Came here to give an honest review. Upon reading other people's review, it seems that most people who gave positive review were NEW so I am not sure if they were coerced to do it or what. I don't trust it.

I tried it for 3 days while in town. The Pakistani looking manager gave me weird vibes -- overly trying to please me showing the facility but had a very aggressive demeanor -- the way he spoke, the way he looked intensely -- looked like he had too much caffeine or something in his body. I witnessed him constantly attacking the workers and talking down to other coaches in front of me which I thought was not cool.

CrossFit class has 2 people at most and the coach named Nick was a little joke. Soft spoken and stared at the phone or had a blank stare most of the time.

Swimming pool was clean and warm and very inviting! Most equipments and machines are outdated.

Nice personnel, always helpful, great classes most included, swimming pool warm and always available. Manager very nice and ready to accommodate your needs. Great facility with many different rooms in size and a big variety of equipment. Clean facility, locker room large and comfortable. I’ve been going to this gym for over 4 years and it improves all the time, I don’t see myself in a different place. Also all the amenities we have available like private hot tub and common hot tub, sauna, drinks available for purchase.

Alameda Fitness and Spa has recently been really stepping up and supporting the Bay Area racquetball community in many ways while others are cutting back on courts by converting them to other uses - check it out!

AN,

For the past six years, I have been a member of Alameda Fitness and Spa. I am writing to express my appreciation for the significant improvements I've witnessed since the new management team took over.

The facility is now exceptionally well-maintained, and the staff is both larger and considerably more friendly and approachable. I've been particularly impressed by the management's responsiveness to member feedback. The recent initiatives, such as the establishment of new racquetball leagues and the proactive efforts to expand court availability without disrupting existing programs, are testaments to this commitment. The substantial increase in the variety and frequency of classes offered further enhances the overall member experience.

These positive changes have dramatically improved my experience at Alameda Fitness and Spa, and I wanted to take this opportunity to express my gratitude.

Sincerely,

sieu thai

I’ve been coming to this club for years and the current staff and management are great! I don’t use all the amenities available to me since I basically use the club for the racquetball courts. The men’s locker room is great as I use the showers, steam room, and jacuzzi. Thanks to the staff and management for making this a great place to workout ! 👍🏽

An overall great experience working out in this gym. The facility is constantly clean and well-maintained, and it has everything you need, from free weights and cardio machines to dedicated stretching and functional training areas.
The staff is polite, professional, and always prepared to offer help. The environment is pleasant and never intimidating which is a great plus whether you're a beginner or an experienced athlete.
Highly recommended for anyone wanting to take their health and fitness seriously.

I have been going to this gym for almost three years now. Everything has been satisfactory. I have not experienced any of the crossfit or swimming lessons so I can't guarantee the quality of those specific programs, but overall, my experience with the gym's facilities and staff has been positive. My only warning about this place is that if you are only using the gym equipment and none of the other parts of the facility it might be slightly pricey.

Alameda Fitness & Spa Review

I have had a long history & experience with this club dating back to the previous ownership (MSAC) and now AFS.

Thru the years I’ve seen this club being very very successful and then knocked down like most other clubs by Covid…
All that said, I feel that I am keenly aware of some of the hurdles and growing pains that AFS (or any business) has to face and overcome with new ownership.

Fast forward,
I am now here to set the record straight and say, along with the other members that I routinely work out with, I have personally witnessed & experienced a HUGE transformation for the best in this club!
I feel & see that their efforts are now paying off!
The present staffing is so courteous, friendly and gracious that you cannot help but feel welcome - a BIG shout out to Fernando at the front desk he’s extremely helpful & professional!

And in all honesty, in the very beginning I had disagreement with the manager Mr. Fox. But now that I have had time to witness his level of commitment towards not just improving the club but more importantly, creating a very positive & healthy environment for members & guests alike to feel welcomed & free to enjoy our workouts!
Thank you Alameda Fitness & Spa staff & Mr. Fox!

Gratefully,
Belo

Please do not support this gym. AFNS is still billing my credit card despite my membership being canceled.

