Alex is a Castro gym that feels like home. They have recently made several capital improvements and upgraded to new, state of the art equipment. We will not stray! We love Alex Fitness!

It’s rare to find a family-owned gym that’s both well-maintained and fully equipped with everything you need. The stuff is friendly and available. A gem in the Castro neighborhood of SF!

If you want to actually work out in the Castro, this is the place. If you want to be SEEN working out in the Castro, go to SF Fitness.

(Google's asking me to update this, but this still stands true.)

Lots of good new equipment has been added very recently. However, the cost is quite high at $118/4 weeks and the gym can get very overcrowded.

The big sell is the staff who give the gym a very welcoming and chill environment, which is rare for SF.

Fantastic little gym with a huge variety of equipment that made me excited like a kid. It’s got your standard bodybuilding stuff as well an entire functional area that’s decent for CrossFit etc. I would love to see rings there. Lots of new equipment too and everything is tidy and well maintained👌
Was nice to see hip thrust machine that’s rare to come across. ClassPass drop in is very affordable at ~$15
The one downside is that the ceiling is low enough that you can't do muscle-ups.

I loved using Alex Fitness while I was in SF for my week visit - they are extremely well-equipped despite being a small-sized gym. They were kind enough to let me use the gym even when I accidentally went the day after my pass expired. Thank you!

I met with Dmitry for personal training, and he was great—very knowledgeable and helpful! The gym itself has a great selection of equipment. I came during the day and is rarely crowded, making it easy to get in a good workout without waiting. The gym is going through renovation and have added new equipments which is exciting. Plus, the location is convenient with easy access. Highly recommend!

I rarely gush over a place in a google review that doesnt serve Amazing Food or is a hotel in front a beach but here goes. I joined Alex Fitness in early March 2020, just before the pandemic and have loved it so much I stayed for 4 years now. I enjoyed that AlexFitness is a family-owned gym, led by Olga and her team, offers a welcoming and supportive atmosphere that's hard to find elsewhere in the area. Not only is the pricing more affordable than SF Fitness or Live Fit nearby, but the quality of the equipment and the less crowded space make for a relaxed workout environment without some of the more distracting and more disruptive gym behavior that I experienced at a lot of packed Corporate gyms in the area.

The machines are good quality and well-maintained, the place is very clean, providing everything needed for a solid workout. Although I haven't used the personal trainers myself, I've did observe them to be very professional with their clients.

A big added bonus, the location is fantastic – right on Market in the Castro, making it super convenient. I cant reccomend Alex Fitness enough this is the spot.

After several years as a member of Alex Fitness Gym, I decided to explore the possibility of hiring a personal trainer for the first time.
I selected a few potential candidates featured on the gym website and, before scheduling an in-person consultation, contacted them via email to inquire about their certifications, certification acquisition dates, tenure at the gym, prior work experience, pricing, and availability.
Given my limited knowledge of the Certified Personal Trainers' fitness domain, I began gathering information from their responses.
To my surprise, this process uncovered a questionable validity in the qualification presented by one of the gym's acclaimed “Certified" Personal Trainers, a situation that Alex Fitness gym unprofessionally established and continues to endorse.
Understandably, legitimate organizations meticulously adhere to stringent standards to uphold the credibility and authenticity of their certifications.
This involves implementing rigorous examination protocols, including the incorporation of proctored exams or robust online monitoring systems designed to forestall any potential breaches of integrity.
Furthermore, these evaluations often encompass time constraints and a diverse array of question formats, ensuring a comprehensive appraisal of the candidate's proficiency and grasp of the subject matter.
Conversely, an organization purporting to be reputable yet relying solely on online assessments lacking proctoring or time constraints and predominantly featuring simplistic true or false questions inevitably casts doubt on the legitimacy and validity of the certification process.
Regrettably, this appears to be the prevailing issue surrounding the International Fitness ASSOCIATION (I.F.A.), the certification body from which the concerning trainer acquired his credentials. (NOT to be confused with another existing I.F.A., the International Fitness ACADEMY, which is totally legit).
The disconcerting aspect remains how a well-regarded establishment like Alex Fitness Gym can wholeheartedly lend its unequivocal endorsement to an individual whose professional proficiency rests upon the fragile foundation of an expediently acquired and potentially dubious certification.
It is crucial to conduct comprehensive research in advance to ensure that the trainers' expertise and credentials align with the industry's prevailing standards, particularly considering the significant fees they charge for their services.

