I joined American Barbell Club a few weeks ago and couldn’t be happier with my choice. Melea gave me a tour when I signed upβ€”she was friendly, knowledgeable, and answered all my questions. The gym has a serious lifting vibe but with a welcoming, down-to-earth atmosphere. It’s clean, well-maintained, and members show real respect by wiping down equipment and racking their weights. There are plenty of squat racks, a solid selection of cardio machines, and the sound of clanking plates adds to the energy. I already referred a close friend to join, and I highly recommend this gym to anyone looking for a great place to train.

I drive over the hill for this gym, so needless to say, I love it. That said, upstairs men showers need regular deep cleaning and proper ventilation. Grout/tiles are dirty and there's a very strong mildew scent. Would be awesome if mgmt took care of this.

I normally don’t leave reviews, but my experience with American Barbell in Campbell has been frustrating enough that I feel obligated to warn others. The lack of billing transparency and disorganized management is absolutely unacceptable.

First, there’s zero consistency with how new members are treated. I’ve personally referred people to this gymβ€”and the joining fees are bonkers. No one in staff seemed to know what the policy actually was, and instead of clarity, I was met with attitude and contradictions. There’s clear favoritism for who they want to waive the fees for.

The management is truly a nightmare. It feels like they’re just making things up as they go, and if you’re not one of their β€œfavorites,” expect to be treated like an afterthought. I’ve given them referrals, supported the gym, and genuinely tried to be a loyal memberβ€”but they’ve made it clear that loyalty doesn’t mean much here.

At this point, I’m actively discouraging my friends from joining. This gym is close to work and I was hoping to bring office buddies here, but not any more. There are other gyms in the area where billing is straightforward, policies are applied fairly, and you’re treated with basic respect. American Barbell Campbell needs a complete overhaul in leadership and customer service.

I've been a member of this gym for years and let me tell you, it's absolutely unparalleled! I go in, crush my workouts, and stay in my zone. The gym is consistently immaculate, and the staff are top-notch professionals who are not only charming but also sticklers for the rules. It's an absolute pleasure to work out here without any distractions. I highly recommend it!

They have a lot of machines so you can usually find something to use unless it's the busy hours.
They don't really keep up on maintaining the machines. I asked about them putting numbers on the weights for the machines so you can tell how much weight your doing, that was over a month ago and still hasn't been done. Other machines are in disrepair also.
They close early during the week and really early on the weekends. They need to stay open longer. The people are much more serious about their training here which is nice, a lot of people will let you work in with them. At Planet Fitness most people don't know what working in with them means but I have had two people offer which was nice. The people at the front desk are friendly most of the time. The 42 dollars a month is a little expensive but it is a serious gym not a Planet Fitness faux gym.

Popped in this morning for a workout as I’m in town for the weekend. I’ve been working out for 20 years and I would guess I have worked out in over 100 gyms across the world from U.K. to Brazil to Singapore and everywhere in between. This is hands down the best equipped gym I’ve ever been too. It had literally every piece of equipment you could possibly need for a body building or athletic training workout and multiple of the important/popular ones. Not new or flashy just everything you need and plenty of space. Awesome gym.

As the name suggests, they have plenty of barbells.

…and machines, other free weights, cardio gear, and just about anything else you can think of whether you’re lifting heavy or not in your training. I’ve seen powerlifters, bodybuilders, boxers, and more here, yet as a more casual lifter, it’s a supportive environment with more than enough weights for everyoneβ€”I usually come in the morning, but I’ve never had to wait to use a weight or machine

I was a member from way back when it was golds gym. I joined gold’s gym in 1995 but after it turned into American barber club(they cut your wallet) 🀣 everything went down hill. The owner is having weird policies and it’s not the same old atmosphere anymore. So I decided to go down the street to fitness 19. Way cheaper and newer equipments and more decent people too. Bye bye American Barber club.

I've been coming here for years and I'm glad they're reopening and want them to stay open. They've taken steps in the current pandemic situation such as closing off the cardio area, lockers, water fountains, and showers. They've also updated some equipment like replacing the aging dumbell rack.