The CrossFit community here was destroyed by the General Manager and it appears they are trying to cover their losses by fraudulently charging members.

Absolutely LOVE this gym! There is a new manager that is breathing new life into the place. Slowly but surely they are upgrading the equipment (more booty machines please). The front desk are super friendly and helpful and an overall very positive atmosphere. Only complaint is the women that congregate in the locker room talking super loud. Other than that....no complaints.

I joined the gym in April 2025, excited by its vibrant GrossFit community and talented coaches. Unfortunately, my experience was marred by the unprofessional behavior of the general manager. His aggressive and unpredictable conduct, often directed at female members and staff, created a tense and unwelcoming environment. In just a few weeks, I witnessed him berate members publicly and make inappropriate comments, including personal remarks about my physique that left me deeply uncomfortable.

This behavior has driven away multiple coaches and members, fracturing the gym’s once-strong community. After raising concerns through proper channels, I faced retaliation, including being barred from the facility. The manager’s actions, including sexist behavior and baseless bans, don’t align with CrossFit’s values of inclusivity and integrity. It’s heartbreaking to see such a great gym suffer under poor leadership. I hope management addresses these issues to restore Island Grit’s reputation, but I can’t recommend it in its current state.

While the CrossFit coaches and fellow athletes are exceptional, the management of AFNS - specifically the general manager himself - is deeply unprofessional and his lack of leadership erodes any sense of community. He creates an atmosphere of distrust and division. Instead of taking accountability for issues within the facility, he deflects blame and fosters a toxic environment. It is not a welcoming place.

As a CrossFit athlete of 8+ years, I’ve been part of many gyms and communities - and this is by far the most disappointing experience I’ve ever had. I deeply regret signing up for a 6-month membership - do not make the same mistake. I can no longer support this gym or recommend it to others.

Love this gym!! I recently re-joined after a break and I'm SO GLAD Im back. I was a member a few years ago and it got a little weird for awhile during the ownership/management change, but they have worked out the kinks and it's now a well run, clean, inviting space to work out. Plenty of squat racks & bench press stations and I love the classic bodybuilding machines.
As a visibly queer athlete, I have always felt welcome by staff and the vast majority of the members, which is really important to me, especially with everything going on right now. My partner and I go 5 times a week to workout (mostly Powerlifting and Bodybuilding + some cardio) and sometimes just pop in during the slower hours just to use the hot tubs for some peaceful down time and have always been met with respect and friendly conversation.
Management is very receptive and responsive to issues and takes feedback seriously. Great features for the price you pay. All around good spot!

My father used to be a member of this gym when he was alive, back in the 80's and early 90's, before passing away in 2001. I was a member for a short period of time after I graduated from High School in 98.

I came back in September of 2019, and have been a member since. There has been remodeling in the lockers and showers.

In recent years, they converted one of the studios across from crossfit into a multi room, where there are now 5 racks where you can either use as bench, or for squats. There is a dedicated spot just for deadlifts. In the past there wasn't even that. Only two squat racks in the leg room (free weights), which one of racks has been disposed of since, and no deadlift platform. So this was an improvement from feedback from members, such as myself at the time.

In recent months, a hip thrust machine was added.

*This used to be the cycling room for cardio, prior to the pandemic of 2020.

**It might be best to find a seperate studio for the Deadlifts now. It is getting crowded in there now.

Enjoying my time here, since I do actually live in Alameda, for over 40 years.

Looking forward to more pumping iron here.

My unequivocal recommendation. The facility is well-run, well-maintained and truly has a community 'feel'. The staff members are well-trained and friendly. Kudos to the gym manager for his diligence, attention to detail and professionalism, who, as a bonus, is an athlete with a degree in physical fitness. The emphasis is on safe strategies and motivation.

The pool is fastidiously kept up and the pool manager is a former competitive swimmer with a degree in physical fitness. There is a veritable plethora of workout equipment with every conceivable machine from resistance to endurance. Large parking shared with a children's swim center. It is safe.

After workout amenities include spas, steamers, saunas and showers all of which are cleaned in real time by the hour. There is full time staff dedicated to this. Very satisfying indeed.

