Andy Shin Fitness offers support, guidance and accountability in achieving your fitness goals - no matter what stage of life you are in.

I customize training programs for each of my clients depending on their objectives. Over the past 16 years, I have helped over 2,500 clients in the Washington DC metropolitan area. Now Andy Shin Fitness has relocated to Orange County, California to serve you! Whether it be losing weight, fixing an injury or just overall wanting to live a healthier, stronger lifestyle - I am committed to helping you succeed in your journey.

All my clients leave happy but most clients tend to stay because I push them everyday to their desired limits. I'll keep you accountable and make sure we get to where you want to be!

I am a cancer recovery patient and during my long treatment I lost weight, muscle and just low on energy. As I was getting my strength back, I decided to get a personal trainer to help me with my physical recovery, I interviewed three trainers and decided Andy is the best fit for me. Andy played a crucial role in helping me getting my strength back by providing expert guidance, motivation, and accountability every step of the way. When I first started training with Andy I had horrible neck and shoulder pain from years of poor posture and not adequately strength training. Since I've been training with him, I've noticed significant improvement in my posture, neck/shoulder pain, overall strength, and energy! He's very knowledgeable about body mechanics and rehabilitating injuries.

After my first Andy, I knew my years long search for a trainer was over - I found THE ONE!

What I find unique about Andy is he comprehensively tackles fitness from both aspects of exercising and dieting. Andy is very good at simplifying and filtering a concept to the core and giving simple tips that are hugely impactful.

One example, prior to Andy, I was working out, but not really tracking my diet. He provided me with simple recipes from the start, I’m talking 5-ingredient recipes that I can’t mess up. And he has meal plans that span over month. Most everything is 5 ingredients or less, and it had me reevaluate all my past beliefs about how hard it was to maintain a healthy diet.

As for my work outs, they challenge me, but in a way that feels rewarding and not discouraging, which I appreciate. Andy has been wonderful at scaling my workouts according to where I’m physically at.

I’ve worked with a few trainers before, but with Andy, I see the results. I would recommend Andy to anyone looking to transform

Great experience so far with Andrew. Being a relatively new dad already with chronic back pain, I needed someone who could help me recover from 2 herniated disks--AND STAY better. Knowing that, Andrew assessed me top to bottom, and got me going on strengthening weak areas, rebuilding fundamentals and habits, and gave me tips on navigating different situations. So far, I've seen a lot of improvement in my movement, coordination, and overall durability. BIG ups for being flexible and adjusting to what you need, like for me, I like more explanation of what we're doing and why, or sometimes I need some active release because the week has had my muscles locked up, or sometimes I need to just to ease up because the injury is flaring up. As a former trainer myself, I can attest Andrew has such deep and diverse knowledge of sport science, but also possesses a real talent for applying that acumen to specific scenarios, to make sure you're getting the training you need (as opposed to one-size-fits-all training/therapy/treatments that you might find elsewhere). Usage of app is great for delivering round-the-clock training, and great guy on top of it all. I honestly could go on and on in greater detail about all the ways Andrew has improved my quality of life just through the personal training, but in short, I'm happy to recommend him to anyone.

TL;DR: Great at adapting a workout plan, from wanting to get in shape to having to recover from injury. Extremely knowledgeable about different forms of training (ART is big bonus for me). All-around good dude, definitely recommend, especially if you're not looking for the typical "get me shredded" kind of trainer.

I first started working with Andy in 2020 when he was based in Arlington, Virginia. It was my first time getting a personal trainer and I was nervous about lifting weights. He was great with teaching me how to have good form and set great long-term habits for my fitness journey. His app workouts are really great to supplement during the week outside our 2x per week 30 min sessions. You may think 30 min does not feel like a lot for a session. Trust me, with Andy, he really maximized every minute of each session! I was really sad when he moved to California because I knew I couldn't find another trainer like him again.