Edit:
The cleaning stations are now gone. People are still cleaning machines but now theres far fewer stations to go to and theyre all spaced out. Now you have towels running out more. I don't see why not to keep out more towel and cleaning stations. I found it encouraged people to make the place cleaner and am disappointed in this change.

I have been training at Jerry McCall’s gyms since 1983. It was Gold’s then. It has always been the gym to go to for serious bodybuilders in the South Bay. People complain about minor things that are common to such establishments but, in my experience there has never a better choice at such a reasonable price. Unfortunately they may not survive this current pandemic if we don’t cooperate with restrictions. Hang in there Jerry, we need you!

Stay away from this place!

After the government issued the Shelter-In-Place orders, I tried to contact the gym to cancel my membership, but could never get a response. They continued to charge me despite an acknowledgement on their own site that they couldn't operate.

Over a month of trying to get refunds and a cancellation later, I still hadn't received any communications from them. I successfully disputed the charges with my credit card, but still they continue to charge me!

It's a shame, because I was a regular when this location was still Gold's Gym, and the facilities are nice enough.

Great facilities, great staff. I'm a new member and I immediately appreciated the fact that when I tried the free trial they didn't have an army of salesmen trying to pitch different membership options to me. It was incredibly simple and fast, and they encouraged me to try out different locations to find which suited me the best. There were numerous machines/benches/squat racks, and the music wasn't turned up so loud that it would be bothersome during my workout. I found the people amazing, as multiple fellow gym-goers asked me how I was doing, and were open to having a quick chat in between sets without disrupting my own workout. Ultimately everyone was still very focused and I didn't see many people sitting with their phones hogging equipment.

Been going here for a few years now, the price is unbeatable and the equipment is top notch. It's the ideal place for a body builder type of routine with 6 squat racks and more. The only thing that could be more ideal are more mirrors, but because of the abundance of windows they don't really have a lot of options there.

Worst gym experience ive ever had. The staff is rude, and are not there to help.. assuming they think they have some sort of status because they work at a gym? .... I have never received as much attitude as I have here. ( Campbell Location) The gym is filth and smells. There is no ventilation. The bathrooms are disgusting.
I went in to cancel, they told me the only way to do so was to email. I emailed 4 times. The final email I sent to cancel was also ignored but the funds stopped coming out for about 2 months.. now I am being charged again!..
I called to get assistance and was told that Emailing is not a way to cancel and if I would like to live in the past, i can call to complain.
Gyms are supposed to be inviting, and customer service should be just that.... since the customer is how you make your money.

I will never ever recommend this gym to anyone.. and DONT give them your banking information!

This is a great gym for lifting, and still is after they changed to "American Barbell". The cardio options are also pretty adequate. However, if you're into that cross-training stuff, this probably isn't the place for you (no space). I've been going here for a few years and I'd say it's the best place in town.

That said, there's a few things you'll need to consider before coming here.

A) The GUYS on staff are awesome. Super helpful and knowledgeable about the gym and lifting in general. The GIRLS on staff are worthless. As far as I can tell, their job requires obnoxious laughing and generally being unhelpful in all things. If you know how to use a gym, this really won't be a problem.

But seriously.

SUPER obnoxious.

B) Most of the people who work out here are either illiterate, or mentally retarded. For instance, all the dumbbell have numbers on them to signify how much they weigh. Not uncommon. There are racks where the dumbbells go when not in use that have numbers on them in certain locations. People who can read (and know what numbers are) know that you put the dumbbell back on the rack in the location with numbers that correspond to those on the dumbbells. Members at this gym just put them wherever because reading is hard.

In the rest of the gym there are racks where the weight plates go. The weight plates all differ in size (diameter) based on how heavy they are. Now these racks don't have numbers, but generally, if you're not retarded, you would place your weight plate on a rack where an identically shaped pate already is. Or, if that isn't an option, place it on an empty part of the rack. Kind of like putting the square peg in the square hole as opposed to the round one, or the one shaped like a star. I assume most of the members at this gym failed that little game as toddlers and despite continuing to disappoint their parents and teachers throughout adolescence, managed to become adults and pay for a gym membership. Weight plates seem to just be thrown on to the racks in a manner that is best described as "short bus".

