I was almost scared off by the reviews on this page, but I'm glad I wasn't. I tried a couple of different gyms in PB and this one was BY FAR the best value. For less than $20 a month, you get a gym that is not fancy, but has everything you need for cardio and lifts. Sure, the bathrooms and locker rooms aren't the greatest, but I'm not there for the amenities, I'm there to work out and leave. Nicer gyms in PB will cost you 5x the cost of this gym. For the price, this is perfect. And FWIW, I've never had issues finding an elliptical. This location may not be for everyone, but if you like value, it's a great option. The front desk staff are super nice and helpful too. My only gripe is that the parking spots in the lot are small and sometimes you end up parking super close to another car. But then again...the parking is free soooo

It seems this gym has been abandoned by the corporate office! About 40% of equipment is non functional! Ridiculous, air quality is poor, homeless using bathrooms and showering there! Perhaps they are going bankrupt? Other than convenient location I would not recommend this gym!

I’ve been going for most 10 years now but it’s getting bad. 3 months for the same machines broken. I even suggested hosting a fundraiser to get new equipment and they just won’t do anything . It’s getting out of control. I feel like members would help contribute to new machines and we could raise money. The “maintenance” fixing it isn’t working. We need a new plan.

Been a member here since moving to the area in 2017. The 5 Star reviews can only be attributed to loyal die hards. There is some great space and equipment here. If you want a power lifting gym they have just enough to keep you happy. On the other hand, I cannot rationalize paying an ever growing monthly fee and yearly fee. Some of the equipment has been broken for over a year. Constantly new broken equipment that takes months upon months to fix. The upholstery on more equipment is flaking off. There’s never been a day in the last year that all the cleaning stations have been fully stocked and functional. There’s no accountability for gym goers to replace weights or various equipment. There’s no accountability to clean equipment after use. The bathrooms are almost guaranteed to be in disarray, smell foul and have enough germs to cause the next world pandemic.
In summary, due to rising costs and deteriorating standards and maintenance , I can no longer justify the membership. Same goes for La Jolla location.

I wish I could give this gym a -10 but unfortunately I can’t. Equipments are always broken and they don’t get fixed for months! Ladies locker room is a joke with broken faucets and toilets. They barely clean this gym so most of the time it’s disgusting. Absolutely hate it but it’s close to where I live so that’s that.

Update on my review. I went back to the gym the very next day after my posting. Kudos to the owner for following up on his quick promise of cleaning up. Much better, thank you!! That being said I'll still keep my fingers crossed on broken equipment...

I’ve been going to this gym since 2019 & it’s definitely gone down hill. It still gets the job done, but as others noted, so many of the machines are broken & the gym is not that clean.

There have been recent renovations to other 24 hour locations (such as the location in Laguna Niguel)… is this location on the schedule any time soon? It needs updating badly.

Nothing in this gym truly works. Hell, the free weights are almost broken too. More than 60% of equipment is always down, every machine is missing at least one component. Truly a horribly managed and operated gym. Only reason I come is because it’s two blocks from my house and it’s cheap. It honestly should be free for how poorly it’s upheld.

The treadmills are almost all broken. Went in last week and three of about fifteen were working. Hopped on one that looked like it was working and started running only for it to skip and almost launch me off the treadmill. Guy next to me said “oh we know it does that”, 24 hour employee said “oh we know it does that” - then put up a sign.

Besides the broken treadmills, probably six or seven machines were broken.

They don't care about this location. I won’t be renewing my membership. There are better places in PB.

Walked 40 minutes in the heat after I was confirmed a 3 day pass. Was told that I actually can’t use it if I don’t have a San Diego ID. This was not stated on the website for the confirmation email (they just said you need a photo ID on website). Was told I would have to pay $30 a day instead. I don’t recommend going here with the offer three day pass online.