Fast forward to 2024, I ended up moving to Southern California. I was getting ready for my wedding and was also recovering from several injuries which made it difficult to get back to exercising intensely. I had to drive a bit to get to him in Irvine, but I knew it would be totally worth the drive and the money. Andy was great at encouraging me to push myself more because he saw I was ready. He was especially good about adapting my training when I physically couldn't do certain exercises because of an injury. Training with Andy helped me re-establish a good fitness routine and feel confident to workout again. I am really grateful I got to work with Andy in both Arlington and Irvine. I highly recommend him as a trainer if you're looking for someone to help you establish healthy habits and gain confidence in your fitness journey!

I've been working with Andy for the last four months after searching online for a trainer focused on education and injury prevention. In the past, my experience with fitness was following YouTube videos, HIIT programs on an app, or bootcamp. However, I consider myself to be a total beginner in the gym and wanted to have a better understanding of weightlifting and functional fitness, while ensuring proper form.

During our first meeting, we talked through my goals, his approach, and his plan for our sessions. Since then, he's created a plan for me that has helped build up my strength and confidence in the gym. I look forward to working with him every week. Each 30 minute session goes by so quickly - his energy is infectious and fools me into believing in myself more. When I hurt my hip from running, he adapted our workouts and gave me some exercises to help strengthen my hip flexors and release my IT band - I was even able to run my first half marathon! On days when I'm not training with Andy, he provides assignments based on my available equipment - either at the apartment gym which is very well stocked, or a minimal hotel gym. If I have any questions about a workout or diet, he's incredibly responsive throughout the week.

I'm so grateful to have met Andy and to be able to work with him. He's incredibly motivating, genuine, earnest, and methodical in his approach, while keeping it fun. I highly recommend calling Andy if you're looking for a knowledgeable trainer who will work hard alongside you.

Andy came highly recommended by a friend and I have been working with him for a little over two months now. Came into this not knowing what to expect as I had not done any athletic training since high school and had been quite sedentary for some time.

Andy does a great job of getting clients ready for upcoming events but I didn't necessarily have one to plan for. Nevertheless, he has helped me immensely! I went from exercising once a week to 3-4 times/week. I'm no longer afraid of walking into the weight room and setting up the barbell and squat rack on my own. I haven't really paid attention to numbers but I can feel the changes in my energy level, general movement, and overall strength.

I found Andy through a google search for personal trainers when I was finally ready to get my body moving again after having 2 babies back to back. From first contact, Andy was thorough, professional, and knowledgeable about fitness in a way that appealed to me (I'm a physician) because he knows the science and evidence-based philosophies that aligned with my views and vision of recovery. I've always hated working out and gyms.

After recovering from an injury, I decided to invest in my health. Of all the trainers out there, I felt very lucky to have found Coach Andy. He listened to my concerns during our first session and with my upper body limitations, made sure that I was comfortable with the exercises.

In February 2022, I was booking a trip to Hawaii for May 2022 and feeling somber contemplating another trip passing and being unhappy with how I looked. Tired of being tired of myself, I hopped onto Yelp and contacted a couple of the 5 star trainers on this site.

Andy was the most responsive and enthusiastic about training me. He responded to my email the same day, scheduled a phone call with me and even squeezed me in for a same-day free trial at the gym to see if I would like it. It was a bit crazy, because I went from never working out to having a personal trainer in the span of a couple hours, but I committed to some sessions and never looked back.

From February to May I went from 131 pounds and 32% body fat to 125 pounds and 28% body fat. Now, in September, I'm 121 pounds and 25% body fat. I'm in the best shape of my life, even going back to high school.

