Predatory Gym Practices – Be Cautious Before Signing
When I joined Anytime Fitness, the rep who signed me up told me I could cancel anytime if I moved. That seemed fine since my wife is a travel PT and we relocate every six months.
Since we moved to Cortez, Colorado—a town with no Anytime Fitness in sight. When I tried to cancel, they refused and instead kept billing me, stacking up to $600 in costs for a brand we can't even visit. Their cancellation process demands things like updated ID cards for each new address, which is unrealistic for someone who moves twice a year.
This is not the “cancel anytime” policy I was told when I signed up. It feels misleading and unfair, and preditory.
To be fair, when I lived in Oroville the gym itself was decent—clean space and friendly people. But the company’s membership policies are another story.
Bottom line: Beware of what you’re agreeing to when you sign. What they tell you verbally and what’s written in the contract are two very different things.