It is worth every penny and competitively priced at that!

I have been coming here since the 1970s
I moved away after being a member for about 10 or 15 years

Now back from living in Hawaii

I wanted to the best club I could find
And was surprised to see the club is still here

But now it’s better than that ever!!!

A new manager!!
And this manager is great!
His name is Fox
And I must say that he is wise as a fox
He’s turned this Club around it’s much cleaner
The staff is much more diversified
It seems that the members are also pleased about their positive changes that have occurred!!

I would give this club a five star

I was born on this Island 1954

So I take pride in an establishment that’s been here for a long time Like me

This used to be a great gym on the island but it I can no longer support this gym and the decline it’s been on. I have been a long time member since 2013 but have recently decided to discontinue my membership and found a new gym. I feel like the owners do not value its members. And when I say this I mean that they don’t take the feedback from members and reinvest it back into the gym to improve quality of life for members who pay monthly for their membership. Instead they have decided cut a lot corners to cut down on costs and create programs that are non related to members. They discontinued towel service which used to be great since you’re paying a “premium” to have certain features that a spa would have. There have been issues with equipment. Since most of the equipment is old. They tend to brake down often and have not been replaced or fixed within a timely manner. They have Wi-Fi available for members that doesn’t work causing equipment that uses Wi-Fi to serve as useless. They used to have music playing throughout the gym but since it stopped working they never decided to get it fix (except in CrossFit), so if you forgot your headphones or they’re dead, you’ll be working out in silence. The overall atmosphere of this gym feels lifeless and depressing regardless of what hours you go. Along with minor issues there are mirrors that are broken that don’t get replaced for months and dumbbells that have been missing but never return or get replaced.

MANAGEMENT: The previous GM was great and would be very welcoming to all members, visitors and staff. However recently, ever since the previous GM decided to leave (and I don’t blame her) They hired a so called “influencer” to take on her role. Since he’s been working there, long time staff members (8+ years) who worked there have decided to quit because they cannot work with him. I typically also heard the GM being aggressive with front desk staff if they do not agree with him, while talking behind their backs in his office when passing by. His actions do not represent what being a manager is. He is not very unprofessional, lacks leadership and is not suitable for the position.

OVERALL: These issues have caused a lot of members to quit. As of right now I DO NOT recommend this gym due to it being way overpriced for what you get. This gym will leave you disappointed and having you questioning whether you made the right decision or not. Health is your wealth and I would highly recommend getting a membership elsewhere where you are valued because that the end of the day it’s an investment on yourself.

PROS: Eduardo’s Zumba (members and nonmembers enjoy his class), They have an indoor pool, a sauna, steam room, and jacuzzi in the locker rooms. That’s it.

Note: Not sure how often things get cleaned anymore since there is no overnight cleaning staff which was cut and never got replaced and the janitors who maintained it during the business hours have recently quit. This might change, but I would stay far away from this gym for now.

Was enjoying going here until I tried to cancel. Manager said I wouldn't be charged anymore, yet I was charged again after cancelling. When I went to talk to him, he said it's too late, and that it was already processed. I said this was unfair, and he said he would give me a refund. Never received a refund, and was left with no choice but to resolve it with my credit card company to keep them from illegally charging me. This is a bad business practice; the place is probably going to go under because it is a old run down facility and they are desperate to retain clients and think they will do so by refusing cancellations.

Great gym with many workout rooms, pool, sauna, and the kindest staff... but their real differential are Eduardo's classes! I've been in many different gyms in the US and abroad, and his classes are the best gym classes I've experienced. If you want a REAL cardio workout, his Cardio Orbit class is it! This class makes me sweat like never before, elevates my heart rate and gives me more sore muscles than some weight lifting sessions! And not to mention, Eduardo has such a charismatic and energetic presence! I'm so glad I found this gym and Eduardo!