Andy has helped me become more explosive and have more endurance in the pool. He has taught me several new movements I wasn't great at, but now I am an expert! I am someone who has a hard time being accountable to herself when it comes to working out. As a nightshift nurse, it can be difficult for me to motivate myself to work out when sleep seems more important. He provides homework for you to do at home each day, allowing you to continue your strength training and accountability outside of your sessions. I consider myself an intermediate gym-goer/lifter and never really considered the need for a personal trainer. I also was never consistent with my workouts, diet, or goals. Since before Andy physically relocated to sunny Southern California, I was able to familiarize myself with his business and personal training style even though I had no interest in hiring him as a personal trainer at the time. He had quite the résumé and I was thrilled to come and find out that all the praise and accolades he’s received are well-deserved. I’ve had trainers in the past that have worked out well, but in the few months I’ve worked with Andy I’ve been able to see vast improvements in both my physical appearance and physical abilities (strength, stamina, etc.). I came to Andy as a friend with some health issues and was very concerned about how to handle these issues naturally, without medical prescriptions. He suggested I incorporate more HIIT into my exercise regiment and also educated me on heart health. He also offered me a complimentary introductory session to show me what he did for a living and how he can assist me in my goals if I were interested. At the time, I wasn’t interested because I wasn’t sure whether I could reciprocate the commitment to him that he was offering to make to me.

One thing that impresses me the most about Andy is PROFESSIONALISM. There is an abundance of personal trainers in Orange County. However, few and far in between will be able to offer this level of professionalism. Andy is on top of scheduling, emails, payments and anything else you can think of! I am usually skeptical of service providers and always assume I will need to stay on top of things or constantly follow up. Andy has never provoked me to do either. If he promises you a date and time, you can count on him to be there…prepared to work you to your full potential.

Needless to say, I signed up with Andy after my complimentary session. He has provided me with a nutrition plan, tailored at home workout regiments and, most importantly, a trusting friendship. I trust Andy to have my best interest at heart. He is eager to dedicate 101% to his clients to help us push beyond our boundaries. This is his passion! Throughout my 20s, I've been self trained, internet trained, buddy trained, but never personally trained.

I've come very close to hitting some of my personal fitness goals on my own, but could never meet them 100% before some generic life disruption sent me into a delicious sedentary spiral and back to square 1.

My goals with Andy is to be in the best physique of my life before I turn 30 later this year, and get stronger in all my favorite sports: surfing, snowboarding, and golf!

Andy always keeps you right at your physical limit, and toes the line perfectly to maximize your gains. For example, he was able to diagnose some mobility issues that contributed heavily to a back injury I sustained while doing some of my favorite sports: golfing and surfing.

To help me heal he did two things:
1. He provided warmups, homework, and classes that increased my mobility
2. Using an array of trigger point therapy he was able to loosen up my strained lat before each class.
3. Safely adjusted the fitness class to compensate for the strained lat.

If I didn't train with Andy, I'd have treated that back injury with TV and Gaming. But thanks to him, I was able to get stronger safely, and back to being fully healed!

Andy's knowledge of how to manage each muscle group with all different types of workouts amazes me. It makes the workouts super dynamic and fun, and I've learned so much on the way.

As an engineer, I'm always super interested in how my body works and responds to the different movements and Andy provides very concise and satisfying explanations showcasing his deep knowledge and true understanding.

Right now, it's snowboard season and I see all the gains from Andy Shin Fitness on the mountain. I can ride faster, longer, and move better than I have ever before!

A few more months, and I've got to come up with some new goals cause Andy's knocking it out of the park.

I found Andy while perusing Yelp reviews for trainers in the Irvine area. I was initially impressed with his awards and recognition from his DC business (he recently relocated to Orange County). I completed an interest form on his website and he contacted me in less than 24 hours. We spoke on the phone and he asked great questions about my goals, current workout routine/activities, and what I was looking for in a trainer/fitness plan. He emailed me within a few hours with additional details and a questionnaire. We scheduled a complimentary session for the following week.
It was wonderful to meet him in person. He’s very easy to get along with, a great listener and extremely knowledgeable. He has clients with various levels of fitness, age, and abilities.
I have been working out with Andy for about 3 months and have noticed a smaller waistline, stronger arms, and the best part is, my tennis game has improved! (I’m also happy I can do many push-ups now, whereas when I first started, I could only do modified push-ups).