As a long time member of this gym it’s very frustrating to have at least half of the treadmills and stair masters out of commission. Those that are working either make noise, have loose belts (which are a liability) or vibrate badly when moving. This has been the case for months on end. I find it hard to believe recent reviews of 5 stars are from people who worked out here. They must not have used the cardio machines. Upgrades are constant at your other clubs. This one is right on a beach that’s a tourist haven and you’re missing out on revenue. Please replace these machines!

Riley has been incredible for helping me start my fitness journey off on the right foot! I was hitting that wall in late 20s where my metabolism started slowing down (for the first time ever) and I realized I was gaining weight and didn’t feel I had much strength when I needed it. Especially because I work from home, I was just so sedentary. I had never really worked out in any serious manner before though. This year, I knew I needed to change that. But after committing to going to the gym a few times, I almost immediately injured myself from bad technique. That’s when I decided to schedule the free session that comes with a new membership at 24 hour after I recovered.

After that initial session with Riley, which went very well, I scheduled 8 more sessions. I really wanted help making sure I had a strong plan in place and that I was using proper technique to avoid getting injured again. He gave me a thought-out workout plan that matched my schedule and goals. When I asked for it, he gave me tips on diet and even gave me recipes and helped me get started with meal prepping. Not only did he do that, but much more. He was kind and supportive, great to chat with between sets, but still tough when I needed it. We’ve remained in contact for random questions I have and encouragement.

I’m now 8 weeks into the plan he set out for me (4 days/week), and I’m starting to see real results. I’m down to 206 lbs from 220 and I can start to look and feel stronger. I’m trying to get down to 200 by June and am confident I’ll get there. I feel amazing. Not only are the changes physical, but I’m way more focused and can get a lot more done. The work feels good instead of exhausting, and easier to refrain from engaging in bad habits too. I’m never going back to being so sedentary… truly life-changing!

I genuinely can’t thank Riley enough. He gave me exactly what I needed and none of what I didn’t. No nonsense! Just gains 💪

Despite its convenient location in Mission Beach, this gym falls short of expectations in terms of cleanliness and maintenance. The equipment is consistently in disrepair, and the floors and equipment are not adequately cleaned. During peak hours, only two staff members are available at the front desk, leaving the cleaning responsibilities unattended. Furthermore, several pieces of equipment have been malfunctioning for over a year. Clearly, the current manager’s supervision is inadequate, and their replacement is necessary to address these issues.

Edited- to add that I canceled my membership with Saimon. They told me I was good to go, however I noticed that I continued to get billed. After trying 3 times to get a hold of someone( The general manager) and them giving me the runaround, I had to call corporate to file a complaint and get my money back.

Avoid this place at all costs. The employees do nothing all day. The gym is filthy. Employees are hanging out looking at their phones all day.Nobody is thoroughly cleaning anything. Just look up at the air ducts, they are insanely dirty. That's the air being pumped directly on the members of the gym. Half the equipment is broken at any given time. They should shut down for a day and take magic erasers to everything.

While I appreciate 24-Hour Fitness being in Pacific Beach, I have to say it is very worn out and tired.

Virtually every piece of equipment, every room, every aspect about it, is worn down.

They truly.need to shut that place down for about 2 months and do a major, full-scale, ceiling to floor renovation.

I think the corporate side of 24 Hour Fitness is taking the gym members for granted there.

The workers there are great by the way.

I signed up for a free 3 day pass at this 24 hour fitness location. The email I got indicated to go to the self service kiosk to register. When I did that, the associate at the desk indicated that he would help.

He asked for ID and proof of CA residency. I said I just moved here, so no proof of residency. I also indicated that residency was not a requirement stated on the email (see attached).

He offered me a $30 option for a day pass - for a 24 Hour Fitness? And a monthly pass for $150. A no commitment month is $44

Clearly, he just didn’t want me to enter. I wish he wasn’t at the desk so that I just followed the self check-in instructions given in the email.

Update: someone called asking when I’m coming in. I told her what happened. She said oh yes you have to a resident and it’s the fine print of the email.

Not in the fine print. And here is how I responded to the email. This and Orange Theory are horrible regarding this.

