card number. I tried to cancel my account and they told me I have to pay 300 dollars to cancel my account which is absurd because they did not notify me before telling me I am entering a contract. They also don’t tell you that you have to pay a yearly fee of 60 dollars so it is a big scam where it seems like they are just charging you a 30 dollar for a month but they are making you enter a contract for year. When I signed up for the membership it said nothing about a fee of 300 dollars for cancelling. Maybe in the agreement that no one reads. Don’t buy the monthly member ship if you are planning on going to 24 hours. Go to Costco and get the 2 year member ship it is much cheaper and they won’t scam you

It's no real fault of the staff there who are very friendly, but it is clear that management at this location is either nonexistent or just doesn't care at all about upkeep of any of the equipment or facilities. Sauna/Steam Room/Hot Tub are out of order frequently for weeks at a time. There are also people being allowed to use the facility who are there with specific intent to steal (they bring tools to unlock lockers in the changing room). Compared to any other 24 hr location I've visited in the Bay Area this one doesn't even come close to the standard of service you'd find nearby Berkeley or El Cerrito. Waiting for this place to close down or have a complete overhaul of management to be honest.

Went to this gym about three times and that is it for me. I parked on the street at night to take a Zumba class and what a mistake. My car was broken into with nothing stolen and an expensive bill to replace my small quarter window. I’m never going to this gym again.

I often find broken equipment such as the sauna.being broken for over a month. Also there is quite often a few homeless using the facility since the homelessness is getting really bad in Oakland and they have no where else to keep warm in the winter.

2 ladies at front desk had terrible attitude and put down veterans and me. Refused to give there names and when prompted gave me a managers card trying to trick me to report him by accident. I also informed them that I found lice shampoo in men's shower and risk of possible outbreak but was told to screw off and that I would be reported as harrasing them and a loss of my membership. I do hope both these ladies take precautions about the possibility of a lice outbreak in the clubhouse.

I have been a member who has been in the business for many years. I have been paying my membership fee by automatic payment. I pay more than others, 41.99 per month? why? Because I am in Oakland, there is no swimming pool here, the Sauna often fail, the winter hot water temperature is not enough, I often use the Sauna, so I need to use bath towels, which is why I pay a monthly fee of 41.99.

About two months ago, the 24 Hour Fitness was no longer providing bath towels for members because of recycling problems.
I never received any changes such as email or SMS notification, and I did not refund it to me because I was four years membership. Adding 24 Hour Fitness before is the cost of adding bath towels! This is how the 24 Hour Fitness, which is known as a member priority, sees members.
On 7/24/2019, my bank card was reissued, making the payment for the automatic payment setup not completed. I have never received any phone or email or written notice until today( 8/5 / 2019) morning, when I entered the check-in, Staff was told that I was blocked from entering, I felt humiliated, I told the staff that I did not bring a new card, Can you agree me get to use first, after to log in again?
I have joined 24 Hour Fitness for so many years? I have never owed money, but the attitude of the staff is unbearable. I don’t think they need a member like me, so I opt out and they agree. After returning, I received an email notifying me of the cancellation of membership.

In the afternoon of 8/5/2019, I received a reminder call. The tone was like the morning attitude of the staff. checked my personal information and address. This is the hand-off and tone used by the general dunning company. The lady on the phone told me that I Also owes 24 Hour Fitness August membership fee of $41.99. I asked her for details, she only told me like a manuscript robot, I have to pay immediately on the phone! I am very angry. I feel that 24 Hour Fitness is constantly humiliating me. I ask for a breakdown of this fee. Please confirm in writing or by email. I am unable to confirm who is on the phone? She asked me to pay the arrears on the phone immediately. I checked my bank debit me, and my last debit date was 7/2. I have already withdrawn from the membership and will never join such a club again. Please give me a detailed proof of this fee.

DO NOT GO TO THIS GYM UNLESS YOU WANT YOUR CAR BROKEN INTO! There is only street parking and the people on the street will watch you get into and out of your car, and make a move when they have the opportunity. This was our first time attending this gym, and someone broke into our car and stole our belongings. There are NO surveillance cameras around the building. A local resident also said this is a very frequent thing, and the police do nothing about it. This gym is also poorly kept and the staff are rude and unprofessional. Please save yourself the headache and go somewhere else. This facility is negative star worthy.

Recently moved to Oakland so I decided to sign up for the 7-day free trial in hopes of finding a local gym to work out my routine during the week.

