I had a very disappointing and humiliating experience at this location. I signed up online for the 3-day free trial and went to the Balboa gym fully prepared — in my workout clothes and with my gym bag. However, the staff refused to let me in, claiming they would not honor the trial because the location is “newly opened.”

I was turned away at the door even though I had a valid trial pass. This was extremely embarrassing and unprofessional. No one offered help, no explanation, and no solution.

If the free trial is not accepted here, it should clearly be stated online. This experience made me feel disrespected and unwelcome. Very disappointing.

Changing my review to a five now because they are doing major improvements on the gym and they have been improving their cleanliness. Some other reviews report broken equipment, but honestly, that is almost never the case. I don’t know what they are looking at. The Pacific Beach location has way more broken equipment. In fact, I can’t remember anything other than cardio being broken and that’s only occasionally. They do need a few more machines, but hopefully with this upgrade, we are getting that

This gym has so much potential. Huge space, high ceilings, warehouse feel, 10 lifting platforms. Not a bad crowd, gym etiquette is better than most other gyms I've been to. Most times weights are reracked in the proper place and people are nice if you ask them about using equipment around them/their platform. Most ppl take their sessions seriously enough, and not diddling around for the most part. Maybe depends on the time of day though.

But there needs to be more duplicates of machines to reduce wait times. Like quad extension machines and abductors. It's also extremely dirty and the employees are often talking at the front rather than restocking paper towels, or cleaning the giant dust balls forming around the machines. The cleaning spray bottles are often broken too. Like... management, y'all gotta do something.

This gym is less than mediocre in regard to its cleanliness, gym culture, and above all else, the staff of course. Paper towel dispensers and disinfectant spray bottles are consistently empty, and they are often in a state of disrepair.
I asked an evening clerk there once if he was the only staff member on duty because there was a need to restock the items mentioned, and that I was having to walk across the entire gym to the one dispenser that had paper towels in it, and that it was an imposition.
He became quite hostile and aggressive towards me and has been ever since. The fellow is a bearded guy of dark tan skin that works nights. I avoid him because I don't care for negativity, aggression, or violence in a place where I go to clear my mind and seek a health focused environment.
Some staff parade around the gym shirtless as do some patrons and many walk around bare foot or in only socks, and if memory serves, that is against gym dress code policy.
Members carry large gym bags on the floor often and this is not enforced as an obvious safety hazard by gym staff.
One grave issue and gym deficiency is the complete lack of clean, cold-water dispensing, and functional drinking fountains at this gym. At this time there is only one working scuttlebutt, and it is always unclean as well as notably unfiltered as the taste of the water dispensed there is terrible, and it is always warm if not room temperature at best.
The locker room and restroom facilities are in terrible state and absolutely unhygienic.
If the management and administration team at this location are looking to provide a less-than-optimal gym experience, than they have accomplished it in stride and I commend them.
The 24-Hour Fitness organization has consistently been falling in quality and service for many years now. Price is not an issue. Charge more and provide a better experience, more well trained and service-oriented staff that is professional and courteous, and clean facilities.

Gym is really gross, paper towel stations are always out and the women’s bathroom is disgusting and always out of toilet paper. I watched a transient man get in the jacuzzi in his boxers, take off his boxers and wash them with the jets. He also backed his behind up to the jet to wash that too. Other people were in there 😭 The pool looks like they clean it monthly, maybe. Swimming in there and showering after, chlorine was still wreaking off of my body, even after a second shower at home. I just wanted to let you guys know that the night a few months ago I was set up and about to go man down and somebody stole my cell phone and I am so sorry for having the anxiety attack. I am super sane, trustworthy and overall great person and love 24 but was recovering from a horrible car accident and it was my first day back and I got set up unfortunately and am so sorry for ever touching the shirt in the sauna or the towel but I was about to faint and was set up by bad people and couldn’t find my locker or clothes and am so sorry but I am innocent and trustworthy and it was a huge misunderstanding. The same blonde salesperson who charged me $311 or something for the membership I’m pretty sure screwed me and now I can’t even go to any 24 and everyone needs to know I am not crazy or shady or bad whatsoever they just wanted to screw me over because 24 is one of my most useful places to go. Gym is overpacked, have people waiting for you at every machine asking if you’re done with it. No paper towels to clean machines have to walk to the other side of the gym just to get some supplies. Lot of the negative reviews are true, seen people sleeping in the gym that basically look homeless. I would be surprised is all the dumbbells were returned to the racks that the racks would be 2/3 full. Disgusting, I got approved for a 3 day trial because I’m not going to pay for a membership I will regret and thank God I didn’t. I came and parking was horrible, the parking lot REEKS of piss everywhere it’s disgusting. I came up to the front desk, didn’t get greeted and rejected me doing my 3 day trial because of my out of state license, and I’m in the military. Not once did I see that on the trial agreement but I saved myself the time because this location looks run down. I drove 25 mins just to get turned away. Here I come LA Fitness or CHUZE