What will it take ??

This makes a staggering 49 1 * reviews.

The reviews consistently applaud the staff , well for the most part , the reviews consistently complain about , poor equipment maintenance and cleaning issues.

So the response we all get is “ we have some work to do in the future”
Well when exactly is the future , next week, a month, so far 8 months…. I don’t believe the owner statement . If you care about your business and your members 1 bad 1* review is a wake up call.
This is shocking, let’s not forget this is Southern California , we expect better.

I considered bringing in my own mat to work on as the floor is disgustingly filthy.

My husband and I are going to vote with our feet and cancel our membership.

This could be such an amazing gym, it has great cross section of members all ages shapes and sizes and a really great atmosphere, something which is much harder to recreate.

Staff is great. General manager is
cool. And I know operations staff only has so much power. Some people criticize the conditions of the restroom. That said, that’s not on staff either. I have sensory issues, so between exercises I’ll dip into the bathroom pretty frequently just to give myself a sensory break. I’ve watched the staff detail the bathroom, get it all super tidy, and literally 30min later, people have strewn toilet paper, splashed (hopefully water), and peed all over the seats making it appear as though it hasn’t been cleaned even though it just was. Some of ya’ll are just disrespectful!!!

My big issue is equipment… Today I have counted a total of 13 machines (treadmills, stair masters, curl machine, hip thrust machine, leg press machine, etc…) fully out of order… Not to mention certain machines have certain weight ranges unavailable due to the switches being broken (like one of the two height-adjustable cable machines)… For someone who also has some mobility/shoulder issues, as well as balance impairment, and born with uneven shoulders, that needs the stability of the machines for certain exercises, this is frustrating. I moved over from Fitness West, partially due to the price deal of a year long membership, but moreso for the equipment.
I walk everywhere. This is the 24 Hr Fitness I can get to on foot in my schedule. It would be great if there was more priority to at least get the machines that there aren’t really alternative or double machines of fixed with more priority.

The thrust machine for instance has been out for weeks now… Same with a curl machine… I get the leg press machine because the break in it was the entire back coming off, which… happens… wear and tear and all, and that’s not just a simple fix… but fixing equipment just seems to be last priority.

Good morning,
The 24-Hour Fitness in Pacific Beach is in unacceptable condition. 24-Hour Fitness is a large chain, but it is clearly poorly managed. It’s hard to believe that no one has thought of hiring an industrial cleaning company to thoroughly clean the gym at least once a week, outside business hours.
While the membership fees might be relatively low, millions of people use the 24-Hour Fitness network. Cleanliness should be the absolute minimum standard to maintain, especially since managing the gym primarily involves upkeep and maintenance.
Thank you

THE ABANDONED GYM
I signed up for a membership here just to find out I was scammed, this gym is abandoned, there’s so many equipments that are out of service, the scale has the “out of service” sign forever, there’s not enough exercise mats and a lot of them are broken, I think the owner here simply don’t care and just abandoned the gym. I feel scammed, they talk you into signing up the membership but there’s no gym maintenance at all, it’s very disappointing and frustrating.
If you are looking for a gym, please go somewhere else.

★ 3

I signed up for a month-to-month membership at 24 Hour Fitness, and while it definitely has its ups and downs, I won’t be re-signing up when my membership expires.

First, the good stuff: The gym has a solid variety of equipment and, bonus, they actually play decent music. It's not a non-stop loop of gangster rap like the last gym I tried. The playlist is refreshingly varied, so you won’t feel like you’re training for a rap music video every time you step on the treadmill. Props for that.

Now, on to the not-so-good stuff: The biggest issue for me was the misleading hours. I joined thinking I’d be able to hit the gym 24/7, but turns out not all 24 Hour Fitness locations are actually open 24 hours. Who knew? Definitely felt like a bait-and-switch when I showed up at 10 PM and found the place locked up tighter than a drum. So, yeah, that was a bit of a letdown.