Pros: Big, seems to have most weights/machines/cardio equipment you would need

Cons: Disgustingly DIRTY. I've worked out in gyms in Harlem, NY, NJ, Houston, and LA, and I've never encountered a gym this dirty. I went close to 9pm in hopes of a dying crowd (it was still fairly busy), and the weightlifting area just smelled of equipment that hasn't been wiped down all day. As far as I could tell, there weren't spray bottles/disposable towels for the members to even wipe down their own equipment.

Weights were all over the place, no one seemed to care about normal gym etiquette. The glass windows were so dusty that someone traced the words "Clean Me" into it!

I walked into the locker room at the end of my workout to wash the grime off my hands, and of course, the locker room reminded me of a NYC subway. There was literally mud on the floor.

Suffice to say, I don't think I want to finish out my 7-day trial. They need to do something about this gym.

Employees very unhelpful. I have asked them to cancel my membership twice now, and here it is on credit card statement again. You can't cancel online. You can call before 6pm eastern to cancel. I called at 5:10, was on hold for 50 mins, then the system hung up on me... So easy to start a membership, and SO difficult to cancel. Very dishonest.

Ive been visiting about 4 times a week for the past year now... while there is alot to improve, I plan on remaining a semi satisfied customer.

Parking is a major pain. meters are 2$/hr if you get a spot.

Machines are old but work. not the worst of down times but they are short a few olypic bars so the ones there are shared for benches and racks.

Locker rooms just had new lockers but smelled pretty bad before construction.

facility can get heavily crowded( many with poor gym etiquette) outside on work and lunch break hours. I go at 930 get a park spot and begin by 10 leave when i see herds of downtown professionals on their lunch break.

Staff is decent. Friendly but disconnected. Classes offered which Ill jump in on spuratically. Oh! The weights are always incorrectly racked and Ill see the same things out of place for a few days straight.. at which time Ill do it in hopes of saving some mental energy..

3.5 stars. they have heavy objects and mostly enough space to use them.

I mean get what you pay for. Most of the machines and treadmills usually work but always assume a few are out of order. Paper towel dispensers are rarely filled so also assume all equipment isn't wiped down after someone uses them. Don't go into bathroom, period. Staff is friendly and helpful though, and the spin class instructor does a great job. for 300 total for the year it does it's bare minimum job.

After five weeks of remodeling the shower room, the showers are almost unusable. Of eight showers maybe three are available. Four have broken handles. Two missing a wall. The one that have a handle are often out of soap. So you can have a little privacy. Or soap. Or water. But not all three. Sometimes not even two.

An average gym with average equipment, staff, and clientele.

It appears quite hard for one to find a good gym in Oakland. This one sort of fit the bill for me as I was looking for free weights. They exist, but are only accessible when you show up after midnight and before 2AM.

There are two of the incline, decline, and flat benches. And there are always seven people working out. Dumbbells under 40lbs are self aware here and take regular walks down the dark aisles.

The dumbbells that do get replaced are in the wrong spot. My workout involves rearranging them and it's better than simply lifting.

Periodically there are classes, and the music blasts out of the room with no regards to the quiet lifters who are just wanting to get a work out done.

On the other hand, parking is free on weekdays after 430. A decent selection of protein shakes exist. And the weight machines are ample.

Not a good spot for weight lifters. Okay spot for machines.

Edit: I lasted three months and I quit. The place only got worse as did the clientile. Weights were hard to find, people were loud, aerobics room was loud, parking was not the best. The nice thing about this place is that they didn't cling or cry when I told them I'm quitting. City Sports is a way better option.

First of all I don't agree with removing the towel service!
Lots of people including myself come during the lunch hour to get a quick workout and we need towels for a shower before going back to work!
Who ever decided that this is good idea is very stupid and they have the nerve to say it's for "Healthier Environment" and to save water like if I brought my own towel I wouldn't need to wash it!!!
This gym bathroom is the worst, always one of the urinals is not working the other doesn't flash water good.
Multiple times I found homeless taking showers in the bathrooms!
I am a member in 24 Hour Fitness since Jan/2014 but I think 24 hours fitness will not work for me anymore.

Customer service staff have a bad attitude in this gym. I went to the girl at the reception saying I want to activate my membership back and just need to see the gym, and she says we dont have people to assist you and you can’t see the gym. If this gym want membership, they need to be more professional and friendly when dealing with current customers. Taking my money to another gym now.

I activated a free 3 day pass online to give the club a try, and when I got there at 530am, the person working there said I had to come in between 10 and 6 p.m. because they can't activate it outside of those hours. I checked the fine print everywhere and it says nothing about that. One would think a place named 24 Hour Fitness wouldn't have limitations on what hours you could show up. Not a great first impression at all!