This isn't really an issue the gym can solve (without a more extensive application process) and I don't fault them for it, but it's still something to keep in mind when considering this gym.

C) While the main area seems pretty clean, if there's anywhere that even remotely resembles a corner that a standard size vacuum couldn't access when being nonchalantly maneuvered around, expect there to be a bunch of dust and whatnot in said corner.

Aside from this, great gym. 5 stars for exercise options and pricing. -1 star for the items listed above.

I have been a member ~4 years, belonged to Right Stuff prior. The best aspect is the large size of facility, choices of free weights and bench-related lifting. Actually, their selection of machines seems excellent. I don't have the knowledge or dedication to comment further on the "selection." Their A/C on the ground floor cools real well. The 2nd level (where most of cardio is located) has less A/C.

They clearly under-perform in most aspects of management. They skimp on preventative maintenance. Their weight bearing machines appear to be not regularly cleaned or moving parts lubricated. Pegs & pins are bent, some are missing. Take something as simple as keeping a legible weight stenciled on a stacked plate; those are faded. When I mention this to front staff, I get implausible answers or shrugs. Some groupings of machines are not numbered, so even if a customer takes the time to report a problem, the problem machine w/n be clear to front desk folks.

The customers are broad-ranging. Some are very aware of gym etiquette. (Less about how you hydrate and more about not tying up equipment while you use it as a lounge chair to text.) Some are generous with allowing others to work in, others treat their sequence of reps as a religious experience.

If you can self-direct your work out and don't need help from the front desk or the paid trainers, this is a good place. If you expect a clean men's toilet, towels or any engagement from the staff, look elsewhere. Excellent physical plant but the folks at the desk seem untrained in running a service business and their main office seems like an absentee owner.

(4/14/17) Renamed to "American Barbell." Nice job in adding areas for squats, heavy punching bag and a weight sled. Folks do real good work on the squats. So, if I were rating only by amount of good equipment and space design, I'd rate 5-star. Their below-average performance continues in general equipment maintenance (same negatives as my previous posting) and site cleanliness. The 2nd probably boils down to budget; the owner d/n seem to care about this. The 1st is both not spending $ and not even having a system where a customer can I.D. a defective machine by a unique #. So, among the machines that require regular maintenance (.e.g. any cardio machine), assume you'll encounter higher % of out-of-order. If you can handle this, then you'll be very happy. If not, they're 3.5 to 4.5 stars, depending on how important a clean gym is to you.

This is a great facility. The owner of this franchise has multiple locations in Northern California and continually updates/refurbishes the fitness equipment. I especially like the extended early hours that the gym provides (opens at 5:00 AM) for people that like to get an early start on the day. This has been a Gold's Gym franchise (oldest continuous franchise) for 25+ years but the owner is re-branding to American Barbell in April 2017.

I've been a member of this gym for about 1 1/2 years. It's OK. Not the cleanest place (actually, often quite dirty), and they nixed their stretch/ functional fitness spot downstairs next to the weightlifting equipment, but otherwise: they have what you need here, & recently upgraded some equipment (although I miss some of the "classic" pieces for basic exercises). Just clean and stock the bathrooms/locker rooms once in a while, guys! Jeeez. Also: this place stays pretty busy until 10pm often, so peak hours are extended compared to other gyms. There's so many "restroom"s available here but I choose to get in to use the restroom and take a look of this gym before I go to the culinary class right upstairs. The none smile guy in the front asked me "are you a member?" I said no then he said "the restroom is for customer only".
No welcoming no greeting no nothing and it's always easy to say a no to a stranger. I think I will not be a member here in the future either.
That easy, they just turned another potential customer away by letting me go to whatever next door. There's Starbucks there's gas station right on the corner you think a customer came in for no reason or just the excuse they tell?