And then there’s the locker room situation. Let me just say: cleanliness is not a priority here. Every time I’ve used the restrooms, there have been clogged toilets, overflowing toilet paper, and floors that felt suspiciously sticky. The staff? Well, they spend most of their time behind the front desk, completely unaware that the locker rooms are slowly turning into a public health concern. I’ve yet to see anyone actually clean anything, which I think is a pretty basic expectation for a gym.

So, while I’ll give credit for the decent tunes and equipment, the lack of 24-hour access and the dirty locker rooms are dealbreakers for me. I won’t be sticking around for another month. Maybe if they cleaned up their act (literally), I’d reconsider. But for now, I’ll be heading somewhere where the toilets flush and the hours match the name.

In all honesty this place has gone to hell, never seen so many broken machines that can take months to be repaired. Broken/missing ceiling lights, not the most upkeep gym. Many years ago this gym was always on top of things. Not sure what happened but wish the best

This location averages being open only 16hrs a day. It should be called 16 Hour Fitness. It's only open 66% of the time its name suggests. Sounds like FALSE ADVERTISING to me.

This place was open 24hrs a day before Covid. Seems like they used Covid as an excuse to reduce business hours and never looked back. I'm sure it's much more profitable for them, but if they're going to change the hours of operation, then they should also change the name of the gym, as the old name no longer fits the new business model and is misleading and makes the business look unorganized and poorly structured; just reminds every customer of a time when it used to be a better gym that lived up to its name.

This gym should either change its name or change its hours, or just throw in the towel.

Hours posted are not accurate. Had I known I would not have joined. See attached photos for current hours. In addition to broken bathroom equipment there has been no hot water for a week.

Update.
-hot water is still broken months later. Homeless are having arguments in the bathrooms that they regularly leave human waste on the floor. Employees are always on their phones instead of cleaning and addressing issues

Place is dirty, equipment stays broken for months, its hot as a sauna during the summertime, the only area with AC is the restroom where you can catch the homeless having arguments, they raise ur rate 20% a year due to “inflation”, the club closes at 8-10 even tho its a 24/7 fitness, its often packed. I do not recommend this gym but it is useable if need be.

What a scam. The girl at the counter was clearly trying to sell without any skills. The guy offered me a trial, but she told me I had to pay for it. What a liar! I work out here off and on when I don't feel like driving to another better gym. As others all say, the equipment is in terrible shape, the place is dirty and too hot. It's crowded, but that's not really the gym's fault as anyone with a 24HF membership can use it.

doing this evaluation to see if the owner of this unit decides to look at this gym with care, the employees are always very friendly and smiling, but the gym? man!!!!!!! The worst part is, there are more treadmills that don't work than work, many stairs don't work either, broken equipment takes MONTHS to fix, everything is VERY old and noisy, there are lots of problems...in the heat it's harrowing to work outside because there isn't any windows or air conditioning, you literally cook inside this device! the lighting in the room is totally depressing, dark lights, dark environment, it's really a basement! and it is in the heart of Pacific Beach, a well located place, how can 24 hours be so bad in such a good place? I always ask myself this... it seems like the unit is abandoned, please guys, improve it, because if they open another gym on the other side of the street, I would definitely go there! I only keep using this one because it's close to my house

You can count on about half of all treadmills being broken at any given time. Today while running on one of the “working” ones, it completely shut off while I was running and the belt immediately stopped. Ending up hurting myself because of it. I don’t recommend going to this 24hr.

Edit: changing this from a 1 star to 3 star review because while I still think the equipment is pretty subpar, the manager called me pretty quickly after letting them know of the issue to make it right.

I live within walking distance, but I would much rather drive to the La Jolla or Balboa locations. The machines - from treadmills to weight machines - are constantly broken. Machines that don’t even have an “out of order” sign on them are broken. I tried to work out on the leg press machine a couple days ago, and it would make a bang sound and add ~40 pounds more every other rep. It’s becoming very dangerous how little this gym is maintained. I do see someone cleaning regularly, but the whole gym still feels filthy. Only one shower in the locker room has a curtain for privacy. On more than one occasion, there was a dog walking around freely while its owner was on the other side of the room. I tried to pause my membership a couple months ago for health reasons, and they tried to charge me monthly - which I’ve never experienced before in 8+ years of going to 24 Hour Fitness gyms.