This gym has excellent teachers for group classes like Staffi, Sarah, Emily, and Brooks. However, it is managed terribly! The showers are dirty and lack shower gel, the black floor mat smells, it's hard to find a usable locker, the one-time-use lockers are permanently occupied, and below photo was taken over two months.

When I stated going to this gym it was great 5 stars everything was in good working conditions, they even had plastic bags in the shower so you can put your dirty clothing inside , everything was spotless clean , even the employees very friendly from the moment you step to the gym it was very motivating arrive to a gym where you can hear and see a full class working out , trainers super helpful, I even saw a trainer holding an elderly woman hand to walk , and that said a lot about that trainer , , but now there’s nothing like that , I’m just going to say that they have both racquetball rooms closed for almost half a year , , so is not the worst gym, but I will give them the benefit of the doubt, and like they said , its corporate that is making those decisions heheh

Majority of People who come to this gym are very disrespectful. They are dirty, not follow the rules (i.g not rinsing before enter swimming pool, hot tub, loitering every where).

This is not this facility fault! Gyms staffs are friendly and professional.

Dishonest criminal behavior. DO NOT come here. They autorenewed my sister's membership years later even after my sister become disabled.Never even sent me the 419 dollar receipt! Assured me they would take care of it when GM returned from vacation. That was fabricated to delay. This is the second negative review I have written in my entire life. My family member was severely injured after doing personal training here. We are now being charged for a membership of a disabled person (my sister has a handicap sticker). 24 Hour Fitness Balboa Ave is a great gym, I mostly went to the swimming pool, I learned how to swim in 2 and 1/2 Weeks. Self-taught but I mostly asked for a advice from the other swimmers. Big thanks to Jared and Priscilla! For taking the time to give me some advice on how to swim better. The staff here were also incredibly helpful and very understanding. This is by far the most friendliest and helpful gym I've been to. Good atmosphere and polite gym 🏋️‍♂️ 💪 people.

Previously, I had a two-year contract with no annual fee. Therefore, when I renewed it again, I found my annual fee was charged in the second year. I might not have negotiated earlier. In the second year, I was charged a yearly fee, which I addressed to a manager, who might be weak to deal with "a master man" who rejected it. I ended up paying more than I expected per year. Ahh. I might have minimum skills in negotiations and "professionalism" of the management skills, I have to reconsider whether or not I'll want to renew my membership next year.

Poor Experience at Balboa Gym Location

Yesterday, my husband and I visited the Balboa gym with a 3-day guest pass we had registered for online. We were genuinely interested in joining and wanted to explore the amenities before committing to a membership. A tall, blonde young man assisted us at the front desk. However, he informed us that because there was a record of me having visited the gym before, we were not eligible for the 3-day pass.

While I had been to the gym a few times in the past, I had only used a few machines and had never explored the full range of amenities. My husband had never visited this location at all. Our main interest this time was to try the pool and sauna, as we’ve recently taken up swimming as part of our fitness routine.

Unfortunately, the staff member was unnecessarily rude and dismissive. Instead of helping us find a solution or showing any interest in welcoming us as potential new members, his attitude was hostile and unprofessional.

Feeling uncomfortable, we decided to visit the La Jolla location instead—and the contrast in customer service was striking. We were warmly welcomed, given a full tour of the facilities, and even offered a complimentary training session. Thanks to that positive experience, we decided to purchase a full-year membership on the spot and even signed up for personal training sessions, paying everything in advance.