I was on a business trip in SF and was looking for a gym in the area where I stayed. (Castro). There are several gyms around but Alex fitness was, hands down, best for my needs.
It’s not a big gym by any means, however I have never seen it crowded even during peak times. (AM or PM), so you never wait for machine or bench to be freed. It is extremely well equipped, much better than regular big name gyms. It has free weights, dumbbells, kettlebells, Olympic and other bars, cardio zone, stretch zone, TRX, hey even massage table… I can go on and on - it has it all. You name it. Seriously, I wish gyms Im going to had half of the equipment of Alex fitness. Regulars are super nice, and welcoming. There is large choice of personal trainers available for private training as well. Showers, towels are available and lockers with keys or if you’d like you can bring and use your padlock.
It is also very clean, I’ve seen staff cleaning it regularly. Long story short - there is so much love and attention invested in this gym, I have rarely seen it before. And I’ve been regular to gyms for over 30 years. I recommend this gym without any reserve or hesitation. Bravo the owners - this is the way!

After my Physical Therapist appointment.

& When I text messaged further ( & called leaving a message )

I received *NO* Response.

I guess they don't need Members that bad.

I’ve worked out at Alex Fitness for over 2 years and found it to be one of the best gyms in the area.
- It’s always kept clean. The staff uses cleaners on all equipment
- Never has to wait to use equipment. Has steady business but never crowded in a bad way
- Staff are all friendly and I often chit-chatted with them.
- Monthly rates are very reasonable compared to other gyms in the area.
All around great gym. Give it a try and you’ll be glad.

Membership options are great - no cancellation fees or sign up fees. Monthly fees are about $75. Took a star off because the gym isnt that big, and especially the stretching area is a bit worn out - the mats and foam rollers are ripped/kind of gross. Can get crowded in after work rush hour. No one coming here to hook up though, so that's good.

I loved the space, the friendly staff( outside of one who was "too' friendly' , as in sexuality flrtacious, which I find highly inappropriate and unprofessional. Great clients, also, not very chatty like other gyms I've been to and mostly there for a serious workout instead of a social scene..Also love the private showers, very clean along with the rest of the place..

I'm somewhat reluctant to write a review, because I don't want Alex to start getting crowded, but I thought I would add some things other reviewers did not mention.

The women's locker room is essentially a changing room. It's quite small and realistically only one person can change in there at a time. I workout after work, so I don't mind the lack of showers, but this can be a deal breaker for some.

To get the lowest membership price you need to pay a full year's worth up front (which is what I do). I'm not sure how the other Alex's membership plans stack up against other nearby gyms in terms of affordability. But paying upfront is worth it to me, because I actually get to use the equipment versus waiting in a queue for what feels like days at other gyms.

I've been going to Alex consistently for 2.5 years, and overall I'm pretty happy with it. It's clean, I rarely have to wait for equipment, and the people are really nice.

This is the only place in the Castro that's chill enough for me to work out, so please don't everyone rush over and ruin it. But if you are looking for a non-cruising gym with members who seem completely caught up in working out and who are pretty good to each other, this is the place.

My only complaint - and the severity varies - is that many people here work out with trainers. SOME trainers (not most of them) and some people who work out on their own, have a bad habit of setting up 2, 3 or even more stations and hogging them while the rest of us are using only one machine at a time. I don't know how the gym can police this and not be off-putting to trainers. Trainers should know better than to encourage their clients to violate basic gym etiquette, especially in a smaller gym where there's pretty much one of everything... except free weights. So: Management -- awesome, humane, easy to work with, totally out of the way of the workout. Other members -- could be better, but i've unfortunately seen worse.

★ 5

Honestly one of the reasons I love training here is the environment. The space is clean, members and trainers are respectful, and it’s not a madhouse like other gyms. If you are looking for more of a community gym feel where people know one another, and not sit on the equipment and talk, yet work in with one another and respect a space this gym would be a good pick for you.

It's a great place to work out! All machines are new (and they all are Techno Gym, which is always better anyway plus the treadmills can be synched up with your Nike+ profile via your iphone) and it's really clean, it's also not at all crowded like other gyms around Castro. They offer complimentary towel service and the staff are incredibly friendly. It's also very affordable!