I had such a pleasant experience here. There is a new manager, Fox, and he was very kind and helpful. I attended the best Zumba class here, and potentially the best fitness class I've ever been to with Eduardo (Zumba/latin hip hop instructor). The locker rooms are cozy too, there's even a hot tub in there! They have a really large studio mirror room, and a second smaller one, but there are plenty of spaces to do individual workouts. I met some very kind and fun people at this gym!

My wife and I joined recently. This facility has everything you need and more. I am really surprised that the ratings are not at 5 stars. The staff is very nice and welcoming.. always a warm interaction and super helpful. They offer a ton of aerobic, yoga, dance, etc. classes free with membership. If you join make sure to take one of Eduardos classes... he is a real pro and he really motivates you to push yourself. The locker rooms have sauna, steam room, and a hottub. Another hot tub is near the pool. They have multiple rooms with really great equipment. The place is always clean and stuff is all working..including the really cold water fountains. This place is a gem. If you get a chance to try it out don't hesitate!!

When I first joined, I like the gym but that didn't last. I was going to the gym every other days. However, the High School staff wasn't nice to members. They have the power to kick members out for any 2 reasons they find or make up to kick anyone out of the club. That is too much power for High School kids to have being able to kick anyone out if they feel like it. "I can kick you out because I can" attitude. When are members afraid of the High School kids threaten to kick people out? Too much power and egos for the High School kids who work there who has no compassion for anyone. They get a taste of power early so they abuse it for their own satisfaction. They can kick anyone out for just looking at them wrong? Where in this world that we allow High School kids to abuse their power at 18?///

I never really had a complaint until recently.

1. They recently hired a new GM and he is VERY HOSTILE ! He has only been here for 2 week and for the past 2 weeks, all he has been doing is yelling at the front desk employees to do more, or find something to do, or that they need to be doing something constantly all the time. He is either yelling at them or complaining about them on phone in his office which is VERY unprofessional. I once saw him yelled at the employee because he told him to make the washing machine go faster!? Like how do you make a washing machine go faster? If you call him out on it or give him constructive feedback, HE WILL NOT TAKE IT WELL AND ARGUE BACK, his name is Fox! I love the FD employees & the custodians here, they are like family and are so friendly, it hurts to see the GM yell at them like that. The old GM Camille was so nice and treated them like family as well.

2. The locker rooms could be a bit cleaner, the jacuzi is super good, it does take a bit to get the shower waters warm. Lots of lockers to choose from , just bring your own lock. You do have to bring your own towel, which sucks. Hope that they could do towel service again.

3. The half court for basketball is a bit dirty, hope that they could clean the basketball backboard.

4. Lots of amenities! If I get bored, I can go to the gym and shoot some hoops, play badminton, and ask for boxing gloves, all provided at the front desk!

5. Lots of equipment! although some are a bit rusty.

6. Very spacious, but can get busy during peak hours.

As someone who has been coming to the gym for 2-3 , it's a good gym with GREAT potential! Just terrible management.

I mostly go for the pool and hot tub.

Women’s locker room could be a little cleaner. Often at the end of the day there is no soap in dispensers. no towel rental.

Staff is friendly, instructors seem to know what they’re doing.

Wish they were open till 10 on weeknights. and offered more yoga or tai chi classes, especially on weekends

The showers waste tons of water!!! It sometimes takes several minutes for warm water to come through.

Just a friendly ⚠️ warning*potential danger up ahead⚠️ I believe I've been discriminated against severely based on my race/gender & disability status. My membership got cancelled because the manager "doesn't want me to renew" I was always noticing the staff seemed to hover and get in the way of me enjoying the amenities. So glad other places are available to visit. Horrible staff caused me to feel as if they don't like/ are looking down on a POC. I'm traveling and needed a place to do my pt online work and bathe and they were a terrible hassle to be around and made me feel unsafe. Wish I'd never went here in the first place⚠️

I’ve been a member of this gym for many years-

I joined for the pool, the only indoor heated pool and Alameda.

It’s fairly clean members and employees are pretty friendly and fairly respectable.

This place has had many changes, over the years, after Covid it became under new management and ownership-
So of course, the gym membership and fees have changed.

I saw a lot of mixed reviews and thought I would leave my own point of view.