Andy is great and I highly recommend him if you are looking for a trainer, no matter your experience level. I had never done weight training, stepped foot in a gym, or taken fitness classes - during our consultation, I told Andy about being a complete beginner and he was highly reassuring that it wouldn't be an issue. He has since walked me through literally everything (i.e. what equipment to get, repeated demonstrations for movements, explanations on why we were doing certain exercises, how it all ties towards my goals). He is only a text message away and is very responsive/open to questions, which I've found really helpful as this can all be very intimidating and overwhelming when navigating it on your own.

I started working with Andy in January 2021, so it's been about 10 months now. I can confidently say that not only do his methods work but this experience has surpassed my expectations. My goal was to get stronger so that my body and physical ability wouldn't be what stopped me from doing the things I enjoy. Andy's coaching has enabled me to go from being barely able to do a push up or lift a 10 lbs dumbbell to doing single arm cleans with a 40 lb kettlebell and deadlifts with the 60 lb. He is always encouraging me while also challenging me to push a little harder and keeps me accountable.

Andy offers both virtual classes and private sessions, which came in handy for me as someone who doesn't live nearby for in person sessions. He also has a slew of programs for you to access via app and workout on your own. So it's easy to mix and match until you find a routine that works best for you. I worked with Andy one on one for 10 weeks (2 sessions a week). I came to him with sciatica pain, tennis elbow, and significant neck stiffness. Within one month my sciatica pain completely disappeared. By the end of the 10 weeks I had significant improvement in neck mobility. Andy caters each workout to your needs/goals. He helps push you to the next level of fitness with encouragement and positivity. There were days when I went in with a horribly stiff neck and did not think it was possible to work out, but I always left with less pain and more mobility. Not just for that day but for that entire week.

Andy changed my life. During the pandemic all I did was work and I was stuck in a rut , no motivation , no drive. When my wife started working with Andy I saw how hard he pushed her and how involved he was in making sure that she was getting the most out of her workouts and I was sold. Since meeting Andy, I’ve learned so much more about nutrition and strength training. Before we met, I’d try various types of diets and stuck pretty strictly to just running. These diets would often fail and give me a negative mindset around certain types of foods, and the running often left me injured. With Andy’s help, I focused more on the nutritional aspects of all food, and less on the idea or “good” or “bad” foods. I also stopped getting injured! With the baseline of strength training, I can keep running without all the aches and pains I would normally get before and run at a faster pace than I ever have. A few reasons I highly recommend Andy:
1. His classes are amazing and push you beyond your personal limits or what you thought you were capable of. I am now exercising with weights and other gear that I never imagined I would be able to use. At the same time, he never over does it!

As gyms closed due to COVID-19, I had already started gaining weight towards the end of March and early April as I stopped going to the gym and snacked more. I had a wedding scheduled for June that was uncertain due to the current pandemic. I was able to get in touch with Andy and receive some personal training that kept me occupied and working hard for 2 months, which got me in a good shape to fit in my wedding dress for my mini wedding.

I found Andy about a year ago when I noticed that my weight was becoming an actual problem. I had been steadily getting bigger since college and right at the cusp of going from "a big guy" to a "fat guy". I went to my doctor and had raised cholesterol, blood pressure and triglyceride levels. From there I decided I needed to change.

I started exercising a bit but quickly realized I had no idea how to actually workout and was too intimidated to join a class as I knew I would be one of the worst ones there. Thats what prompted my outreach to Andy Shin Fitness.

Over the past year I have lost over 30 pounds of fat, put on a substantial amount of muscle, cut 10+ percentage points off of my body fat percentage and am infinitely more coordinated than I was previously. I found Andy after a two-year stint with CrossFit, at which point I felt I was in fairly decent shape. CrossFit *did* help me make some early progress and feel more comfortable in gyms at large, but I felt like I'd plateaued on strength and was looking for help with programming my workouts more intentionally for my specific goals.

Per my cheapskate preferences and tricky work schedule, Andy and I only have in-person training once every two weeks or so—and those in-person workouts are both fun and CHALLENGING—but Andy also provides take-home programming for his clients through the Trainerize app that's been absolutely invaluable to me.