It’s unfortunate, because the Clairemont location is much closer to our home. But due to the poor treatment we received at Balboa, we are now willing to travel farther just to be treated with the respect and professionalism every potential member deserves.

Today’s inspiration for writing this review was seeing a woman kick out all the crumbled globs of trash from the bathroom stalls into one pile. It’s that bad patrons are piling the garbage. Please hire an entire cleaning team. Especially for bathrooms/locker rooms and sauna.

Cons: elliptical equipments needs updates, broken and not many are calibrated, old and doesn’t function properly. Sauna is co-op so it’s small and stinks. Joined a week ago and noticed it’s really dirty all the time, the bathroom always smells rotten and the napkins are always empty so everyone is unable to clean up the machines after use. I asked the front desk who’s responsible for filling the napkins because it seems like they just wait for the end of the day to fill. Several employees just sitting on their phone not addressing it. Poorly managed in the evening unfortunately. I was a health inspector and this facility should not be passing. Be careful with MRSA and ring worm!!

I always love coming home to this gym best machines. Also one of the workers Gigi is seriously the best part of my gym experience! She’s always so welcoming, friendly, and professional every time I walk in. Her energy is super positive and she makes everyone feel comfortable and cared for. You can tell she genuinely enjoys helping people and making the gym a great place to be. Love her!!

Best gym in San Diego! Been to many gyms around throughout the years and by far this one is top tier! Great location, great equipment, clean and presentable. Staff is also very charismatic and professional! Once I joined Mr. Taylor took initiative and gave me a courtesy tour and gave a very warming welcome! Past gyms didn’t even come close to the superb client experience I have every time!

The General Manager Mr. Snook, also introduced himself, such a nice gentleman! He was very attentive and polite throughout the whole interaction and was very genuine as well. Both of these gentlemen really are pleasant to speak with and I fondly recommend anyone who comes to this gym to pay them a visit!

I am more than pleased with my new membership and gym, don’t think I’ll be heading elsewhere. This gym has it all! Plus it’s a 24/7 gym which is extremely convenient! I also urge 24HR fitness to hire more people like Mr. Snook and Mr. Taylor. I don’t do much reviews but these good men and I say again, these good men deserve all the recognition for their welcoming personalities!

Night shift front desk is a joke. The guy with clipped hair is rude and dismissively. I understand it’s night time so it’s more lax but this guy is just plainly rude. Doesn’t greet you, doesn’t answer questions. All he does is chitchatting with his buds.

Poor customer service. Called to ask how late they were open and the person said "regular hours" and immediately hung up. The website and google each have different hours listed, so which one is the correct "regular hours"? If you are going to immediately hang up, at least say whether it is 9pm or 24 hours instead of "regular hours" and keep me guessing as to which listing has the correct regular hours.

The trainer they have Justin is their golden ticket because they are outgoing and has a great charisma in helping you achieve your goal in targeting any areas you will like to improve on or overall help you get a great workout that your legs turn into jelly. The only reason I am giving two stars is for Justin because aint no way would i last long to even be inside this specific 24 hour fitness. I have no idea why still allow this disgusting environment they have because you might as well wear a gas mask for how horrible their bathrooms are. You best hold it in or relief yourself at home so you wont use their bathrooms that I have not seen or smelled better odor to show any attempt in improvement.

You can slowly see some improvement in the bathrooms but the smell still aint it. I know bathrooms can't smell like flowers but at least put more effort figuring out ways to improve even more. I may exaggerate in my review about the gas mask but I do speak some truth. Its bad business if u cannot sustain a clean environment.

The only reason this place still deserve any rating is thanks to Justin and Josh ..they keep the atmosphere alive. Please clean the locker rooms !! The odor is so bad sometimes it’s nauseating. It’s kinda sad that customers have to beg for a clean ventilated gym. .. at this point it’s not worth the investment

It's been so long since I've been with 24 hour fitness, I was hesitant to sign back up, but I visited the balboa location and was sold, it's so clean, plenty of equipment, and so close to my home, and Taylor was amazing, he's one of the managers and he made sign up easy, no hidden fees, everything was exactly what he told us. If you plan on signing up at balboa, ask for Taylor he was honestly great and can answer any questions you have.