I thought new management would help, but these issues have gotten progressively worse. No classes, no sauna, no management, no steam room, broken machines - can this even be considered a gym?

Great parking, good location. However, could we get some air in the place ?? The gym is located in the basement, no windows or doors. The air is always muggy, stinky and HOT !!!
Why not some massive floor fans that oscillate?? Why not keep the AC below 70?? Could the AC at least be turned on ? Or something, anything…. There needs to be air flow. It’s pretty gross. Other than that, the place is great !

- horrible service!!
We wanted to use the 3-day trial that we registered on their website but were denied. they asked us for proof of residency but when we tried to show them that they came up with another excuse of why we were not welcomed (at least it felt like that). It felt like they did not believe that we lived here just because we had an accent. For me, this is a perfect example of bad and unhelpful service.

Anthony and Cole, the sales/managers, have been super helpful and always greet me! They always smile and are very welcoming. If I ask them for a resistance band, I am always met with a smile and a quick action. I love the upstairs part of the gym, and I've finally felt comfortable enough to go to the downstairs part of the gym - I had nothing to worry about! There aren't windows downstairs, so I felt a bit claustrophobic at first, but the area is so spacious and when you go at off hours like 1 or 2 pm, it is not crowded at all and there is so much space to move around - I almost never have to wait for a machine. It is clean, the machines work well and are relatively new, and I love the upstairs part so much. Free parking is really nice too!

I could not disagree with Casey & Jamie as they were on point with everything they said. The only other two cents I'll add to their review is that it appears the gym staff does not check their equipment. This machine was broken about a month ago (2nd to last time I was at this gym) & it's still broken. Solutions :
1) Move to a single level building (1211 Garnet) OR (as already complained about it via phone) increase the AC.
2) Update the weight lifting equipment (red & white machines) & add some.
3) Cardio (for guests): do it outside unless it's raining & just come in to do strength training.

I’ve been coming here for 2 years and it’s been wonderful but ever since Crunch closed down the street, this 24 Hr has had a substantial increase in customers but not enough equipment (specifically ones with weights) to accommodate more people in the gym. And the fact that it’s called 24 hour and is only open until 10 pm (earlier on some days) is kind of ridiculous.

Note to management: Please either add more equipment or increase the hours.

I’ve been coming here for years, and tbh this is the first time I’ve felt compelled to leave a review. Many of the people that work at the front desk have no sense of hospitality at all, I have better customer service then them as I am the one who says hi, good morning, and goodbye and so many of them give me a blank dead stare.

I used to work at a 24 when I was in college, as far as I was aware, the job is to check, greet, and welcome people in/out, get to know the people that workout at the gym, and most certainly not to make people feel uncomfortable, not acknowledge people, and stand around at the front desk like it’s a popularity contest.

There's no doors or curtains on the showers. Only the handicap shower had a curtain. I probably won't be coming back because of that. The front desk was friendly though, and there was a good selection of equipment.

Pros: nicely lit, ventilated and up to now air quality is good enough to do cardio workouts with circulation. A good amount of equipment, but I saw one leg press and the precore stretch machine is lacking adequate safety straps.
Cons: the spa area is dirty and allows fully dressed men and women to enter the sauna and dry areas. Yep, tennis shoes, street shoes, shorts and full length pants. If you’re looking for a soothing, quiet, inhaling experience, this is not the place. There is a sign placed outside the spa and saunas that require appropriate bathing attire. However, there is no oversight or enforcement. It’s a shame. Dirty shoes, sweaty workout clothes, and stinky perspiration odor kill the experience. I haven’t seen any evidence of regular hygiene methods.