I've never had too much trouble getting to the gym, but I've definitely struggled to feel like I'm spending my time efficiently while there. I've worked with Andy over the past year and a half on my fitness goals. From our first meeting, I could tell that Andy was invested in my happiness as a client, and in my overall health and well-being too.

He started by meticulously crafting meal plans, workout regimens and tips and tricks for me to use on the days that we weren't working out together. He shared his best practices and answered every question I had about diet and fitness thoughtfully, explaining the science behind all of his answers and helping me learn more about what makes our bodies tick and how to make my fitness dreams a reality.

Our in-person sessions were non-stop work. Andy is a big fan of circuit style training (cycle through several exercises targeting different muscle groups with minimal rest in between) which meant that every session was challenging, but reward too. I never left a session thinking I was wasting my time or money. Trust me - you will feel the burn. Prepare to SWEAT, and expect to wake up the next morning completely sore. But that's how you know you're getting your money's worth. No pain, no gain!

Beyond his fitness insights and powerful workouts, Andy is just an all-around great human being. His sense of humor will keep you laughing all workout long. Definitely pick Andy as your trainer because he knows his stuff. 30 min sessions with him are as exhausting as 1hr+ workout sessions in the gym by myself. I was looking for some guidance on programming for myself since I was bored with my workout routine. Andy was the perfect trainer for my situation--he listened to my goals and formulated a strategy to increase my strength and get leaner. From January to May, I worked out with Andy twice a week, eventually tapering down to once a week. (Completing Andy's assigned workouts on his app 3-4 times a week) I'm a grad student so the scheduling flexibility was extremely helpful! I also really love barbell training and the accessory workouts Andy designed dramatically improved my strength. (For example, I got up to 185lbs on deadlifts and back squats) I also reduced my body fat percentage and lost several inches off my arms, waist, hips and thighs. I’m really happy with my results going into the summer!

I'm so sad I won't be able to train with Andy over the summer since I'll be working temporarily overseas but I definitely look forward to coming back and continuing to get stronger! Thanks so much for all you do!

I've been working with Andy for about 9 months now, and I cannot recommend him enough. I am 25 years old and I've always struggled with body weight & fat loss issues. Before I met Andy, the only thing I knew how to do when it came to fitness was cardio. When I was 23, I was able to lose a substantial amount of weight just by running everyday. However, I knew that this was not a well-rounded approach to fitness & health, so I contacted Andy for his help. From the get go, he developed a customized nutrition and training program that focused on helping me gain lean muscle while dropping my body fat percentage. When we don't have PT sessions, he creates customized "homework" workouts through a mobile app that I can do on my own. If you're like me and don't know what to do when working out alone, then you will greatly benefit from the training app that Andy offers. As far as PT sessions go, they are definitely intense yet highly effective (and efficient)! He also offers one-on-one sessions and partner sessions.

Andy is also really personable and never makes you feel like you don't know what you're doing - he truly makes exercising as fun as possible. Over the past 9 months, Andy not only has helped me get closer to my health and fitness goals, but also has highly contributed to my confidence and self-esteem, which is equally (if not more) important!

Amazing trainer, very attentive and hard working with a great attitude. Plans out workouts far in advance and sends out regularly updated workouts to do at home via a training app. Very knowledgeable about nutrition and physical therapy, I have a back issue and my girlfriend has a knee problem and he curates our workouts to both avoid reinjuring ourselves and to strengthen those areas to ensure that we will recover faster. He is always very engaged during sessions and every session is different and meant to push you outside your comfort zone. He is friendly, genuine, and relatable. The beginning is tough but you have to stick with it. Andy will bring the best out of you because he's dedicated to seeing you progress. Another thing is every session will be completely different. As the first meeting, he thoroughly assessed me and explained his coaching approach which is more focused on well-being and all around fitness (so you can run for your life if it were to ever come to that, haha), as opposed to being buff for the sake of being buff.