They do have a lot of free classes included with your membership.

Some downfalls:
Yes,
Their equipment is somewhat old but it’s usable. Wish they would hire more or better housekeeping, employees, to keep the gym / locker room cleaner- It’s not filthy, but a little more disinfecting in the locker rooms. Would not hurt. since Covid the hours have changed a little disappointed with that.

I do like the dry sauna, and a steam room and a private hot tub in the locker rooms aside from the public hot tub near the swimming pool area.

Overall, it’s okay! This Gym it’s not bad.
I have visited other gyms around the area, not as clean, not much equipment and not indoor heated swimming pools.

I use the pool the most and LOVE Michelle's aqua classes. I also take as many of Michelle's other classes as possible which are popular so they are not in danger of being cancelled but...new instructors are always in danger of being cancelled if they don't have more than 10 people in the class. One of my favorite classes was canceled this week because she could not guarantee 10 people per class but the gym does not advertise the classes. They say that they post on Facebook and Instagram but they don't. They leave it up to the instructors. Why! It is a gym, they should advertise. They don't want to spend the money to market. Kamisha's class was so fun and a breath of fresh air at theIf there was another pool that I could join close by I would leave Alameda family Fitness.

I highly recommend Alameda Fitness & Spa for anyone looking for a top-notch gym experience. From the moment my partner and I walked in, I knew I had made the right choice.

The Crossfit group at Alameda Fitness & Spa has been so much fun. Kiko and the other trainers are knowledgeable and encouraging, pushing me to reach my limits and achieve my fitness goals. I love the sense of community and camaraderie that comes with working out in a group setting.

In addition to the great Crossfit program, this gym offers a wide range of boxing equipment and cardio machines. Whether I want to work on my punches or get my heart rate up on the treadmill, there are plenty of options available. I never have to wait for a machine, which is a huge plus.

The membership team at Alameda Fitness & Spa deserves a special mention. Natasha and Camille have been absolutely amazing. They are friendly, helpful, and always willing to go the extra mile to ensure a positive experience for their members. They took the time to explain the different membership options, including the option to prepay or sign a contract, and helped us choose the best option for me and my partner.

Overall, I can't say enough good things about Alameda Fitness & Spa. The facility, the equipment, the classes, and the staff all contribute to an exceptional gym experience. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned fitness enthusiast, this gym has something for everyone. I highly recommend giving it a try - you won't be disappointed.

They quit doing towels so being your own, they got rid of the swim suit-dryer in the ladies room (men still get one). Only one shower in the ladies room gets warm while the others stay cool-cold; there's usually someone in there or waiting for you if you do use the warm one.

The edges around the hot tub are slimy and the hot tub gets smelly sometimes. Sometimes they blast music in the pool room and regularly have 1 / 6 lanes reserved. The pool is often crowded so you may not get to swim.

It does have steam room and sauna in each male and female locker rooms, plus hot tub. Free wifi. Equipment is generally fine enough.

They do not allow you to cancel and get your prorated refund by the terms in the contract (meaning the hassle and hoops of small claims court) so be careful if you do decide to go here.

The gym is okay (very dark) n VERY old machines. I feel like people didn't get how to manage it well, tho. Unfortunately, it's the only gym with a clean pool around. The front desk has only teenagers that are not trained to work with costumers. They got some unnecessary sassy rules and not very respectful way of talking/showing it to the customers. Hours are very bad, especially during weekends. They always have promotions for a year, which show they do need more customers, but when they get new ones, I don't think they got a plan to make them be welcomed. Still considering keeping my membership since every time I go, I get more descoraged to go back. On Planet Fitness (where I pay 10$ a month) I always feel welcomed and they create an amazing environment to workout.

This facility was recently bought by a new local owner. He has retained some of the old staff. They are just beginning to bring back some classes. There is still no towel service, but an employee promised towels were in the works and will return. This was once a raquetball club which morphed into a full gym. There is an indoor pool, many weight rooms, lots of equipment, two studios for classes and changing rooms for men, women and families. There is a basketball half court and rooms for ping pong play and raquetball.
